Part 1 of 2 of the 1994 Xmas Special. Today's contestants are Paul Kershaw & Melanie Hayes from Cheshire, Phil Wood & Lynne Strachan from County Durham, Heather & Jon Goodman from Norfolk, and June Croft & Andy Bailey from Berkshire & Derbyshire. And it was a special episode for many reasons, not least because Bruce was leaving the show for the last time, along with assistant Rosemary Ford. The contestants are a game bunch (and they have to be), with one revealing her embarrassing ignorance of a work T-Shirt she had to wear for Rubb Buildings, while another wishes to do the rumba with Brucie. However, the most mortifying one is one guest's love of a certain celebrity and how he does impressions of him, only for said celebrity to pop up unexpectedly - a certain Rolf Harris! If only he had known. Among the games to play are the Lederhosen Dance (where unlike the first time it appeared on the show, this time the teams face a very embarrassing challenge), Xmas Cake Making, Par De Deau (Ballet & Balloon, with Susan George as judge and yet more cheeky interplay - this time with Brucie and a tutu clad Rosemary), and Guess the Nursery Rhyme. The finale is a suitable panto spoof of Dick Whittington, where guest judge is Willie Rushden, who thankfully is less insulting than he was last time he was on and much funnier too. Sadly this episode is missing the end credits, but other than that it is complete. A nice episode for Brucie to finish on, but an end to an era for the show. It's just a shame it had to have Rolf Harris in, who does seem to get rather touchy feely with Susan George at the end with the singalong, even though Susan - ever the professional - does not react. Part 2 to come.

00:00Life is the name of the game, and I want to play the game with you.
00:09Life can be terribly pain, if you don't play the game with two.
00:16And I want to play the game with you.
00:18The fifth, the player!
00:30Well, thank you.
00:32Oh, what an awesome.
00:34Thank you so much.
00:36You're very shy.
00:37Well, good evening.
00:39Good evening, ladies, gentlemen and children.
00:41Welcome to the Generation Game.
00:43Nice to wish you a Merry Christmas.
00:45To wish you a Merry Christmas.
00:47Nice!
00:48And welcome to an hour of festive fun and frolics.
00:51And that's never good to say when you've just had a drink.
00:54And I've had a drink.
00:55But I always know when I've had enough, I fall over.
00:58And I tell you something, I'm worn out with the Christmas shopping.
01:01I was walking round one large store, and I was exhausted.
01:05I just had to sit down, and I did.
01:07Father Christmas said, get off me, you Great Wally.
01:10Didn't even ask me what I wanted.
01:13But then I walked around, and then I bumped into Ronnie Corbett.
01:16He was standing there with a big smile on his face,
01:18and some woman picked him up and said to the assistant,
01:20where do I put the batteries?
01:23Poor Ron.
01:24Anyway, here she is, the prettiest of all decorations.
01:27that fascinating festive female I have in a drink,
01:31Rosemary Forge!
01:32Yes!
01:39My, my...
01:41What is that?
01:42Ah!
01:44Ah!
01:46As pretty as the fairy on a Christmas tree.
01:49Oh, well, I don't feel it.
01:50I'm worn out from all that Christmas shopping.
01:52Oh, you as well, eh?
01:53Yeah, do you know, I went to one of the largest department stores
01:56in London the other day, and there was this huge sign on the wall,
01:59and it said, babies must be carried up the escalator.
02:02Well, what's wrong with that?
02:03Well, I'm not even married.
02:05Difficult, difficult. I see what you mean.
02:07Do you know, I must say...
02:08Just put a laugh in there.
02:11I must, I must say.
02:13I'm in a funny mood tonight.
02:15I hope it lasts.
02:17I must tell you, look, I did enjoy watching your little boy
02:20and his school nativity play.
02:22Oh, well, I'd rather not talk about that, if you don't mind.
02:24Just introduce the contestants.
02:26Oh, and I mean, you must have been so proud of him playing the innkeeper.
02:29Look, look, would you please just introduce the contestants?
02:32Oh, and when Mary and Joseph arrived at the inn
02:35and your little boy opened the door and said,
02:37oh, come in, there's plenty of room.
02:41I know he shouldn't have said that, I know, but would you please get on with it?
02:44Oh, and I just thought it was so sweet, it was really sweet,
02:47when he said, and if you like, I'll give you a blanket
02:50and your donkey can kip down on the sofa.
02:52I was so embarrassed, he ruined the whole play.
02:56I wouldn't mind, but he's been rehearsing since Easter.
03:00Oh, and how about those three wise men?
03:02Yeah, they were wise men, they all did a runner.
03:05Mary introduced the contestants before they do the same.
03:08We'll put a laugh in there, don't worry about that.
03:11Right, our first teams from Cheshire,
03:13their father and daughter, Paul Kershaw and Melanie Hayes.
03:17Right.
03:22Oh, that's lovely, that's fine.
03:24Right, now, you are Melanie Hayes.
03:25Hayes.
03:26Yes, you married Brian Hayes 16 months ago.
03:28That's right.
03:29And you've been making hay ever since.
03:30Tell us about the wedding ceremony, was that nice?
03:31It was a lovely ceremony.
03:32Yeah.
03:33Brian actually picked the hymns for the wedding.
03:34Oh, did he?
03:35They were his favourite hymns from school assembly.
03:36Oh, yeah.
03:37So, he actually picked Give Me Oil In My Lamp.
03:39Oh, well, I've never heard that one.
03:40I hope it worked.
03:41You both saw the light.
03:42Oh, tell us about the honeymoon then.
03:43We went on a lovely honeymoon and we did a cruise to Egypt and Israel.
03:46Yes.
03:47And on this honeymoon, I took six books with me and read them all.
03:49Six books?
03:50I hope they are all love manuals.
03:51Did Brian help you turn over?
03:52Er, sometimes.
03:53The pages!
03:54The pages, for goodness sake.
03:55The pages, for goodness sake.
03:56I'm starting to see you all in my lamp.
03:58Oh, well, I've never heard that one.
03:59I hope it worked.
04:00You both saw the light.
04:01Tell us about the honeymoon then.
04:02We went on a lovely honeymoon and we did a cruise to Egypt and Israel.
04:03Yes.
04:04And on this honeymoon, I took six books with me and read them all.
04:08Six books?!
04:11I hope they're all love manuals.
04:13Did Brian help you turn over?
04:14Er, sometimes.
04:15The pages! The pages, for goodness sake.
04:19Now, what do you dislike?
04:21I absolutely detest licorice of any shape or form.
04:24Oh, really? Well, it takes all sorts.
04:29So it's over now to your father, Paul...
04:31Kershaw.
04:32I beg your pardon?
04:32Kershaw.
04:33Bless you.
04:35And what do you do?
04:36I'm in the car accessory business.
04:38I see, fine. And the love of your life is poly.
04:41Is that a woman or a parrot?
04:44Yeah, that's actually a woman.
04:45It is a woman?
04:45I thought she talks like a parrot sometimes.
04:46Why, couldn't you afford a parrot?
04:49What's all this about windsurfing in Ibiza?
04:52Yes, we were on holiday in Ibiza, Bruce.
04:54And I'd spent quite a bit of money learning to windsurf.
04:58Oh, difficult, isn't it?
04:59It is difficult. I spent a lot of time in the water.
05:01Yeah.
05:01And I got onto the board and sailed out into the bay.
05:05Yeah.
05:05And I found that I couldn't turn the board round and get back to shore.
05:08Totally. What did you do?
05:09And so I had to take the shorts off and wave them to attract attention.
05:15Well, if you took your shorts off, you wouldn't need to attract attention.
05:19For goodness sake.
05:20And what happened after that, then?
05:22Well, I was quickly spotted by two girls with binoculars.
05:24See, I bet they didn't know where to look for the best.
05:29Yeah, which end were they looking through?
05:32Any special talents have you got?
05:35Well, I can make chicken noises.
05:37Oh, can you?
05:38Yes.
05:38Oh, yes.
05:38Well, will you do some chicken noises into camera five?
05:41OK.
05:41Was that it?
05:49Yes, sir.
05:54It was beginning to work.
05:55Ada's going broody.
05:56Look at it.
05:59Right, Ada?
06:00Fine.
06:00I won't tell the soul you're here.
06:01Anyway, thank you for being with us.
06:03If you'll pop over there, we've got a game coming up for us.
06:05Come on, nice people.
06:07Nice people.
06:07Our second team's from County Durham.
06:14They're Uncle and Niece, Bill Wood and Lynne Strachan.
06:24Now, you are Lynne Strachan.
06:27Yes, and what do you do, Lynne?
06:28I demonstrate photocopping machines.
06:30Oh, lovely.
06:30And you're married to John for ten years?
06:33Yes.
06:33Has John got any irritating habits?
06:35Oh, he munches apples all day.
06:37He has about two pounds of apples every day.
06:39Two pounds of apples every day?
06:41Yep.
06:41I bet he hasn't seen a doctor in years.
06:44I thought it was about a T-shirt.
06:47Oh, well, I used to work for a company called Rub Buildings.
06:50Rub?
06:50Rub, or U-double-B.
06:52We had these T-shirts printed with rub right across here.
06:56I was so proud and naive.
06:58I wore it with such pride.
07:00Did you really?
07:00Yeah, but you can't imagine some of the comments I got about it.
07:03Yeah, I didn't have comments.
07:04I mean, you were lucky you didn't come across a guy called Vic.
07:13Who would you like to meet the most, apart from me?
07:15Well, the Chippendales and Richard Gere.
07:17All right, say you met the Chippendales, what would you do?
07:21No, just have dinner with them.
07:22Just have dinner with them, I know.
07:23You're saving Richard Gere for half the...
07:24I know your sort.
07:27Right, over now to Bill there.
07:29There you are.
07:29Over to your Uncle Bill...
07:30Wood.
07:31Wood, I see.
07:31And what do you do, Bill?
07:32General monitor of a factory.
07:34General monitor of a factory, yes.
07:35And you're married to Rose.
07:36Yeah.
07:36Oh, she's Rose Wood.
07:37Yeah.
07:37Oh, good.
07:41Has she got a nice finish?
07:42Nice.
07:4412 months, 12 months.
07:45Oh, yeah.
07:46Right, and tell us about your stag night.
07:48It was evidently something interesting.
07:50Yeah, well, being a Geordie,
07:52we went until the night before to have a stag night.
07:54Yes.
07:54And I ended up with a big black eye.
07:56No.
07:57Yeah.
07:57What, the party got a bit rough?
07:58It did.
08:00So it was something old, something new,
08:02and you were the something with black and blue.
08:03I can't move.
08:05Now, what happened after that, then?
08:06Well, me sisters, I've got four sisters,
08:08they put makeup on me eye,
08:10and Rose didn't actually notice it
08:11until the figure said,
08:13you may kiss the bride, you know.
08:14And when you turned, the kiss,
08:16but then she saw the shiner?
08:17Yeah, the shiner.
08:17Oh, my goodness, that's lovely.
08:19So it was kiss and makeup?
08:21Yeah.
08:24I'm sorry about that.
08:25Well, I did.
08:26British Christmas, I haven't a drink.
08:28Right.
08:29Tell us about the honeymoon, right?
08:30The honeymoon?
08:31No, we couldn't afford a honeymoon.
08:32We couldn't even afford a teapot.
08:33Oh, really?
08:34No.
08:34So you didn't even have a pot to make a cup of tea?
08:39For goodness sake,
08:41you didn't even have a pot to make a cup of tea in.
08:43What's the matter with you, Bill?
08:44Anyway, Bill, thank you very much for being here.
08:46Lynn, pop over there.
08:48Oh, all righty.
08:54Welcome, welcome.
08:55Before our first game,
08:56I'd just like to remind you
08:57that our contestants have no idea
08:59what we have planned for them.
09:00They do not rehearse.

16:39Something a little bit different?
16:40A Christmas Gatto, yes.
16:41A Christmas Gatto.
16:42Ah, good.
16:43Not a Christmas cake.
16:44No.
16:45So that's nice and creamy and all that.

16:59Chocolate cream.
17:00Just fold your Savoy bag back like that.
17:02Yep.
17:03And you can get your cream in.
17:05Now, get a lot in there, don't we?
17:07You need quite a bit of chocolate.
17:08You need a lot of chocolate.
17:10Yes, that's right.
17:11Give the turntable a little spin like that.
17:15And just...
17:20There you are.
17:21You see, it's one of our easier games.
17:24Yes.
17:25Yes.
17:26A couple of lines round the side.
17:27That's it, see?
17:28That's it.
17:29And then we'll have eight rosettes.
17:32Oh.

17:51It sounds a bit like rice.
17:52Yes.
17:54And make a lovely Christmas ghetto.
17:56Beautiful.
17:58A little bit of holly on, every will turn it.
18:00Uh-huh.
18:04Father Christmas.
18:05So, Father Christmas, there's the cake.
18:06Oh, and the finish is that.
18:07Look at the snow.
18:08Finish now.
18:09Santa Claus is coming...
18:10White chocolate.
18:11...to town.

18:13Isn't that lovely?
18:14Isn't that beautiful?
18:15That is...
18:17White Santa, Ken.
18:18As always, a masterpiece.
18:20Come back and do some marketing.
18:22Get to your tables nice and quickly.
18:24You get to the far one, Paul.
18:25You stay there, Melanie.
18:26Now, first of all, fill your bags up and put plenty of cream in.
18:30Go on, do that now.
18:31Plenty of cream.
18:32As much as you can get in there.
18:33Well, you know, as much as Ken put in.
18:36Keep putting plenty in.
18:39Getting plenty in there, are you?
18:41That's it.
18:42Plonk it in.
18:43Are you taking yours home?
18:45There's no left.
18:46Right, okay.
18:47Now, you've got about one and a half minutes to make your Christmas Gato, starting from
18:53now.
18:54Get a good spin going.
18:56If you can.
19:05You're not supposed to touch it with your hands.
19:09Very good at the end there.
19:11Very good.
19:13Look at his face.
19:16Yes, don't forget your rosettes.
19:18You've got about a minute left.
19:20So you're doing all right.
19:25That's it.
