00:00Hi my name is Liz Rawlings and I'm the part-time manager of the Fernhurst Hub.
00:04I just want to take a couple of minutes to tell you about this amazing place.
00:09The Fernhurst Hub was set up in 2003 as an internet cafe when it was decided that
00:14the children needed somewhere to go and before everybody had computers and over the years it
00:19has evolved to be the most incredible and indispensable part of the village. It's run
00:26by residents for residents with community and public service at the heart of all we do.
00:32The volunteers were awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2023 which is the MBE
00:41of volunteering so we're very proud of that. Not only are we a cafe where people can come and have
00:47friendship and coffees and meet people it's a very warm welcoming place but we're also a centre of
00:55education and learning and each week we have 100 people come here to learn French, Spanish or Italian,
01:02we have 34 people come and learn to play bridge or just play bridge, we have ukulele lessons,
01:09we have well-being lessons, chair yoga, breathing for relaxation and we have an extensive programme of
01:16events so we have evening talks, biscuit icing, we have our own repair cafe where a wonderful team of
01:24volunteers come and the volunteers come and repair items that would essentially end up in landfill and
01:30they give their time for free. We have a retail area, we have a lending library, there is so much going on
01:37and really I feel very strongly that the Fernhurst Hub should be a blueprint of what should be happening in
01:44every village around this country. If you'd like to find out more about us do look on at our website
01:53fernhursthub.org.uk or come and pay us a visit, we have amazing cakes which are made locally and
02:00delicious coffee and delicious coffee so we hope to see you soon.
