Transcript
00:00Police have some data! Stop!
00:02Driving is making off.
00:04Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:05Pull over in here now!
00:07Might be game on for something here.
00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22Just have warning markers for firearms.
00:25Vehicle's stolen.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:35Here you go, here you go.
00:36Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40You're doing it!
00:41Come out here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Police!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57For the traffic cops.
00:59He's blown 128.
01:0011 minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Conspicion of theft of motor vehicles.
01:05Tony, do not run.
01:07Swap the officer!
01:09I made a promise!
01:10Alright.
01:10Coming up.
01:17I want to fight it.
01:19Police officer with a duck!
01:21Cracking down on drugs.
01:23Line your front!
01:24Put your hand behind your back!
01:25I've got a broken shoulder.
01:27Some deals with cannabis.
01:28Disrupting suspected county lines.
01:31He's got your own kid to plug it then.
01:34Hunting down suspects.
01:35You're under arrest of suspicion of possession of class A.
01:37On the road, that's either Kendall mint cake or crack cocaine.
01:42This was the coat that she's got.
01:44It's more cash in it, shall we say.
01:46Taking off.
01:46And on the run.
01:48You're down to detail.
01:49Yeah, I'm going to go back down that way now.
02:05Hey, can I tell you something to do there?
02:08The aid call of interest has gone past me.
02:10Traffic cop Craig Dawes is responding to a call from local officers,
02:15tailing a suspicious car.
02:16Are you wanting me to make my way over and stop it, or are you behind it?
02:23I'm behind it.
02:25The car is suspected to have links to drug dealing.
02:28The mental, uh, from a few days ago.
02:31It was seen as possible in a bundle of cash.
02:34And then, uh, packets of bleed with cocaine.
02:38I don't think it's going to stop.
02:42Yeah, I'm just going to pick it up.
02:44And then, uh, from two, three, I'm going to try and make some ground.
02:49I'm five minutes away.
02:51Across Derbyshire, officers like Craig deal with around 3,000 drug offences every year.
02:58Yeah, it's showing no insurance.
03:00It's back to where, yeah, and now I'm from Bradford.
03:02The car's linked to an address in Bradford.
03:05And it's suspected it may be being used to transport drugs into the county.
03:11We're kind of a small town.
03:13We border on Sheffield.
03:14We border on Knott's.
03:15We border on South Yorkshire.
03:16So, sometimes Derbyshire's vulnerable where you have people coming from the outside to supply your drugs into the local areas.
03:25We try and control that.
03:27But there's so many roads in and out of the counties, it's, you know, it's kind of like pushing water uphill, really.
03:32Not too far away from anything.
03:34The vehicle has collided with a parked car.
03:49All right.
03:51It's made off.
03:52Yeah.
03:53Got behind it up here.
03:54As I've lit it up, the driver's got him back.
03:59Whilst it's still going.
04:02I think he's disqualified.
04:03But both occupants and applicants have retained him.
04:08Because of what it's been not.
04:10It's only a time for your place.
04:11The reasons are.
04:13No, we may not.
04:14Criminal and drug dealers are coming over from your neighbouring big cities and trying to take over the drug supply.
04:19That normally involves them recruiting younger people, possibly some people that's never ever been in trouble.
04:25As the men are not from Derbyshire and suspecting they're transporting drugs.
04:29The car does smell of cannabis a little bit.
04:31The cops turn their attention to the car.
04:35And there's Vaseline in there.
04:36And there's Vaseline, so...
04:37And you reckon he's got your own kid to plug it, then?
04:41I bet they've plugged.
04:43Yeah.
04:43They could possibly plug something.
04:47I mean, you've got the Vaseline there.
04:49Any little nut and cranny will try and put something in it.
04:52Plugging is when drugs are hidden within the body.
04:55You've got the apps and it's for robots in the room.
04:58Yeah, I reckon I have.
05:02How old are you?
05:06Lee.
05:07I just took right under the driver's seat at the back.
05:11A bearer phone.
05:12That's normally a drug dealer phone.
05:14Phones like these are untraceable because they don't have a contract.
05:21It's got no SIM card in.
05:22That's took right down under the back seat.
05:25But after a thorough search of the men, there's no sign of any drugs.
05:30There's no indication that there is.
05:31It may be just that, see, it's driving offences.
05:35But, you know, we'll always have a good look over.
05:38Neither of them's got licences.
05:39Neither of them's got insurance.
05:44It's like to run for the troops now, isn't it?
05:46Nice.
05:46It's slowed right down.
05:47It's gone on.
05:48It's made.
05:49He's bagged something.
05:51With suspicions that the suspects threw drugs away during the chase...
05:55Right, we'll scout.
05:57You need an Acer.
05:58Officers begin searching the street.
06:05If drugs are deposited from a vehicle and it's involved in a pursuit, it's difficult.
06:10Especially when they're deposited over grass or a large area.
06:14It's an absolute nightmare.
06:26Found something.
06:28They were right at what he said.
06:31They believed that it slowed down before they crashed and, see, some deals with cannabis.
06:37Fingers crossed there is no more around.
06:39I find it sad that these people are being targeted to become involved in a life of drugs.
06:47Unfortunately, once they're involved, they then can't get back out.
06:50And, you know, they're forever in the debt to the bigger drug dealers.
06:54It's a spiral down for them.
06:56Right, matey.
06:57You're under arrest.
06:58All right.
06:58Let's give them our possession.
07:00Well, yeah.
07:00We'll have to take a sense of that tomorrow.
07:01We'll do not say anything at my own defense.
07:03We're going to have to request them something to me.
07:04All right.
07:05The suspects are being taken for a strip search at the police station.
07:08Drug trade in Derbyshire has become a big problem socially.
07:16It's quite worrying that drugs are so openly available.
07:20People sometimes have to commit crime to buy the drugs, which then has a knock-on effect.
07:24People who's not involved in drugs are then becoming victims of crime and suffering from it.
07:29So it has a knock-on effect to everybody.
07:34Coming up.
07:35That's either Kendall mint cake or crack cocaine.
07:39A stop check.
07:40This is going to be the gift that keeps on giving, I'm afraid.
07:43Uncovers some suspicious items.
07:46And that's just from under the seat.
07:48Busy boy.
07:50Yeah, contact, contact with it.
07:52And officers.
07:52On the hunt for runaway drug suspects.
07:57Here you go, here you go.
07:59Here you go, here you go.
08:29No problem.
08:30You all right?
08:31Yeah, no problem.
08:31You know speed limit on here?
08:3330.
08:34That's your speed.
08:3538.
08:3638.
08:36Oh.
08:39Combinate all units, if there is any units, please.
08:42It's like a 2-6, I see if it's a one.
08:46Traffic cops Dave McAllister and Adam Shipley are on their way to join officers doing speed checks.
08:52Any reason you're doing 38?
08:57No, I'm feeling it's not going to be there.
08:59Well, still doesn't appreciate you going 38, does it?
09:02I don't know.
09:03It's good enough, man.
09:03Turn your steering full lock.
09:05Let's have a check around your car.
09:07Every vehicle stops different.
09:09You genuinely just don't know what the outcome is going to be.
09:12We will always carry out the same checks when we stop a vehicle.
09:15And you'll be amazed what we turn up.
09:16With the driver now off the road, Adam arrives.
09:24Evening.
09:24You all right?
09:26Mate, have you had any drugs or anything this evening?
09:29Use any alcohol or anything?
09:30No, no.
09:30Okay.
09:31More information on the vehicle comes in from control.
09:35Somebody reported that it was driving erratically and smelt of cannabis.
09:38Have you had any cannabis?
09:39No, I don't smoke.
09:40Have you smoked?
09:41With record highs of drug driving and speeding,
09:43traffic cops are increasingly doing roadside drug tests.
09:48Mate, what are you going to do?
09:48I'm just going to do a quick drug wipe on you then.
09:51Last year, there were 73,000 tests done across the country,
09:55with over half proving positive.
09:58Do you agree to give me a specimen of saliva?
09:59I'll make sure you do that.
10:00Thank you, my friend.
10:02While Adam waits for the results.
10:07Officers run checks on the car.
10:11Is this insurance?
10:13Let's have a look.
10:13We've just started it.
10:19You've just took that out then, haven't you?
10:21So it wasn't insured, were it?
10:22I'm not going to lie.
10:23I honestly thought it was.
10:24I honestly thought it was.
10:26I honestly thought it was.
10:27All right, but the time I've stopped you, it's not insured.
10:29So you've insured it now.
10:31I'm not.
10:31Only for a week.
10:32I'm not bullshit yet.
10:33I've honestly genuinely forgot.
10:35We've heard it all.
10:36We'll get every excuse in the book,
10:39but you tend to be able to spot it straight away.
10:41As soon as you get that little spidey-sense tingle that something's not right,
10:47you start to think there's a few more red flags than there should be here.
10:51No, no, no.
10:51Mate, you can't drive with no insurance and just insure it when we ask you to provide insurance,
10:55can you?
10:55Right, listen to me.
10:57I'm not going to drive like this without no insurance.
10:58Well, you clearly have been doing it, haven't you?
11:00So what we'll do is we'll give you a ticket for driving with no insurance.
11:04You can have six points, but we'll not take your car off you today.
11:07After eight minutes, the results of the drug swipe are ready.
11:11Ah.
11:12What's up?
11:13All right.
11:13Everything all right?
11:14So you've tested positive cocaine on the drug test machine,
11:18so it's 17 minutes past nine.
11:20You're under arrest.
11:27Take your bag off your head for me, dude.
11:32And then I'm just going to put some cuffs on.
11:33Not because I don't trust you.
11:34It's just we have to.
11:36With the driver detained, Dave arrives to help search his car.
11:40That's not going to be gear, is it?
11:47It is, isn't it?
11:48Drug driving is an incredible frustration
11:51because we see the outcome of it.
11:54We see the absolute devastation it causes.
11:58Families just ripped completely to pieces
12:01because of somebody's selfishness.
12:03That's all it is.
12:05It's literally just selfishness.
12:07That looks like it.
12:08Yeah.
12:09Depends, so you're further under arrest
12:11on suspicion and possession of controlled drugs.
12:13Based on that, we're also going to search your vehicle
12:15under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
12:17Do you understand that?
12:19We're doing Section 23 car.
12:21Yeah.
12:22So is there a likelihood we're going to find out else?
12:26Give a chance to be straight up, please.
12:27No, I'm not personally.
12:29No.
12:29What about in the car?
12:30What about in the car, yeah.
12:31No, no, no.
12:32I'm jumping back forever.
12:37Was it, um...
12:38Just speed a stop?
12:4038, yeah.
12:48He's got the car for me.
12:48Oh.
12:54Sarge.
12:55Yes.
12:56Right, yep, get that bag.
12:58That'll be quite a large quantity of heroin then.
13:00This is going to be the gift that keeps on giving, I'm afraid.
13:07Oh, bless you.
13:08I'm used to searching vehicles for drugs,
13:11and you tend to find that if you find one exhibit,
13:17you're going to keep finding more.
13:19It's rare just to find one.
13:22And again.
13:24Lovely.
13:24People always hide things in the same places.
13:27Um, you know, it's accessible to them.
13:29Uh, it's easy.
13:33Lies.
13:35It's always the same.
13:37I'll tell you what,
13:38that was an unfortunate speeding incident,
13:40wasn't it?
13:40It is.
13:41Heroin.
13:43Correct.
13:44Probably heroin again.
13:46And that's just from under the seat.
13:48You know, it's a busy boy.
13:51All of a sudden,
13:52you're now dealing with
13:53concern of the supplier, Class A.
13:56That's either Kendall Mint Cake or Crack Cocaine.
13:59Is that it?
14:00Mate.
14:01That's as far as we've found so far.
14:04That's what you turf up on traffic stops.
14:06You genuinely never know what you're going to get.
14:10As he's been arrested, he's been searched,
14:12the quantity of drugs found in his pocket.
14:14Then as you can see,
14:15there's further quantities of drugs found within the car,
14:17so he's got a quantity of cash in his man bag as well.
14:20All from a traffic stop.
14:2138 miles an hour in the 30.
14:28That'll be a crack pipe, that one.
14:30Crack pipe?
14:31He's using and running as well, isn't he?
14:35Filter for your crack pipe.
14:36Exactly.
14:38The man will now be taken to custody for questioning,
14:41and Dave can go back on patrol.
14:43I'll have these back at Ripley for you.
14:45Cheers, mate.
14:47So vehicle stops,
14:49they're what we call a gateway offence.
14:52They tend to be just a speeding stop,
14:55and all of a sudden you find an awful lot more.
14:58So this chap's got pre-wrapped crack and heroin.
15:04Heroin again.
15:05Lots of pre-cut into deals,
15:10white and brown,
15:12so that's cocaine and heroin,
15:15and yet more unwrapped heroin.
15:20Beadsides is a little bit like a spider's web.
15:23You never know what you're going to snare in,
15:25and you genuinely never know
15:27what that next car alarm is going to contain.
15:29I thought my batteries were feeling a bit flat.
15:56Five hours later,
15:59Dave's halfway through his night shift.
16:02I'm going to go back down the track.

16:23officer is tracking a car suspected of being involved with drug dealing one of
16:34the most important things for us as traffic cops is we cover the whole
16:38county we constantly monitor the radio channels that cover where you are and I
16:43make a point of it I'm a bit of a stickler for it with no sign of the car
16:49Dave parks up and waits for a sighting contact contact with it as Dave begins
17:00tailing the suspect yes yes great Church Lane junction with Mansfield Road other
17:08units are on their way to back him up when you're a lead car in a pursuit or a
17:16follow your workload is through the roof because you've not only got to do the
17:21main job which is driving in a safe way and but you've also got to coordinate all
17:26your resources thank you to on any local units coming towards us just monitor
17:35channel 2 and I'll pass commentary on that
17:38take a 2-1 it's a right right right it's very info fully marked high performance vehicle advanced
17:46pursuit by train driver vehicles being driven normally at this time it's currently
17:494-0 in a 4-0 now dropping down into a 3-0
17:54can't see how many of you
17:56accuracy brevity clarity which is what we always try and strive for on the radio
18:03it's a massive balancing act you've got to control you've got to make sure that
18:08adrenaline doesn't give you red mist it's probably the most dangerous thing a
18:12police officer would be expected to do it's hard hard work
18:1624 and the local units monitoring this channel that can get up towards village
18:27there received thank you speed is 43 now braking braking it's gonna be a right right
18:39fire arms officers are now also behind dave ready to help if the suspect doesn't stop
18:49coming up a manhunt is underway for the runaway suspects
19:03drones and dogs are called in
19:07getting broke up to help flush out suspected drug dealers
19:10and there's more suspects go on the run items left behind lead to an
19:20investigation
19:21we've got a baseball bat and I'm not sure he's out to play baseball tonight
19:37speed is 4-3 now braking braking it's gonna be a right right ALV you with me
19:41after pursuing a car suspected of having links to drug dealing
19:48traffic cop Dave McAllister and other officers
19:54are on the hunt for runaway suspects
19:582-1 if you've got me on mapping there's a three-way split on this footpath
20:07Roger that thanks
20:10just confirmed if somebody's still with the car yes yes we'll do it as dave starts searching
20:23the woods
20:28traffic cop Adam Shipley launches a drone
20:32we have all the resources available to us drones helicopter dogs however they have a
20:39finite window in which to locate these people you've got basically like a golden hour where you have to try and find somebody
20:52we're just waiting now for the drone
20:55you can hear somebody in there
20:59there's somebody moving through the bushes like literally there I don't know how you get in there
21:05it's in there somewhere
21:08one of them
21:08you can see them pal
21:16they've gone up that way but
21:20there's been one
21:22crushing through the woodland in there
21:24dust
21:25yeah but I think they've gone to ground now
21:28they've gone up there and then in
21:30you've got an eye in the sky
21:32winner
21:33a lot of policing involves trusting your instinct
21:37and believing in what you've perceived
21:40I was certain that I'd heard something in the woods and I didn't stray too far away from it
21:45is there any problems with Peter now?
21:48yeah 2 ARV
21:492 ARV
21:50they should be on this channel pal
21:54police officer with a dog
21:56ship is on the one by the gate
21:59directly underneath you
22:01in front of you now where you're pointing
22:04in here there were some sounds of crashing
22:06everything is made, it's really really thick
22:08it's in the bush
22:10it's in the bush to the muck out
22:11it's in the hole, I'll take my entry
22:12our drone operators are trained search cops on the same radio channel as you
22:19so they're an absolute gods
22:22it covers
22:22it covers a massive area
22:23that it would take
22:25cops on foot
22:26a massive amount of time to cover
22:28also with the heat vision
22:29they can spot something that
22:31be very very difficult to see for the human eye
22:33as Dave is directed from the drone above
22:37keep walking around the park
22:39there's a heat source
22:40in the woods
22:41just knocked the path
22:42the dog handler closes in on the ground
22:45there's probably no one coming in from the far side
22:48there's probably only about a couple of three yards in front
22:51if you have it
22:51just to your left
22:52just to the left and straight up
22:55there's at least three movements in that hedgerow
23:02at least one that's probably gone to ground somewhere there
23:06to my left now
23:12we regularly find ourselves in situations where
23:15like this, it's pitch black
23:17you can't see your hand in front of your face
23:19and you're on your own
23:20you do tend to sometimes have that moment of
23:24what am I really doing here?
23:25yeah the dog's coming towards you
23:30you know how Dave
23:31it just gets really really thick pal
23:36have you been in it?
23:38I've been in but not far
23:39probably about 20 yards

24:42my shoulder
24:45my shoulder
24:47my shoulder
24:48what's your name?
24:48Ah, my shoulder mate, that's what's going off to you, that's fine, but I just want to know what's going off to you, my shoulder mate, I'm being serious, ask him where he's been bitten other than his foot, good work that dog,
25:09when you hear the dog make contact with that suspect, yeah, it's really rewarding, it's satisfying, and it bears out that, you know, I was right.
25:25Can I get off my shoulder please, that's all I'm asking about.
25:27Come on then, you've been arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, I believe you've run from a vehicle, you've also been found in a woodland exactly where the offenders have run to, so.
25:50I've got my excuses for that.
25:52I'm sure you are.
25:54I'm sure you are.
25:56It'll be a very interesting tale when he tries to explain why he was lying in a wood full of thorn bushes at the early hours of the morning for no reason whatsoever.
26:09Perhaps it's his hobby, I don't know.
26:16Mate, cracking find?
26:17Yeah, it was decent, really good find for the dog, I'm dead happy with it.
26:20Thank you for that.
26:21No worries.
26:22Cracking job.
26:25With one suspect heading to custody, Dave turns his attention to what's in the car.
26:31There's a stink of weed in there, lots of evidence of using.
26:35This vehicle's got markers on it for using drug supply.
26:39Dare say this car's just being used for all manner of criminality.
26:42What we have at the minute is at least two lads hiding out there in all those thorns, getting cold and uncomfortable.
26:52As the suspect heads to custody for questioning, the search for the other runaways continues.
26:59Hopefully they'll find them.
27:00If not, there's plenty of forensic opportunities in there.
27:03There's drinks, bottles that are open.
27:05There's loads of stuff that they've touched in there.
27:08And you can see when they get out, they've not got gloves on.
27:11So, forensically, we should be able to idea.
27:14So, good job.
27:15Got the car back.
27:16Got one locked up.
27:17Hopefully more will come.
27:19Yeah, winner.
27:20It's been shocking it down. There's a lot of water on the ground.
27:45Across the country, drug dealing is worth an estimated £9.4 billion a year.
27:54There's nothing so far.
27:56But, well, have a look around.
27:59With drug runners often using cars at night, officers like Paddy Shambrook are always on the lookout for suspicious behaviour.
28:07Might be out early hours or very late at night enforcing debts or, you know, things to do with drug dealing.
28:13Certainly a lot happens overnight.
28:16Paddy spots a car ahead, quickly turning off the main road.
28:22Just a little cheeky vehicle stop.
28:26But if you just see something and you just get that sense that something's not quite right, it's worth checking it out.
28:33The blue lights go on flashing around in the dark. The likelihood is that the police behind you want you to stop straight away when it's safe to do so.
28:45Well, they're not stopping, are they?
28:48I don't know who these people are at all. I don't know what weapons, if any, they're carrying.
28:52I've got very little information apart from two people in this car to make a decision on what to do.
28:57Why is it with people not just pulling over?
28:59Why is it with people not just pulling over?
29:00Why is it with people not just pulling over?
29:01Why is it with people not?
29:06More Ziemshit 3, please, glauben.
29:11With no chance of catching the runners, Paddy searches the car.
29:21Evet, key is in.
29:23Any Oscar, 10 and 1, 3?
29:27Yeah, go ahead.
29:29Yeah, you're right. I was just trying to shout up
29:30because I'd activated blue lights and this car wasn't stopping,
29:33but they've stopped and run off.
29:36So can I have recovery, please, for no licence, no insurance?
29:41A couple of young lads have just run straight off
29:42over the main road in front, red Vauxhall.
29:45Yeah, that's received.
29:47Couldn't see if they were too inside,
29:49so I thought driver originally had just jumped across
29:51to pretend he wasn't driving
29:52and I'd run off out of the passenger side.
29:56I'm just going to search car.
29:58There's a small bag in the middle here
30:02that's got something left in it,
30:04some drugs or something like that, only a very small amount.
30:07But, yeah, it was just a routine stop.
30:09There's a small white bag there, which I'll see shortly,
30:12and it's got a bit of white powder left in it,
30:14just in a small clear wrap,
30:15so that's either something like amphetamine or cocaine.
30:19They're either just using or actually dealing drugs
30:22which is obviously why they didn't want to hang around.
30:25And obviously there's a main road just there.
30:27I didn't want to really be chasing them across there
30:30and take some silly risk with the traffic passing by.
30:33So here we go.
30:36We'll get some gloves and we'll start searching properly.
30:38Bit of a cannabis smoking kit.
30:52It's got a bunch of Rizzlers in here
30:55and a lighter cannabis grinder.
30:58That's all full of cannabis.
31:00It smells a little bit.
31:00It's not as...
31:01It's not much stronger stuff than that, but...
31:03It's just got the remnants in it.
31:08There's some amphet or cocaine.
31:14And they've actually left a bank card with a name on it
31:17and a driving licence, which is to the same person.
31:21So they'll be interesting for inquiries.
31:24That was Driver, who's...
31:25Just enjoys cannabis as well and...
31:28Cocaine and stuff.
31:30They're likely to obviously have been driving under the influence as well,
31:32so it's good to have them off the road.
31:36I'm not coming across many people
31:37that have left quite so much of a treasure trove inside the car
31:41in terms of ID and drugs
31:44and have just run off.
31:45It's why my job can get quite interesting quite quickly
31:51because we've got some cash here.
31:54You know, it could well be quite...
31:56Well, they're there dealing.
31:57They've got small notes and stuff.
31:59But in this pocket here...
32:02We've got, like, a monodock,
32:05similar to what the police carry,
32:07so that's an extendable baton.
32:08And then, right here,
32:16next to Driver's side,
32:17you've got a baseball bat,
32:18and I'm not sure he's out to play baseball tonight.
32:21I think when you find weapons,
32:23I think it just helps reset your focus
32:26on the real risks that, obviously,
32:30we go about doing our job every day
32:31and the possible dangers you face.
32:35Well, it's going to be a door knock to start with linked to him.
32:37Obviously, we don't know, necessarily,
32:40who was driving.
32:42With a bank card and a driving licence
32:45and a car linked to this chap,
32:46it's more than likely that 1 plus 1 equals 2.
32:49So, yeah, we'll go start with the door knock
32:51and see how we get on.
32:56This was the coat on the back seat,
32:57which has got some more cash in it, shall we say.
33:01Which they've had to leave behind.
33:03I've been busy tonight.
33:04There doesn't appear to be that many drugs left in the car,
33:09but obviously all helps the case, doesn't it?
33:10If you've got that amount of cash,
33:12there's a few drugs left now in the car,
33:14weapons and stuff, it all ties together.
33:16We will book these in and see how we get on.
33:22We've gone from a simple traffic stop
33:24to getting offensive weapons and drugs off the street.
33:27But they've certainly been disrupted
33:28with what they've been doing,
33:30whatever it was that evening.
33:33With drugs and a suspect's details found in the car,
33:36they'll be arrested and questioned
33:38on suspicion of drug dealing.
33:40It's been a good stop.
33:42You get a result like this, it's really good.
33:44I'm pleased.
33:46And, yeah, on to the next ones.
33:50Coming up...
33:51There's a female in the car who looks asleep.
33:54Down and out.
33:56I've just found a purse,
33:57what I suspect to be some cocaine as well.
34:00A young mum risks losing everything.
34:02Against the cocaine, there's a red mark there.
34:05To drugs.
34:06At this time, you're under arrest
34:07on suspicion of possession of Class A.
34:09In Chesterfield,
34:31traffic cop Paddy Shambrook
34:32is back out on patrol.
34:35Just had a call come in about
34:36a female in a car park.
34:39Slumped over the wheel
34:40of her car.
34:42They're not sure what's up with her.
34:44We'll just head there and see what we've got.
34:47When you get a call in the middle of the day
34:49and someone's asleep and slumped at the wheel,
34:52your mind is obviously going to
34:53whether they've literally just fallen asleep
34:55because they're tired
34:56or whether it's to do with some sort of impairment
34:59from drugs or alcohol
35:00or some sort of medical episode they're having.
35:04More than 100 drivers are convicted
35:06of getting behind the wheel
35:08whilst drunk or drugged every day.
35:10Officer, that's going to be...
35:12Let's turn them on through.
35:13State 6 is just looking for the car.
35:15Oh, it's there.
35:18Even though the car is stationary,
35:21if Paddy suspects the driver's unfit to drive,
35:24he can take action
35:25to prevent an accident from happening.
35:28Yes, yes, I'm with it.
35:30There's a female in the car who looks asleep.
35:32Heyo.
35:42Heyo.
35:43Are you alright?
35:43Just switch your engine off a minute.
35:45Yeah, sorry.
35:46Oh, right, okay.
35:48What's going on?
35:50Someone's rung in concerned about you, that's all.
35:52Honestly, I've just had a bit of fallout
35:55with a fella last night
35:56going to his feet and I'll stop there.
35:59Right.
36:00So have you just driven here then?
36:02Me?
36:02Yeah.
36:03I mean, earlier I did, yeah.
36:04Yeah.
36:05Well, just jump in my car then for a minute.
36:07Just check your driving licence, etc.
36:09Just hold on to your key
36:12so that no-one else takes it.
36:15One, three females are right.
36:16She's just going to come and sit in my car
36:17and do some checks.
36:20You all right?
36:20Is it your car, Ducky?
36:21Yeah.
36:21Come and sit in my car, mate.
36:23If you've got someone asleep at the wheel
36:25and the engine's running,
36:26there's always a risk there
36:27that the vehicle could be in gear
36:29without the handbrake on
36:30and they could just press the accelerator,
36:32you know, and they could be off.
36:35How are you feeling at the moment?
36:36Have you just fell asleep?
36:37I is.
36:38Yeah.
36:38Right.
36:40So, obviously, because you've driven here,
36:44obviously, you've sat at the wheel there
36:45with the engine on,
36:46I'm going to require to provide
36:47what's called a sample of breath for analysis.
36:50Are you willing to provide
36:51a sample of breath for analysis?
36:53Yeah.
36:53As Paddy tests for alcohol,
36:56traffic cop Matt Cooling arrives to assist.
36:58So, you just lean forwards
37:00and blow.
37:02When you're ready, that's it.
37:02Keep going, keep going, keep going.
37:03Yeah, that's clicked.
37:06Appreciate it.
37:07All right, morning, Cooling.
37:08Hello, Paddy.
37:12Right, you've blown zero there, okay?
37:15The next thing I'm going to do
37:16is what's called a drug wipe with you, okay?
37:20This here is a drug wipe, all right?
37:23And it tests for cannabis and cocaine.
37:26Do you use any cannabis or cocaine or anything like that?
37:28I have done.
37:30Yeah, I've done in the past?
37:31Yeah.
37:31Right.
37:31If you are someone who is going to take recreational drugs,
37:35then you just can't mix that with driving.
37:37You can still be under the influence, you know,
37:38you can still be under the influence, you know, days later, which can impair you.
37:41Because you've said you've previously used drugs, I'm going to require to find a sample, all right,
37:45for analysis on here.
37:46Obviously, you've been seen driving, obviously, when I've arrived, and you've told me you have driven here earlier.
37:53Okay, so required to find a sample of saliva for analysis, all right?
37:57Are you willing to do so?
37:58Yeah.
37:58Okay.
37:59If you're over the drink drive limit or under the influence of recreational drugs,
38:03then you risk still a driving ban because of the high risk you pose.
38:09So if you just lean forwards, just stick your tongue out,
38:13just take some swipes off the air, that's it, just open your mouth,
38:15you have to do the side of your mouth.
38:16The vehicle doesn't have to be moving to be an illegal and to be an offence.
38:22The reason I expect someone's called us in the first place is because
38:26you sort of just slump there with your seatbelts on, the engine's running.
38:30We don't know if you have a diabetic episode, whether you're on drugs, alcohol,
38:34or you're just tired, you know, we don't know, that's all.
38:36But we just have to rule out drugs and alcohol.
38:41But you're just tired if you just had not much sleep overnight.
38:43Just very stressed.
38:44Right.
38:45Okay.
38:48Right.
38:50Leave for it so you can see this.
38:51So against the cannabis, it's clear,
38:54but against the cocaine, there's a red mark there.
38:56Okay.
38:57So it's detected some cocaine in your saliva.
39:00All right.
39:01This can't tell me how much cocaine you've had.
39:04So what we do is we go down to the police station
39:06and we request an evidential sample of blood from you.
39:08And then that will get sent off.
39:10And a few months later, it will come back to me.
39:12It's 11 o'clock.
39:13Okay.
39:13So I'm just telling you at this time,
39:15you're under arrest on suspicion of drug driving.
39:17I think we have seen an increase in drug driving.
39:20I think it's very, very common for people to use recreational drugs
39:23and unfortunately decide to drive as well.
39:27You know, why risk a driving ban for a shellfish short-term decision like that
39:31to drive whilst under the influence?
39:33I've just found in her purse what I suspect to be some cocaine as well.
39:54You know, it's a single-deal bag there
39:56and there's obviously some still left in it.
39:59Whether she's had more than what was originally a bag full or not,
40:03we don't know.
40:03But she's obviously had some,
40:04which is why she's positive on the saliva test.
40:07We see all too frequently the utter devastation
40:10that drug driving can cause to people.
40:12Whether you're hurting yourself or, you know,
40:14more often than not, it's other members of the public.
40:17It's just awful.
40:19At any second, she could have driven off
40:21and we don't know to what level she's impaired at the moment.
40:25And, you know, you can see there's lots and lots of people around.
40:27There's families walking around, there's cyclists going past.
40:30It's a big lump of metal at the end of the day
40:31and if you're impaired, you're more likely to have a collision.
40:36The number of collisions caused by drivers high behind the wheel
40:39has nearly tripled in less than a decade.
40:45Inside your purse is where I found this,
40:49which obviously I suspect that...
40:50Sorry?
40:50Sorry, I'm on there.
40:51OK, well, it's in your possession,
40:53so we'll be interviewed about that,
40:55but I suspect that's cocaine,
40:56so at this time you're under arrest
40:57on suspicion and possession of Class A.
41:06Right, I'm Paddy.
41:08We're going to drive now to Ripley and go through it, all right?
41:12I'm not going to keep you any longer than is necessary, all right?
41:17I've got absolutely zero tolerance for drug drivers
41:19because it's just simply dangerous.
41:23You have a much higher risk of causing serious harm,
41:28but ultimately many people that use drugs are, you know,
41:33by definition vulnerable.
41:35Is there the opportunity to try and have that intervention,
41:38educate them and take them away from it,
41:40or at least try?
41:41It's always worth trying.
41:49Last year, Derbyshire police carried out
41:52over 4,500 seizures of illegal drugs from dealers and users.
41:58Drug use is massive in the UK.
42:00It's a huge crime problem in terms of drug dealing and drug users,
42:04but obviously what we see as the end result
42:07is those people that suffer at the end of that.
42:11The drug supply uses the road network.
42:14They have to transport their goods, their dealers,
42:17their money from point A to point B,
42:19and they use cars to do it.
42:20One of the main jobs of a traffic cop
42:23is to deny criminals the use of the road.
42:26We're getting a lot more serious and fatal collisions
42:29involving drug drivers
42:30because I don't think they realise the effects of the drugs can last.
42:34It causes a massive problem,
42:36both from the road's policing aspect
42:37and the local policing aspect.
42:43In this episode...
42:44That vehicle is crashed.
42:46The two young men from Bradford,
42:49arrested on suspicion of drug dealing,
42:51are currently released under investigation
42:53whilst the police await the results
42:55of forensic phone analysis.
42:58Find something.
42:59Some deals with cannabis.
43:01No drugs were found on the men
43:02when they were searched at the station.
43:05It's 17 minutes past nine, you're under arrest.
43:10The man who tested positive for cocaine at the roadside
43:13is currently released under investigation
43:15under suspicion of drug driving,
43:18no insurance and drug dealing.
43:21That's either Kendall mint cake or crack cocaine.
43:24While the police await the results
43:26of forensic tests on his phone
43:27and the suspected drugs found in his car.
43:31Put your hand behind your back!
43:32I've got a broken shoulder!
43:34The runaway suspect,
43:36caught by Dave and the team,
43:37was arrested under suspicion of car theft
43:40but released without charge.
43:43I've always...
43:44I'm sure you are.
43:45I'm alright, aren't you?
43:46I'm sure you are.
43:48He was not linked to any drug offences
43:50despite the intel on the car.
43:55After two men ran from Paddy
43:57leaving drugs, cash and weapons in the car,
43:59one man has been charged with possession of Class A drugs,
44:03failing to stop for police,
44:05uninsured driving
44:06and possession of offensive weapons.
44:08You've got a baseball bat
