Transcript
00:01Scott straight through the red line.
00:04He's got damage, David.
00:05Don't do that!
00:06Stay still!
00:08Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:10It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:15Don't hold it! You under arrest.
00:16Intent supply class.
00:17It took.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25You got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the UK's most dangerous roads.
00:30Oh, no one's been killed out of this.
00:32I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast you were going?
00:34It's scary when stuff like this happens.
00:37In life and death situations.
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be tased!
00:41We've got runners.
00:43Place down.
00:45Yes, yes, successful stink.
00:49Around every corner.
00:51It's a great acting, mate.
00:54There's a new challenge for the traffic cops.
00:57Step out of the vehicle now!
01:00I'm going home.
01:01Stay, Ned!
01:02Stop grabbing me like that!
01:06It's crash, crash, crash!
01:09Coming up...
01:10It's a bit of a mess here, mate.
01:12We're gonna need EMAS's matter of urgency, please.
01:16Bad crashes.
01:18Two children, one in this one and one in this one.
01:21Causing chaos.
01:22Bit of carnage at the minute, but we're working through it.
01:26Hello, mate, you alright?
01:28And distracted drivers.
01:30This is very precarious.
01:33Putting lives on the line.
01:35Just come away from bus just in case it moves.
01:39All the passengers against that fence, please.
01:41It's at fence, please.
01:50Oscar Tango 23, brief on RTC, M1 Northbound.
01:53Each year, Derbyshire emergency services are called to hundreds of crashes.
02:03Oscar Tango 22, we've got a report of a two-vehicle RTC.
02:07Injuries are reported. EMAS are travelling.
02:09If you need your response, an A.
02:10Most are caused by driver error.
02:15RTC near to Burton appears to be an eight-car pilot.
02:19Being a traffic cop, you are gonna see bad things.
02:24You are going to see destruction and, in the worst sense, death.
02:31And I've seen some pretty horrendous scenes.
02:34Traffic units now come out the way, please, for reports of an RTC.
02:39Hero 1, I'm finding units.
02:41One vehicle's overturned, person trapped.
02:44Vehicle details at this time are unknown.
02:46One golf's going, and I'll put all the Zulu units on it.
02:49Received ops unit attending, can you shout out to your call sign?
02:54Fox 2, a 5-3.
02:56Tango 2, 5.
02:58Tango 2, 5.
03:00Tango 2, 5.
03:02Tango 2, 5.
03:04Traffic cop PC Nick Rice is en route to a serious crash
03:08on one of Derby's busiest roads.
03:11Day in, day out, we deal with collisions.
03:14What we do is traffic cops, whether they are serious or minor,
03:19we deal with them.
03:21Sometimes, things can get reported to us
03:23and they're not quite as bad as they sound.
03:26Sometimes, things are worse.
03:29He's gonna need fire as well.
03:31The vehicle's on his side.
03:32It's a pretty dodgy position.
03:34It's not against the driver at all.
03:36You find out what you're dealing with when you arrive on two.
03:38He's got a new arrival to you.
03:392.5 and a stage 6.
03:402.5 and a stage 6.
03:41Yeah.
03:4224.
03:432-5 and state 6.
04:02Yeah, 24.
04:08There's two in here, Nick.
04:10There's two children.
04:11About one's here.
04:12Okay.
04:15Yeah, and if we need to EMAS, it's a matter of urgency, please.
04:18We've got two people trapped.
04:20One vehicle is partly on each side.
04:21It's on top of another vehicle.
04:23I've got one casualty in the van.
04:25Yes, yes, driver of that one trapped.
04:27Stand by.
04:28The third one is one female in that.
04:33She's not trapped, but she's still in the vehicle.
04:36An 8-Hanger 2-5.
04:37It's a bit of a mess here, mate.
04:38We're going to need two more traffic units if possible.
04:43There are local units here.
04:44What's that?
04:45My trunk don't keep warm.
04:46Hello.
04:46Where's your memory?
04:47Good deal.
04:48It's Laurie.
04:52Don't worry about your car.
04:54No, no.
04:54It's all right.
04:55Are you going to be able to get home, then?
04:56I don't know.
04:58Don't worry about the car.
04:59You're out.
05:00No, I don't want to talk.
05:01It's the main thing, isn't it?
05:01All right?
05:02Oh.
05:02There's two children in these two cars that we need to check.
05:07One in this one and one in this one.
05:10Yeah, they've been in this car.
05:12Some passers-by have rescued two children from the pickup truck.
05:17Came around the corner and we noticed that the barrier was dented and we saw that a car
05:22had gone over, so we stopped to see if we could help.
05:25There were two adults in the front and two kiddies in the back.
05:28Obviously, the kids were very, very scared, so we got the kids out of the car and then
05:32put them in a safe, warm and dry space and then went back in to see if their grown-ups
05:37were okay.
05:41The ultimate priority is life and limb before any investigation.
05:47It's going to be quite a scar on your pickup car, I don't know.
05:50With not being first on scene, people are already being tended to.
05:53So, the next priority comes to safety.
05:56Is everything as safe as it can be at that time?
06:00And then speaking to people to try and figure out what's happened and how it's happened.
06:04Oh, yeah, been better?
06:06Oh, a bit of a day's right.
06:06Yeah.
06:08They should be all right there, mate.
06:10You're in this one, aren't you?
06:11What's happened, mate?
06:13It's just come flying up here.
06:15He's come over the barrier?
06:16Yeah.
06:17Yeah, I'm coming to see you.
06:19I can see now, yeah.
06:23Usually, when people are involved in collisions, it's an incident which they're not used to.
06:30The body's natural reaction to an incident is to pump it full of adrenaline.
06:35And that's got to come down at some point.
06:37And that release can affect people in different ways.
06:43People are upset.
06:46It comes out in emotions or tears or anger or whatever it is.
06:51Do we know where she is?
06:53Ah, she's here.
06:54Nick also talks to the driver of a Ford Fiesta caught up in the collision.
06:58Hello.
07:00Hello.
07:01You like better mornings, haven't you?
07:03How are you?
07:05A bit shaky, but I'm all right.
07:06Yeah?
07:06Are you injured at all?
07:07I don't know.
07:08No?
07:09Are you able to tell me briefly what's happened?
07:11What do you remember?
07:12I was just driving up here and the car just flew over.
07:15Literally flew over.
07:16I didn't see it lose control, so I didn't have any warning.
07:20And literally, I saw it take off and I didn't lose.
07:23Okay.
07:24Have you got any dash cam or anything?
07:26No?
07:26Yeah.
07:27Okay, no worries.
07:27I'll get a few details.
07:29Cool.
07:31The Nissan Navara appears to have been travelling from roundabout direction.
07:35It's come round up the bend into Derby and appears to have lost it on the bend.
07:40It then gone towards the central reservation, gone over the central res and into oncoming traffic.
07:47So it's a crossover in theory.
07:49Bit of a crazy one, to be honest.
07:53Something I've never seen.
07:54He's hit this one on its roof and he's basically landed as is on top of that van.
07:59Quite a serious collision.
08:01We've got HeliMed on route and we've also got casualties down there.
08:05So it's a bit of carnage at the minute, but we're working through it.
08:11How we doing?
08:12Right, hey, mate.
08:13I've got a helicopter on it.
08:14Okay.
08:14Down here.
08:15Down there more than likely.
08:16Yeah, no worries.
08:16They'll work it out when they get here.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Four more DCAs come in and I've got a heart team because we've got lots of resources.
08:21Cool, all right.
08:22It's a very stressful situation to be in.
08:25There's a lot happening, a lot going off.
08:28All emergency services are on scene and everybody's doing their roles.
08:34Medical teams are looking after the patients.
08:37Fire crews are making vehicles safe.
08:39Obviously, we're doing our part.
08:41But it is a hectic situation to be in.
08:45And, yeah, it's just not a nice thing to be dealing with when there's children involved.
08:52N8, Tango 25.
08:53Our heart team has just gone stage six and HeliMed as well.
08:57That is confirmed.
08:59Traffic cop Sergeant Adam Shipley arrives on the scene.
09:02That's the female passenger out of this one.
09:06There's two in that one.
09:07There were children in that one as well.
09:09I've got no details from them at the minute, obviously.
09:12They're cutting driver out now.
09:13I think they're a bit concerned about driver.
09:15And female from this one.
09:17She's just a bit shook up.
09:18No injuries.
09:18The one behind, the guy sat on the edge there with the head wound.
09:23He's out of that.
09:24I've got all his details.
09:25I think he's just waiting to be seen by somebody.
09:27But obviously, the priority at the minute is these.
09:31I realise he was crossed over.
09:33Well, I didn't until I started talking to people.
09:35I didn't see all this.
09:40Driver is out.
09:43He's on his way to QMC now.
09:45They have strapped him to a spinal cord.
09:48The driver of the van crushed by the pickup has escaped without serious injury.
09:59So you are.
10:03He is incredibly lucky.
10:07You should look at the mechanics of it all.
10:10You don't expect, when you're just driving along another vehicle,
10:12to just shoot across a carriageway and land on your bonnet, do you?
10:15I mean, it's credit to how well vehicles are built nowadays.
10:19Something that heavy, coming at speed, lands on your bonnet,
10:23and you manage to walk out.
10:26It's remarkable, really.
10:28All patients are off to hospital.
10:33We've got officers going to hospital to do procedures with them
10:36and speak to them about what's happened.
10:38We guard the scene now and what we do.
10:40We've got a collision investigation unit.
10:42They're going to take all photographs and map the area
10:44and provide a sketch and an overview of what's happened
10:47and how it's led to this.
10:49We don't wholly know what the outcome of the injuries are going to be.
10:52It is going to be life-changing and we'll need all that information
10:55if we're looking at a prosecution going forward.
11:01Crash investigator Mick Street is hoping that some of the information
11:05has been recorded within the Navarra itself.
11:09There's potential we can download data from the car,
11:12from the airbag module,
11:14which will give us five seconds of data
11:17from before the airbags have deployed.
11:20So that will potentially give us speed,
11:21position, steering inputs and things like that,
11:24where the seatbelt's been worn.
11:26It's obviously lost it some way up there
11:28and potentially been upside down
11:30when it's hit the red Fiesta
11:31and then rolled back again onto the top of the van.
11:35It's likely to be speed.
11:37That's not to say that a defect with the vehicle could cause that,
11:40but from experience, it's more than likely speed that's caused it.
11:44Quite a few of the parts have got what Navarra's dribbled on, haven't they,
11:50and it's no keeper.
11:52Yeah, I'm wondering if it's a clone's worth.
11:57Examining the truck,
11:59Adam and the crash investigators spot something irregular.
12:03On the front of the vehicle,
12:05you can see basically something's written in yellow pen,
12:08Navarra.
12:10So those parts have obviously been replaced
12:11with a scrapyard or a breaker's yard.
12:14As is the inner of the rear-large.
12:17All in all, it looked like it had a front-end impact before
12:20and the back's had certain parts replaced.
12:24So it's going to need a bit more investigation
12:26to make sure it is a genuine vehicle,
12:28they're not stolen,
12:29they've not basically gone to a chop shop
12:32and up various parts of stolen ones
12:35and damaged ones together
12:37to make it on the vehicle.
12:39According to DVLA records, it's in trade,
12:41there's no registered owner for it.
12:42With that and the fact it's got this written on them,
12:46we need to look at our investigation.
12:48The vehicle will be forensically examined
12:52and with the driver suffering potentially life-changing injuries,
12:56there will also be a formal investigation.
13:03It's the early days,
13:04but he's obviously got some questions to answer
13:07for that carnage to have happened,
13:08so we just need to get to the bottom of what it is
13:10and how it's happened.
13:14Sometimes you're not always going to get
13:16the answers that you want.
13:18Personally, I don't feel that
13:19the whole truth will ever come out in this one.
13:36You see how close he is on that bank?
13:39Coming up.
13:40Professional drivers making mistakes at work.
13:44This lorry is right on the edge.
13:46It's twitchy-bum time, this one.
13:49All the passengers off the bus.
13:51Putting their lives...
13:53Not effluentic, nothing like that.
13:55...and others at risk.
13:56And they have to get a tango, two, three.
13:58Ambulance is running to a police car.
14:00Traffic cop, PC Rich Morris, is being dispatched to a crash on a busy road.
14:06Near the Staffordshire border.
14:08Half one on a Tuesday morning.
14:10Half one on a Tuesday morning.
14:11And we've just had a report of...
14:13...a lorry, which has gone through...
14:14...and we've just had a report of a lorry, which has gone through...
14:17...a bridge over the River Dove.
14:17It's hanging over the edge.
14:18...drivers trapped.
14:19So...
14:19...and we've just had a lorry, which has gone through a bridge over the River Dove.
14:20It's hanging over the edge.
14:21Drivers trapped.
14:22So...
14:23...we've just had a report of a lorry, which has gone through a bridge over the River Dove.
14:24It's hanging over the edge, but it's from the edge, driving down on a bridge.
14:30It's a traffic car.
14:32Here's Tom B audio.
14:34When did he click on the cover?
14:35Yeah.
14:36I don't know.
14:37Yeah.
14:38I don't know.
14:39Okay, what's the case?
14:40I'm going to touch the end.
14:41I'm going to touch the end.
14:42I'm on the edge.
14:43So, it's hiding a car.
14:44I'm going to touch the front, and I'm going to touch the front, but it's weird.
14:49That's really kind of a problem.
14:50I don't know what it's going to court.
14:51I don't know what it is.
14:52The clerks are.
14:53I find it bizarre, it's a straight bit of road there, so I don't really know what's going on.
15:20Hello mate, you alright?
15:24NA Tango 1-0?
15:27Yeah, this lorry, front wheels are hanging over into the river, driver is still in the cab.
15:34He's alright, we're talking to him now, but can we get an ETA for fire service please?
15:40This is, it's very precarious.
15:45You have to question how the hell that's happened.
15:50The driver can't get out of his cab because he's over the water.
15:55The trailer is keeping it from going into the river.
15:59If that cab had gone a little bit further, it would have gone down into the river and the trailer would have followed it.
16:06And it would have crushed that cab under the water and that driver, he'd have drowned in his cab.
16:12There's no doubt about that. I've never quite seen one like that before.
16:16Well, you've done it in style, haven't you?
16:23Yeah, I've got fire service coming out, they've got some right kit.
16:27I've got nothing.
16:28I've got some cones in my boot, that's about it, but I don't think they're going to help us at the moment, are they?
16:35NA Tango 1-0?
16:38Just sort of preempting it, we are going to need heavy recovery.
16:42I'm just going to find out if he's loaded or not.
16:45I think he probably will be because I can hear his chillers running.
16:48What weight you got?
16:49I think the weight is not heavy, it's only salads.
16:52It's just salad.
16:54Yeah, obviously it's a heavy, it's got a full-size trailer on.
17:00It's full of salad stuff, so it's not going to be running at 44, but it's still obviously going to have significant weight.
17:07Where the river is, the trailer is right on the edge of the banking.
17:12So fire service are going to need to initially secure it, and then we're going to try and get it dragged out as well.
17:20It's pretty dangerous, to be honest. If you look right down there, you've got the river dove.
17:26This lorry is right on the edge.
17:29I don't know how it's not gone over, to be honest.
17:32The river's quite deep there as well, quite fast flowing, so it'll be a difficult extraction, this one.
17:40Several fire crews arrived to rescue the driver from his cab.
17:44Yeah, two, four, fire, state six.
17:47I've got fire service here now, mate. What they'll do, they'll get this secure, so it can't go off, and then they'll get you out, alright?
17:56What's your name?
17:58Right. Heyo, mate.
17:59Hiya.
18:01Hiya.
18:02In a bit of a tricky position at the moment.
18:04Just handful.
18:06Nobody else in the cab?
18:07Can you just make sure he stays there?
18:09Yeah, he's not going anywhere. Yeah, that's fine. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:11Down to the fire service, do their magic now.
18:26You don't see many like this, do you?
18:28You see how close he is on that bank?
18:30I think if it were a full 44-tonne, I reckon that banking would have gone and it would have pushed him over.
18:39The driver's got his head in his hands, I'm not surprised.
18:41Yeah, I wouldn't fancy being in his position.
18:44Fire service, you've got to secure it first, get him out.
18:48Then we've got to work out how we're going to extract this vehicle from here.
18:51Traffic cop PC Paul Barker joins Rich.
18:57You're going to have to inform the highways to get a structural engineer out for the bridge as well.
19:02Fire rent agency might need to be told because his fuel tank is right on the edge and it might rupture when it's pulled off.
19:14The fire crew secures the truck to prevent it slipping into the river.
19:18Where the back window would be, they're going to open all that back up.
19:23Like, if you like a tin opener, they're going to cut that back open and extract the driver through that.
19:34It's definitely an interesting one. Logistically, it's difficult and yeah, it's twitchy bum time, this one.
19:41You've got plenty of paramedics and ambulance staff, if something does go wrong.
19:54It's important when we've got a major incident like this, that everybody knows their role.
19:59OK, it's all right? Yeah, bye.
20:02OK, it's all right? Yeah, bye.
20:22Smashed it, smashed it like that.
20:24Can you hold the driver there now while we sort out his line?
20:36You all right? Yeah, off the bus.
20:40Can you come over here? Can you support him the other side?
20:44Duck down under there.
20:46Nice one. Can you support him there? Yeah.
20:48Well, that's an ordeal, wasn't it?
20:54Cheers, mate.
20:56Paul needs to establish how the lorry came off the road.
21:00Can I tell you what happened?
21:02Carefully. The other way.
21:04The main beam on.
21:06Dazzled.
21:07Before I knew it, the bend were there and I'm gone.
21:09All right.
21:11I was just coming down the road. Dazzled.
21:13Lost sight. Before I knew it, the bridge was on me and that were it.
21:15A couple of expletives out of my mouth and then I was straight into the wall.
21:20And when it went to over the edge, I thought, that's it.
21:23Well, thankfully, I'm here.
21:25Just when you see nothing and then you're hanging over the edge,
21:29you know there's a drop. There's got to be.
21:31Looking at it now, I feel as hard as to win the lottery.
21:35That's how I knew the curtains.
21:37I'm going to sit on here for a bit of warm.
21:41Go and get checked out with them, mate.
21:43We've got a couple of things we need to do with you as well.
21:46But the main thing is, make sure that you're safe and well before we get on.
21:51All your stuff's just there, pal.
21:53All right. Did I hear?
21:54Yeah.
21:55What we'll do, mate.
21:56Obviously, a lot's taken and a lot's happened.
21:59We'll just do just a quick set of checks for you, mate.
22:02Just take hold of that to you for us.
22:04It's blown zero.
22:05The only thing about the setting I stand reported for the quest
22:08is to be considered plus Q2 for careless driving.
22:10You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence
22:12if you don't mention those.
22:13Something to which later in the court, anything you do say, may we do nervous.
22:16Have you got any questions?
22:18I just feel lucky to be all right.
22:20Yeah.
22:21Yeah.
22:23He's gone too fast around the bend, basically, and he's lost it.
22:26It has shook him up, but hopefully he'll learn from it.
22:30He's been reported for careless driving
22:32because nobody else has gone over the edge tonight,
22:34so there's not any reason why he shouldn't have negotiated that bend.
22:39The majority of crashes aren't caused by deliberate dangerous driving.
22:45There's always a reason for a collision.
22:46Very rarely is it a mechanical defect.
22:49It's normally somebody not paying attention,
22:51their mind's on the holiday they've got booked.
22:54They're thinking about that,
22:55and they're not thinking about what they should be doing,
22:58and through just a lapse in concentration,
23:00they've ended up in a collision that could change their life.
23:04Yeah, excellent. Thank you.
23:05Thank you so much.
23:07Cheers.
23:09If you feel like your attention's going,
23:11I think you need to be taking a break,
23:13going to a lay-by services,
23:14have a little nap or whatever,
23:16but you definitely shouldn't be driving
23:18if your concentration is wandering.
23:20You need to be switched on all the time.
23:22It's just not worth it.
23:25The road will remain closed until the lorries retrieve from the bridge.
23:29We'll get the bridge safe so that it can be used,
23:34get the road open again,
23:35because this is a busy road,
23:36so it needs to be open again,
23:38and it takes as long as it takes.
23:40Coming up...
23:44Pivoting on the front end.
23:46A bus driver losing control.
23:48Definitely looks like a driver error on this one.
23:52An ambulance crash.
23:53I think the humbrake's gone on it.
23:58And a high-speed collision.
24:00It's been rear-ended by this one here,
24:01who's failed to see it.
24:03We've had a report of an RTC.
24:19Ambulance are travelling.
24:21Have we got an Oster Tango unit, please?
24:24State 2.
24:25Chesterfield, acknowledge.
24:27So, we've got a report of an RTC.
24:30A bus has left the road
24:31and gone into a field with 20 passengers on.
24:34Traffic cop PC Craig Dawes
24:36has been dispatched to the Chesterfield area
24:38to manage the scene.
24:41If you've got a bus in the field,
24:42we don't know what state people's in, any injuries,
24:45who's on the bus, women, children, elderly,
24:48we're just not sure yet.
24:52Crashes with buses are quite rare.
24:54We get little scuffs or clipped wing mirrors
24:57that get reported,
24:58but to actually go to a proper collision
25:00involving a bus is very, very rare.
25:03Two, three, I'm just trying to locate it.
25:08People are going to get thrown around.
25:10So, the last thing you want to be doing
25:11is going to a crash involving a bus.
25:15Two, three, state six with this bus now.
25:17Oh, it's just down there.
25:18.
25:20There's just one injury.
25:23Yep.
25:24Right up the floor.
25:25Local police have arrived ahead of Craig.
25:27Is she diabetic or anything like that?
25:28Nope.
25:29It's not epilepsy, nothing like that.
25:31Police have arrived ahead of Craig.
25:34Is she diabetic or anything like that?
25:37No.
25:38She's not epileptic, nothing like that.
25:41LA from 2-3.
25:43We've got one injured so far.
25:45All the passengers are off.
25:46We will need fire just to secure it.
25:50Just come away from bus for us
25:52just in case anything happens or it moves.
25:56Power and everything's cut off, is it, bus?
25:58Fuel and everything's gone.
25:59All the passengers of the bus.
26:02Can I get all the passengers against that fence
26:04so we know who's on it, please?
26:07Yeah, we call fire.
26:10Single-decker.
26:12Everything's been cut off,
26:14so there's nothing leaking.
26:17It's actually gone through an edge,
26:18but it's pivoted on the front end with its back end.
26:21It does look stable, but I want it double-checked.
26:24My first thought says when I arrive is,
26:26you know, obviously buses don't have seatbelts,
26:29so I'm going to have quite a few injured people here.
26:32But you've got minor bruising, cuts, abrasions and things like that,
26:36but when you look at the bigger picture,
26:38I was lucky that nobody's seriously injured.
26:42The female we've got on the floor,
26:43we believe, is more panic and shock rather than any injury.
26:48You've got elderly people, you've got children.
26:51It must have been absolutely terrifying.
26:53Can I just get you just to go back to the fence for us?
26:56I just don't want anything rolling or moving or dropping on.
26:59Yeah, yeah, nice one.
27:01What we need to do after is you go round each individual passenger,
27:04just go and see the details on the body cam.
27:06Don't go writing them down at this point,
27:08because it'll just take too long.
27:09Dressing phone number.
27:10We've got loads of all cops on here as well.
27:12Right, no problem.
27:14And Nathan, two, three.
27:16As there's no serious injuries at this point,
27:19can we get heavy recovery rolling, please, for this bus?
27:23And it is going to need a mechanical exam as well.
27:31Are you doing all right?
27:33What we're doing now, we've got fire.
27:35They're going to secure the bus and make sure that's all right.
27:40We're making sure that the road's secure.
27:42And it's just really making sure that nobody walks around,
27:45making sure that the driver's OK, getting his account and so on.
27:48At the moment, we've got one female that needs to be in shock.
27:55A few walking wounded, but nothing pressing.
27:58As Craig briefs paramedics...
28:02Oh, no.
28:05..there's another collision.
28:07N-A-O-S-K-A-T-A-N-G-O-2-3.
28:10Ambulance has possibly not left their handbrake on,
28:13and it's running to a police car.
28:15Is it on?
28:17Put it into park.
28:19The police car was unattended,
28:21and so was the ambulance, unfortunately.
28:24Do you want to reverse it back?
28:25It's rolling.
28:27Is it still rolling, is it?
28:29Yeah.
28:29Is it automatic?
28:30Yeah.
28:31So it should be in park?
28:32Yeah.
28:33It's been right near the top ratchet.
28:35Once you've reversed it back, keep your foot on brake.
28:37Fire are going to put them blocks under.
28:40Then we can test the handbrake as well.
28:43Said it's on the top.
28:44It's like, it's still rolling.
28:45You've got to feel it.
28:45Yeah, it is.
28:49Right up.
28:50It weren't in park.
28:52Put it in and it's still rolled.
28:54That's rolling now, look.
28:55Because it's in.
28:56That's with the handbrake on.
28:56So the handbrake's knackered,
28:57but once it's in park,
29:00park is holding it.
29:01The handbrake's no good on it.
29:03I'll give you that.
29:03It's right up and it clicks.
29:04Right, come on.
29:09An eight from two, three.
29:10The handbrake in the ambulance is defect.
29:14It's all the way up and it goes past.
29:16When the vehicle is in park, it does hold it,
29:18so I think they've got out quickly,
29:20left it in neutral, put the handbrake on,
29:22and obviously it's rolled.
29:24It's turned up.
29:25It doesn't look like they put it in park,
29:27which, you know, you jump out,
29:29you put the handbrake on in a vehicle.
29:32You know, her first priority and thoughts are the patient.
29:36You know, she's come here to treat somebody.
29:38Luckily, it's travelled a short distance
29:41and ran into the police car.
29:43You know, the last thing we wanted is doing
29:45is travelling a great distance,
29:47hitting a member of public,
29:48or, you know, going into the bus
29:49and tipping the bus over,
29:50because pretty much where it was aiming,
29:53that would have been what would have happened.
29:55You've just got to have your wits about you
29:57all the time when you're at a scene.
29:59You know, it's not just what you're dealing with,
30:02it's things that's gone off around you.
30:05You know, you've got to constantly be aware
30:07of what could happen.
30:10Wouldn't knock you off for dangerous driving.
30:13I'm joking.
30:15Honestly, what are we going to start with?
30:17Right, we can get back to the original one now.
30:21The woman said it's going down the road
30:23and it's like felt a bump,
30:24so I'm just going to have a look.
30:26Just checking the road,
30:27see if there's any potholes or anything.
30:33Don't look to be anything.
30:36Passenger felt it like a bump,
30:38lift up in there and go,
30:39but I'm thinking that's what it's hit the curb
30:41and done that, so...
30:43The fire service is working to make the bus
30:50and surrounding area safe.
30:53Stabilisation-wise, there's not much we can do for it,
30:55to be honest.
30:55It is where it is and brakes on.
30:58We'll get rid of fuel
30:59and if we can, there's an emergency
31:01to cut off in the cab.
31:03Yeah.
31:03No problem.
31:04What we'll do is just try and keep everybody away
31:06and then wait for Boris to come.
31:08Everyone's out of the field now.
31:10It's just a bit fit now, really.
31:12Brilliant.
31:13So what I'm going to do is
31:14and everybody that's been seen, spoken to
31:16and all details gone,
31:17once they've gone, they can go.
31:19Just get them on the log
31:19and then we'll keep the driver.
31:21The driver's blown zero.
31:24I do believe that there will be footage,
31:26dash cam and stuff on the bus.
31:27Yeah.
31:27That's my next thing.
31:28Thanks a lot for that.
31:33Hey, you've got dash cam footage on your buses.
31:35Yeah, yeah, they're all open.
31:36It's all that, so we'll keep that.
31:38So what's happening?
31:39Yeah, so it's a bit of a dodgy corner.
31:43Yeah.
31:43And I came down here.
31:45Yeah.
31:46And I told you,
31:48I just came around here.
31:50I must have took it a bit too early
31:51coming around the bend way too early.
31:55And it's just hit the curb and that's...
31:57OK, so you've just poor manoeuvrability then, really.
32:01Is that what you're saying on it?
32:02OK, no problem.
32:05This one's quite unique, the crash,
32:07because it's on a pretty straight bit of road.
32:10You know, nobody's run out.
32:11They're not to swerve.
32:12They're not travelling at a high speed.
32:14So it was very, very strange at first.
32:19Craig and his colleagues hope dash cam footage
32:22will shed light on what went wrong.
32:26It'll turn right in a minute.
32:31It's been burned.
32:32It's a very strange.
32:38What the fuck is off man?
32:40He's not having any crash there.
32:42You know, just like...
32:43Leading up to it,
32:44he just seemed to be rocking a bit, doesn't he?
32:46He's acting too...
32:47I thought you were checking it very soon.
32:49Yeah, I thought you were looking up time round.
32:51I thought you were just...
32:52I've been quite observing.
32:53Yeah, I did, yeah.
32:54Yeah, but he's looking around again.
32:58Looking around again.
32:59He's looked proper left when he does it.
33:11It's weird, isn't it?
33:21That could have been a lot worse.
33:24The passengers have done really well, to be fair, haven't they?
33:27That was a double factor.
33:30Very, very strange.
33:31Straight away, it definitely looks like it's driver error on this one.
33:37I'm just going to report to you now, driving a motor vehicle,
33:39without due care of attention.
33:41So you don't have to say anything, but it may harm the defense.
33:43You're not mentioned now, something you're trying to cut.
33:45If you do say, it may be used in evidence.
33:47Due care is the most form of prosecution we deal with.
33:51Because you have dangerous and you have due care.
33:53It fell below a competent driver, as you've made the mistake
33:56when you got into there.
33:57So don't worry about it.
33:59You'll get a letter through the post.
34:02Yeah.
34:03And we'll do that all right.
34:05The driver potentially faces a fine of up to £5,000.
34:10Nine points on his license or a total ban.
34:13Nobody sets out to cause a collision.
34:16You know, it's normally circumstances have unfolded,
34:19and that's what's caused it.
34:21You know, it could be just a lack of concentration.
34:25We've also got a duty of care to the driver as well.
34:28We've got to show that bit of empathy.
34:30Just travelling that road every day,
34:32and he's been involved in a serious crash.
34:34As far as he's concerned, his world's just ended.
34:38We've got two walking wounded
34:40that's going to go to Chesfield for a check-up.
34:43I think it's more bruising and shock.
34:46We're going to get it forensically recovered
34:47just to make sure that there's no defect issues
34:50or any negation of that.
34:52There's been some very, very, very lucky passengers on there.
34:55You know, thankfully, nobody's seriously injured.
35:00There's nothing loose.
35:01That's okay to use tonight.
35:03Cracking.
35:04And obviously, we've got the ambulance versus police car crash to sort out,
35:08which I think the driver of the ambulance is embarrassed.
35:13But, you know, these things happen.
35:16It just shows you you couldn't write what we do.
35:18You know, you're at a bus crash,
35:19and then you have an ambulance roll into a police car.
35:22There's never a door moment being a traffic officer,
35:25and that's why I enjoy the job.
35:27It's just what it is.
35:32They're like us, aren't they?
35:33They're driving all the time.
35:34You know, he's not intentionally driven recklessly.
35:37He just made that one misjudgment
35:38and put it through the edge.
35:44Coming up...
35:45We've come across this RTC.
35:48A momentary lapse of concentration.
35:51There's nothing left at the back.
35:53Causes a major collision.
35:55Possibly looking at a fake book.
35:57The call originally did come from ambulance.
36:02Injuries at this time are unknown.
36:04Two, three lighting clear.
36:05Craig Dawes is travelling to a crash on a dual carriageway,
36:06running through West Derby.
36:07We're on route to a reported broken down vehicle,
36:09an A38 northbound.
36:10But since we've had the call for the broken down vehicle,
36:11we're on route to a reported broken down vehicle,
36:12an A38 northbound.
36:13But since we've had the call for the broken down,
36:15it appears that a vehicle's now collided with the back of it.
36:17Possibly debris all over the place.
36:18So we need to obviously get there as quick as we can.
36:20We've had the call for the broken down,
36:22it appears that a vehicle's now collided with the back of it.
36:24Possibly debris all over the place.
36:25So we need to obviously get there as quick as possible.
36:26And make sure that we can, you know,
36:27safeguard everybody there.
36:28It's on an unlit stretch of the road.
36:29And we're on the road.
36:30It's on the road.
36:31The road is travelling to a crash on a dual carriageway,
36:33running through West Derby.
36:34We're on route to a reported broken down vehicle,
36:35an A38 northbound.
36:36But since we've had the call for the broken down,
36:39it appears that a vehicle's now collided with the back of it.
36:42Possibly debris all over the place.
36:45So we need to obviously get there as quick as possible.
36:48And make sure that we can, you know,
36:50we can safeguard everybody there.
36:52It's on an unlit stretch of the A38.
36:55So if, you know, there's no hard shoulders or anything,
36:58it's going to drop into a live lane.
37:16How you doing? You alright?
37:17Yeah.
37:18We've come across this RTC white vehicle.
37:21Broken down.
37:23It's broken down.
37:24Owners have gone in back.
37:25Who's the driver of the one that's been hit?
37:27BMW.
37:28You're the BMW driver.
37:29Okay.
37:30No problem.
37:31You got your driving license on here?
37:32It's alright.
37:33Don't worry.
37:34You've not done anything wrong.
37:35You're the white one.
37:36Sorry, who's the driver of this black one here?
37:37It's a chill.
37:38He's in the back of the ambulance.
37:39Is he brilliant?
37:40Let me just get recovery rolling.
37:42Hey, can I have recovery for two vehicles, please?
37:45I can't see.
37:46There's nothing left at the back end of this one.
37:48Back with me.
37:49That's going to want a full lift as well, please.
37:51Hey, that's just stuck on the barrier.
37:53And let highways know there's barrier damage as well.
37:57It's three times more dangerous to break down in a live lane than on an emergency hard shoulder.
38:07So, basically, what's happened is the white vehicle's been broken down.
38:12Thankfully, they've had the sense to get out.
38:17And then it's been rear-ended by this one here who's failed to see it.
38:21If you look at the back of the white one, there's nothing left at the back.
38:24You know, if that had been somebody in the back of that, we would have possibly been looking at a fatal.
38:31Is the driver okay of this one?
38:33I'm feeling a bit of pain in this chest.
38:36Right.
38:37I think you can wear the airbag.
38:38Yeah, yeah.
38:39But the fact that he's in that car at 65cm per hour, I'm going to take him up to RDA.
38:43Yeah, I'll just get some details from him.
38:48Oh, can I come in here?
38:51Oh, dog's in here and all.
38:53Well, he's outside.
38:54Hey, dog all right?
38:55Are you all right?
38:56Hey?
38:57Oh, I bet that made you frightened, didn't it?
39:01Hey?
39:02OK, mate, what's happened?
39:04Oh, coming back home.
39:08I think I overtook something and then pulled back in.
39:13Yeah, I didn't see it worth taking a car.
39:15Luckily the girl weren't inside.
39:17No, well, she's had the common sense to get out, which is great.
39:23Now, are you?
39:24You all right?
39:25Obviously, I could be a little bit short.
39:26Yeah.
39:27Yeah.
39:28Well, it could have been a lot worse, couldn't it, at that speed.
39:30I think I know in 65.
39:31Yeah, well.
39:32Hey.
39:33Do you need to go and get checked up as well?
39:35Yeah.
39:36I think she weren't strapped, in fact.
39:38Oh, I see.
39:39Hey, do you know what?
39:40It's one good thing, then, that you take it serious as well.
39:43Because, obviously, if she hadn't been strapped in, she could have been there.
39:45Yeah, she would have been there.
39:46Yeah.
39:47Yeah.
39:48Over a third of all UK collisions are caused when drivers don't see other vehicles when
39:54changing lanes.
39:55Nobody sets out to cause a collision.
39:58Years ago, it used to be called road traffic accidents, but we now cause them collisions
40:02because through time it's been established that it's somebody's mistake that causes them.
40:07If you pay attention and, you know, drive to how you should do, then, you know, most collisions
40:13are avoidable.
40:14Have you got somebody coming to collect you, you say?
40:17They're literally about to.
40:19You need a statement.
40:20My car was the one that was parked.
40:22Listen, it's obviously his fault, but it's one of them unfortunate things where he's pulled
40:29back in, he's not expecting a parked car, travelling at 60, it's unlit, you know, and
40:34he's...
40:35No, they're my hazards.
40:36No, no, the road's unlit, the road's unlit.
40:40You're totally faultless.
40:41You know, at least you've done the right thing by getting out of the car and not sitting
40:47in it, because obviously it could have been a different story.
40:51I bet it made a bang when it hit it, didn't it?
40:53Yeah, it was.
40:54My car was here.
40:55Yeah.
40:56All we have to say is thankfully nobody's injured.
40:58That's all we say.
40:59Is he okay?
41:00Yeah, he's fine.
41:01Obviously, he's got a little bit shook up where the airbags have been activated.
41:04Dog's fine.
41:05Metal can be replaced, obviously, if humans can't.
41:08As you can see, it's got massive front impact damage.
41:15Airbags have been deployed.
41:17But do you know what?
41:18People are going about securing the children in the car, but nobody really thinks about
41:23securing the pets.
41:24Fortunately, the gentleman of this vehicle, you know, he's got a proper harness and lead
41:29for the dog.
41:30Whereas if he hadn't have done, probably gone through the gap.
41:33Straight to the windscreen at 60 mile an hour.
41:36It's strange, you know.
41:41You don't realise it's happened until it's over.
41:44You know, accidents happen.
41:46So they say, well, you know, I think they're going to happen to you, do you?
41:53We're going to have to put a foreclosure on now on the A38 while we get these vehicles
41:58recovered.
41:59It's going to put a bit of disruption.
42:01But, you know, when it's dark like this, we need a safe working environment.
42:05So the only way to do that is to put a foreclosure on.
42:09Both cars are completely totaled, which you expect when they're in a 70 mile an hour impact.
42:15Just the hazards of driving.
42:17Always pay attention.
42:23Every time a driver enters a car, starts that engine and sets off on their journey.
42:27They're responsible for their actions.
42:29And if they drive without paying attention, then unfortunately you do take the consequences.
42:34And sometimes, you know, that is prison.
42:37In an ideal world, we'd all like to say people concentrate and nothing would happen.
42:42But in reality, people make mistakes.
42:45Unfortunately, one silly mistake can change your life forever.
42:49In this episode...
42:50We need EMAS matter of urgency, please.
42:51We've got two people trapped.
42:52The driver of the Navara truck remains in hospital in a critical condition.
43:07There's two children that need to check. One in this one and one in this one.
43:11The female passenger is recuperating out of hospital and the two children have made full recoveries.
43:16The Nissan Navara appears to have lost it on the bend, gone over the central res and into oncoming traffic.
43:23No further action was taken by police in relation to the accident.
43:28The truck driver, who jackknifed on a bridge, was summoned to court for careless driving and completed a driver awareness course.
43:49No further action was taken against him.
43:56All the passengers come away from bus just in case it moves.
44:00In the case of the crashed bus, the driver was prosecuted for driving without due care and attention.
44:07Definitely looks like driver error on this one.
44:10And received a £500 fine and five points on his licence.
44:14No further action was taken with regards to the ambulance.
44:18He's been rear-ended by this one here. He's failed to see it.
44:25I overtook some wind and then the wind pulled back in. I didn't see it was taken with a car.
44:31And no action was taken against the driver, who crashed into a broken down car in a live lane.
44:38He said there's nothing left of the back.
44:40You know, if that had been somebody in the back of that, we would have possibly been looking at a fatal.
44:45Hello.
45:10You
