00:38Fast forward to 1961, JFK makes food stamps a campaign promise and launches pilot programs right after taking office.

00:45By 1964, it is permanent.

00:47And over the decades, presidents have put their spin on the system.

00:50Nixon expanded it.

00:52Carter removed the buy-in.

00:53Reagan cut funding and added work requirements and also piloted electronic benefit transfer, or EBT cards.

00:59Bush brought legal immigrants back in and renamed it SNAP.

01:03And during COVID, Trump boosted benefits by 40%.
