00:00Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro says that the U.S. government is attempting to impose a political, military and economic hegemony that he no longer possesses.
00:23In the United States, Democrat Soran Mamdani has been elected as the mayor of New York City.
00:30In Palestine, the United Nations World Food Programme calls for opening more crossings to deliver much-needed aid into the gas strip.
00:42Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Le Zoo Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin the news.
01:00Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro say that the U.S. government is attempting to impose a political, military and economic hegemony that it no longer possesses.
01:08Speaking during the Fifth Congress of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela and the Fourth Congress of the Socialist Youth, Maduro claimed that the United States seeks to compel both global powers and non-powers, as well as all regions of the world, to obey its mandate in an effort to sustain its dominance.
01:22The head of state praised the courage of the Venezuelan people in facing what he described as threats and attacks from U.S. imperialism.
01:29He further emphasized that Venezuelans must be prepared to defend their right to freedom through all available forms of struggle and organization.
01:36The U.S. Empire seeks to forcibly impose a political, military, cultural and economic hegemony rooted in a power it no longer holds. It aims to compel both global powers and non-powers, as well as every region of the world, to obey its mandates and sustain its dominance.
02:03They have chosen to play the Mad Men engaging in many games, as you well know. Today, they have decided to play the game of threats, of shouting, of death and blood. The stage for this demonstration effect is Gaza.
02:28The stage for the demonstration effect is Gaza.
02:35President Nicolas Maduro asserted that Latin America would not allow the U.S. Empire to humiliate Venezuela and will stand firm in defending the nation's peace and sovereignty.
02:43There are millions.
02:44There are millions inspired by the idea of homeland within the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and millions more infused with the spirit of anti-imperialist, anti-interventionist freedom across Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Panama, Central America, Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua and all of our Latin Caribbean America.
03:12If Venezuela were to be touched, do they really believe the people would allow themselves to be humiliated? If Venezuela were attacked, it would ignite a single unified voice of resistance from all of Latin America and the Caribbean, a prolonged popular uprising of solidarity.
03:37Popular and prolonged.
03:40President Gustavo Petro congratulated the Venezuelan Armed Forces for their work in the fight against drug trafficking.
03:47The President highlighted recent operations that led to the destruction of camps linked to criminal networks in border areas and proposed coordinating joint actions between the two countries to combat the mafias operating in the region.
03:58In this regard, Petro pointed out that this type of cooperation is more effective than any external intervention and warned of the presence of a multinational drug trafficking structure operating in Catatumbo in southern Colombia.
04:09The President's statements came after the National Bolivarian Armed Forces reported the destruction of three logistical camps related to drug trafficking in the Amazonas and Apura states.
04:18In the hills of Baruta, a few kilometers from Caracas, Venezuela, the Ramos family has been running a farm for over 25 years to generate a self-serving plant.
04:20In the hills of Baruta, a few kilometers from Caracas, Venezuela, the Ramos family has been running a farm for over 25 years to generate a self-sufficient economy.
04:48A correspondent, Álvaro Fraga has all the details.
04:52It all started with a dream and a few seeds.
04:55Joel picked up the torch from his father, who founded this farm with his own hands.
05:00Among the hills and rains of Ollo de la Puerta, he has been bringing plants to transform a barren plot of land into a productive space.
05:07Well, cacao, I started bringing Persian limes, mandarins, other fruits that I didn't have here, pumagas, yes, many varieties of plants.
05:24But the biggest challenge wasn't planting. It was getting there. For an entire year, Joel carved the road with a pig and a shovel to connect his farm to the community.
05:34A road that today serves his children, his neighbors and other farmers.
05:38Roads. Many say that when I talk to them about roads, here and there, when I look out, they say, no, you're crazy. You don't believe it. I don't believe you're going to put the road there.
05:50His cousin Ignacio works the land. He tells us that medicinal plants and anti-inflammatory plants like broadleaf and spices grow in the soil.
05:59But not everyone can identify them. They are part of the wisdoms of the farmers.
06:05This is wild coriander, OK? And this is the broadleaf plant.
06:10A, it's very similar to the seasoning of common coriander that they sell in the markets.
06:16But actually, for me, in my opinion, this is the one that gives the final touch to any meal.
06:25Joel Farms operates on a self-sufficient basis. The family lives off what they grow and sells the surplus to neighbors.
06:32When production exceeds local demand, they take it to the coche market in Caracas.
06:38And partly, when I have no way to sell it to the community because the community don't buy every day, I have someone to take it to the market.
06:47The residents value the proximity and the quality of the products.
06:51Well, I have bought avocados, I bought bananas, I bought scallions, coriander, and lettuce that he planted a while ago, and other little things like that, black beans, corn, and it's been great.
07:09Really great, delicious. Everything I've bought from him is great.
07:16Now Eber continues the work of representing the virtues of the countryside versus the city.
07:22Well, I could say proud, proud, because very few people dedicate themselves to this, to agriculture, which is not easy.
07:31However, I had the advantage of having a father who likes agriculture, and of growing up in an environment where everything is nature.
07:39Eber's motivation and his commitment to the environment are a guarantee for the future of this farm and the community.
07:46I do see a future for it. I do see a future for it. It just needs more time put into it, more time, but 400, 500 avocado trees, 400 orange trees, 400 lemon trees, when you see it, yes, there is a future.

08:27Welcome back.
08:28In Bolivia, the National Institute of Agrarian Reform reported that it managed to clean up 94% of the agrarian property, including the titling of millions of hectares for indigenous peoples and women, sectors that were not considered landowners before this process.
08:42A correspondent, Frey Morales, has the details.
08:45The National Institute for Agrarian Reform announced that it has practically completed the agrarian reform process in this country, having granted title to 94% of agricultural land and indigenous territories.
09:0094% of rural land in our country already has title deeds and the remaining 6% is in some stage of the process, meaning that the agrarian reform process is almost complete.
09:16The land title process began with the agrarian reform of 1953, and, as was to be expected, given the interests at stake, it encountered many obstacles.
09:30The last and most obvious obstacle was the boycott by the legislative majority of President Luis Arce's government, which froze external loans, including one of $45 million from the ING, to complete the titling process.
09:45Unfortunately, in this bicentennial year, we had to conclude in 18 months with a legislative assembly that really undermined governance, and it was a shame not to reach agreement on such an important loan that had been meticulously planned to conclude in this bicentennial year.
10:06The most recent effort to reclaim land was made by the left-wing government of the movement towards socialism, beginning in 2006, and it has finally been announced that the goal is close to being achieved.
10:24Indigenous peoples, especially those in the lowlands who did not own a hectare of land, now have more than 13 million on paper, and the total result is around 25 million Indigenous peoples in the highlands and lowlands of the country who not only own the land, but also the territory, a fact that expresses and recognizes the pluronationality of our state.
10:47The second fact is the inclusion of women in land titles.
10:55According to official data, 45% of the property titles issued by the Agrarian Reform Institute favor women, who prior to this process were openly marginalized from land ownership.
11:08Land titling resolves property conflicts, overlaps, encroachments, defines boundaries, and provides legal certainty.
11:18Clearly shows that on titled properties there is greater investment, greater diversification, greater gross income, and greater benefits for families.
11:28Every time we go to forums in other places, we show the data from Bolivia, and look, it has been true.
11:38You do all this work for so long and there is an effect. The country grows, the country progresses, and we have greater certainty.
11:44There is greater investment in agricultural activities.
11:4794% of titled land means 100 million hectares. The government had set itself the goal of reaching the bicentennial of the country's founding, celebrated on August 6th, with 100% of the land titled and cleared, but this was prevented by the legislative boycott of a $45 million loan.

12:25In other topics, in the United States, Democrat Sohran Mamdani has been elected as the mayor of New York City.
12:30In this context, the first results and projections suggest a poor electoral night for Donald Trump.
12:35The Democratic candidate's victory is a direct blow to the policies of the Republican far right and for President Donald Trump and his allies.
12:41After this victory, Mamdani guarantees free transport and childcare amid the high cost of living as well as showing his support for the Palestinian cause.
12:50Going to the Associated Press survey, Mamdani won the elections with 50.6% of the votes against the other candidates.
12:56Former Democrat Governor of New York State and now independent contender Andrew Cuomo left behind with 1.3% of Republican candidate and founder of the Garden Angel Citizens Crime Patrol Group, Curtis DeWa, with 7.4% of the votes.
13:08For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands.
13:23Fingers bruised from lifting boxes on the warehouse floor, palms calloused from delivery bike handlebars, knuckles scarred with kitchen burns.
13:37These are not hands that have been allowed to hold power.
13:40And yet, over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater.
13:47Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it.
14:00The future is in our hands.
14:06My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.
14:13In this regard, Democrat Abigail Spanberger won Tuesday the gubernatorial election in the state of Virginia, while Democrat Mickey Sherrill won in New Jersey.
14:23Former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Early Sears, who was outraged by the Democrat and did not receive the direct endorsement of President Donald Trump.
14:35At the same time, Mickey Sherrill, the new mayor of New Jersey, defeated Jack Seattle-Lely, who had the support of President Trump and demonstrated the vulnerabilities of the Republicans in their campaign planning.
14:45The victories of the female candidates represent a landslide victory against the Republican Party and the political hegemony of the United States' far right.
14:52When you gave my father the opportunity to...
14:56In this context, Republicans suffered another defeat in the state of California, where Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal to redistribute districts was approved with almost 65 percent of the vote.
15:06According to projections, more than four and a half million people supported the initiative, which would allow the state's electoral districts to be redesigned.
15:13The change could benefit the Democratic Party with up to five additional seats amid a close political race with Republicans.
15:19Governor Gavin Newsom, one of the regional leaders most attacked by the White House, presented this proposal as a tool to protect democracy.
15:26With approval in California and reforms being promoted in Texas, various states could initiate new district redistribution processes before the 2030 census.
15:42And on Wednesday, the U.S. government shutdown reached its 36th state, becoming the longest in the country's history.
15:47The situation has affected the lives of millions of citizens due to cuts in federal programs and non-payment to government workers.
15:54The White House continues to emphasize the responsibility of Democratic legislators for refusing to accept the spending reforms and restrictions that the Republican bench is trying to impose.
16:05In contrast, many analysts claim that the ruling party is making private gains thanks to the shutdown.
16:10Recently, President Trump called Republicans to end the filibuster rule, a parliamentary tactic used by some legislators to block or delay the passage of a bill.

16:53Security is sustained through justice, development, and respect for life, not through war, declared President Claudia Sheinbaum as she announced a new strategy to bring peace and justice to the people of Michoacan in the southwestern regions of the country.
17:06Her statement follows the assassination of Urwapan's mayor by organized crime groups.
17:10President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the Michoacan Plan for Peace and Justice to address the security crisis affecting the state in response to the violence perpetrated by organized crime groups.
17:27We act with responsibility, with justice, and with respect for the people.
17:37That is why today I announced the Michoacan Plan for Peace and Justice, an integrated
17:41strategy rooted in a deep conviction that security is not sustained through war, but
17:45through justice, development, and respect for life.
17:51Sheinbaum explained that this plan will be built with the participation of all social
17:59sectors and will not involve a military deployment, as was the case during the neoliberal period.
18:09This plan, in order not to be imposed from the top down, seeks to be enriched by the voices
18:14of indigenous communities, of women, of young people, of municipal and state authorities,
18:19of rural workers, of victims, and of families who, despite their pain, continue to believe
18:25in justice and the common good.
18:33The president pledged to present the plan in detail next week.
18:40Throughout this week, we will listen to communities, traditional authorities, churches, and the productive
18:45and social sectors to strengthen the plan with their perspectives and experiences, so it
18:50can be presented in the coming days.
18:57President Sheinbaum faces a climate of violence in Michoacan, a legacy of the failed militarization
19:02experiments during the neoliberal administrations of former presidents Philippe Calder and Enrique
19:08KPE Anito, according to this investigative journalist.
19:15It stems from a poorly implemented security strategy dating back to the launch of the joint
19:20Michoacan operation, in 2006.
19:23The arrival of Philippe Calder and to the presidency is not necessarily a consequence in that sense,
19:29but it marked the beginning of a security approach that has failed an approach with various nuances,
19:35carried out in different ways, and whose long-term consequences we are now witnessing.
19:44The main challenge of the plan to bring peace to Michoacan is to overcome decades of impunity.
19:55I believe impunity is the first and foremost issue in Michoacan as long as there are no consequences
20:00for any crime homicide, extortion, kidnapping, all the offenses we've seen grow and explode
20:06in recent years no strategy will work.
20:09No, no, no van a funcionar las estrategias.
20:14Grecia Quiroz, viuda de Carlos Manzo,
20:16Grecia Quiroz, widow of Carlos Manzo, called on society to demonstrate peacefully,
20:22and urged that the pain of the Michoacan people not be exploited for political gain.
20:27I ask the citizens who are demonstrating in certain areas of Uraappen,
20:34and engaging in acts of vandalism to please do so peacefully,
20:40because we know that many groups will try to take advantage of this situation.
20:48Grecia Quiroz, viuda de Carlos Manzo,
20:54Grecia Quiroz will assume office in the coming days as mayor of Uraappen,
20:58and she has pledged to continue the fight against insecurity in the municipality.
21:03Antonio Aranda, Tele Sur, Ciudad de México.
21:07In Palestine, the United Nations World Food Programme called for opening more crossings to deliver much-needed aid into the Gaza Strip.
21:34According to the WFP, since the first phase of the Gaza Seasfire Agreement on October 10th,
21:39it has distributed food parcels to approximately one million people in the Gaza Strip.
21:43However, due to limited supplies, each household can only receive only one food parcel, sufficient for ten days only.
21:49WFP emphasized that food supplies in the Gaza Strip remain far below targets,
21:54particularly in northern Gaza, where delivery challenges are greater.
21:58Since the Seasfire went into force, the WFP has transformed approximately 20,000 tons of food aid into the Gaza Strip,
22:04which is less than half of its monthly target, according to the organization.
22:08In Haiti, the number of victims from Hurricane Melissa continues to rise,
22:27as authorities confirmed 43 dead and 13 missing after the storm hit the southwest of the country.
22:32Rescue teams continue to work in the most affected areas by floods and landslides that devastated more than 30 communities.
22:39Nearly 12,000 homes were flooded and 200 were destroyed, while more than 1,700 people remained in temporary shelters.
22:45The government warned of drinking water shortages and implemented emergency measures to prevent outbreaks of cholera and other diseases,
22:52and also announced agricultural support with seeds and tools for farmers affected by the losses.
23:05And on Tuesday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel returned to the eastern provinces of the country to assess the critical situation left by Hurricane Melissa.
23:12The President began his visit to grandma, where he saw that severe flooding has forced the evacuation of more than 14,400 residents.
23:20In community such as El Recreo, residents told him about the total loss of essential crops such as chilies, corn and sweet potatoes,
23:28which are the livelihood of many families.
23:30In this scenario, President Diaz-Canel expressed interest in the care of the evacuees and emphasized the importance of updating disaster plans
23:36and ensuring that protocols are followed to guarantee the quality of water and food before they return to their homes.
23:42At the end of his visit, the head of state conveyed a message of commitment,
23:45assuring that no one in Cuba will be left without help.
23:50And on Wednesday, the member states of the European Union reached a political agreement to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 90 percent by 2040.
24:03The agreement was approved by a qualified majority with the opposition of the governments of Slovakia, Hungary and Poland.
24:09The agreement includes measures that offer greater flexibility to member states allowing up to 10 percent of the reduction to be achieved through the purchase of emission rights and national funds.
24:19It is important to note that this legal framework will serve as the basis for future regulations in key sectors such as industry, transport and agriculture.
24:27It also sets out a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
24:32And at this we have come to the end of this news brief.
