Trump sparks controversy: Pakistan, China, and Russia accused of secret nuclear tests | Watch as he defends US nuclear testing plans in exclusive CBS News 60 Minutes interview #globalinsights #trump #internationalnews #russia #china #pakistan #northkorea
00:00Senior Pakistani official has responded to recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding nuclear weapons testing.
00:08In an interview with CBS News 60 Minutes, Mr. Trump alleged that Pakistan, along with Russia and China, had conducted secret nuclear tests.
00:17Pakistan, however, is firmly denying those claims.
00:21A senior Pakistani security official told CBS News that Pakistan was not the first nation to conduct nuclear tests, and it will not be the first nation to resume nuclear tests.
00:32The official emphasized that Islamabad continues to uphold its long-standing moratorium on nuclear testing, a policy it has maintained since its last nuclear detonation in 1998.
00:43President Trump made his remarks during a recent 60 Minutes interview with CBS's Norah O'Donnell, saying,
00:50China and Russia are testing, but neither one talks about it.
00:54We're going to test because they test and others test.
00:57North Korea's been testing.
00:59Pakistan's been testing.
01:01But just days before that interview aired, Trump's own nominee to lead the U.S. strategic command,
01:06the military branch responsible for America's nuclear arsenal,
01:10testified before Congress that neither China nor Russia is conducting nuclear explosive tests.
01:16In fact, North Korea remains the only nation known to have carried out an actual nuclear detonation since the 1990s.
01:23China's last confirmed test was in 1996, Pakistan's in 1998 since then.
01:30Pakistan says it has observed a
01:32Unilateral Moratorium on Nuclear Testing, even though it has not signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty or CTBT which bans all atomic test explosions.
01:42The CTBT has been signed by nearly 180 countries, but like Pakistan and China, the United States has never ratified it.
01:50Russian President Vladimir Putin formally withdrew Moscow's ratification in 2023,
01:56though Russia has not announced any plans to resume nuclear detonations.
02:00On its official website, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that despite being a non-signatory,
02:07Pakistan has been supporting the objectives and purposes of the treaty,
02:11and that it will not be the first to resume testing of nuclear weapons in South Asia.
02:17China also pushed back against Trump's allegations.
02:20Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing
02:23has always upheld a self-defense nuclear strategy and abided by its commitment to suspend nuclear testing.
02:30She urged the United States to
02:32take concrete actions to maintain global strategic stability.
02:36There's been no immediate response from Moscow regarding Trump's comments.
02:41Meanwhile, questions remain about what exactly Mr. Trump meant when he spoke of the United States resuming nuclear testing.
02:48Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified over the weekend that any upcoming U.S. tests would be non-nuclear system tests,
02:55designed to evaluate the delivery systems, not the detonation of actual nuclear devices.
03:01For now, Pakistan insists its nuclear moratorium stands and says it will not be the first to break it.
03:08There's been an issue here in the end of the war.
