00:00Fetterman Comments on Ending Shutdown During CNN Interview
00:04Senator John Fetterman made headlines Sunday after urging Democrats to
00:08own the shutdown as the federal government entered its second month of closure.
00:14Appearing on CNN's State of the Union with Jake Tapper,
00:16Fetterman's blunt comments stood out amid growing frustration over the stalled funding negotiations.
00:22Tapper pressed Fetterman about the expiration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,
00:27which officially ran out of funds on November 1st.
00:30The lapse leaves 42 million Americans, including about 2 million Pennsylvanians,
00:35without food stamp benefits.
00:38When asked who was to blame, Fetterman said,
00:40I feel like the Democrats really need to own the shutdown.
00:43I mean, we're shutting it down, he said.
00:46While the White House has blamed the Donald Trump administration for not releasing contingency funds,
00:51Democrats have also faced criticism for refusing to compromise on expanded tax credits.
00:57and social spending priorities.
00:59Fetterman said he supported those policies, but added,
01:02I refuse to put 42 million Americans in the kinds of food insecurity,
01:07adding that the easiest fix is to reopen the government.
01:10The shutdown began over disputes about spending and tax credits,
01:13and has dragged well into November with no resolution in sight.
01:17Republicans are pushing for budget cuts and reduced federal spending,
01:20while Democrats want to expand programs such as child tax credits.
01:24Fetterman also noted the broader effects of the shutdown,
01:27citing airline and union concerns about safety and worker strain.
01:32Do we really want to make flying less safe by forcing this kind of situation
01:36and making things that much more stressed?
01:39He asked.
01:40Known for his unorthodox independence,
01:42Fetterman's remarks could pressure Senate Democrats to seek a deal.
01:46Meanwhile, President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance
01:49have stayed quiet as negotiations continue behind closed doors.
01:54Whether Fetterman's candor accelerates progress or deepens division remains to be seen.
