00:00During the post-production of the film The Flash, Ezra Miller thought it would be a good idea to travel the world and assault people for no reason.
00:07As a result, he was arrested in Hawaii after insulting and spitting in a man's face in a bar.
00:11and didn't forget to snatch the microphone from a woman who was doing a quiet karaoke session.
00:14Later, on the same island, he went to threaten a couple in their room and stole their passport.
00:18Then, in Iceland, he tried to strangle a woman.
00:21In Vermont, USA, he broke into a house and stole alcohol.
00:25And he got into fights in several bars in Ireland.
00:27In short, a guy who wasn't exactly mentally stable, who nevertheless displayed a lot of gratuitous violence.
00:31and who pleaded insanity on the Internet under pressure from Warner because the guy was starring in a $200 million movie.
00:37A film that the studio hesitated to cancel for a long time before finally releasing it, even inviting the actor to the premiere, as if nothing had happened.
00:43A film which, as you can now imagine, had major production problems.
00:47Change of director, creative differences, rewrite of the script after Gunn and Safran took over at DC Studios,
00:53not to mention the problems inherent in the work, particularly in its post-production and visual effects.
00:57Because I don't know if you've seen The Flash, but visually it's like a PS2 cinematic.
01:02And that's quite disturbing for a film available in 4K.
01:04We've gone visually from Snyder's Man of Steel to the Flash series in the Arrowverse.
01:08The director attempted to justify this aesthetic as a stylistic choice.
01:12aiming to reflect Barry's altered perception of reality when using his super speed.
01:17But that seems unconvincing to me.
01:18It feels more like a technical weakness than a deliberate artistic gesture.
01:22However, there are some interesting visuals.
01:24Batman in Russia, now that's classy.
01:26And the effect when it passes through walls is pretty cool.
01:28But overall, the film is ugly.
01:29I'm so tired of the fake exterior sets, I'm sorry.
01:32It's ugly and you can tell it's fake.
01:34I mean, go filming in the street, damn it!
01:36Man of Steel was very often filmed on location.
01:39And the difference in colours and depth of field is like night and day.
01:43Zod's head too, it's like night and day.
01:45The modeling of the actors was also a point of contention related to the film, whether they were alive or dead.
01:49The appearance of Christopher Reeves, like that of Tarkins in Rogue One, can quickly seem out of place and raises some rather interesting questions about the future of cinema and the role of actors and actresses to play in the future.
01:59Because while Reeves' Superman is ugly, Tarkins is still quite impressive.
02:03The film, however, will attempt to develop a fairly universal theme.
02:06Barry's grief, unable to accept reality, leads him to try and change his destiny by going back in time.
02:12without realizing that his actions will have serious consequences and that what is done must not be undone.
02:17Let's just say that this aspect of the story manages to make the film palatable.
02:20Even so, time travel movies are always a risky business.
02:22Because yes, The Flash, like most DCU films, tries to ride the current trend and copy the neighbor.
02:28Time travel with Avengers Endgame and the multiverse plus the return of old heroes with Spider-Man No Way Home.
02:34Nostalgia is at the heart of the film, just as it is at the heart of everything that has governed our consumer society for the last 10 years.
02:39Cinema, clothing, automobiles, music.
02:42And The Flash will happily unpack the Warner catalogue and throw in references that are obscure to many.
02:48by inspiring Tim Burton's Superman, in particular.
02:50Speaking of Tim Burton, let's talk about Batman.
02:52Michael Keaton is one of the highlights of the film.
02:54His return as Bruce Wayne brings a certain gravity and a kind of credibility to the work.
02:59He steals the spotlight from the hero of his own film, in a way.
03:01And we're going to have cameos in every direction.
03:03From Schumacher's Bruce Wayne to Jimmy Lannister, and including the members of the Justice League,
03:08which leads me to believe that this is indeed the last film in the DCU, because unlike Blue Beetle,
03:12which I won't even mention because I have no energy left, and Aquaman 2,
03:16The Flash fully embraces the legacy of the DCU.
03:18And as an admission of total failure by the studio, it capitalizes on nostalgia for Snyder's films.
03:22formerly vilified by Warner, but now promoted as a guarantee of quality.
03:26The Flash movie was a huge box office flop, as usual.
03:29A universe was born that could have been extraordinary for comic book fans worldwide.
03:33And for us, film fans of course,
03:35but which ultimately proves to be a huge waste, due to a clear lack of vision.
03:38due to an excess of controversy and a disinterest in cinemas in favor of streaming,
03:42and of endless greed.
03:43It's a shame, because unlike Marvel, which tried to tell the stories of ordinary people,
03:47having to adapt to extraordinary gifts,
03:49DCU and Snyder cleverly decided that it was better to tell the story of immortals,
03:53of gods, trying to retain their share of humanity and normality in this ordinary world.
03:57The counterpoint was perfect, but people who go to the cinema twice a year didn't want to see that.
04:01They wanted something lighthearted, and Warner Bros. responded to their request.
04:04by poaching artists from the competition, in order to grab a nice slice of the pie.
04:08But that wasn't enough, and I wonder if today, in 2025,
04:12It's really relevant to relaunch an expanded universe.
04:15Viewers are becoming increasingly disinterested in superhero movies.
04:18We force-fed them for years, and now it's an overdose.
04:21Even Marvel is no longer able to sell enough movie tickets.
04:23I don't think James Gunn is the miracle solution.
04:26And I don't think his style fits with all the characters in the DC universe.
04:30The first images of Superman tend to prove me right.
04:32It's visually very limited, bland, and looks super cheesy.
04:36Maybe it will be great, maybe not.
04:39But in any case, I don't think this new DC Universe is viable in the long run.
04:43Cinema is a cycle, and just as the peplum or the western have their time,
04:46The superhero film is destined to disappear one day.
