00:00After the ectoplasmic events in Oklahoma, the Spengler family decides to move into the old Ghostbusters HQ in New York and become full-time ghost hunters.
00:08Their activity will create tensions within the family, especially Phoebe, considered too young and excluded from the group, who will become friends with a ghost.
00:15The authorities also view this reformation with suspicion and are trying to dissolve the organization as a glacial threat prepares to hit New York head-on.
00:23Finally, with full force, or rather a quarter of a whip I would say, but we'll come back to that.
00:26To be honest, I preferred this installment to the previous one. I find it much better paced, funnier, with a surprisingly well-done antagonist, at least visually, and a rather welcome return to New York, because if you're going to do fanservice, you might as well go all the way.
00:39The story of friendship between Phoebe and this teenager is rather refreshing, no pun intended, although it is ultra predictable.
00:46But the story attempts to create a kind of mythology around its antagonist, with artifacts here and there and a rather surprising animated scene in a good way.
00:54In short, it's enjoyable to watch. Strangely, I find that the film suffers less from its heritage and fanservice.
00:59But let's not kid ourselves, it remains extremely flat, without real ambition, and above all, it lacks inspiration.
01:04The potential is there to offer a real moment of fear with this ice threat that paralyzes New York, but the city is not used to its full potential, and the population is relegated to the background.
01:13This means that the threat is no longer so much of a threat in the eyes of the viewer.
01:16To make a comparison, the final battle of the first Avengers is far more impactful than the battle of Avengers: Endgame.
01:22Because the city's inhabitants were physically involved, and the chaos was felt through that.
01:26In this latest installment of SOS Phantom, the climax, lasting only 20 minutes, is not enough to establish a real dramatic structure.
01:32Everything takes place in a small, enclosed hall, and that detracts a lot from the scene.
01:36At the end of all this, it seems that there are no consequences to regret.
01:39No worries, no deaths, no injuries, nothing.
01:41But beyond that, no character shines in this film, apart from Phoebe, because there are too many characters.
01:46The old cast really has no business being there anymore, and breaks the dynamic of a group that was already not very cohesive.
01:51So we have a collection of main characters, and none of them manages to stand out.
01:55Whereas, in fact, the strength of the first film lies in the unity of an inseparable group, where everyone has their place.
02:01In short, this fifth film in the franchise proves that SOS Phantom should remain a fond memory of a bygone era.
02:06But ultimately, it's not me who decides, it's the money, so it's not impossible that the Ghostbusters will reappear on the big screen.
02:12even via streaming, because now, where SOS Phantom goes, cinema dies.
