00:00Child rights activist Hartini Zahinduddin has said that failure to sign an international convention
00:06has hampered efforts to solve cases of children in custody disputes being taken across borders.
00:13She said children were left unprotected because custody disputes involving abductions
00:17were often dismissed in Malaysia as domestic matters.
00:21Malaysia's dual court system has also led to confusion and custody orders not being enforced,
00:26as while one parent may be granted custody by a civil court,
00:30the other may get a conflicting order from a Shahriya court.
00:34Hartini was commenting on the case of Singaporean mother Dailene Limonte Alvarez,
00:39who claims her seven-year-old son was abducted by his father and taken to Malaysia.
00:44She had been granted sole custody of the child by the Shahriya courts in both Singapore and Johor Bahru,
00:49but his father Luqman Liang Sien Masud allegedly took him to Johor Bahru in May 2024.
00:54Meanwhile, Suhakam, the Human Rights Commission, has said it is open to discussing the case
01:00with the Attorney General's chambers to immediately have the child brought before a children's court.
