00:00The U.S. ambassador to Malaysia has described recent protests held outside the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur

00:07as a commitment to freedom of expression and in line with American values on free speech.

00:12The protests, held in support of the Palestinian cause and to oppose the appointment of pro-Israel commentator Nick Adam as the incoming envoy,

00:20was timed to coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump's recent visit to Kuala Lumpur for the 47th ASEAN Summit.

00:26In an interview with FMT, Ambassador Edgar Kagan said it was ironic that political leaders who previously opposed demonstrations

00:35appear to have changed their tune.

00:38I find it quite interesting that some of the people who, when they were in power,

00:43didn't think demonstrations and free expression were quite so good, now are very much in favour of it.

00:48And as the Ambassador of the United States, I just want to say we accept your apology.

00:52Kagan did not name anyone in his remark.

00:54However, former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, who previously expressed disdain for such protests,

01:01had in 2016 urged the people to take to the streets to demand the resignation of then-Prime Minister Najib Razak.

01:08In July this year, Mahathir took part in a rally calling for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to step down.

01:13At the height of the reformasi movement in 1998, Mahathir criticised then-U.S. Vice President Al Gore

01:19for publicly supporting demonstrations held to protest Anwar Ibrahim's sacking from his post of Deputy Prime Minister.
