00:00Sarawak DAP's ambitious target of contesting up to 18 seats in the next state election is likely based on its confidence in pushing a stronger check-and-balance narrative to woo voters, says an analyst.
00:14Dik Lembang Dugun of University Malaysia-Sarawak said this is despite the party being in the unity government at the federal level.
00:22Sarawak has only two DAP elected representatives in the 82-seat assembly, State DAP Chief Chong Jianjian for Padungan and Violet Yong for Pending, but Chong indicated recently that the party could field candidates in 15 to 18 seats in the next state election.
00:39Asmi Hassan of Academy Nusantara also said, Sarawak DAP was positioning itself as a stronger opposition voice as it was not likely to join the state government, given Gabungan Party Sarawak's image as a purely Sarawak-based coalition.
00:55Awang Azman Awang Pawi of University Malaya said, Sarawak DAP is expected to target mixed seats with Chinese and Bumi Putra voters, particularly the Bidayuh and Iban, adding that DAP is likely to woo the Bidayuh with urban economic issues, such as the cost of living, jobs and housing.
