00:00I remember begging people to keep me where I could barely talk.
00:04I lost part of my lung capacity.
00:07I mean, I thought I was a goner.
00:08A week after my 22nd birthday, I went to a little get-together
00:12and I was hanging out with my friends at a house I'd never been to.
00:17I got up from the deck where we were all talking and I dove in the pool.
00:22That one quick dive ended up permanently changing her life.
00:26I had had a couple drinks, so I was feeling confident
00:28in my diving abilities.
00:30But this is probably the 10th time I've dove in my life.
00:33I never, ever dived.
00:35I'm usually scared of it.
00:36And I felt a pop in my neck and a dull pain shot through my body.
00:42She suddenly realized how much danger she was in,
00:45but there was nothing she could do.
00:47But I was kind of distracted by the fact that I was floating at the top,
00:51face down, and I couldn't move.
00:53I couldn't turn my body.
00:55I couldn't turn my head.
00:56I was face down in the water, fully aware, not able to breathe.
01:00So I just hunkered down and held my breath.
01:03There was nothing she could do to help herself.
01:05I sat there for like 30 seconds.
01:07And for the last 10 seconds, I mean, I thought I was a goner.
01:10I just remember thinking, I'm not ready.
01:14Luckily, someone noticed what was happening and jumped in to try and help her.
01:18I felt someone kind of grab my arm, and I was praying that they would put me over.
01:21And they turned me over, and I was like,
01:23and I was breathing, and I was alive, and I was so happy.
01:27And they pulled me over to the side of the pool, and they're like, what happened?
01:30Once she was safe, the severity of her injuries started to become apparent.
01:34Do you feel this?
01:35No.
01:36Do you feel this?
01:37No.
01:38Do you feel this?
01:39No.
01:40Everyone got quiet, because we all kind of realized in that moment what I had done.
01:45That's when I started crying.
01:46The group began to panic, but fortunately, help was closer than they thought.
01:52They called 911, and they called their neighbor, who happened to be a neurosurgeon.
01:57She came and stabilized my neck.
01:59She called my mom.
02:00I got in the ambulance, got to the ER.
02:02My trauma in the neck was making my jaw shake, and I remember I could barely talk.
02:07My breathing started to slow and getting really heavy because I lost part of my lung capacity.
02:13My lungs were starting to fail.
02:14The surgery that I had was to fuse my C6 to my C4, because I broke my C5.
02:23I put a net around C6 and C4 and fused it to stabilize it.
02:26I had a C collar when I woke up, and I was in excruciating pain.
02:31I was on so many pain meds and sedatives, it didn't help anything.
02:36Her 21 long, uncertain days in ICU will stay with her for the rest of her life.
02:42I developed a stage 4 pressure wound.
02:44I got pressure on my tailbone, my sacrum.
02:47The blood wasn't there for so long that it went down to the bone.
02:50I remember begging people to kill me because I was just in so much pain.
02:55It was hard and miserable and scary and lonely.
02:59My brain blocked out some stuff.
