Illinois Speed Press — The Illinois Speed Press 1969 (USA, Heavy Psychedelic, Blues Rock)
The Chicago quintet Illinois Speed Press was formed in February 1968. Originally formed by guitarist Paul Cotton and renowned Chicago blues musician Kal David back in 1965, under the name "The Rovin' Kind," they were the house band at Chicago's Whisky-A-Go-Go until they were spotted by renowned producer James William Guercio. He convinced them to change their name to Illinois Speed Press, helped them secure a contract with major label CBS/Columbia Records, and encouraged them to move to Los Angeles, where they also became regulars at the local Whisky-A-Go-Go. The band's first album enjoyed moderate commercial success, reaching #144 on the Album Charts in 1969. Their second album, "Duet," released in 1970, failed to consolidate their success, and the band broke up a few months later. Paul Cotton joined Poco, Kal David formed The Fabulous Rhinestones, and Fred Page moved to California and played in various bands.
