00:00The vicious fighting in Sudan has taken a new, disturbing turn.
00:07This week, the Sudanese Armed Forces lost control of a key province to a rival paramilitary group,
00:13as reports of harrowing atrocities continue to emerge.
00:16The vicious fighting, which has been raging for over 30 months,
00:20has left over 40,000 people dead, bringing about claims of genocide,
00:24and 14 million more displaced.
00:27The result is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
00:30Here's everything you need to know.
00:32The conflict in Sudan is between two main forces,
00:35the Sudanese Military and the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF.
00:40The RSF is a paramilitary group, an unofficial army,
00:43which operates outside a country's legitimate military,
00:46but oftentimes uses similar training, tactics, and equipment.
00:50This week, the RSF completed its 18-month siege of the provincial capital of El-Fashur.
00:55The military's last stronghold in Sudan's Darfur region.
00:59Harrowing videos have since flooded social media,
01:02purporting to show RSF troops killing and beating citizens attempting to flee El-Fashur.
01:07According to the UN Sudan coordinator,
01:09it received credible reports of sexual violence towards women and young girls,
01:13as well as summary executions, which are extrajudicial killings that occur without a proper legal trial.
01:18Suspicions of executions further grew after chilling satellite images emerged,
01:22showing large patches of discolored ground around clustered objects.
01:26At an El-Fashur hospital, over 400 people were reportedly killed.
01:30The governor of Darfur shared a video that purports to show RSF fighters roaming the hospital as bodies lay on the floor.
01:37The Sudanese military and the RSF had previously worked together in staging a coup in Sudan in 2021,
01:44taking control of the country.
01:46However, the leaders of the two groups,
01:48General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan of the Armed Forces
01:51and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalow of the RSF,
01:54had stark disagreements about the new direction of the country.
01:58The tensions culminated in April of 2023,
02:01when violence between the two groups erupted in the capital city of Khartoum
02:05after RSF troops were deployed around the country.
02:08In the two and a half years of subsequent fighting,
02:10the two groups have been warring to take control over capital cities and provinces,
02:14leaving thousands dead, millions displaced,
02:17and parts of the country plunged into famine.
02:20The RSF has been accused of committing heinous atrocities,
02:23such as ethnic cleansing of the ethnically mixed region of Darfur
02:26to build an Arab-ruled domain.
02:29In one of the Biden administration's last acts,
02:31former Secretary of State Anthony Blinken released a statement
02:35accusing the RSF of committing genocide.
02:38The RSF and allied militias have systematically murdered men and boys,
02:43even infants, on an ethnic basis,
02:45and deliberately targeted women and girls from certain ethnic groups
02:48for rape and other forms of brutal sexual violence.
02:51Those same militias have targeted fleeing civilians,
02:54murdering innocent people escaping conflict,
02:57and prevented remaining civilians from accessing life-saving supplies.
03:02Based on this information,
03:03I have now concluded that members of the RSF and allied militias
03:06have committed genocide in Sudan, Blinken wrote.
03:09In a video statement released by Mohamed Hamdan Degallo
03:12following the capture of El Fasher,
03:14the RSF leader vowed to investigate any violations by his soldiers in the city.
03:19But now this is the view of the Fasher,
03:21the fact that the pattern continues in the moment
03:23is to come out soon.
03:25It's the fact that any citizen or a citizen
03:26or an advocate
03:29can take criminalodox or court
03:32can make防止 of their limits
03:33against any human being.
03:35Any human being is to come out soon
03:37will be able to do it before
03:39and the people will be part of the United States
03:41and will be part of the nation of Sudan
03:42but it is to come out soon.
03:43Over a decade ago, the nation of Sudan split into the countries of Sudan and South Sudan
03:50following a years-long civil war.
03:52As the region of Darfur falls into the hands of the RSF, fears are growing that Africa's
03:57third-largest nation will experience yet another split.
