00:00Welcome to the Bugatti Torbion VP Production. VP stands for Validation Prototype. In general,
00:24we have three big phases in development car. XP is Experimental Prototypes. That's the
00:29camouflage prototypes that you could see running around for the last couple of years.
00:33Now we are in the second phase, the VP phase, where the car needs to be 90-95% done. You can
00:39still do some small changes going forward, but that's basically it. That's the project. That's
00:44the status where we are now in. And then the next phase is the pre-serious phase where there are no
00:49more changes. So now we need to take all the learnings from XP and VP. But what we want to
00:56show you today is the powertrain system and dive deep into the hybrid and combustion engine of this car.
01:11Interesting story behind that is that the electric powertrain being very high-tech,
01:14very high-performance is actually enabling very emotional comb engine each other where the
01:19electric powertrain gives the low-end performance and fast response time and the 4L drive with the
01:24front electric axle and the combustion engine gives, of course, the longer-term performance
01:28and the emotions, the sound, the revs that we all rear power system.
01:40So consist of the V16 Aspirate engine speed double-clutch transmission with torque Trink E in
01:46and the rear one electric 250 kilowatts motor with 24,000 RPM maximum speed and this whole thing weighs 430 kilos.
01:58So in total the powertrain without the battery is quite a lot lighter compared to Theon of the engine
02:03and the gearbox of Theon.
02:05Electric motors are pretty incredible things.
02:10This little motor here can develop far over 300 horsepower and together with the gearbox it does a lot of things.
02:17So the way we reduced weight is by integration.
02:21For example, this is also the starter motor.
02:24So there is number 12 volt starter motor.
02:26We start the engine with 800 volts with this selective motor.
02:29It also acts as a generator.
02:33Let's say if the battery is depleted and you want to charge the battery not from the grid but from the engine,
02:38it acts as a generator while the car is either standing still or driving.
02:43And of course it supports the combustion engine whenever you drive.
02:48So, let's say, when you hit the throttle and you are at low RPM with a combustion engine in a combustion-only sports car,
02:54even if it's a very powerful car, you either need to wait a long time for the turbos to spool up,
03:00that can be a few seconds, even especially with a big engine,
03:03or you would need to shift down 2, 3, 4 gears to get into the rev range where the combustion engine can deliver its performance.
03:09With this electric motor, you don't need that,
03:25because this motor has a completely different core engine combined L-sit down.
03:29There is no turb.
03:44You get the performance immediately with the rarity of a V16-16 spray engine,
03:49and then in the front of the car, there is no more gearbox here in front of the engine.
03:53The gearbox is now behind, but now we have a battery here which is in a chopper.
04:08Years ago, we started development of the first hybrid power for the new year of Bugatti vehicles.
04:15The journey started from a blank sheet of paper.
04:17The development sets ambitious goals such as the highest level of integration inside the vehicles
04:25and the highest performance available on the market.
04:29We also adopt in this architecture a motorsport cooling concept with oil directly cooling the cells.
04:35This to maximize the performance.
04:39Here we have one of the first development prototypes of the battery.
04:43The battery design has this unique shape to achieve two main goals.
04:47One is to keep the center of gravity of the entire vehicle low.
04:52The second one is to announce the integration inside the monica.
04:56We used to call this chopper,
04:58but the main peculiarity of this architecture is the absence of a cover.
05:03One of the main goals of the project was to keep the weight as low as possible.
05:08So from there we started developing the idea of using the entire vehicle as a battery cover.
05:13The B architecture is based on 800 systems.
05:20We have more than 1500s allowing us to have an EV drive range of more than 60 kilometers
05:25and a total pickup of around 700 kilowatts.
05:28On this front panel, we can see how the battery looks like while installed inside the vehicle.
05:39So basically this panel is part of the vehicle itself while the battery is coming from underneath.
05:45And the connection for both the cooling channels where the oil flows,
05:48the electric voltage and other signals is happening blindly so through internal connection.
06:00And then the independent front electric axle.
06:03Here it looks like a differential housing or basically
06:06So we wanted to have the cooling for the hybrid system and the combustion engine in the front.
06:13We have more luggage space and we have electric front in the front.
06:20So that's a packaging marvel and that was really difficult to do.
