00:00Welcome to the video from the Auto Magazine Tuning Blog on the topic of the Mercedes-Benz EQS with
00:12Solid State Battery. As always, you can find the link to read the article in our magazine in the
00:18video description. Mercedes-Benz is setting new standards in electromobility and has launched
00:25the first passenger car with a lithium-metal solid-state battery on the road. The development
00:31is the result of a collaboration between the passenger car and motorsport engineers at Mercedes-Benz
00:36and the Battery Expert Factorial. Mercedes-Benz High Performance Powertrains HPP, a subsidiary of the
00:45Mercedes-Benz Group that transfers Formula One technology to high-performance vehicles, was
00:50particularly involved. The Mercedes-Benz Competence Center for Battery Systems has developed a
00:56completely new battery system that has been integrated into a vehicle for the first time.
01:01After extensive testing on test benches, the solid-state battery was installed in an EQS in 2024,
01:08which had been slightly modified for this technology. Initial laboratory tests were carried out in
01:14Stuttgart at the end of 2024, followed by road tests that began in February 2025. Marcus Schaefer,
01:21Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, emphasizes the significance of this progress.
01:28Testing a solid-state battery in a vehicle format is an important step towards potential series
01:33production. Solid-state batteries differ from conventional lithium-ion batteries in that
01:41they use a solid electrolyte. This increases the safety of the cells and enables the use of new
01:47anode materials such as lithium metal. These materials offer higher energy density and could
01:55increase the gravimetric energy density to up to 450 watt-hours per kilogram, which directly impacts the
02:01range of an electric vehicle. The technology also reduces battery weight, improves safety and enables more
02:10compact designs. A significant milestone for the entire automotive industry is the integration
02:16of a solid-state battery into an existing vehicle platform. According to Sewang, CEO of Factorial Energy,
02:25this is proof that this technology is not just a concept for the future, but has already arrived in
02:30real-world applications. Together with the motorsport experts from HPP, the Mercedes-Benz Competence Center
02:38for Battery Systems has developed an innovative battery design. The solid-state battery is equipped with a
02:45floating cell carrier, which has already been patented. During charging, the materials expand and during
02:53discharging, they contract. In order to control these volume changes, the battery has pneumatic actuators
03:01that react to them. This has a positive effect on the performance and service life of the battery.
03:09Compared to the standard battery of an EQS, the solid-state battery offers a range that is up to 25%
03:15longer without significantly changing the weight or size. Additional efficiency is achieved through passive
03:22battery cooling. Mercedes-Benz expects a range of over 1,000 kilometers for the development vehicle.
03:29By comparison, the IQS 450 Plus with a battery capacity of 118 kWh already achieves over 800 kilometers.
03:41In the coming months, Mercedes-Benz will intensively test the performance of the solid-state battery
03:46through further series of tests in the laboratory and on the road.
03:51The partnership with Factorial has existed since 2021 with the aim of developing a new generation of batteries.
03:59Factorial delivered lithium-metal solid-state cells to Mercedes-Benz in the summer of 2024,
04:05marking the first delivery of this kind to a global automobile manufacturer.
