00:05Today we're talking about Nissan's Evolver D-Research project,
00:09which marks a significant advance in the field of autonomous driving.
00:14Over 8 years, Nissan tested specially equipped Nissan LEA models on various roads in the UK
00:20to collect important data about the driving behavior of autonomous vehicles under real-world conditions.
00:25More than 25,000 kilometers were covered on motorways, in city centers, residential areas
00:33and on country roads. The aim was to optimize the driving behavior of the vehicles so that
00:39they can navigate safely and reliably in a wide variety of traffic situations.
00:45A central aspect of the project was the interaction between the vehicle and the infrastructure.
00:50With the help of existing video systems in residential areas, the vehicles were able
00:56to obtain additional information about their surroundings, which significantly improved their
01:00perception. This could help to make autonomous vehicles even safer and more responsive in the
01:07future. Narrow city streets with unpredictable traffic situations were particularly challenging.
01:13In residential areas, the autonomous systems had to react to playing children, cyclists or parked cars.
01:22On rural roads, on the other hand, precise detection of curves, missing lane markings and
01:27higher speeds was required. Nissan therefore worked on improved chassis control with optimized braking and
01:35steering mechanisms. Another challenge was communication between vehicles and other road users.
01:43Pedestrians and cyclists had to be able to recognize how the autonomous vehicle was behaving using light
01:49signals and predictive braking.
01:54The project was carried out with the support of the UK government.
01:59Nissan led the technical developments, while partners such as Connected Places Catapult created high-resolution maps
02:04from aerial imagery.
02:05Humanizing autonomy analyzed the behavior of pedestrians and cyclists.
02:12SBD Automotive provided cybersecurity solutions and TRL worked on the validation of autonomous systems.
02:20The UK's Intelligent Mobility Fund, endowed with a £100 million grant, played a key role in funding.
02:27Following the project's completion, Nissan will continue its research.
02:31Tests are underway at several locations, including the Nissan Technical Center Europe,
02:37the Nissan Research Center in Japan and the Nissan Advanced Technology Center in Silicon Valley.
02:44In Yokohama, the easy ride concept is also being tested, which is based on the Nissan Serena and
02:49represents an autonomous mobility solution for urban areas.
02:52The findings from Evoltan will help make autonomous driving safer and more suitable for everyday use in the coming years.
03:01However, regulatory questions remain unanswered.
03:06Nissan is now working with its partners to analyze what adjustments are necessary in the UK to integrate autonomous vehicles into road traffic.
03:13The project shows that autonomous driving is not only a technological challenge, but also requires social and infrastructural adjustments.
03:25Manufacturers such as Nissan, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and WMO are working intensively on corresponding systems.
03:31However, the road to full autonomy is still a long way off.
03:35If self-driving vehicles become marketable, they could revolutionize public transport and roads.
03:44At the same time, they could increase road safety, as human error would be eliminated as the main cause of accidents.
03:51However, there are also challenges.
03:54Massive investments in infrastructure and new legal regulations are necessary.
03:58There are also concerns about data protection and cyber security.
04:05Manufacturers must ensure that their systems are protected against hacker attacks and that the collected data is used responsibly.
04:13With the successful completion of Evolviad, Nissan has reached an important milestone.
04:19The test results provide valuable insights into how autonomous vehicles behave in complex traffic situations.
04:29The coming years will show how quickly this technology continues to develop and when the first fully autonomous vehicles will actually be on the roads.
