00:1118-year-old Tia Angel Cameron had been walking on the footpath during peak hour traffic when a Brisbane City Council bus mounted the curb, pinned her against the wall, killing Miss Cameron.
00:23Now, following a three-month investigation, the driver of that bus, Lindsay Francis Selby, was charged.
00:30He faced a one-day trial summary last month where the court was told he was an experienced driver with over 30 years of driving experience, tens of thousands of driving hours, and that he had been on a split shift that day and also suffered from multiple medical conditions.
00:47It was here this morning at Brisbane Magistrates Court that the 72-year-old heard his guilty verdict for one count of driving carelessly, causing death.
00:58In court, Miss Cameron's mother read out her victim impact statement through tears, saying the tragic and senseless death of her daughter had shattered her life, and that the tragedy serves as a reminder that the community's safety needs to be prioritised.
01:12Magistrate Aaron Simpson said, no matter what the sentence was that was bestowed on him, that Selby would live with the tragic outcome of that day for the rest of his life.
01:22Members of the Queensland Tram, Rail and Bus Union were also present in the courtroom today in support of Selby.
01:30Now, Selby has been handed an eight-month suspended sentence, meaning he can serve that in the community, provided he doesn't commit any further offences for the next 12 months.
01:40He's also had his licence, his driver's licence, disqualified.
