One student killed, others injured in bus rollover near Geelong

In another tragic incident in Victoria a young girl has died and at least ten students needed hospital treatment after a school bus rolled near Geelong this morning. Police are now investigating what caused the crash.

00:00The daily school bus run turned to a scene of horror.

00:06The first members on scene to come across a bus with one child deceased and multiple children is incredibly confronting.

00:13The bus was carrying 28 school students to Christian College in Geelong.

00:18Police say it rolled while turning onto the Hamilton Highway at Stonehaven just west of the city.

00:23It hit the barrier and flipped on its side.

00:26The female student died at the scene. A boy was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

00:31While about a dozen other students along with the 76 year old driver were taken to hospital by ambulance.

00:37Just this morning outside of Geelong a school bus carrying kids on their way to school has overturned.

00:42Our thoughts are with those kids, their families, the driver and the broader school community.

00:48A really confronting day for those kids going to school as they would normally do.

00:53I think that's a really challenging thing to deal with.

00:57Police set up road blocks closing the highway in both directions as the injured students were treated.

01:03Some parents turned up at the scene here.

01:05Obviously there were some incredibly distressed parents and quite rightly so.

01:09Other students were taken to University Hospital Geelong with minor injuries.

01:13As you would probably expect with a crash like this, lots of abrasions and bruises.

01:18The male driver from the Geelong suburb of Hamelin Heights was also briefly hospitalised.

01:23He's since been discharged and is assisting police.

01:27Christian College Geelong is an independent school with multiple campuses around the Geelong region.

01:32Its principal labelled the incident a profoundly distressing situation for the entire school community.

01:38Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families impacted.

01:42We are supporting them through this incredibly difficult time.

01:45Police have confirmed there were seatbelts on the bus.

01:48Whether they were being used will form part of the investigation.

01:51And they've been keen to highlight it's not just physical injuries that will have been sustained here today,

01:56but mental ones as well.
