00:00Police have some data! Stop!
00:02The driver's making off.
00:04Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:06Pull over in here now!
00:08Might be game on for some of it here.
00:10It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22Just have warning markers for the firearms.
00:25Vehicle's done!
00:27Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates...
00:37Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get here!
00:40You're doing it!
00:41Come out here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:46Police!
00:47With lives on the line...
00:48We're gonna need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:58For the traffic cops.
00:59We've flown 128.
01:00Eleven minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Suspicion and thefts of motor vehicles.
01:04You're under arrest.
01:05You're under arrest.
01:06Do not run!
01:07Swap the officer!
01:08And there's a promise!
01:09All right.
01:10Coming up...
01:11Stop!
01:12Stop!
01:13Stop!
01:14Stop!
01:15Stop!
01:16A summertime surge in car crime...
01:17Just doing donuts.
01:18...leaves officers under pressure...
01:19Hard cover...
01:20Hard cover...
01:21To help me out for the stinger.
01:22...as dangerous drivers...
01:23Get on the floor now!
01:24Down!
01:25Down!
01:26...and criminals on the run...
01:27Driver down there...
01:28Put lives at risk.
01:29It's an abort abort.
01:30There's too many tourists around.
01:31He's up the curve.
01:32He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
01:33There's a suspected...
01:34...clone vehicle...
01:35...sighted...
01:36...has hit on the floor.
01:37It's an abort abort.
01:38It's an abort abort.
01:39There's too many tourists around.
01:40He's up the curve.
01:41He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
01:42There's a suspected...
01:43...clone vehicle...
01:44...sighted...
01:45...has hit upon some cameras...
01:47...southbound.
01:48It's on the hot list.
01:49Right, OK.
01:50It's dangerous driving.
01:51It's a busy Saturday morning in June.
01:54You need to be aware of what details we're going to do.
01:56It's necessary.
01:57I've got to be aware of what details we're going to do.
01:58It's going to be aware of what details we're going to do.
01:59There's a suspected clone vehicle, sighted, hit upon some cameras southbound.
02:06It's on the hot list, right, OK. It's dangerous driving.
02:10It's a busy Saturday morning in June.
02:13You need to be aware we've got details of a stolen vehicle
02:16that's travelling down from Chesterfield.
02:20Good.
02:22It was stolen overnight last night from outside Keepers' address in Belper.
02:29Vehicles that just hit up.
02:33Near Derby, a stolen motorbike has triggered police cameras.
02:37Sergeant Scott Riley is on the lookout.
02:40Yeah, it's a black KTM 125 motorcycle. It was stolen overnight.
02:45With summer a peak time for crime, Scott and his team are under constant pressure.
02:51The course of the time of year it is, there are more people out there offending,
02:56with less and less officers to deal with that offending.
03:00The briefing this morning, the Chief's given a message out that one day this week
03:04we've had a busier day in calls for service than we have on a New Year's Eve.
03:09So, at the minute, demand is unprecedented.
03:16As Scott continues searching for the stolen motorbike...
03:1920 miles away, traffic cop Martin Carter is tailing a fail-to-stop driver, but needs backup.
03:38The reason for this stop is it was not disclaiming from the registration plate.
03:44I don't see the driver. He doesn't know.
03:46Number of occupants.
03:48No.
03:49I sit in.
03:50I'll continue the pursuit.
03:52Form an A pursuit is authorised.
03:54Keep me up to date with dynamic risk assessment, please.
03:57Control runs a check on the car's number plate.
04:00Vehicle is showing no insurance.
04:03A clone car is a car with exactly the same number plates of a different car.
04:09Clone vehicles aren't always stolen.
04:11They could be a vehicle that's not insured.
04:15Traffic is moderate.
04:17With the driver taking more risks.
04:20Stand by.
04:21Now, Chesterfield Road still.
04:23Don't be taking the wrong side of the road.
04:25Still safe to continue.
04:27Scott coordinates other units to help Martin.
04:30Going towards Heath.
04:32Hello.
04:33Hello.
04:34I'm heading to Poulterton.
04:37I'm just joining the M1 now.
04:39Traffic cop Alex Head is joining the pursuit.
04:424-3, you do Riley Hill.
04:44I'll do towards A617, Poulterton.
04:47Yes, sir.
04:48Yes, sir.
04:49Yes, sir.
04:50On tactical resources, have we got gaming?
04:53Have we got any stingers identified yet?
04:55There'll be a stinger site at the top of the road where the old garage was.
04:59Perfect. Thank you.
05:01The plan is to set a trap and puncture the car's tyres.
05:06I'm currently trying to get some stinger sites set up further up ahead
05:10to try and bring this car to a stop before it crashes and kills you.
05:18With the pursuit heading towards him, Scott gets ready to strike.
05:23We're heading into a residential area.
05:25Stand by.
05:26The speed is now 1-0-0.
05:29As Scott sets the trap, the suspect car approaches at nearly 80 miles an hour.
05:35This pursuit is dangerous.
05:36A lot of people are out.
05:38And the further we get down that road, we're getting to more populated residential areas
05:42where people can be crossing the road, children can be crossing the road.
05:46Big precipice brakes.
05:48Right, right, right onto Green Lane.
05:51Just as the stinger is set...
05:57..the driver turns off in another direction.
05:59There's a way from me now.
06:00He's up the curve.
06:01Lower it here.
06:02Lower it here.
06:03Lower it medium.
06:04General direction.
06:05Black.
06:06Alex Head positions himself on an alternate route.
06:07The vehicle's been doing loops around this area on the top of this hill up here, so I'm just
06:11floating up here just in the off chance.
06:12Once again, the driver turns off, but this time towards a local town.
06:28If somebody steps out on that road, if that car mounts a pavement, if it loses control, all
06:46of a sudden we can be into a situation where police officers are involved in causing the death of somebody.
06:52It's an immediate right, right, right.
06:58Extremely dangerous.
06:59We're in a residential area.
07:01The vehicle is a temporary fault.
07:03He's up the curb.
07:05It's an abort, abort, abort, abort, abort.
07:08He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
07:11Just to clarify, he's nearly...
07:13He ran over a pedestrian.
07:14He hasn't run over.
07:16It's a narrow miss.
07:17He's an abort.
07:19P.C. Carter's aborted.
07:22Nothing is worth getting a member of the public killed or seriously injured for.
07:32It is really frustrating what our job is to persevere.
07:37Scott and the team comb the area.
07:40Hello.
07:41You've not seen a red car come down here at all, have you?
07:46So good.
07:47Lovely.
07:49He comes back on PNC as a red.
07:50It's the act of a visa.
07:51I'm glad.
07:52Look at that little girl.
07:53From Tango 0-4, I spoke to public.
07:54They've not seen him, so I'm wondering if he's cut into the estate.
07:55Yeah, we see him.
07:56In that case, I'm going to head down to Hardwick area.
07:57Up there, unless anyone else is down there.
07:59As Alex continues the search.
08:00Just doing doughnuts.
08:01A different car catches his attention.
08:06Stop.
08:07Stop.
08:08Stop.
08:09Stop.
08:10Stop.
08:11Coming up, as one pursuit leads to another.
08:1710, 8, 10, 0, 4, 3, I've got a vehicle.
08:18Of course he has.
08:19More dangerous driving puts lives at risk.
08:20Too many tourists around.
08:21It's actually going off road.
08:22Contact, contact.
08:23And when a reported stolen car is spotted.
08:25The vehicle's increased in a vehicle.
08:26As we go to our engines.
08:28If our people are reacting to the power of pressure.
08:29That's why we can't get around for people.
08:30There's no danger.
08:31There's no danger behind that.
08:32There's no danger behind that.
08:33So let's go for a move.
08:34Stop.
08:35Stop.
08:36Stop.
08:37Stop.
08:38Stop.
08:39Stop.
08:40Stop.
08:42Stop.
08:43Stop!
08:44Stop!
08:45Stop!
08:46Stop!
08:47Stop! Stop!
08:48Stop! Stop! Stop!
08:50Stop! Stop!
08:51I was leaving, I was reacting to our perspective.
08:53Officers hunt down a suspect.
08:55I've done nothing wrong, you arrested me for no reason.
09:12To try and bring this car to the stop
09:14before we crash this and kill some.
09:16It's a Saturday morning in June.
09:19We're heading into a residential area.
09:21Amidst a summer surge in crime,
09:24Sergeant Scott Riley and his team
09:26have already been involved in one pursuit.
09:30He's up the curve, it's an abort abort.
09:32He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
09:36While searching for a fail-to-stop driver...
09:42Just doing donuts.
09:44Traffic cop Alex Head spots a car doing burnouts
09:47in the middle of the road.
09:49Stop! Stop! Stop!
09:51Stop!
09:56An eight, ten, no, four, three, I've got V.
09:58I've got V.
09:59Stop.
10:00Of course they have.
10:01In the space of 40 minutes,
10:03officers are forced into a pursuit for the second time.
10:06Can I please have authority to pursue?
10:09DRA is currently medium.
10:11The driver instantly has seen me.
10:13He's panicked.
10:14He knows he's just messed up.
10:16That's why he's making off right now.
10:18Well, it's a BMW 1 Series in black.
10:20We've got VRM.
10:22Vehicle is three up.
10:23Just ran this vehicle through Niche.
10:25He's only small driver and uninsured.
10:27Standby.
10:28Speed is at 6-0 in the 6-0.
10:32Scott sets a trap to puncture the car's tyres.
10:38Hard cover.
10:39Talk me out for the stinger.
10:41Standby.
10:42It's just dived off.
10:44Down an unnamed road.
10:47When you get in a car, it's a one or two-ton killing machine.
11:02If you lose control of it, you're potentially
11:03going to kill another person.
11:05I think it's very terrifying.
11:07And it also presents a risk for other road users.
11:10We're going back down now towards hard work.
11:13Male driver, across where heat post is.
11:17If you head down there and take the next left,
11:20that's where the vehicle will be coming out.
11:23NA from 4-3.
11:24It's a total loss at this time.
11:30But despite the driver's disappearance,
11:32Scott and Alex aren't giving up.
11:36Look like somebody wants me to get a stinger on a vehicle today.
11:39Have you had a car go past here?
11:44Have you had a car go past here at speed?
11:47No, that's a bit of a car.
11:49I've just had members of the public.
11:53It's not gone past them, so I think it will have probably
11:56gone into Hardwick Park.
11:58Alex follows the vehicle onto the grounds
12:01of a busy National Trust property.
12:03It's a car go past here at speed, a black car.
12:15Yeah.
12:16It was a black BMW.
12:17Yeah.
12:18Excellent.
12:19Yeah.
12:20NA 10.043.
12:21It's confirmed that this BMW 1 Series has come
12:23through Hardwick Park.
12:30Contact, contact with that vehicle.
12:33It's in a port-to-port, too many tourists around.
12:42It's actually going off-road.
12:44There's sheep and livestock in the fields.
12:47And hey, I'm going to need to know where this road comes out.
12:49There was an exit loop.
12:51So we've lost the vehicle this time.
12:54I'm not about to start pursuing something
12:56at a tourist hotspot.
12:58It just would have ended in absolute disaster.
13:01What often happens in a pursuit, the adrenaline
13:04starts kicking in.
13:06If you're not used to it and you're not trained,
13:08then that's where the mistakes start happening.
13:11Unfortunately, in a high-powered car like that,
13:13there's every likelihood he's going to end up hurting himself
13:16and potentially somebody else.
13:17a vehicle check reveals the name of two brothers linked to the car.
13:26We have a steady flow of intel about people who shouldn't be driving.
13:30We're putting two and two together at the moment
13:31and hopefully we're going to find the vehicle.
13:36Within less than an hour, Scott and the team have had two fail-to-stops.
13:41As they continue to search North East Derbyshire for the wanted vehicles...
13:46We have currently got a vehicle.
13:48It's activating AMDR cameras.
13:5030 miles west, in the Peak District,
13:53police cameras have picked up a third wanted car.
13:56It's got a stolen marker on it.
13:59Traffic cop Andy Swift gets behind it.
14:02Standby.
14:03OK, this vehicle's face.
14:09DR8 is low.
14:10Booker speed is 3-0.
14:12We are off Meadow Lane.
14:14It is confirmed.
14:15Stolen.
14:16Stolen my way of a car-key burglary.
14:18The car was stolen from a building supply store.
14:23Temporary DR8 is high.
14:24Birth is Ashbourne Lane.
14:25Ashbourne Lane.
14:26Speed is 4-8.
14:2860-0.
14:29Standby.
14:31Car thieves.
14:32We know well that if they get in a police pursuit,
14:34they'll do some ludicrously dangerous thing
14:36that they hope will prevent us doing the same
14:39and will abandon the pursuit.
14:43The area is the temporary block by a postal van
14:46of naturally catching that vehicle.
14:48Standby.
14:51The vehicle's still Ashbourne Road down to Ashbourne Lane.
14:55When you are chasing after people,
14:57you're probably chasing after someone
14:58that probably knows the area better than you,
14:59so you're always at a bit of a disadvantage.
15:01It is quite easy for someone to lose you
15:03within two or three turns
15:05if you can't keep up with them
15:06or you get blocked by traffic.
15:08Exactly down there.
15:09Yeah, taking a right, right, right in the direction.
15:11Chin, you've lost them.
15:16Hayfield Road East.
15:17Hayfield Road East.
15:18Standby.
15:19Good.
15:20We are on a 624.
15:24Speed is 6-0 and a 4-0.
15:26Engine is 3-0.
15:30The DR8 is temporarily high and back to low
15:32and overtakes all of the vehicles.
15:34The vehicle's overtaking all solid bikes.
15:36Back on to the correct side of the road,
15:38the DR8 is medium.
15:40I am directly behind this vehicle again.
15:42It scares me to think that there's young lads out there
15:43that will put themselves and all the members of the public
15:44at such high risk.
15:45If they go out and they crash the car,
15:46and ultimately if they hurt themselves and kill themselves,
15:47whilst it is very sad, they have made a choice.
15:49But if they're to get other innocent people involved in that,
15:50those people haven't made that choice.
15:51The vehicle is a right, right, right, in the Jarenex Glossett
15:54and Hayfield A624, going under the bridge.
16:01The DR8 is locked.
16:03The garage is locked.
16:06The CRWCAD is locked.
16:08Right, right, right, and Jerry next to Glosset and Hayfield, A624, going under the bridge.
16:20VRA is low, now it's over to high, back to low as the vehicle overtakes cycles.
16:26Slightly blocked by vehicles.
16:32It's getting round on that vehicle again now, so it's managed to make its way from here.
16:35We're still on Hayfield Road, Hayfield Road.
16:39Local officers make their way to the area.
16:43Now entering the national speed window.
16:45Just keep it slightly back at A.
16:49The vehicle is doing a right, right, right down what is some sort of dirt track.
17:04We're 4-7. I got out of foot. I've also dumped it so far down the lane.
17:08With two suspects now on the run.
17:14Do you say the other short?
17:16Other officers arrive to help.
17:19And spot one of them.
17:21Two Charlie, they're on the foot.
17:24Downhill towards the farm.
17:27Down the ground.
17:28Down.
17:30Half the end to back.
17:32Under arrest.
17:33This is fixed at the death of the motor vehicle.
17:35I've stayed in.
17:36No expense. Don't mention my question.
17:38Is that the line cut?
17:39Anything do you say?
17:40They're giving evidence.
17:42An A from two Charlie.
17:43Born under arrest.
17:44Death motor vehicle.
17:45Another male's made up on foot towards that farm.
17:48All in black.
17:50Are those cops, are they all right?
17:51They're too tight?
17:52No, they're completely fine.
17:54Right.
17:56Well, you're in a stolen car.
17:58It's failed to stop for police.
18:00And you've run off from us, all right?
18:01On your feet.
18:04These people will generally find that the people who are being paid to go and do it are usually from very poor upbringings who've not got much.
18:10So if they get told, well, you go out on a couple of cars and you can have a couple of grand in your back pocket, people are going to do that.
18:15With one in custody, local police will continue to look for the other suspect.
18:22It's nice to actually catch someone that has stolen someone's car.
18:26That's what police officers join the job for.
18:29Just stop and reunite someone with their property.
18:37Within just 60 minutes, the team has been forced into three dangerous pursuits.
18:44I think this, now we've just had, proves what we're up against as a police force.
18:49We're certainly getting more and more incidents where they're taking all manner of risks.
18:54Whether it's in response to reduced police resources, I don't know, but it is becoming more and more common.
19:04I never enjoy a pursuit, but the reality is that we're going to have to continue doing it, which is why we keep the training up.
19:10We keep practising it and every day we get better.
19:18So, to be fair, because we're all out, we've got the tactical resources out.
19:22If it had come straight up that hill, it would have been mustard.
19:24Yeah.
19:25Because I was looking for that seer, because he could have come down this way, and I come around that junction, and this little BMW is just doing like donuts.
19:34And it stalled it, and then he couldn't get it going.
19:37Anyway, hopefully it should be all along the cameras.
19:39We've just had three pursuits in an hour.
19:41Yeah.
19:42It's becoming feral.
19:43So, something's got to be done.
19:44If that plane had been up, it would have been bang on for both.
19:47Yeah.
19:48I'm going to have a sandwich, because it's that time.
19:51Can't believe it's half-time already.
19:52No, I can't.
19:53At least Swifty got his.
19:54If any police force was to adopt a no-pursuit policy, then you're looking at anarchy.
20:02There can't ever be a time when the police can't bring a vehicle to a stop, and we've got professional tactics to do that, and we do it really quite well.
20:13Coming up...
20:15One out on the inside.
20:17One out on the inside.
20:18Two out on the inside.
20:19Stop! Get out of here!
20:20The summer crime spree continues.
20:22Where was yours at?
20:23Where's my arm sitting?
20:24Two of them have gone left.
20:25As Scott and the team hunt down runaway suspects from a reported stolen car.
20:31It's a moment in time you're under arrest, theft of motor vehicle.
20:51What are we looking for?
20:53Blue Mercedes A5.
20:54Near Chesterfield, Sergeant Scott Riley and his team are fighting a summertime spike in crime.
21:03So we're just making our way towards the A61.
21:08Where stolen cars activate the ANPR cameras.
21:12Tonight, three units are searching for a car reported stolen.
21:16It's not it, is it?
21:17No.
21:18Patrolling alongside Scott is traffic cop Jack Pressland in a marked car and an unmarked armed response unit.
21:31I was trying to find out what the circumstances are.
21:32It's a Mercedes, quite high powered car, so it would be a good one to get back.
21:44Problems with vehicle crime is the other criminality around it, the burglaries, the dangerous driving, the felt stops, drugs.
21:59These people will do anything to keep that vehicle with them, so they drive dangerously and recklessly.
22:12The woman who reported the car stolen says it was taken by someone she knows.
22:25Received.
22:26Sounds very messy.
22:27More details come in about the suspected car thief.
22:32It's somebody called 19 years old.
22:36He's got warning markers for firearms making threats, so quite a dangerous offender.
22:54Still a very, very strange incident.
23:00So, reading between the lines, a girl's got herself mixed up with lads that deal drugs, run drugs.
23:06They've taken her car.
23:08She knows who these people are, but she's a bit scared.
23:12Or won't tell us the full story.
23:18We've got our potential, though, an A61's larger chest.
23:21We're just trying to get behind the car.
23:26Luckily, firearms units have managed to get behind it in an unmarked vehicle,
23:30and it's coming in my direction.
23:33We work closely with the arm response team, their advanced drivers as well,
23:38so we'll look again, it's stopped.
23:40We're about to it.
23:42Jack wakes up just ahead of the suspect car.
23:44Jack, you have...
23:50Yeah, it is.
23:51Contact, contact.
23:56And in there with the firearms, they're directly behind it, unmarked vehicle.
23:59And A, just to make you aware, unmarked vehicle.
24:04High performance, our advanced driver.
24:07See you back.
24:09Got an offside indication.
24:11Right, right, right.
24:13You going towards one low car?
24:14No.
24:16Plastic's got rid, basically.
24:18Chestfield down, passing the speed camera.
24:20I'm thinking, when is this going to fail to stop?
24:22It's a stolen motor vehicle, and it's got three police vehicles behind it.
24:28It's only a matter of time.
24:32Got an offside indication.
24:34Right, right, right.
24:36Near-side indication.
24:39That might cancel the vehicle's increasing its speed.
24:43I believe it's reacting to our presence.
24:45I believe it's a right-right.
24:49Come on.
24:524-0, car two.
24:55There's always a worry when a vehicle fails to stop.
24:58What risk are they going to take to get away?
25:00What are they going to do?
25:05Entering a housing estate, officers lose sight of the Mercedes.
25:10I believe it's a right-right.
25:11I believe it's a right-right.
25:15Crash, crash, crash.
25:17One out.
25:18Near-side.
25:19One out and running.
25:20Two out and running.
25:21Three out and running.
25:22Driver down there.
25:25One run down there.
25:26Yeah.
25:28I'll go and have that cover there.
25:30As firearms officers follow two of the runners on foot,
25:34Jack searches for the third.
25:36Yeah, they're potentially going in in a direction and the way that the two is moving.
25:42Stop there now.
25:44Stop!
25:45Get here!
25:46Show me hands now!
25:47Show me hands!
25:48Get on the floor!
25:49Get on the floor now!
25:51Down!
25:52Down!
25:53Get your hands behind your bike now!
25:55Get your hands behind your bike!
25:57You haven't done anything, man.
25:59I haven't done anything.
26:00Give me hands?
26:01I haven't done anything.
26:02I haven't done anything.
26:04I haven't done anything.
26:05I haven't done anything.
26:06It's a moment in time you're under arrest for theft of motor vehicle.
26:09What?
26:10You do not have to say anything but may on defence not mention.
26:11When you question something which is later on in court,
26:13and if you do say maybe in evidence,
26:15there's still going to be another one round here, mate.
26:18What? I haven't stolen that.
26:194-0.
26:20Got one detained.
26:22Stand here.
26:25Scott arrives to assist the search.
26:29Show me light over here.
26:31Where was yours, Jack?
26:33Say again, Scott.
26:34Where was yours?
26:35We're by arm sitting.
26:36Two of them have gone left.
26:42The car's just been abandoned there,
26:44so it would make sense to come up here into one of these gardens here.
26:48Right, you're under arrest.
26:49I'm submitting a theft of motor vehicle, OK?
26:51Go, Tony, you shouldn't have.
26:52No.
26:54I've just got my phone on my V blocks, is it?
26:57Check back at your waistband, mate.
26:58Love, mate.
26:59Love, mate.
27:00Have you got rips on your trousers, pal?
27:03Yeah, I fell over.
27:04All right.
27:05What are you doing down here, then?
27:08Starting with my friend.
27:09All right.
27:10Just keep him in your coffin now,
27:11and we'll sign out what we're doing in Gothenburg.
27:14This gentleman's been locked up at this moment
27:16on suspicion of theft of that motor vehicle
27:17until we can find out of us.
27:19Luckily, I've seen him in the corner of my eye,
27:21and he's obviously shattered,
27:23because he's let a fat man catch him.
27:26Jack hands over the young suspect to local officers
27:29to take him to the police station.
27:31You're going to end up getting interviewed, mate?
27:33Yeah, that sounds.
27:35We'll have to speak to your mum, because you're 17, so...
27:3716.
27:38And you're out in a stolen car.
27:39I didn't know it was a stolen car.
27:43He's now put himself in this vehicle.
27:45It's not the brightest thing to do, but he's helped us out,
27:49and, obviously, we can then put it in an interview to him.
27:51Have a good think about it, yeah?
27:53He shouldn't have been in a stolen car that's failed to stop,
27:55should you?
27:56Right, these fine gentlemen are going to give you a lift.
27:58Have a think about who you're hanging around with, mate.
28:03Thank you very much, fellas.
28:04Have a good night. See you later.
28:07This lad is just going down a really bad path.
28:11Children nowadays are being manipulated.
28:16They're promised reward.
28:1815, 16-year-old child getting drugs, getting money.
28:22It's easier for them to go and commit criminality
28:24than getting the pocket money for washing the pots.
28:29He's gone up that jitty and then walked across,
28:31and then I've literally seen him on the next street.
28:33Yeah, because you turned up there, didn't you?
28:34Yeah.
28:35And just as I'm going back up there,
28:36I've seen a black figure come past me and I thought,
28:39it's got to be him.
28:40Yeah, he's ripped all his trousers, though.
28:42He's got blood all over his face.
28:43There's clothing, edge-hopping.
28:44With one suspect caught, two are still missing.
28:48Oh, so they've actually gone starburst in literally three different directions.
28:51Yeah.
28:52He's clearly involved.
28:53I don't know.
28:54I've locked him up at the minute on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle.
28:55We're not going to be able to prove he's driving, are we?
28:57No.
28:58They were quick, though.
28:59I said that.
29:00I said he was right quick, that was.
29:01Yeah.
29:02Yeah.
29:03Yeah.
29:04Yeah.
29:05I said that.
29:06Yeah.
29:07Yeah.
29:08Yeah.
29:09Yeah.
29:10They've clearly decamped as the vehicle's been moving.
29:14It's come to lay in the tree, so...
29:16What's it done?
29:17Lost it and mounted the kerb, you think?
29:19Look, it's not taken a corner of that house out.
29:21Have you seen how close that is?
29:23They find a single trainer by the driver's door.
29:27Have you seen how he's managed to get out?
29:29No.
29:30Like that.
29:31He's nearly boxed himself in, hasn't he?
29:33Why do they have all the luck in the world?
29:35Oh, well, at least we'll go right back.
29:37Like I said, they've clearly been to McDonald's, haven't they?
29:40Yeah.
29:41As you can see, they've been to a famous fast food restaurant prior to this,
29:46so plenty CCTV enquiries there.
29:49On a street nearby...
29:52Don't go out and be nice though, I've done nothing wrong.
29:55..firearms officers find two men.
29:58I'll tell you why, right?
30:00Because we suspect that you're one of the ones that went running off.
30:04What?
30:05Run off and wait.
30:06I don't get what you're saying.
30:08I've done nothing wrong.
30:09You're arresting me for no reason.
30:10I'll search you.
30:12Yeah, yeah, you stand that way, mate.
30:14He's got a cheeseburger still in his pocket.
30:16Has he?
30:17Oh, no!
30:18I bet that's cold.
30:21Oh!
30:23The suspect, found with a burger in his pocket,
30:26appears to be missing something.
30:28The driver of the vehicle, that's his other shoe.
30:32It was found at the driver's side of the door,
30:35so there's something else that puts him there, really.
30:37So I can look up with that for some evidence.
30:40Unfortunately, with this evidence, this gentleman's not going to the ball tonight.
30:45He'll be going shoeless to custody instead.
30:47Yeah, come on, mate.
31:00Jack arrives at custody with one of the suspected passengers.
31:04Let's take a seat on that bench there for a second, buddy.
31:07Stinking weighted, do you have any on you?
31:09I don't know, they've already searched me.
31:10Have they?
31:11Yeah.
31:12Come up, then, mate.
31:13Just come stand here, fella.
31:14Hey.
31:15Time of arrival is 01.25 hours, Sarge.
31:16He's been arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle.
31:18He's been named, and in the area of a motor vehicle that's failed to stop for police,
31:23and people have ran from the vehicle.
31:24He's been located nearby, meeting another named offender who's also ran from the vehicle.
31:28I'm Henderson.
31:29I'm in the car.
31:30I'll ride the car.
31:31I'm getting that stolen car.
31:32You'll see it.
31:33Tires.
31:34What's happening to you, send?
31:35It's of course.
31:362 in the morning, mate.
31:37By the time paperwork's going to be early, I certainly have.
31:38Well, it's a bit morning, mate.
31:39Okay, given the circumstances for the arrest when all the rides are up.
31:40It's about to be late and all the rides are out, and people have ran from the vehicle.
31:41He's been located nearby, meeting another name defender who's also ran from the vehicle.
31:44He's been located nearby meeting another named offender who's also ran from the vehicle.
31:49Come in, listen.
31:50I'm in the car.
31:51I'll ride the car.
31:52I'm going to be all the car.
31:53I'm going to start one car.
31:54You'll see.
31:55I'm tired.
31:56I'm tired.
31:57What happened until your time?
31:58Well, it's a bit morning, mate.
32:00OK, so given the circumstances for the arrest,
32:03I'm going to all drive attention, OK? Just to be able to serve evidence.
32:18Outside, officers bring in the suspected driver.
32:25So, you've got the shoeless one? Yes.
32:27Oh, that one's funny, isn't it?
32:30How it's next to your driver's door.
32:32We'll be here to drive in the car, won't we?
32:34You lot have arrested people here. I was in the car alone.
32:37Well, we know that's not true. I was in the car alone.
32:39Well, I've been in custody.
32:41One of the gentlemen's admitted driving,
32:43so it's pretty much bang on, really.
32:45We've now got three locked up, bits in a stolen car,
32:49took off the street, so really good job. Teams work well.
32:52Regarding punishments for this kind of offence,
32:57ideally, you should be getting a custodial sentence,
33:00but that would be mainly for the driver who commits more offences,
33:04such as the dangerous drive, fail to stop, no document offences.
33:07And the passengers will look at safeguarding.
33:15Coming up...
33:16Contact, contact with that vehicle.
33:18..a hunt for another car reported stolen.
33:21It's well aware of my presence.
33:23..and a learner driver facing a long walk home.
33:26Where's your L-plates? You know, the learner plates.
33:29So she can't drive without those.
33:31So, even if this was not stolen, it would still be taken anyway.
33:51Observations for another vehicle stolen at Langley-Mail-Hena
33:54around 6am this morning.
33:56More than 120,000 cars are stolen in the UK each year,
34:02with a vehicle taken every four minutes.
34:05The number of stolen cars that travel through Derbyshire every day
34:09or get stolen in Derbyshire, it is definitely on the increase.
34:12We all pay a lot of money for cars.
34:15It's probably the second biggest purchase that anyone ever makes
34:17after the mortgage for the house.
34:19So I want to try and stop people that are obviously trying to steal your car
34:23and, ultimately, try and get that car back.
34:25We have currently got a vehicle, shown as a clone,
34:28heading southbound on the M1.
34:29It's activating ANPR cameras.
34:32A nationwide network of police cameras
34:34helps officers like traffic cop Andy Swift
34:37to locate stolen vehicles.
34:41There are tens of thousands of ANPR cameras around the country
34:45that track vehicle movements.
34:47It will flag up saying that there's stolen vehicles in this location
34:50travelling in this direction.
34:51It's been an activation for a stolen car, M1 northbound.
34:53Can we put a job on? I'll pass you details.
34:54Andy begins the hunt for the suspected stolen vehicle.
34:58I'll try and locate it.
34:59Scott, you can go 28 if you want.
35:00Sergeant Scott Riley joins the search.
35:05Yeah, if you wouldn't mind. I'll try and get behind it.
35:06I'm about three minutes behind it. I'll put a follow-me in at 27 if it's
35:08gone.
35:09If it's gone, it'll go before then, and then you've got time to at least put the block
35:14on.
35:15Scott, I'm just at 27. I'm just going to come off. It will lap right roundabout, make sure
35:22it's not come off.
35:23It's not come off towards Annesley, and then I'll rejoin northbound if you're already there.
35:30Yeah, I'm just at 27. I'm just going to come off. It will lap right roundabout, make sure
35:36it's not come off towards Annesley, and then I'll rejoin northbound if you're already there.
35:42There we are, that's it there. I think it's going to be contact-contact. I'll confirm for
35:59you in about five seconds on the roundabout. It's contact-contact with that vehicle. It's
36:05well aware of my presence directly behind it.
36:08Yes, yes, that's correct. It's the second-the-second on the roundabout. I'll put a stop in when
36:17you get a bit further down. Just for information, it's a fully-liberated high-points vehicle,
36:21a banter driver, a T-pack train. I think there's multiple occupants. I can see heads bobbing
36:25around. Stand-by. It's on to the roundabout. It's not one, not one. It's the second-the-second.
36:34I'm going to stop it in a bus bay just prior to the roundabout.
36:53Hey, vehicle's stopped.
36:55Hello. Are you all right? Just turn the engine off for us.
37:02There are three women in the car.
37:04Is it your car? Lovely. All right. Just step out and I'll explain why. All right.
37:09My boyfriend's car. Okay, that's all right, no worries. All right, no worries. Love it.
37:12Is it your car or your boyfriend's? My boyfriend's car. I'll come round there.
37:18Hey, thank you for some. I've got that vehicle stopped. I'll update you in a minute.
37:24So, it's your boyfriend's car. Your boyfriend's car. Right. So, when did you buy it?
37:29Come out, it's a bar. Yeah. It's been reported that I think what you've done is you've bought a car that is stolen.
37:36The person that sold it, you, has stolen it.
37:40The person sells the car to another person. Yeah.
37:45To my friend. My friend sells the car for me.
37:48Yes. Right, no worries. All right. Lovely.
37:52Scott Riley arrives on scene.
37:55I think what's happened is that someone stole it, sold it on to probably someone else who's then sold it to you.
38:05So, ultimately, someone has had their car stolen and you've bought it, not through any malicious means.
38:11You've not done it yourself, but you've been the unfortunate victim. So, that's why you need to report it.
38:15I'm inclined to an extent to believe them that they've probably bought it not knowing that it's stolen.
38:22But I'm also very aware of the fact that it might have been a case of ask no questions, tell no lies sort of situation.
38:30Experience has taught me that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
38:34Have you got any insurance to drive it? Yes.
38:37Have you got your driver's license on you? No.
38:40Anyway, what's your first name? Type that in there. And your date of birth.
38:44You've got a provisional license, is that right? Yeah.
38:47Where's your L plates? Yeah.
38:50Because she can't drive without L plates. You know, the learner plates.
38:54So, she can't drive without those. So, even if this was not stolen, it would still be taken anyway.
39:02Because she's not got the correct documentation.
39:04Okay, and they take back the car?
39:06Well, probably never, because it's...
39:08Because she drive or because it's stolen?
39:10Well, initially, because it's stolen, but also...
39:12But, well, she's got no L plates.
39:17Andy runs the vehicle details through the motor insurance database.
39:21You're not listed on the insurance. There's only these people and that person.
39:27So, your name's not there. All right.
39:30She's got no insurance for it. She's got no insurance.
39:33It's estimated that there are one million uninsured drivers in the UK.
39:39Yeah, ready for a 10-15 person in the L check, please, 2-4.
39:43Scott checks the license details of the woman who bought the car with her boyfriend.
39:48Yeah, so, when did she pass her test, please?
39:52Yes, she has confirmed that she's a named driver.
39:55Yeah, love and thank you.
39:57Yeah, she is named on it.
39:59Why is she driving if she's got a license to insure?
40:03I don't know.
40:05Why would you do that?
40:06Right, because you've not got a license and you've got no L plates and no insurance,
40:10you're getting points on your driver's license and about £400 in fines.
40:15Why aren't you driving it? You've got a license to drive it.
40:18You should drive it.
40:19You know you've done it because you're smiling.
40:22It's a wholly bizarre situation when the passenger of a vehicle is insured
40:27and would let their friend drive who's got a provisional license, no L plates, no insurance,
40:32and go on a motorway, which you're not allowed to do unless it's with a DVSA-approved driving instructor.
40:37So what needs to happen is, how many have you got in the back? Two? One.
40:41One.
40:42You need to get all your personal belongings, because just in case you never see the car again,
40:47make sure you've got everything out that you need to have.
40:49Maybe, maybe, yes.
40:51Yeah.
40:52All your car, all your house keys, all your stuff like that, iPhones, chargers.
40:56Scenarios such as this have come in much, much more common where people are buying cars,
41:01then you're telling them, well, unfortunately, I'm afraid your car's stolen.
41:04Got it.
41:05All right, thank you.
41:06And ultimately, they'll just end up being carless and cashless.
41:11You want your cigarettes?
41:14Cigarettes?
41:15Or are they empty?
41:17All right.
41:18Hopefully, now we've got that car back, someone else will be able to claim it back from the recovery garage.
41:23In regards to the driver, she's looking at about 12 points,
41:26but it's three for driving that L plate, six for no insurance,
41:29and then three for driving on the motorway.
41:31So she's effectively, in one fell swoop, managed to get herself 12 points.
41:34They'll probably disqualify, I would imagine.
41:37It's a nail, innit?
41:38Yeah.
41:39Worthwhile stop then.
41:40Just make a good ground, you know, motorway, that is.
41:42That's as with her driving, who's not insured?
41:46Just make a good ground, that is.
41:47That's how we do, 130.
41:48I'm probably about a mile and a half from 25 in here.
41:50It's crackers.
41:51Yeah.
41:52But I own it.
41:53Sympathies are limited.
41:55Yeah.
41:56Yeah.
41:59Most members of the public are very aware that if your car gets stolen,
42:02chances of you getting it back are slim.
42:04So when we do get one that is shown as stolen, I always try and respond to it if I can.
42:09Obviously, that's the main goal.
