Transcript
00:00Police, that's the data! Stop!
00:02Driver's making off.
00:04Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:05Pull over in here now!
00:07Might be game on for something here.
00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22Just have warning markers for firearms.
00:25Vehicle's done.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:35Here you go, here you go.
00:36Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40You're doing it!
00:41Come out of here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Police!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57For the traffic cops.
00:59You've blown 128.
01:0011 minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Conspicion of theft of motor vehicles.
01:04Oh my God!
01:05Do not run!
01:07Swat the officer!
01:09Another problem!
01:10All right.
01:10I've got a vehicle failing to stop.
01:17Coming up.
01:18Crash, crash.
01:19It's going to the back of the silver car.
01:22Traffic cops cracking down.
01:24Vehicle continues.
01:259-0 in a 3-0.
01:28On young and reckless drivers.
01:30I'm going to have to use tactical contact.
01:32Who put lives at risk.
01:35Get out!
01:36Get out!
01:37Paddy, don't jump at me.
01:38I'm so pleased!
01:39And go on the run.
01:40Turn your engine off.
01:42People like yourself put other people at risk.
01:44Or you're chasing the other birds.
01:45Rubbish.
01:45As most of the fatal crashes in the UK are on rural roads.
02:05What vehicle is it?
02:06Let me know where it belongs.
02:09Traffic cops like Paddy Shambrook patrol the Derbyshire countryside.
02:13Looking out for reckless drivers.
02:16It's early on a Saturday morning.
02:18Today we're looking for just bad driving.
02:21Lots and lots of tourists generally on the weekend.
02:23Out here into the Dales and into the Peter Street.
02:26Hi, it's Dobbshire Police.
02:28Where are you at the moment?
02:30We've got multiple reports coming in.
02:32I don't know if we can divert any units at all.
02:35Several calls are coming in about a white BMW driving dangerously.
02:41Keep going.
02:42Nice video.
02:42A couple in their camper van record the suspect car swerving all over the road.
02:53Units for observations.
02:54We've got reports of some dangerous driving.
02:56Swerving back and forth all over the lane.
02:58Informant status of the possible DIC.
03:01Any sightings, stop, check, call, control.
03:02Nice to know why.
03:04With a suspected drunk driver on the move.
03:08Yeah, 2-4.
03:09Just keep an eye out.
03:10Paddy races to the area.
03:14When you've got several different people ringing the police because of such poor driving,
03:20obviously it needs stopping.
03:22Yeah, we've got contact, contact with that vehicle.
03:28He spots the suspect.
03:29He's coming past us now.
03:32Heading towards him.
03:33His face just looks completely glazed over as if he doesn't really know what's going on.
03:39Yeah, drive looks intoxicated.
03:41But he's obviously with it enough to accelerate and try and get away from me.
03:48So I'm thinking he must be under the influence of substances.
03:51Now, failing to stop.
03:54Let's go in wrong side of solid wire line system.
03:57DRA is high.
03:59Have permission for pursuit, please?
04:02Advanced, high performance, marked car.
04:05Advanced driver, T-pack trains.
04:06Have we got any M-pass or dogs?
04:10Have we got any stinger that we can set up in front of me at Chesterfield?
04:14DRA is high.
04:15I was going to get busier now.
04:18From an AC ever too, I am monitoring this incident.
04:20And based on everything you've told me so far, pursuit is authorised.
04:24You've got people just going about their leisurely weekend business.
04:28And he's just careering towards that at, you know, 75, 80 miles an hour.
04:33Did a smoke coming off the back tyres.
04:36It appeared that the vehicle is only on three wheels.
04:39With a missing wheel, it seems the suspect has already had a collision
04:44and is fighting to keep control.
04:46It's frightening, this willingness to drive like that
04:51and risk completely innocent lives
04:54for the sake of trying to get away from the police.
04:56He is going to kill someone.
04:58Paddy is on his own.
05:00So other units, including PC Paul Barker, race to back him up.
05:05And he continues, wrong side, into oncoming traffic.
05:14Crash, crash, he's going to the back of the car.
05:19I'm on my own, I'm going to have to stop this vehicle.
05:22I'm going to have to use tactical contact.
05:26I've got to hit this person,
05:28driving a block of metal at 80 miles an hour.
05:30There's absolutely no way this can continue.
05:32As Paddy rammed the suspect off the road,
05:39Crash, crash, crash.
05:41Another motorist helps box him in from behind.
05:45Vehicle stopped.
05:47Paddy is trapped and escapes through the passenger door.
05:51Number five, bravo, Charlie, state six.
05:54As backup arrives,
05:56a member of the public tackles the driver to the ground
05:58before he's detained by officers.
06:00Can you poop that right now?
06:03Top of a little, my body's head, but it's been serious.
06:06Excuse me.
06:07Are you all right?
06:08We've got people to you in a minute.
06:09Is anyone, is anyone hurt?
06:13Paul arrives on scene
06:14as officers secure the suspect.
06:17Do your leg was straight, son.
06:19In the back of a police van.
06:21You've been to army, bro.
06:22You've been to off gun.
06:23Right.
06:24You've been to off gun, bro.
06:25I stay on top.
06:25Have you been to off gun?
06:28So, please.
06:28Oh, my God.
06:30Paddy, don't jump out.
06:31Please.
06:32Paddy.
06:33Stop.
06:34There we go.
06:35Stop.
06:37Suspected of being under the influence,
06:40officers need to get the driver to custody quickly
06:42for a drink and drug test.
06:44You're under arrest on what's called section four,
06:47on suspicion of driving
06:49whilst unfit through drink or drug.
06:52All right.
06:53Fairly to stop.
06:54Dangerous driving.
06:55And section four.
06:57He was so close to killing several people.
07:01And yet, despite that,
07:02he's still shouting abuse,
07:04being violent.
07:06You just can't believe
07:07that someone would have
07:09such disregard
07:11for everybody else.
07:13I told you now,
07:15you're not going to get me out of here.
07:17Watch what you're about to do.
07:19Oh.
07:22Tell her.
07:23Get out of here.
07:24Calm it down, mate.
07:26He's going in there, wouldn't he?
07:28I'll get him, brother.
07:30Come and fight.
07:31It's absolutely horrendous.
07:33He just takes a massive dislike to me.
07:35He's just upset that, you know,
07:36his party's finally been stopped.
07:38You're going to have to wait.
07:39If you're going to bang his head like,
07:39we're going to have to go in there, will you?
07:40We're going to need to go in.
07:43But before officers step in...
07:45All you're going to do
07:46is take me back to the Chesterfield Police Station.
07:49He calms down.
07:52You're going to stick with your statement,
07:54then you're going to discharge me,
07:56and that is it.
07:57There's nothing to worry about then, is there?
07:59You might as well just be chill.
08:00It's like that.
08:01You're mixed in that.
08:04True it.
08:06Actually, true it, though.
08:07If you can prove that,
08:09then you'll know.
08:10You're all fired for it, me.
08:12The man is now ready to be taken to custody.
08:15Do you know where you're going for clear, though, yeah?
08:17Yeah, yeah.
08:19Paul assesses the scene.
08:21Howdy, what have you done?
08:23I've seen a little work.
08:24I see a second informant.
08:26All right, just joined another team.
08:28Oh, yeah, because this guy's about to kill someone.
08:30Literally about to kill someone.
08:31Yeah.
08:31Colleague Dave Shaw checks on the driver of the red car who helped box the suspect in and tackled him to the ground.
08:40I was on the way to the car boot.
08:43I was sat at the traffic lights, minding business, and someone just smashed right into the back of me.
08:50He went round, then he started driving like a madman.
08:54So I thought, I better follow him.
08:56He smashed into the lamppost.
08:57Police car boxed him in on the left.
09:00I thought, I better get in behind him, so he doesn't reverse.
09:04The policeman couldn't get out of the car, because his door was blocked.
09:07I just thought, we can't let this guy get away.
09:10He got out, ran off.
09:12I ran after him, grabbed him.
09:14We went to the floor, and I just kept hold of him until the policeman came.
09:19Are you all right, sir?
09:20Yeah, not bad yet.
09:20Hey, Huff.
09:21All right.
09:22Paddy checks on the drive with the silver car that was smashed into back up the road.
09:27It just hit me from behind.
09:30And I just noticed he was on three wheels.
09:32I wish I had to go up all the way.
09:33I was thinking about pedestrians that were coming and stuff.
09:35Just thinking, this is going to get busier and busier here, isn't it?
09:39Coats.
09:41Shopping.
09:43A search of the car uncovers some suspicious items.
09:49Got an open bottle of bud.
09:52An open can of strong lager.
09:56And there's medication on the floor.
09:58And his driving license is there as well.
10:01We've passed the details.
10:05Potential breach of our own.
10:07That's what I'm thinking.
10:08So this.
10:08The man was released from jail ten days ago and is not allowed contact with his ex-partner.
10:17Officers think this could be the reason for his reckless behavior.
10:21And any Charlie 5 Lima?
10:23Can we just pee and see this person and make sure he hasn't got any conditions not to be with that lady?
10:29Have you got any active restraining orders?
10:31It's her car, but he's insured.
10:39Yeah.
10:40It's just a domestic violence victim.
10:43They're going to check in on her now, mate.
10:44Where's that?
10:45Where's that, Liv?
10:45Yeah, Chesterfield.
10:47So they're sending him on somebody round now.
10:48They're sending him on check on her.
10:50Tango 01 receiving that one, two.
10:52Start recovery for our vehicle, please.
10:54It appears the man is driving his ex-partner's car.
11:01I don't know him.
11:02When he sobers up from whatever he's on, whether he'll just realize ever what he's done when he sees the footage
11:08and how close he's come to killing lots of people, just shocking.
11:12It's completely shameful.
11:14He just belongs in prison.
11:15He's got absolutely no care whatsoever for life of the people.
11:19I'm just very pleased that he's on his way to custody.
11:23I'm glad it's finished.
11:24Yeah, we've come a ride down to the local shop to get an ice finger from the local bakery this morning.
11:29If it was on that pavement at that moment of time, it could have ended really badly.
11:34So what's your name?
11:35Paddy.
11:36You're right.
11:36We've been lucky today.
11:38Yeah, well, we have been lucky.
11:39Thank you for your help.
11:40Can I get a job?
11:42Absolutely, I'll be speaking to my inspector in a bit.
11:49Come on, we'll get you straight in, mate.
11:51All right.
11:52There's going to be no issues, aren't there?
11:54No, no, no, no.
11:54All right, mate.
11:55Cool, come on.
11:56At custody, the suspect is checked in for drink and drug tests.
12:01Pop yourself down on the bench.
12:02We'll give you a seat for a minute, all right?
12:03Yeah, you can take it to the sergeant.
12:05But we'll do it in a minute, yeah?
12:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:07You can come out.
12:08Yeah.
12:09Unsurprisingly, he's tested positive for drink and drugs, which is why he's had multiple collisions on his journey.
12:16It's unbelievably selfish.
12:18And he's got no right to be out in public.
12:21I can't believe it was dead.
12:25He's knocked down a school sign.
12:27I don't know.
12:27I completely wiped it out.
12:28Wiped it out.
12:29That's how fast he was.
12:30I can't believe it.
12:32Go on, keep going.
12:36Keep your lock on.
12:38Put the lock on.
12:39That's it.
12:40Hopefully the police car's not too bad.
12:44There's honestly only a certain amount of cars we've got.
12:47Just not what I was expecting today, but you never know what to expect in this job.
12:54He's been arrested for breach of his restraining order, dangerous driving, failure to stop, assaulting an emergency worker,
13:04suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit for drink and for drugs.
13:11It's not unusual to have jobs like this nowadays, with people being so high on drugs and stuff like that,
13:18that they'll run into others and they'll just carry on driving with one wheel off and things like that.
13:25It's getting more and more common.
13:28People don't realise how dangerous cars are, that they're quite a big weapon, end of the day.
13:33And they do kill, even when you don't mean to.
13:37The suspect will now be charged.
13:40If found guilty, he'll lose his licence for at least a year and faces more jail time.
13:51Coming up.
13:52Vehicle is through a red ATS.
13:55Officers forced to pursue.
13:57Vehicle contravenes a deep left bollard.
14:00They are at a temporary high.
14:02A young driver.
14:04Vehicle stung, vehicle stung.
14:07Refusing to stop.
14:09Vehicle stung again, vehicle stung again.
14:12And putting lives at risk.
14:14Hands behind your back, hands behind your back.
14:16Units for observations for a vehicle, probably as usual in the road like a racetrack.
14:34An exciting start to check call control.
14:36Nice to meet you.
14:37Nice to meet you.
14:37Nice to meet you.
14:37Nice to meet you.
14:38And hey, Oscar Tango 1-4.
14:40I'll make to the area and see if I can intercept this vehicle.
14:43In the centre of Derby, traffic cop Martin Carter is on the lookout for young, reckless drivers.
14:51Just had a call come in to say there's a group of boy racers down at one of the local parks, so we're just going to float towards the area and see if we can find anything untoward.
15:03Each year, more than 1,500 people are killed on UK roads, many due to dangerous driving.
15:12Oh, watch this.
15:13Two people racing in the distance.
15:17I can see two cars quite clearly going a bit over the speed limit and appear to be racing each other.
15:21He's going to make off.
15:23One of the vehicles at Apollo, foot's gone down immediately and he'd off like a rocket.
15:28I'll try and catch up with him.
15:34As one of the cars speeds off, the Polo attempts to lose Martin.
15:44And a Oscar Tango 4-10-12.
15:47I've got a vehicle failing to stop.
15:49Confirm failing to stop.
15:51It's a dark Volkswagen Polo in grey.
15:55Advanced driver, high-performance, fully marked vehicle, T-PAC trained.
16:03Driver is unknown.
16:05Number of occupants, unknown.
16:07Road conditions are dry.
16:09Weather is clear.
16:11Traffic is light.
16:12No pedestrians.
16:14I am declaring this a pursuit and requesting authority to continue.
16:19Form an A, pursuit is authorised.
16:21Keep me up to date with dynamic risk assessment, please.
16:23As Martin pursues the car, other units race to assist.
16:36Vehicle contravenes a keep left bollard, DRA temporary high.
16:41Back to the correct side of the road without incident, DRA drops to medium.
16:46Vehicle continues, 9-0 in a 3-0.
16:49Vehicle is through a red ATS without incident.
16:55We're in Derby city centre.
16:56It's busy.
16:57There's lots of traffic.
16:59There's pedestrians walking around.
17:01This chap's reaching speeds of up to 100 miles an hour in a 40 zone.
17:06This is a properly high-risk pursuit.
17:09Subject vehicle is overtaking other vehicles now.
17:12Vehicle is swerving between vehicles.
17:22DRA increases to medium.
17:25Approaching a red ATS.
17:27DRA temporary high.
17:28Standby.
17:30Three of the red ATS without incident.
17:32DRA drops to below.
17:34Goodness knows what other members of the public must be thinking.
17:37They must be really concerned that there's people like this that think they can use the road as a racetrack.
17:44Speed currently 8-5 in a 4-0.
17:47DRA is medium.
17:50So the plan is to get as many resources flooded to the area as possible.
17:54And hopefully we can sting the vehicle's tyres, which will deflate them and slow him down significantly.
18:01And then we can deploy some other tactics to wrap our cars around his vehicle and bring it to a safe stop.
18:08From an A to all units.
18:10We've run this past top desk.
18:11Stinger at this time is authorised.
18:14Just up ahead, an officer is ready with a stinger.
18:23Vehicle stung.
18:25Vehicle stung.
18:27Vehicle wrong side of the road.
18:28DRA temporary high.
18:30Thankfully for me, there's another local police unit further up the road with another stinger.
18:41Vehicle stung again.
18:42Vehicle stung again.
18:45Vehicle heavy on the brakes.
18:47Standby.
18:47Standby.
18:48The driver's made the decision.
18:50I'm not going to get away.
18:52So I've got to pull over.
18:53Wise choice to make.
18:55Vehicle stopped.
18:56Standby.
18:58Get out!
18:59Hands behind your back!
19:02Hands behind your back!
19:04Don't.
19:05Don't my family walk all of it.
19:13You're under arrest.
19:14Suffice of dangerous driving.
19:15Failure to stop for police.
19:16Yeah.
19:17Okay?
19:17Yeah.
19:19Vehicle stopped driving under arrest.
19:20I've been involved in a number of pursuits and this is one of the worst that I've been involved
19:25in.
19:26A huge sigh of relief but also satisfaction that we've been able to deploy our tactics in the
19:31correct manner and bring this pursuit to a safe conclusion.
19:35What was the reason for that then?
19:38Do you know what it was?
19:38Because I was at that car meet and I thought you guys were going to call me over.
19:41So whose car is this?
19:42It's mine.
19:42It's mine.
19:43Registering insurance here.
19:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:44Guess what, mate?
19:44I'm fully legitimate.
19:45From a ticket, you've posted a prison sentence.
19:47I know, man.
19:48I know.
19:49Do you know what it was?
19:49I was just nervous, man.
19:50Because I was at that car meet.
19:51That's probably why you were there, weren't you?
19:54I'm an idiot, man.
19:55I know.
19:57You got any ID on you?
19:58Yes, I do, mate.
19:59It's in the back of my phone.
20:01Where do you pay?
20:01My phone's in there.
20:02I think we all make bad decisions in our life but that decision was one of the worst decisions
20:07he could possibly have made.
20:09Just come and sit in the back of my car.
20:12I've got insurance held, MOTs in order.
20:15There's no reports on the vehicle.
20:17The vehicle belongs to him.
20:19He's got a full, clean driving licence.
20:21Never been in trouble with the police before.
20:23Fully insured to drive the car.
20:25No issues with the vehicle at all.
20:27So why you take that risk and drive in the manner that he did, you know, it baffles me.
20:35And now he's potentially looking at a prison sentence.
20:38Right, this is sealed.
20:39It's not been used before.
20:41How are you?
20:43Yes, mate.
20:43Oh, you're a prison pal.
20:46Hey?
20:47Yeah, I'm a good one.
20:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:49Nice one, pal.
20:50Big, deep breath.
20:51Nice one.
20:52Nice one.
20:52Keep going, keep going.
20:54Harder, harder, harder.
20:55That's it.
20:57Last time I drug was last night.
20:59I went out last night.
21:00Okay.
21:00That was it.
21:01We're in it.
21:01So blown zero, so no alcohol on your system.
21:03Yeah, I know.
21:03This is a good start.
21:04Right, same rules for the drug wipe.
21:06Yeah.
21:06So, this is a sealed packet.
21:10It's not been used before.
21:11Yeah.
21:12And it tests me if I've never seen cocaine.
21:13So when you're ready, stick your tongue out and I'm going to swipe your tongue nine times,
21:17one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
21:22So worst outcome right now, what's going to happen if you've been straight up with me?
21:32So far, you've been arrested for dangerous driving and failing to stop for the police.
21:37Yeah.
21:38What's the drug sample saying?
21:39There's a clear indication that there's cannabis in your system.
21:42Okay.
21:42So you're further under arrest on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle on a road whilst
21:46over a specified drug limit, or namely cannabis.
21:48Could that not mean because I've had some before?
21:50Yeah, potentially.
21:51Okay.
21:52So just remind you that you're under caution.
21:54You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence.
21:56If you do not, mention when you question something that you're later lying in court,
21:59anything you do say may be given evidence.
22:01Do you understand that?
22:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:02Perfect.
22:03Was it this one that was chasing me?
22:05Yeah.
22:08Is it mapped up or anything?
22:10It's a police spec, yeah.
22:12So what does that mean?
22:13Do you know what it's pushing?
22:14It's fast.
22:15Giving me a hard time, I'll tell you that much.
22:17You know what?
22:17He's a good driver, man.
22:19I was saying it in the car.
22:21I was saying it in the car.
22:22This guy's a driver, man.
22:23Despite the fact it might seem like a compliment, I'd rather not be involved in that type of incident.
22:29He could have killed somebody, could have seriously injured somebody, or he could have killed himself.
22:34And for him, it's just I've been involved in a police chase like he's playing a computer game.
22:40Right, let's get you off to custody.
22:43Mind-boggling.
22:44But that's the sort of person we need to target as a high-risk road user.
22:47Coming up...
22:57We've got two vehicles failing to stop.
23:00A group of teens...
23:01Right, drive it.
23:03Turn your engine off.
23:04...causing chaos on the roads.
23:07So when a police car comes, wait to be right, so what's that mean?
23:09There was a car...
23:10What does that mean?
23:11Yes, sir.
23:12So why didn't you?
23:14And officers searching for the truth.
23:17You have the right to search me, Lord.
23:19Thanks for trying to tell us the law, mate.
23:20We're police officers, mate.
23:21We've been doing it a long time.
23:22In the east of the county...
23:37Tango, who wants zero?
23:39Anyone on here?
23:42Yeah, I'm on here now.
23:44Traffic cop Rich Morris is racing to assist a colleague,
23:47tailing two vehicles driving dangerously.
23:52We've got two vehicles failing to stop.
23:55Some lads are ragging around Morrison's car park.
24:00Advance marks, assume when it's back to the impact.
24:03Fiesta making off as well.
24:06We've got to fail to stop with not one vehicle,
24:08but there's two vehicles involved.
24:11The vehicles making off are a Ford Fiesta and a BMW.
24:16It's around about, not the first, not the first thing, second, second.
24:19So we're making our way over there.
24:23What's the rest of this BMW, mate?
24:25I'm a couple of minutes away.
24:26We're coming to you.
24:28With the risk of a crash high...
24:31Orp, orp.
24:33Having identified the vehicles, the officer pulls back.
24:38He's got both registrations,
24:40so we're looking out all the time for these two vehicles.
24:43We're going to head towards where they know, aren't we?
24:45The team raced to the vehicle's registered addresses.
24:50One seven, can you just turn off your EO blues, mate?
24:55And their instincts pay off.
24:58Tango 01017, where's T6?
25:03Right, driver, turn your engine off.
25:07Jump out the car.
25:08Who's the driver for the BMW?
25:12Who's the driver for the BMW?
25:15Not sure, mate.
25:16Stand there.
25:18I can see both vehicles parked up
25:20and everybody's in the Fiesta and around the Fiesta.
25:24I'm just thinking, well, that's a bit weird.
25:27Officers quiz the lad in the Fiesta's driver's seat.
25:30Why have you failed to stop for the police tonight, then?
25:32Didn't know you, Jason.
25:33Is that what we're playing, is it?
25:35Good job it's all on camera, ain't it?
25:36It needs to be sarcastic, mate.
25:38No need to make off and drive dangerous, is there?
25:39No need to be sarcastic.
25:40Okay.
25:40So when a police car comes, wait, it's blue lights on.
25:43What's that mean?
25:43There was a car behind me.
25:44What does that mean?
25:45To stop.
25:46So why didn't you?
25:48Because I thought you were chasing the other berm.
25:50You went off before him, and you've been in convoy with that...
25:52You can't point your finger in it.
25:55You can't point...
25:56You can't fail to stop, can you?
25:59Don't step towards.
26:00Don't step towards.
26:00Okay.
26:01Guess what?
26:01So you've been in convoy with that BMW all night, haven't you?
26:04I know you have.
26:06Okay.
26:06Driver's license, please.
26:08We're about to have them both, aren't we?
26:09Yeah, they're both probably coming in, mate.
26:11Cars will be getting seized, but...
26:13NA Tango 1-0.
26:15I think we're going to have both of these vehicles failing to stop.
26:18Because it's been involved in a fail to stop,
26:20that activates a 24-hour policy where we can seize those vehicles.
26:26Where's the driver of the BMW?
26:27I'm not sure who's driving it.
26:29I'm not sure who's driving it.
26:30I'm not sure who's driving it.
26:31I'm not sure who's driving it.
26:32Okay.
26:33I'm going to give you all a verbal note of intended prosecution, right?
26:35It's your responsibility now to tell me who the driver of that BMW is.
26:39If you don't, you're all going to get prosecuted for failing to ID the driver.
26:43Oh, we have no idea.
26:45Is the registered keeper of this vehicle?
26:47Are you all going to be arrested?
26:48This one?
26:49No, that BMW.
26:50No, I have no idea who's going to be arrested.
26:53What's your name?
26:54It's a minimum of six points on your line.
26:55What's your name?
26:56I just wanted to know who you are.
26:58You know who was driving it.
26:59So you need to tell us who was driving it.
27:01I want ID off all of you, please.
27:04Why are you shaking, sir?
27:05Don't be scared, mate.
27:07Don't be scared.
27:08Don't be scared of it.
27:09I ain't scared.
27:10You look scared.
27:11You look at it.
27:12Don't be scared, mate.
27:13I ain't scared, Paul.
27:14Good.
27:15Good.
27:17Right, in a second, we're going to search your section on the pace for the keys for that BMW.
27:22So if you've got the keys on you now, whoever's got the keys, I suggest you own up to it now.
27:27The chances are the person with the keys on them was the person that was driving, isn't it?
27:31My guess it's you in the back there, dude.
27:34I guess so.
27:34I've done nothing, man.
27:36Are you ever known to police still?
27:38I'm not.
27:38How old are you?
27:40I'm 17.
27:4117?
27:42So if we search you then, are you going to have that BMW key on you, pal?
27:46Do you have the right to search me, though?
27:47Yeah, we do.
27:48Sexual order pays.
27:48Thanks for trying to tell us the law, mate.
27:50Are you a police officer or a solicitor?
27:52We're a police officer, mate.
27:53You've been doing it a long time.
27:54I don't know whose car that is, though, unfortunately.
27:56So you've got no idea who it is?
27:58Right.
27:59I have no idea.
28:00Okay.
28:01We've got work in the morning.
28:01Hello, Sarge.
28:02Well, we've all got jobs to do, haven't we?
28:05Step out, we'll do.
28:06So we've got here, we've found both the cars that are made off, parked up.
28:11I'm sitting in the back of my car, mate.
28:13Four lads in the Fiesta.
28:16Nobody in the BMW.
28:18So we're just getting them all split up and establishing who is the driver of the two vehicles.
28:24The object in the search is for a set of keys, only for a BMW.
28:28Okay.
28:28Okay?
28:29Okay.
28:29Can you just unzip your, would you, eh?
28:31Cool.
28:32Just spread your arms out.
28:33You've got anything you shouldn't have, isn't it?
28:35Nothing at all.
28:36What's got in the pockets, I'm about?
28:37Nothing, just one side of them, are they?
28:39You can put everything out to the top of here, look.
28:41You just keep your hands away from the pockets.
28:42Right, don't fiddle with that pocket, mate.
28:43Where are you going with that one?
28:44That's a forward one.
28:45That's a forward one.
28:47That's a forward key, yeah.
28:53It's sharp on your target.
28:55After the searches...
28:57Right, come and sit in my car.
28:59Just jump in there.
29:02The young men are questioned separately.
29:05Have they all been searched, Neil?
29:07Yeah.
29:07Have we found the car key?
29:08No.
29:10Right, so what's the crowd then to now?
29:12What's been going on?
29:13Nothing.
29:13I've just been in my mate's car.
29:15I've been in my car for the Ford.
29:17Was you in it when it drove off?
29:19No.
29:21Where was you?
29:24I don't know.
29:25In where?
29:28I was in the Ford.
29:31Where's the driver, that BMW?
29:32I don't know.
29:34That Fiesta, that BMW, have been in convoy all night tonight.
29:41When my colleagues have tried to stop, you lot being idiots at Morrisons, you have both
29:47driven off and failed to stop for police tonight.
29:50Are you with me so far?
29:52Yeah.
29:52And guess what?
29:54Both those vehicles have been found here tonight.
29:57With all of you in one vehicle, both of you parked up together.
30:01Are you with me so far?
30:03So the chances are, the person that was driving that BMW is sat in that Fiesta.
30:10That's why you're all parked up here, doing whatever you young lads do together.
30:14What you do there is your business, but it's not very realistic that you lot have been
30:20traveling around all night together, and that you're not going to know who the driver
30:25that BMW is.
30:27Why have I done that to leave?
30:29Because you're not saying who the driver that is.
30:31No.
30:32Well, I suspect that you may have.
30:34Yeah, I can.
30:35Watch me.
30:36Watch me.
30:37I agree.
30:38You're having a laugh about it.
30:39You don't care.
30:40You will do.
30:40When you're not able to drive, you're never able to get insurance, because insurance
30:44is lucky.
30:45You say, no, high-risk road user, pal.
30:47You're not driving.
30:49The Fiesta is also searched, but there's no sign of the BMW's keys.
30:55And that's the Tango 14.
30:57As for the BMW, who's it registered and insured to you, please?
31:01Registered and insured with, I think it's his mom as a new driver, and it's provisional
31:06time only.
31:07Yeah, roger.
31:08The BMW's actually registered to one of the lads' mothers.
31:14So you're 17, aren't you?
31:15Yeah.
31:16Which means we will have to inform your parent that you have been stop-searched.
31:19Yeah.
31:19Right?
31:20So, mum or dad, no matter.
31:22Mum.
31:23Hello, sorry to bother you so late.
31:25I'm with, I believe, your son, your 17-year-old.
31:28Is he about six foot tall, slim build, tends to wear a white hoodie?
31:32Right, that clears a lot of things up.
31:37He's 19, so he's actually an adult.
31:39Your son is safe and well, but I think he'll be coming with us for a little while.
31:43But he's giving me some false details.
31:44Take care.
31:45He's pretended to be his younger brother rather than actually him.
31:50So, I'm thinking, he's clearly got something to hide.
31:54Why would you be lying if you've done nothing wrong?
31:56Right.
31:57You are now under arrest.
31:58Failed to stop.
31:59Dangerous drive.
32:00And obstruct police.
32:01Because you gave me false details.
32:02You're established who you are, right?
32:04All right.
32:04So I'm going to ask you now, before we seize your car, because we're going to seize it
32:07anyway, before we drag it on a ramp, all right, and knacker it up, have you got the
32:11keys to it?
32:11No.
32:11Right, I've asked you the question, it's knackered now, I've asked you that question.
32:15Yeah, I don't have the keys for that car.
32:17I don't have them.
32:17Well, I'm happy you're the driver.
32:19I was in my mate's car the entire time.
32:21Right.
32:22I have not drove that car.
32:23Right, but do you know who owns the Beamer?
32:26Yeah, who owns the Beamer?
32:27Yeah.
32:28The vehicle belongs to me, but I've not drove that.
32:31Where are the keys for it?
32:32I don't know.
32:32I don't know.
32:33I haven't drove that.
32:34So somebody who you don't know has got keys to your vehicle?
32:38I've not drove that.
32:39That is my car.
32:40You can't be stolen.
32:40I was in the back of my mate's car.
32:41Why do you think we're here?
32:42Because we've seen that there.
32:44Right.
32:45The lad in the white hoodie, his nose should be growing as big as Pinocchio's because he
32:51comes up with a story that somebody else has been driving it, he doesn't know who, and
32:55they've just found it there.
32:57And thinking that we're going to buy that story is unbelievable.
33:01Have you ever been arrested before?
33:02No, I haven't.
33:02Right.
33:03Let's get down to custody.
33:04It's about getting you interviewed in the morning.
33:06I've got work in the mood.
33:07Well, I'm afraid that's going to go on the back burner, mate, because you're going to
33:10be at St Mary's off-custody.
33:12I've seen more death on the roads than you could ever imagine me.
33:15You're just another statistic waiting to happen.
33:18That's all you are.
33:19I've got kids older than you, pal.
33:21Though I just hope you'll learn something from tonight.
33:23The two passengers are released without charge.
33:29We've ended up identifying who we suspect the driver of the BMW is.
33:33So, he's in the traps.
33:36The other driver's been given a traffic defense report and sent on his way.
33:41We've recovered both the vehicles on the Section 165.
33:44It's going to cost them both quite a few quid to get their vehicles back.
33:49Points and fines incoming.
33:50The frustrating thing about this is they're all young 18, 19-year-old kids.
33:56And statistically, a lot of young lads end up getting seriously injured or dying in serious
34:02road traffic collisions because it's all about testosterone.
34:06They watch too much Need for Speed, Too Fast, Too Furious, whatever they call it nowadays.
34:11And they all think they can drive like that.
34:13And the fact is they can't.
34:14They run out of skill long before that.
34:16But we've tried and that's all we can do.
34:21More than a third of dangerous driving offenses involve young drivers aged between 17 and 25.
34:29These are high-risk road users.
34:33If they're willing to act like that at that age, then I don't think they've got a very long legal driving career ahead of them.
34:41And they want to hope that their insurance companies aren't watching because their premiums might be going up again.
34:49Because if I own an insurance company, I won't want to be wanting to insure idiots like that.
34:57Coming up.
34:58I've seen two white vehicles go flying past.
35:01More dangerous behavior.
35:04Bit of a rush, lad.
35:05As another young driver.
35:07Not learning, are you?
35:08Is caught in the act.
35:11Are you idiots like you driving like that through a car park who's been told three times and still hasn't learned?
35:18Yeah?
35:19Just so you can show off in front of all your mates.
35:21Traffic cop Craig Dawes
35:41Got opposite way now, so it doesn't matter.
35:45Is heading to a supermarket car park.
35:47A known hotspot for boy races and dangerous driving.
35:52What makes boy races so dangerous is they have no sense of fear.
35:56And they don't see the risks.
35:58They don't see the consequences.
36:00So tonight we're making his way up there because with experience we know that it's a nice night.
36:06And we'll probably be meeting up there to show off the cars.
36:12As I pull into the car park, two white vehicles go flying past.
36:18One of them, lucky for him, sees me where the other one clearly doesn't and continues to drive in an antisocial manner and speeds past the lorry towards the main road.
36:30I'm annoyed straight away because these are the kind of people that's going to, you know, possibly crash into my family or somebody else that's going about the daily business, doing the shopping.
36:41Total disregard for anybody else's safety, just intent on showing off.
36:45An eight, two, three, ten, fifteen, please.
36:48Tesco's, lock the load.
36:50Not the ideal speed of going through a car park, is it?
37:07You got your driving licence on, yeah?
37:09Any else can I get two, three?
37:11Just create my job for a section 59 warning, please.
37:14A section 59 is a power that the police have for anybody that's driving in an antisocial manner and causing annoyance to other road users.
37:22Do you know what a section 59 warning is?
37:24Yeah, I've asked.
37:25Oh, how long?
37:28Not long. I've only had to take long.
37:30Not learning, are you?
37:32So, people like you is the people we have to go and scrape off the roads.
37:36Driving like an idiot through Tesco's car park.
37:38You've already had one 59, that's clearly not bothered you.
37:41Then you've had again, and that's not bothered you.
37:44You still go down to where these antisocial car meets are.
37:47And you want to be Lewis Hamilton, or Max Verstappen.
37:50So, yeah, mate, it does really pee me off that people like yourselves don't learn and put other people at risk.
37:56Even possibly my family.
37:58Yeah?
37:59Because all families go to Tesco's and so on, don't they?
38:02What happens if a family's coming out of Tesco's and we're a kid and it runs out?
38:05You go and clean them up.
38:07And then it's death by dangerous.
38:10And you get idiots like you driving like that through a car park,
38:12who's been told three times and still hasn't learned.
38:17Yeah?
38:18Just so you can show off in front of all your mates.
38:22So this time, we'll have a due care as well.
38:25Put some points on your license, shall we?
38:28Come take a seat in my car.
38:30Turn your engine off.
38:31You'll need all the money you can.
38:32When I find out that it's his third strike, you know, that then really does anger me because it's clearly not taking on board what's being said.
38:43These people are 17, 18-year-old driving high-powered cars for a very, very short time.
38:49And in simple terms, they're an accident waiting to happen.
38:54I spend quite a lot of time down there at Tesco's.
38:57You used to happen to come past at the wrong time, didn't you?
38:59And I bet your heart sank when you saw me behind you, didn't it?
39:04Or don't you care?
39:05It happens every day, does it?
39:08Why does it happen every day?
39:09No, no, no, because 10 other cars went past me and I never bothered with them, did I?
39:18Because they were driving quite normally out of the car park.
39:21But obviously, you giving it the billy big, you and your mate, that's what gets me attention.
39:27Do you know what?
39:27Your attitude is absolutely shocking.
39:30It concerns me with attitude.
39:33But my other concern is that, you know, when you do crash, which I should probably put money on is going to happen.
39:39It'll be some innocent person or some innocent family that you take out.
39:43Because that's what happens with people like yourself, isn't it?
39:46Cocky and carefree.
39:48And then I have to go and knock on the door and tell them that somebody's loved ones have been killed or seriously injured.
39:53Because somebody like you has injured them or killed them.
39:58Somebody like you, who you're at here, don't even deserve to have a car.
40:02Me and you are going to get to know each other very, very well.
40:04Because I'll be looking out for you all the time.
40:06Now, you know, the slightest time you step out of line, I'll be banging another point on your licence.
40:12To a point, I'll get your licence took off you.
40:15Because I don't think it'll be hard.
40:17But you know, if I get your licence took off you, hopefully I've then prevented somebody innocent being injured or killed.
40:23That's my aim.
40:24Because that's why I do this job.
40:26Right?
40:26So I'm going to say, you're going to be reported for consideration of prosecuting for the offence of driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or a public place without due care and attention.
40:39Do you understand that?
40:41You don't have to say anything.
40:42It may harm your defence.
40:43If you do not mention now, something that's later on in court, anything you do say may be used in evidence.
40:46Do you understand that?
40:47The fine is £100 and three points on your licence.
40:51Do you know what happens if you get six points in the first two years?
40:56Yep.
40:57So you only need one more strike, don't you?
41:00And one mistake, you could go to prison.
41:02One mistake, you could kill somebody.
41:04You've got to learn from it.
41:05That's all I want, is you to learn from it.
41:08OK?
41:09But it's all about choices.
41:11And what choice you make after that.
41:13And at the moment, you've not learnt from their mistakes.
41:15The young man is charged with driving without due care and attention.
41:22After breaking the terms of his previous warnings, his car will now be seized.
41:30Right, you're free to go, mate.
41:31You're free to wait.
41:32My dad's coming here to pick up.
41:34He's coming here to pick up.
41:40That's my dad.
41:41That's your dad?
41:42Well, I can see it runs in the family then, doesn't it?
41:46He's showing off in front of your mates, isn't he?
41:49That's clearly what he's doing.
41:50He's at a car meet where they're all driving in an antisocial manner.
41:55And that's why we're down there.
41:56We get so many calls down to Tesco's.
41:58And that's one of the reasons that we're there.
42:00Every year, nearly 30,000 people are killed or seriously injured on the UK's roads.
42:15Many the result of dangerous driving.
42:17One of my mates hates these dangerous drivers.
42:22They just totally don't care and show disregard to everybody else.
42:25It's always an innocent person that gets injured.
42:28You know, they're the ones that suffer the most.
42:30The trouble is, drivers that we deem to be dangerous won't get it until they lose an arm,
42:35until they lose a leg.
42:36That's the only way some of them will learn.
42:38Or the parents are there crying over them because they're not coming home again.
42:43Our job is to address that threat and risk that's constantly posed by these sorts of dangerous drivers.
42:48In this episode...
42:54It appeared that the vehicle is only on three wheels.
