00:00I heard of it.
00:30Good evening.
00:42Good evening, this is Gary Moore.
00:45Welcome to a special Halloween edition of I've Got a Secret.
00:55I've Got a Secret.
01:00Thank you, this is something for the kiddies' night, as you can gather.
01:14It is very nice to have you with us on a very spooky edition of I've Got a Secret,
01:18where anything is likely to happen.
01:20First, I would like to have you meet our panel.
01:23To begin with, there is Bill Cullen.
01:25And then, Jane Meadows.
01:34And next, Henry Morgan.
01:39And Faye Emerson.
01:42That is our I've Got a Secret panel.
01:45Are they great?
01:57I love them.
01:58We are very indebted to Mr. Pat Morella of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who is in our audience tonight.
02:03And he carved these wonderful caricatures for us out of real pumpkins.
02:07Let's take a picture of Mr. Morella.
02:08Thanks a million, Mr. Morella.
02:10All right, now, panel, are we all set to play the game, huh?
02:19Yes.
02:19No.
02:20All right, then let's have our first contestant come in, please.
02:22First contestant.
02:32Oh, well, in that event, then, may we have our second contestant, please.
02:40Will you tell our panel, please, what your name is and where you're from?
02:49John Francis from Merchantville, New Jersey.
02:52This is Mr. Francis, and he is from Merchantville, New Jersey.
02:56Now, Mr. Francis, here is how the game is played.
02:58Each panelist will get 15 seconds of questioning time, at the end of which you will hear this sound.
03:02Which signifies that that panelist's turn is up, and we go on to another one.
03:12Once around the panel for a total loss of $80, then the game is over.
03:15We will pay you $20 in blood money for each question that they mark.
03:19Now, Mr. Francis, if you will whisper your secret to me, the folks at home would like to know what it is.
03:23Yes.
03:28No.
03:38Well, panel, to help classify Mr. Francis' secret, I will tell you a concern, something that he did, and Bill Cullen, we'll start with you, old boy.
03:44Uh, Mr. Francis, is that right?
03:47Yes.
03:47That's right.
03:48I haven't been able to concentrate with all the noises going on.
03:51This thing that you did, Mr. Francis, is it something appropriate for such an occasion as Halloween?
03:57I don't think so.
03:59Well, I would say having the secret on tonight would be appropriate for Halloween.
04:03Well, was it something that we can consider appropriately gruesome, then, for Halloween?
04:09Yeah.
04:09Well, this is just a wild guess, but are you the man who stabbed our first contestant?
04:17No, sir.
04:18Are you going to stab our third contestant?
04:20I will not.
04:21Was there any blood involved, as they say at the prize fight?
04:27Yes.
04:31Your blood?
04:33Thank your pardon?
04:35Your blood?
04:36No, not my blood.
04:37Not John's blood.
04:38No.
04:40Well, I think I'm safe, then, in assuming it was someone else's blood.
04:43Yeah.
04:44That's telethinking.
04:44Good thinking.
04:45Was a knife at all used in this, uh, or sharp instrument?
04:50Not necessarily a knife, eh?
04:52Yeah.
04:52Sharp instrument?
04:53Yeah, that, yeah, sure.
04:54Uh, well, if you didn't do this in a hospital, I'm going to pass.
04:57Did you do this in a hospital?
04:59No, I didn't.
04:59I pass.
05:00I, uh, I, uh...
05:02All right, your time is up.
05:04There's $20 down and $60 to go, and we go on to Jane Meadows, please.
05:08Mr. Francis, are you by any chance playing a joke on us, or do you really have a secret?
05:12Oh, no, I really have a secret.
05:14Doesn't he look like he has a secret?
05:15Did you do something gruesome to something?
05:17I did.
05:18Is this, by any chance, some strange animal connected with Halloween?
05:25No, no.
05:26Well, you said something about blood.
05:28Did some vicious animal attack you?
05:30No.
05:31Then may I assume that this animal is human?
05:34Yes.
05:35Good.
05:36Um, the animal is human.
05:38Is it, by any chance, your secret not as horrible as you're making it out?
05:44No, it's not as horrible as I'm making it out.
05:46Oh, then I might assume that I might do this if I had the opportunity.
05:50All right.
05:54Uh, we're going to give you a no on that.
05:57We think not.
05:58No.
05:59Now then...
05:59Sorry, Jane, your time's up.
06:07$40 down and $40 to go, and we go on to Henry Morgan, please.
06:11Oh, is that the way we know when I find it?
06:12Huh?
06:13Oh, sure.
06:14Oh.
06:15Um, I find a peculiar lack of interest in this, but I'll go on with it.
06:23That's right.
06:29Good evening.
06:32All right, I'll play the game.
06:38I'll play the game.
06:39Um, oh, I'll play.
06:41Uh, sir, uh, this thing that you did, uh, was it done to your wife?
06:45No!
06:45Uh, a relative?
06:47Uh, I'll play, Gary.
06:48I'll play it.
06:49Uh, with this?
06:51I'm afraid your time is up, and I'm glad, Henry.
06:54That wasn't supposed to happen.
06:55I didn't think you'd take it so hard.
06:57$60 down and $80 to go.
06:59Yes, Bill?
07:01Hop along.
07:04Hop along, Cassidy.
07:06Well, Bill, on this show, you have to give an arm and a leg.
07:09All right, we go on to Faye.
07:10Faye, we have established that this involved a sharp instrument.
07:13It involved blood.
07:14Someone's else.
07:16And, uh...
07:17If we're still on the air, I'd be happy to do what I can.
07:20All right, thank you.
07:21I got a little nervous when that spider came in, and I'm afraid I said a word which may have
07:24offended some people, but you'd have said it, too, if you'd been here.
07:27Didn't hear it.
07:28Thank goodness.
07:31Well, now...
07:31The word with intern...
07:32Sir, did this have anything to do with, in a medical sense?
07:36In a medical sense?
07:37Are you a doctor or an intern or in any way related to, uh, the medical family?
07:41No, I'm not.
07:43Oh, dear.
07:44Uh, you're not related to the kind of people who put people away when they've finally
07:48gotten to the long, last sleep?
07:50No.
07:52Your time is up two feet.
07:54I'm so glad.
07:54Well, I'm done in defeat.
07:55Eighty dollars down to the gentleman.
07:57Jane, this concerns...
07:59This would be of special interest to you.
08:00When your husband, Steve, was playing in Philadelphia two years ago in a play called The Pink Elephant,
08:05he dashed across the street, and he asked Mr. Francis to give him an extremely quick shave.
08:09Steve, the rush was so great that Mr. Francis, who runs a barbershop called Jerry and...
08:15John and Jerry.
08:16John and Jerry.
08:17On Wallen Street.
08:17On Wallen Street.
08:18They...
08:19Steve, you know how nervous he is.
08:20Yeah.
08:20Steve didn't sit still in the chair, and he jumped, and inadvertently, Mr. Francis cut Steve's throat.
08:25Steve, you...
08:27But they...
08:28Yeah!
08:32Good kicker.
08:35Managed to get him patched up in time to get back on the stage.
08:38So, Mr. Francis, it's been a joy having you with us tonight.
08:40I'm reaching for your carton of Winston cigarettes.
08:42There are your Winstons.
08:43Thank you, John.
08:43There's the money that you've been with us.
08:45You won.
08:45Thank you very much for being with us.
08:47Good night.
08:48Good night.
08:48Nice to see you.
08:56Women have struck...
08:57Now, panel, I'm going to ask each of you to take your blindfolds, which you'll find in front of you,
09:01and if you will go offstage to the soundproof booth,
09:04we will have our production assistant come back in,
09:07lead you back in when the time seems necessary, okay?
09:10Now, friends, I would like to introduce tonight's guest to you.
09:13Of all the programs on television,
09:15the one that is most appropriate to Halloween is a show called Beat the Clock,
09:19because every Saturday night for the last seven years,
09:21they have been doing Halloween-style stunts on the air.
09:25The master of ceremonies of the show, as it happens,
09:27is a very good friend of mine, and certainly a very good friend of yours.
09:30Let's give a warm welcome to Bud Collier.
09:34All right.
09:41I like your furniture.
09:42Isn't it dandy?
09:43Lovely, yeah.
09:44Early CBS problem.
09:45What is your secret tonight, Bud?
09:48They're all hidden away so they can't hear me, huh?
09:50I'm gone, yes.
09:51Well, I thought maybe my secret might be that I would try out some of the stunts
09:56that, if they prove good, we might use on the show next Saturday night.
10:01You mean if our panel lives through the stunts you're going to try tonight,
10:04and you like them, you may use them on this coming Saturday night?
10:07Yeah.
10:07We test all stunts first anyway,
10:08to make sure that they're not dangerous or harmful.
10:10So if they prove to be not dangerous or harmful,
10:12of course, if they prove dangerous, we won't use them.
10:15We'll bury them.
10:15That's right.
10:16Well, sure.
10:17All right, then let's send the guinea pigs back into the studio.
10:19Our production assistant will lead them back into their places at the panel desk.
10:24And take it easy, panel,
10:25because there are lots of wires hanging around tonight
10:27and special trick effects,
10:28and we don't want you to bump into anything and break your neck.
10:30Production assistant,
10:32here they come.
10:32Okay, lead them in, please.
10:37Come on.
10:38Old friends.
10:49This is one of our better-looking production assistants.
10:53The ugly ones didn't make it tonight.
10:55All right, panel, everybody got a seat?
10:57Why?
10:57No.
10:58Wait a minute.
10:58Okay, get on your crates there, friends.
11:00Oh!
11:02There you are.
11:04Faisy, have a seat.
11:05What's that?
11:06Now you all can take off your blindfolds and see who led you in.
11:09Yeah, wait a minute.
11:10Wait a minute.
11:10Where's my seat?
11:11Oh, my God.
11:12Carrie!
11:14Carrie, man!
11:16Can we take the blindfold off?
11:18Then you're good.
11:23Matter of fact, it is, but I'm not going to tell you who it is.
11:28All right, now, Bud,
11:30let you go to work.
11:32Now, this concerns something...
11:33Bud is not.
11:35Oh, didn't you know Bud is not?
11:36It's only Bud.
11:37I hid back there.
11:38I didn't talk to anybody.
11:39I just...
11:39Well, Pam, this concerns something that Bud is going to do,
11:43and Faye, I think we'll start with you.
11:44Bud?
11:45Yes.
11:46Oh, friend, is it something to do with Halloween?
11:49Hey, where's your other arm, kid?
11:57That's what fell down earlier in the evening.
11:59That's a new look.
12:01I want to say I enjoyed your album, Music for Swinging Lovers.
12:06One-armed Elvis.
12:07Do I get answers from Bud?
12:09Uh, let me see.
12:15That means your time is up.
12:18$20 down, $60 to go, and we go to Bill Cullen, please.
12:21Well, you know, Bud, hearing that scream there
12:23sort of gives your secret away to me.
12:26Hearing that scream and the other screams we have,
12:28you have some contestants left over from Beat the Clock
12:30that you brought with you.
12:31Is that it?
12:32Those are the only ones that are still screaming.
12:35Either that or our office is casting.
12:43You and me.
12:46$40 down, $40 to go, so we go to James.
12:49I would have jumped, but I died there.
12:54Oh, please, let's get to his secret.
12:56What's going to happen next?
12:58Uh, I don't even know the category.
13:00What is the category?
13:01It's something that he's going to do.
13:02Something you're going to do.
13:04Um...
13:04Bud, does it have anything to do with all these horrible things
13:10that are happening right now?
13:11Um, yes.
13:13$60 down, $20 to go.
13:15That's what you were over.
13:16$60 down, $20 to go, and we go to Henry Morgan, please.
13:20I ain't scared.
13:22This thing you're going to do, is it connected with, uh, Halloween?
13:26That was the first question.
13:27In a way.
13:28Well, I liked it, and I thought I'd use it again.
13:30In a way, Henry.
13:31Is it, uh, going to affect anybody on the panel?
13:34I hope so.
13:35Going to be a boy?
13:37No.
13:40We have lost, again, $80 down and nothing to go,
13:44so Bud Collier, if you'll take the hand microphone
13:46and explain to our panel what it is that you're going to do,
13:48it's all yours from here on in.
13:49Okay, thanks, Gary.
13:50What we have to do every week, as you probably know,
13:52in doing our beat-the-clock stunts,
13:54is try them out on people
13:55to make sure that they're not dangerous or harmful.
13:58So we have some that we're scheduling
14:00for our tryout period.
14:02Don't leave, Faye.
14:03Come on, kid.
14:04For our tryout period.
14:05And so we thought we'd try just a few of them on you tonight.
14:08Okay?
14:09Well, buddy.
14:09Well, thought you'd like it, Bill.
14:11All righty.
14:12Okay, now the first one
14:14is one we're actually using on the show now,
14:16and I don't know if you watched it,
14:17but this is our new bonus stunt
14:18that's run several weeks now
14:20and happens to be worth, at the moment, $11,000.
14:23So, Bill, I'm going to ask you to come out here
14:25and try this, if you will.
14:26And believe me, I want to play fair with you.
14:27Do I get this?
14:28I want to tell you that if you get this,
14:30within the time that we're going to allot you,
14:31have a little special clock in the back of us,
14:33dear, see, moving in there.
14:34Yeah, $11,000.
14:35$11,000.
14:35I will guarantee to pay you the entire $0.11 myself.
14:39Now, all you have to do...
14:40All you have to do...
14:42That's the butt I've always known, you know.
14:44This is an 18-inch ruler, you see?
14:46And here's a cup and here's a ball,
14:48both hung on strings.
14:49Now, what you have to do, of course,
14:50is swing the cup over
14:51and try to drop the ball down in the cup, you see?
14:53Oh, oh, well.
14:53And to show you that it will go in there
14:55and will stay there,
14:56I'll just drop it in there like that
14:57and show you.
14:58It will stay.
14:58All you got to do now, let's take it...
14:59Can I do it the way you did it?
15:00No, you can't.
15:01No, you have to do it without touching it
15:03with the other...
15:03And without letting it touch your body.
15:05Now, have 30 seconds, 35 seconds,
15:07and the time I say go.
15:08Are you ready, Bill?
15:09$11,000.
15:09$11,000.
15:10Are you ready?
15:11All right, I'm ready.
15:12Go.
15:13Go on there, Willie.
15:15Use your elbow.
15:16Huh?
15:17No, you can't use your body at all.
15:18That's the trouble.
15:18I used my elbow before I got here.
15:28Don't beat it.
15:29In there, old boy.
15:30Don't beat it, as Henry says.
15:33Very good, Bill.
15:34Hey, you almost got it, then.
15:35Cheat.
15:36Cheat, Bill.
15:36What hand?
15:39What hand?
15:51That's it?
15:53I'm going out to the table.
15:57Oh, boy.
15:59Somebody in the audience has a souvenir, at least.
16:02You got the ball.
16:03Keep it in practices, and come on, beat the clock.
16:05See how wet you do.
16:06Now, what can we do with you?
16:08Miss Jane.
16:10She likes spiders.
16:12She does.
16:12I don't mind spiders.
16:14Oh.
16:14Just snakes, Bob.
16:15Snakes.
16:16Bring it.
16:17No, come on out here.
16:18Yeah, go ahead, snakes.
16:18And I wonder, would you get, yeah, would you please?
16:21It doesn't have anything to do with snakes.
16:22No, it hasn't.
16:23Not a thing to do with snakes.
16:25You just stand right here alongside of me.
16:26Thank you very much, Roxanne.
16:32This is a football helmet, Jane, and here are three sticks sticking out from it.
16:35From strings hanging down there, there are three marshmallows.
16:37Yeah.
16:37I'm going to ask you to put the football helmet on.
16:39I'll try not to disturb that pretty hair.
16:41And keep it pretty well forward, because otherwise the strings won't reach.
16:44Now, without...
16:44Do I have to get those marshmallows in my mouth?
16:45That's right.
16:46All three of them.
16:47Without touching them with your hand.
16:48Okay.
16:48Are you ready?
16:49Uh, undo it, yeah.
16:50Oh, I don't get to get two at a time, are you?
16:52All right, I'll let you do it.
16:53All right, two more now.
16:55Two more.
16:59Okay, fine.
17:00Be dead.
17:03Go, go, go, go, go.
17:05You got it, girl.
17:14Oh, I'm afraid we did a job when you're here.
17:24Okay.
17:25All right.
17:26Wow, we really...
17:28The next one, actually, you want to go to this one right now, do you?
17:31See, that's too bad.
17:31We haven't got time for another one.
17:33We have Gary's I want.
17:34I want Gary's now.
17:35Do you want Gary's now?
17:36Yeah, Gary.
17:36I'll get one for you, Gary.
17:38Yeah, sure.
17:39So, I tell you, bring out the whipped cream, will you?
17:42The whipped cream?
17:43Oh, there is one?
17:44Oh, all right.
17:45Then bring out the other little gimmick there.
17:46Bring it right on out here.
17:47I'll come back here and get it.
17:48You got it here, Handic?
17:49Fine.
17:50All right.
17:50Now, here, Gary, here is a little board that we put a whole lot of tacks in, you see?
17:54Yeah.
17:55Now, all we want you to do, I'm going to place that right down there on the stage.
17:57Yeah.
17:57And all you have to do is take the pillowcase, there are balloons in there, and just beat
18:01him to death until you break all the balloons.
18:02You got the idea?
18:03Sounds easy.
18:04Okay.
18:04And you've got plenty of time, about 45, 50 seconds to do it.
18:07Are you ready?
18:08Yeah.
18:08No, you're not.
18:09Wait a minute.
18:09He's not ready, fellas.
18:10My golly, I knew something was wrong here.
18:12Of course, you're not ready.
18:14Hey.
18:16Get him up, boys.
18:17Go.
18:25That's it.
18:26You're doing fine, Gary.
18:28That's the boy.
18:29Come on.
18:30He's unfounded.
18:32One more.
18:32Oh, God.
18:33Oh, boy.
18:37Now, we've got a couple stunts.
18:44We're going to ask Henry and Faye, do you mind stepping out here for just a minute?
18:47Oh, boy.
18:47I think you're going to have fun with this one.
18:49You're going to step on out here.
18:50Don't try, Henry.
18:51Just don't try to get me now.
18:52Okay.
18:54Hi, boy.
18:55Gee, it's been a long time.
18:56Now, here is a pair of...
18:57Would you mind taking your jacket off?
18:58Maybe Bill will hang on to it for you, huh?
19:01Here's a pair of...
19:01I think they're big enough for you.
19:03I don't know.
19:04In any event, here's a pair of men's pants.
19:08Here is a man's...
19:09Don't put them on yet.
19:10Man's vest.
19:11And here is a man's coat.
19:14You see?
19:15Yes.
19:15Now, I want you...
19:17I want you to help him, Faye, if you will.
19:20Just as though you were a couple doing a couple stun on Beat the Clock, you see?
19:23And I want you to get him in the coat, the vest, and the pants.
19:25You help each other.
19:26Get him in within a minute, and we'll stop the clock, and you'll beat the clock.
19:29That's all there is to it.
19:30There's no problem.
19:30No problem at all.
19:31We're going to make it a problem, though, by asking you first, Faye, to put on this pair of boxing gloves.
19:35If you will, please.
19:37You miserable butt.
19:39And if you'll put this pair of boxing gloves on you, if you don't mind...
19:42Can we get $11,000?
19:44Here, slide your hand in there.
19:46That's a good one.
19:48Okay.
19:48Here, let me help you there, huh?
19:49Will I?
19:50Hold this one for you.
19:52Slide right in there.
19:54That's the boy.
19:55Okay.
19:55Now, you understand what you have to do?
19:57They're kind of...
19:57That's a good one.
19:59It's a good one.
19:59But get him in those clothes within a lot of time, and we stop the clock, and you'll beat the clock.
20:03Now, are you ready?
20:04How much time do we have?
20:04Are you all set?
20:05About a minute.
20:06About a minute.
20:06No.
20:06We'll give you a whole minute.
20:07Okay.
20:07Are you ready?
20:08No, wait a minute.
20:08You're not ready.
20:09For heaven's sake, I nearly forgot something.
20:11I'm going to blindfold each other.
20:13All right.
20:15I'm going to put the pants in there.
20:16All right.
20:17Would you please care?
20:18All right.
20:18Slide it down.
20:19You can't see a thing.
20:20Can't see anything at all?
20:21Okay.
20:23All right.
20:23Now, remember.
20:24Pants, coat, and vests are on a pile right in front of you.
20:26Are you ready?
20:27Go.
20:32Go.
20:33Please.
20:33Go.
20:34Tell him.
20:34No, no, no.
20:35Where are you?
20:37What did you say, Faze?
20:55I got my pants on it.
21:07Bill, where are you?
21:33Oh, boy.
21:44Oh, boy.
21:47Well, I think...
21:49I think this is a harmless stunt.
21:52We know that.
21:53We can go ahead and use it again.
21:55Oh, boy.
21:56Thanks a million, boy.
21:57Here's the money.
21:58Here's your carton of Winston.
22:00All right, thank you, Gary.
22:01It just so happens one of our I've Got A Secret games, which we thought you might take home
22:05to your kids.
22:06Well, how nice.
22:07Hey, do you know something, Gary?
22:08Just by the sheerest chance, I'd like to give you one of our Beat the Clock games.
22:12Take it home to your kids, if you will, please.
22:14Oh, my God.
22:16There you are.
22:17Thanks, bud.
22:22All right, panel, we've got time for a quick closing question on this Halloween night.
22:25What in all this wide world frightens you most?
22:28Bill Cullen?
22:29Uh, bumblebees, Gary.
22:31Good night.
22:32Jane?
22:33Snake.
22:34Good night.
22:35Henry, what frightens you most?
22:37Poverty.
22:40Mary?
22:41Complacency and intolerance.
22:43Good night.
22:44I have no candle to blow out.
22:46I would say if anything frightens me most, lots of things frighten me.
22:48I think, however, if you'll tear the mask off, whatever it is that frightens you, you'll
22:51find pretty much like I do, that it's yourself.
22:54So, I guess that does us in.
22:55It's been a wild night.
22:56Thank you very much, panel, for all your cooperation.
22:58And so, friends, until next week at this time, if we make it after tonight, this will
23:03be Gary Morris saying bye-bye for all of us.
23:06Be very kind to each other, will you?
23:08And...
23:10Goodbye out there.

23:51No, Miriam.
