Zac Taylor on Bengals' Struggles on Defense, Andrei Iosivas and More.
Transcript
00:00Made with that stuff, it's just fundamentally we got to be better and that's really at every level of the defense.
00:06There's certainly things in the other two phases as well that we have to clean up on offense and special teams as well.
00:10That hasn't been good enough either.
00:11So as a team, those are the things that we're all accountable for and I know that the guys are of the right mindset to get it fixed and play better so that we can go win a game.
00:20How much do you look back at some of this stuff from yesterday and just say there's just too much inexperience on the field on defense together that's causing some of this stuff?
00:27That's where we're at and so we have to create that experience quickly.
00:32And so again, learning from number one, you can't make the same mistake twice.
00:36So maybe you're seeing it for the first time or in the context of a game for the first time and if we're slow to react in the second time, we can't be slow to react.
00:44And so there's going to be a little bit of that, especially when you're playing some young players, which we got a couple of rookies playing on defense that I think have tremendous upside and I'm excited about them.
00:52And at moments, there's going to be growing pains.
00:54You just can't have them all together, you know, one play this guy, one play that guy.
01:00I see elements that I'm excited about in our future as we continue to grow this week and going forward.
01:06And so again, just like I stated, it's about, all right, we made a mistake.
01:10I'm not going to ever repeat that mistake again.
01:12I've learned from it.
01:13I've been in the game.
01:14I've done that.
01:15Other guys at the position holding everybody accountable, like helping them get lined up, helping them get the call, helping them make the correction immediately after the snap.
01:22And again, we got good people that are all in.
01:26Like when you watch the, when you, one thing you look at when you're having the struggles we had on defense yesterday in terms of giving up the points, you look at the effort.
01:34It's not an effort.
01:35It's not a want to.
01:35It's not a guy's checking out.
01:37It wasn't perfect all the time, but there were moments there in the fourth quarter.
01:41I saw 11 guys swarming to the ball, you know, and we're going to continue to build off of that.
01:46We're not going to run from the fact that it was good enough.
01:48It wasn't good enough.
01:49We got to get some stops and keep the points off the board.
01:53There's some opportunities we had where we're an inch away and, and we didn't take advantage of that inch and they did.
01:59And so seven points or led to three points when we could have been off the field.
02:02And those are things that we'll be better for in the future.
02:05What was the message that you have with the team today?
02:08Similar.
02:08I mean, it's similar, similar to all the things I've said here today.
02:10Do you look at the standing division right now and we're all in the struggles on defense, all of the struggles you've had overall, three and five, and still right in the thick of it?
02:23I'm aware of it, absolutely.
02:26And today's about cleaning up yesterday for us.
02:29You know, it's not, yeah, I'm aware of that.
02:32That hasn't been a focus for us today.
02:33We just have to control things we can control because if we do that, we're going to be just fine moving in the future and we'll be able to take advantage of the opportunities we get.
02:40But until we make these corrections and are better for it this week, then none of that's going to matter to us.
02:45And we know that, and I know that our guys are accountable for it and want to get it fixed.
02:50Why do you do differently from a tackle perspective?
02:53There's things, you know, we're going to look at being creative with it.
02:55I'm not going to get in here and get into it all, but I think when you're saying it's an issue, back-to-back weeks, multiple weeks, then we've got to find ways to fix it.
03:06And so that's what we'll do.
03:09With what you said about not making the same mistake twice, is the tackling issue because it does keep coming up over and over again, is that purely physical?
03:17Is that not guys mentally putting them in a bad position to make a tackle or are they just unable to, the technique's not?
03:23No, I think it's at moments there's flat-out missed tackles.
03:27At moments there's a step of hesitancy that is not allowing you to be in a position to get the guy down for a two- to three-yard gain as opposed to, you know, more significant than that.
03:36And so, again, things that you can see on the tape and are able to be cleaned up, and we just have to do it.
03:42Can't keep sitting up here and saying it.
03:44What is the tape telling you about the last two games from a pass-rushing standpoint, no sacks, only three hits?
03:50When you look at it and you just broke down kind of what's going on with tackling, is it guys just not winning one-on-ones?
03:56Is it as simple as that, or what are you diagnosing as that issue right now?
03:59It's got to be everybody collectively.
04:02There's that.
04:02There's got to be some more one-on-ones that we're winning, we're getting home on.
04:06With our pressures, sometimes we're right there, right in the thick of it, and maybe at that point there's a coverage let-up where they just give up a little bit of space and he can get the ball and find a completion.
04:15So it all works together in conjunction, and I think overall it's certainly an area we've got to improve.
04:21Got to affect the passer.
04:23Don't talk a ton about playing with the lead.
04:25Going back to last year, you all have had some weights, double digits in the second half, and haven't been able to kind of see those home.
04:30Why do you think that is?
04:31Well, I think there was three drives there we didn't score in the second half, and they're all frustrating.
04:35They're all disappointing.
04:36The first drive, the second half, you know, that was a chance for us to create a lot of separation there in the game.
04:42And two efficient plays.
04:44The third down didn't work out for us.
04:48Disappointing because that was, to me, that was the opportunity for us to put the game away, quite frankly,
04:53and go down there and create a three-score lead and start to run away with this.
04:57And so, you know, you've asked me a lot of defensive questions a lot, but there's still things on offense, obviously,
05:02that, you know, we want to score in a higher percentage of our drives than we just did.
05:06And you cross that 40 threshold, and that's going to be tough to beat.
05:09And so, again, we have high expectations for what the offense does.
05:13There was opportunities there yesterday to capitalize on to get more points on the board,
05:17even if it's just three points and would have been able to win the game
05:20and be able to clean up the stuff after a win, which is a lot more fun than doing it after a loss.
05:24It doesn't mean that anything necessarily changes because you've still got to make these corrections,
05:28but there were still opportunities out there that offensively we ought to take advantage of.
05:32When you go back and look at some of those opportunities last year that kind of slipped through all's fingers,
05:35is there other commonalities that you see as to –
05:38No, I think last year was different than this year.
05:42Anything you can point to with Andre this year, maybe why he's not taking advantage of something?
05:48I think there's certainly a couple plays that he wants back,
05:51and there's been some times he's made some big plays for us as well.
05:54So I got a lot of faith in Andre.
05:59Before the first two-point conversion, it seemed like there was like a late sub or two.
06:03Like, was there some confusion or communication there?
06:07When they went for two, there was slight confusion.
06:10We got our guys on the field, and they got the call, and they were able to operate.
06:13We'll be able to see them tonight.
06:32I'm feeling like we're looking for a good deal.
