Zac Taylor on Bengals' Preseason Win Over Bears
Transcript
00:00Good game. I thought our guys played well.
00:02Just talking about I thought we tackled well on defense and special teams.
00:04I thought on offense, I thought we passed protected well,
00:08gave the quarterbacks a great chance to make good decisions
00:10and made plays for them in the pass camp.
00:13In our special teams, we really stepped up in all phases.
00:16I thought there were some good things.
00:17Evan had a good opportunity to kick one of those missile kicks on the kickoff.
00:21I thought Rico had a great punt.
00:23We got Kane Grandy in there for a snap as a long snapper.
00:27So I just thought we got a chance to work on some stuff.
00:29The guys really stepped up, and it was good to see.
00:31Cash Tal, what was the best to help you?
00:33Yeah, I just decided to help him out.
00:34He's got a ton of reps over the last couple weeks, and we just helped him out.
00:38What did you like by your receivers?
00:39I thought they made plays.
00:41I thought they made some great one-on-one opportunities.
00:43Did a good job.
00:45I just thought all around they did a good job.
00:47You know, they made plays for us, and I thought quarterbacks were real decisive,
00:50made really good decisions, really good with the operation,
00:53getting out of the huddle, utilizing the play clock,
00:55utilizing the different cans that we had, you know, to get to our second plays.
00:59You know, they blitzed us some, and I thought our quarterbacks handled it really well,
01:03getting to our checks and executing.
01:04Had some good third and long conversions, particularly on the first drive,
01:08but I think overall they played really well.
01:10What did you like about the defense?
01:12Zach, obviously there's been a lot of focus on quality depth
01:15and going up against Caleb Williams.
01:17I thought it was really clean.
01:18You know, I think in the first half we gave up two nakeds,
01:22where they just got us with two explosive plays on the backside on the naked.
01:26Aside from that, I thought our guys played really clean.
01:28They got guys on the ground.
01:30You won't watch the tape and see how many missed tackles,
01:31but I thought our guys did a great job leveraging the ball,
01:34getting the ball on the ground,
01:35did a good job taking away some downfield throws
01:37and making them check it down underneath.
01:39So I just thought overall that they played very clean.
01:41It was a little moment maybe,
01:42but it seemed like the defense took advantage of that holding penalty
01:46and then didn't give up any round.
01:48Yeah, I mean that's how it goes sometimes.
01:49You know, I think two times they had holding penalties on drives
01:53that set them back,
01:54and you get them in a long yardage situation and you hold on.
01:58And that's football.
01:59And I thought our guys did a nice job getting the stops.
02:01After two games, a couple of impressions Dante Myers made Monday.
02:04He's done a good job.
02:05You know, the opportunities that come to him,
02:07he's done a good job catching the ball,
02:08returning the ball, had some jet sweeps.
02:11So I think he's just trying to make the most of his opportunities.
02:14How important was it to you, Sean, some extended time, Sean Clifford?
02:19You know, it was really the way Josh played in the first half.
02:22Josh, I thought, played excellent
02:23and finished with a nice touchdown drive at halftime.
02:27And so it was just a good opportunity to get him out.
02:29Probably would have played him in the third quarter,
02:31but just thought he played real clean.
02:34And so got Sean in there in the second half.
02:36It was great.
02:36Sean had a great command.
02:37Sean gets, mind you, probably two refs in training camp maybe.
02:41He's maybe had less than ten, I would say.
02:44So then he goes out there and plays a game real clean.
02:47And that just shows you the work behind the scenes that he's doing
02:49to make sure he gets himself ready.
02:51And the job Brad Craigthorpe does with him.
02:53And so really impressed by Sean to be able to go out there and execute.
02:57With the snaps that you saw tonight included starting training camp,
03:02how would you evaluate what you're seeing at backup tackle behind the Marius and Armando?
03:06I think we've – that's still pretty open.
03:10I think that there's guys we're still looking at,
03:12and I wouldn't say that there's any decisions that we've made there.
03:15Connor Liu and Eric all both playing time.
03:18Was this just kind of for you about let's get their feet wet and get them game ramps,
03:22or was there more to it?
03:23No, it was that.
03:24It was, you know, Connor, this is part of his progression coming off the ACL.
03:29He's done all the practice things we need to do, check the box.
03:31We got him out in the game to check the box.
03:34I think he, you know, he got 16 plays in the first drive
03:36and then played the second drive as well.
03:38And then Eric – it was just more about Eric,
03:40just letting him get into a game environment.
03:42I know he was excited for that.
03:45And so I don't know how many snaps he got, five or six,
03:48but it was good to get him out there.
03:52What's that?
03:53Play calling apparatus tonight?
03:55Apparatus?
03:55Yes.
03:56What does that mean?
03:57So the pitch call was it?
03:59Yeah.
04:00Isn't the apparatus like an object?
04:02I think they – both.
04:03I was sort of –
04:04Yeah.
04:06No, pitched – he did an excellent job.
04:08Called the game tonight, did an excellent job, great prep all week,
04:11preparing for this practice, calling the game.
04:14I thought he had a great feel for it and did a good job putting the quarterbacks
04:17in great positions, getting them in a good rhythm.
04:20So I thought he did an excellent job.
04:21Going back to the game as well?
04:23I don't know yet.
04:24We'll figure that out.
04:25You see the splash plays from Colby.
04:26How are you seeing him round out his game and do all those things to continue?
04:30Yeah, I think for Colby, there's seven years of experience he has to make up.
04:34You know, we've got a really veteran receiving group that's just played a lot of ball for us.
04:40And so it's no fault of his own.
04:41There's just a lot of things he's going to catch up on, and he's working hard to do it.
04:44He's making the plays that come to him.
04:45That's job number one for the receiver.
04:48He's willing to be physical.
04:49He has shown that in practice over and over again in the run game.
04:52And so now it's just all the nuances that he's just got to catch up on
04:55with guys that have been doing it for, you know, four, five, six, seven years.
04:59Going back to backup tackle, going back to backup tackle,
05:03what do you want to see from whoever earns that spot?
05:07Consistency.
05:07You know, just trust.
05:08If a backup tackle's got to go in the game,
05:09and we want to keep playing the way we would play,
05:12you've just got to be all trusting in the game.
05:13And so I think there's plenty of competition there.
05:16And, you know, we've still got two weeks to go with it.
05:20I'll let you finish, and then I'll come back to you, Hub.
05:21Landon Robinson had a second half tonight.
05:24Where have you seen him grow since day one?
05:26I thought he did a good, you know, to my eye,
05:28I've never coached T-tackles in my life,
05:29but he did a good job coming clean, looping around
05:33and kind of not wasting any space there
05:35and closing down on the quarterback before you could really see him coming.
05:39So, again, just like I'm going to say with any guys competing
05:42for some of these backup jobs, just the consistency is what we want.
05:45It doesn't always have to be splash play.
05:47It's great to see a splash play.
05:48That's great.
05:48That was a big, big play in the drive.
05:50But we really want to see the consistency that if you go in the game
05:53and have to play five to 20 snaps,
05:55that you're going to do your job
05:57and allow those around you to do their job as well.
05:59Go ahead, Jeff.
06:00Yeah.
06:01Either way, you guys held up physically with the joint practice
06:04and with the roster held up against an NFC North champion.
06:09You've got to be pleased with how, you know, I mean, it matched up.
06:13Yeah.
06:14A lot of respect for them.
06:15That's a great opportunity for us this week to practice with them.
06:19They're well-prepared, really veteran play callers in all three phases.
06:25I mean, it's about as veteran as you get.
06:26Ben's called plays for a long time.
06:27Richard Hightower's done it for a long time.
06:30DA's done it forever.
06:31So I thought it was just good for our coaching staff,
06:34for our players to go against that.
06:37And it was a good test for us all week.
06:39What's the most to you about the joint practice
06:41and I guess the way you guys finished, especially on 13th?
06:43I thought situationally we got really good work.
06:45We got a chance to hit every field zone there was.
06:48So you got a chance to rep your concepts against a defense
06:51and offense that you don't face.
06:54They got great scheme in both sides that really stresses you, I thought.
06:59The situational stuff, you know, we did a three-and-a-half-minute drill at the end.
07:02We did it twice.
07:04So I just thought there's a lot of situations that arise there.
07:07We've done it to ourselves as well.
07:08We'll do it again.
07:09I just think there's a lot for us to continue to think about as those situations come up.
07:13So I thought that was really valuable.
07:16Happy with how it ended, obviously,
07:17but I think it's just valuable to go against a different team
07:19and have to think through a lot of situations how you've managed it.
07:21We haven't had a chance to ask you since Joe spoke.
07:24On Thursday, now or never, he was asked, is it now or never?
07:28His attitude is that's absolutely how he's approaching the season.
07:32Your reaction, your thoughts when you heard Joe's comments.
07:35I'd just take it one game at a time.
07:37We're just going to keep working, try to be on the feet in the preseason
07:39and get better every single day we got.
07:41I think Brian Packer, I don't know if he came off the field,
07:44but he played three spots.
07:46Yeah.
07:47I mean, you've got to be pleased with what he's doing.
07:49Yeah, I think we've made him do a lot.
07:52We've made him play center.
07:53We've made him play guard.
07:55He obviously finished at tackle in college.
07:57So he's got a lot of versatility, which is critical.
08:00But I've been pleased with how he's picked it up
08:02and never batted an eye at where we're putting him.
08:05We'll assess, obviously, how he played at the different spots tonight,
08:07but I've been pleased with the training camp he's had.
08:09Is there a tackle in his future?
08:12He's got his background.
08:14So right now we're having him learn guard primarily.
08:19He's proven that he can be an emergency center for us, which is good, you know,
08:22if you're in a game.
08:23But I'm really pleased with his development right now.
08:26What do you need to see that you haven't maybe seen yet?
08:28Because you all know that you can't get ready for the quarter.
08:31Have seen anybody?
08:32Something you haven't seen yet?
08:33No, we just need to continue to practice.
08:35And I think just as many situations as we can put ourselves in
08:40to get our players comfortable with that.
08:41But we've gotten good work in at this point.
08:44Now we're going to hit some three-day stretches where we get some good work this week
08:47leading into Philly, then three days, you know, leading into weeks hereby,
08:50then we've got Tampa.
08:51So you're really looking at nine practices there,
08:54ten practices really before we get to Tampa.
08:56So that's the way I think of it.
08:58We've got ten real practices to get ourselves ready to go,
09:01and that's really where our focus primarily turns to.
09:04To that point, is it, I mean, obviously for a rookie like Connor,
09:07you'd want him to be able to take advantage of the full offseason,
09:10but does it make you feel that much better that now he's got at least,
09:14he can get two games of reps and the next ten practices you're talking about
09:18so that if anything were to happen to Ted,
09:20you'd be able to feel comfortable putting a rookie in there to snap it to Joe?
09:24I feel good about his progression, they said.
09:26You know, and it's, you don't always put these guys in a position to work with the guys
09:30that they'll probably be playing with if, God forbid, something ever happened.
09:33But I think Connor's done a great job managing it and doing the best he can,
09:37and he's done as well as we could have hoped, you know,
09:41with the limited time he's gotten so far.
