Why Diamonds Are So Hard to Cut!
Transcript
00:00Well, for starters, they're very rare and difficult to mine, and that's before they're even cut and polished.
00:06Then there's the fact that they're nearly pure carbon, which makes them extremely hard.
00:11This means that they can't be cut by just any old machine.
00:14Special equipment made of harder materials like tungsten carbide are needed to cut diamonds, and this adds to their overall cost.
00:21Once the diamonds are cut, they're graded by several different organizations.
00:24The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, is perhaps the most well-known.
00:31They assign each diamond a grade based on four criteria—color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.
00:37The higher the grade, the rarer the diamond, and the more expensive it becomes.
00:41Let's take a closer look at each of these characteristics and how they affect the price of diamonds.
00:47Color. Color is arguably the most important factor in determining the price of a diamond.
