00:00was born in the working class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires known as the suburbs. These
00:05neighborhoods were home to a diverse mix of immigrant communities, including Spaniards,
00:10Italians, Germans, and many more. The residents of these neighborhoods were mostly poor and worked
00:16long and hard hours as laborers, domestic servants, or in other manual occupations.
00:21They had little access to education and health care, and were often subject to discrimination
00:26and violence. Despite these hardships, the people of the suburbs were proud of their cultural heritage
00:32and were eager to share it with others. They did this through music and dance, which became an
00:37important part of their daily lives. Music and dance were a way for them to express their joy,
00:43sorrow, anger, and love. It was also a way to socialize and meet new people. In the early 1890s,
00:49the suburbs began to develop their own distinct culture, one that was a mix of African, European,
00:56and American influences. This culture was centered around the comps, which were social clubs that
01:02provided a space for people to gather and enjoy music and dance. The compsoras were typically run
01:08by an elected board of directors and had a membership fee as well as regular dues. Members were expected
01:13to attend rehearsals and performances and to help promote the organization. The compsoras were an
01:19important part of the community because they provided a sense of belonging and solidarity among the
01:25working-class population. They were a place where people could come together and celebrate.
