00:00Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge. Last time we talked about the
00:04grandmother of school shooters and how rare female school shooters are. Well I
00:08want to take a brief look at those rare times that a school shooter happened to
00:12be a female. Now note that I'm only going to talk about single shooters not
00:16couples or murder suicides. These are done mainly in chronological order so
00:21let's take a look at the 13 cases of female school shooters.
00:30On the morning of October 24th 1984 in Salina Ohio a 10 year old boy was
00:36boarding the school bus in front of his father's house as he was the first stop
00:40on driver Jean Greene's route. When a car pulled up behind the bus and a woman got
00:45out 45 year old Shirley Schindeldecker the mother of the boy got out and boarded the
00:51bus at gunpoint trying to remove the child off the bus. The bus driver stopped her
00:55and struggled to take the gun out of her hand when the gun discharged hitting Jean
01:00in the chest and right side killing him instantly. Shirley was shoved off the bus
01:04by the boy's uncle and he drove the bus to the police department. As he was
01:09driving Shirley fired off four rounds at the bus and tried to ram it off the road
01:14but nothing worked. They arrived at Salina Police Department. Shirley was arrested
01:18later on that evening in Portland Indiana. After serving 19 months of her sentence
01:24Shirley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and released.
01:31On a snowy day on November 26, 1985, 14 year old Heather Smith asked her friend Matt Hohn
01:39for a ride to Spanaway Junior High School in Spanaway, Washington. Armed with a 22
01:45caliber semi-automatic rifle, Heather asked Matt to bring her ex-boyfriend Gordon Pickett
01:50to the gym. Matt asked Heather, what are you gonna do, blow his brains out? No I don't
01:54even know how to load this thing. But little did he know that she actually did
01:58know how to load and use the rifle as she pointed it at Gordon when he entered the
02:03gym along with his friend Christopher Rico. Chris seeing what was about to happen
02:07dove in front of Gordon taking multiple shots and Gordon was shot multiple times as well.
02:12Heather fled the school but came back later. Where police were already called, witnesses
02:17identified Heather. So once she came back police were trying to talk her into dropping the gun
02:22and after a short standoff with police, Heather put the gun to her mouth and pulled the trigger.
02:27Apparently the whole reason why this all happened was because Gordon broke up with Heather shortly
02:31before the shooting. Days before May 20th 1988, Lori Dan, a 30 year old divorcee, delivered
02:40arsenic tainted Rice Krispie treats and juice boxes to Chicago area acquaintances, former babysitter
02:47clients, her psychiatrist, her ex-husband, and several fraternity houses at Northwestern University.
02:53No one was ultimately fatally poisoned. On May 20th, she opened fire at the Hubbard Woods Elementary School,
03:00killing 8 year old Nicholas Corwin and injuring 5 students. She would later hold a family hostage
03:06for hours, shooting but not killing the family patriarch before fatally shooting herself.
03:15On October 6, 1988, 29 year old Arlene Lalonde arrived at Most Pure Heart of Mary School,
03:22a Catholic school in Mobile, Alabama. She entered Angela Brown's 6th grade classroom, pointing a handgun
03:28at the 10 children around the 35 year old teacher, and told them to move back.
03:33I want my money, Arlene demanded from Angela, who was still seated. She then fired off several rounds,
03:39hitting Angela at least once in the abdomen. An hour later, Arlene was arrested and charged with first-degree
03:45assault. Angela was taken to the Mobile Infirmary, where she was listed in serious but stable condition.
03:51This was not a case of mistaken identity, as Arlene and Angela are sisters, and this was an ongoing domestic issue.
03:59Angela was able to make a full recovery.
04:04On July 21, 1994, during lunchtime at Ardmore Child Care Center in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, 36 year old Arcelia Stavall walked in the daycare center,
04:16shot and killed her former friend, 40 year old Diane Morse, in front of a group of preschoolers.
04:22Arcelia was arrested shortly after and was charged and convicted of first-degree murder, and is serving a life sentence.
04:29Arcelia had a history of mental illness. Diane left behind a husband and two daughters. Her youngest daughter was only eight years old at the time.
04:42On September 17, 1996, at 9.30 a.m., 19 year old Jillian Robbins was crouched behind some bushes at the Hub Robinson Center,
04:52which is at the heart of Pennsylvania State University's main campus.
04:56She squeezed the trigger, instantly killing 21-year-old Melanie Spala, then shooting and injuring 22-year-old Nicholas Menza on the left side of his abdomen,
05:06randomly shooting anyone who walked by.
05:08While trying to load her second clip into her Mauser rifle, aerospace engineering student Brendan Malover tackled her,
05:15pinning her to the ground until authorities arrived, stopping the mayhem in a short period of time.
05:20In a later interview, Jillian claims she had an explosion of insane rage. This was after she returned from basic training after enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserves.
05:29She failed to disclose that she had a history of mental issues, including hallucinations as a 10th grader, hearing voices and seeing tall, dark people with dark cloaks and no eyes.
05:40And also has depression, which she had spent time in a mental hospital for treatment. She blames her basic training for her becoming more aggressive.
05:49She is currently serving 30 to 60 years in prison.
05:55On March 7, 2001, at Bishop Newman Junior Senior High School in Williamsport, Pennsylvania,
06:0114-year-old Elizabeth Bush walked into a crowded cafeteria during lunchtime and shot 14-year-old Kimberly Marchese in the shoulder.
06:10Elizabeth then fled the cafeteria not knowing that she shot anyone.
06:14She was arrested and charged as a juvenile with attempted homicide and aggravated assault.
06:19It appears that Elizabeth was being picked on and made fun of by other students, including Kimberly.
06:24She was going through a lot of mental issues like cutting and depression.
06:28She told other students that her sister had a blood disease and that people should pray for her.
06:34Elizabeth was being made fun of, being called a homosexual and other slurs, and they would throw rocks at her at times.
06:41Having bid the new kid at school, she just didn't seem to fit in.
06:44So she stole her father's .22 caliber revolver and brought it to school because she wanted people to know my pain.
06:51From repeated teasing, she was sentenced to an open-ended term at a psychiatric facility.
06:57No one really knows why 23-year-old Latina Williams opened fire with a .357 revolver shooting and killing fellow nursing students,
07:0826-year-old Tanisha Butler and 21-year-old Krishika Graves.
07:13She fired off six rounds, then reloaded the gun, then shot herself in the head inside the classroom.
07:18This all happened at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on February 8, 2008.
07:25According to witnesses, Latina entered the classroom, talking with the teacher for a brief moment, left the classroom, and re-entered with the gun.
07:33Latina's family said she had experienced signs of paranoia before the shooting.
07:37She had no permanent address and was living out of her car.
07:41Karnisha Graves was the mother of two.
07:43The coroner told her family they found her deceased body holding a pencil in her hand.
07:48That did not surprise her family, who described her as kind-hearted, a hard worker, and an avid learner with whom everyone liked.
07:56Tanisha Butler was married, the mother of three children.
07:59She attended college studying nursing because she wanted to give her kids a better life.
08:03Her sister, Toni Butler, also attended college and heard the fatal shot that killed her sister as she sat in her classroom nearby.
08:11There was no suicide note, nor a clear motive for the shooting.
08:15On November 12, 2008, at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 15-year-old Tia Wimberly shot and killed her friend, 15-year-old Amanda Collette, in the hallway after Amanda rejected Tia's romantic advancements again.
08:32An argument ensued, so Tia took a small caliber pistol and shot her.
08:37Tia was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon at school.
08:41Later in court, Tia made a statement.
08:43Quote,
08:44I will never forgive myself for what I have done, and I will expect you to forgive me.
08:48You have no idea how truly sorry I am.
08:51Unquote.
08:52She was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
08:54This really isn't a serious one, but I thought it was a bit humorous.
08:59On September 11, 2014, at Westbrook Elementary School in Taylorsville, Utah, 6th grade teacher Michelle Ferguson Montgomery, who had a concealed weapon permit and was carrying that day, went to the faculty restroom.
09:13As she sat on the toilet, her gun accidentally discharged, hitting the toilet and exploding.
09:18Fragments from the toilet and the bullet injured her leg, but she was in good condition.
09:23Talk about having a crappy day.
09:28On September 9, 2016, at Alpine High School in Alpine, Texas, an unidentified 14-year-old freshman girl came into the school intending on shooting and killing her stepbrother for some unknown reason.
09:41But her plans were foiled as she loaded her 9mm handgun that she stole from home when a 17-year-old student entered the girl's restroom.
09:50The 17-year-old ran as the 14-year-old started shooting at her.
09:53She was shot on the lower part of her body, but managed to get out.
09:57Spooked by this, the 14-year-old turned the gun on herself and committed suicide.
10:01Her identity was never released to the public.
10:04Confused about how many shooters might be involved, a U.S. Marshal accidentally shot a Homeland Security agent, but he was able to make a full recovery.
10:14On the morning of February 1, 2018, at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles, California, an unidentified female student discharged a handgun inside her classroom.
10:26At first, the students didn't think it was real until they found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the head, a 15-year-old girl shot in the wrist, and three others with minor injuries.
10:38The 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head got lucky because the bullet failed to cause serious damage.
10:43The 12-year-old girl claimed it was unintentional.
10:46She was charged with negligent discharge of a firearm.
10:49On the morning of May 6, 2021, at Rigby Middle School in Rigby, Idaho, an unidentified sixth-grade female student arrived at school around 8.19 a.m., spending the time before school started in various parts of the school, stopping several times to retrieve items from her backpack.
11:13Just after 9 a.m., the girl left the class she was in and appeared to go into the counselor's office.
11:19She then reached into her backpack and pulled out a gun and began firing at students.
11:24She took aim at Janitor Jim Wilson, who couldn't see what the girl had in her hand.
11:29Next thing he knows, he was shot in the leg.
11:32The second person shot was a girl leaving the bathroom.
11:35The bullet hit her elbow.
11:36The school went into lockdown, the shooter following other fleeing students out through the doors on the east end of the school.
11:43That was when the third and final victim was shot in the thigh and hand.
11:47Teacher Krista Netting disarmed the girl, deciding against unloading the gun and rather hold the gun and keep her finger off the trigger while hugging the shooter.
11:58The shooter was in custody by 9.16 a.m.
12:01Looking through her backpack, police found another pistol, two knives, and a torch.
12:06There was also a hit list and written plans to kill at least 20 and wound 40 to 60 people.
12:12She was charged with three counts of attempted murder.
12:14She later pled guilty to all three charges and entered a plea agreement.
12:18The shooter will remain in the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections custody until her 19th birthday or until the custody review board deems her rehabilitated.
12:29If not deemed rehabilitated by the time she's 19, the girl could be held until she's 21.
12:36She will remain on probation for 36 months after her release.
12:43Seems like female school shooters, just like their male counterparts, are really no different.
12:48The only difference being that they didn't kill as many people.
12:50Not every shooting is going to be like Columbine.
12:53Let's hope we never see another shooting at that level.
12:56Although that's just wishful thinking for me.
12:59I hate the fact that school shootings in general have become almost the norm for school age and even college age kids.
13:06School shootings started to come more into the mainstream as I was graduating school back in the late 90s early 2000s.
13:12So I never had to do the lockdown drills and active school shooter drills and things like that.
13:18I can only imagine how these kids feel nowadays.
13:21They should feel safe when going to school.
13:23But sadly, it's still becoming all too common for an institution of learning to become a scene of tragedy.
13:29Now for the 10% of you that stuck around until the end, thank you.
