Housing Secretary Steve Reed assures the public new checks are being introduced in prisons after a high profile migrant sex offender was accidentally released from prison early on Friday. 00:00Well, it's absolutely shocking. My jaw was on the floor. I'm sure everybody listening felt the same when we hear that that individual had no right to be in the country in the first place, committed that offence and then was accidentally released. It just shows what we already knew, that we have a broken criminal justice system. We know that because when this government was elected, there were no prison places left. They were full up. A third of the professional staff working in the criminal justice system had been sacked under the previous government.
00:28So we're fixing a broken system here. The Justice Secretary, David Lammy, will be making a statement in the House of Commons today to answer questions, but also to explain what new checks are being put in place so this kind of accidental release cannot happen again.
