This week's ASEAN Summit in Malaysia has brought an enhanced ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia and the induction of Timor-Leste as a new member. But much attention has been on the US-China trade talks taking place on the sidelines, ahead of an expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later in the week.

00:00Heads of state from Southeast Asia and beyond are gathering in Malaysia for the ASEAN summit,
00:05but it's the U.S.-China talks happening on the sidelines that have grabbed the world's attention.
00:10Trump looks to be in high spirits as the two sides hammer out a framework of a trade deal,
00:14a possible de-escalation in what's been a punishing trade war.
00:18That's ahead of a meeting Trump's scheduled to have with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea later this week.
00:24The president had given me maximum leverage when he threatened 100 percent tariffs
00:30if the Chinese imposed their rare earth global export controls.
00:35So I think we have averted that.
00:38We also agreed on substantial agriculture purchases for U.S. farmers.
00:44We agreed that the Chinese would begin to help us with the precursor chemicals
00:49for this terrible fentanyl epidemic that's ravaging our country.
00:54The discussion of the both sides include many issues,
00:59such as the both sides are interested in the export management issues.
01:05The appropriate payment issue will further expand the issue of a longer-term issue.
01:11The payment issue of the分泰國 and the分泰國 cooperation issue.
01:16Absent in the talks was any mention of Taiwan,
01:19one of the sore spots in U.S.-China relations.
01:22Though it's still possible Taiwan could come up in the Trump-Xi meeting,
01:26U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the country won't be a bargaining chip
01:30in talks that are really about trade.
