00:00Poland and NATO scrambled fighter jets to shoot down Russian drones flying in Polish airspace.
00:06It's a clear violation of Poland's sovereign territory,
00:09and the country's leaders say it's now closer to all-out war than it's been since World War II.
00:19An estimated 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace overnight on September 9th
00:26and into the morning of the 10th. Two Polish F-16s and two Dutch F-35s
00:32were scrambled to intercept the drones. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the drones that
00:38posed a direct threat were shot down. Some damage was reported to Holmes. Thankfully,
00:44no one died as a result of the drone incursion. Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius
00:51says while it was an attack, it wasn't a typical attack.
00:56It was an attack in a kind of hurting the airspace of Poland. But it was not an attack in the military
01:07sense that anything was destroyed or anything was killed as far as I'm informed. So this is not
01:13really a delivered attack, but it is a delivered injury of international law and the sovereignty
01:19of Poland. So this is about that, and therefore we have to discuss that in Brussels.
01:25Whether anyone died or not, Poland is now enacting Article 4 of the NATO agreement,
01:31which will create a formal consultation process to determine appropriate responses among the 32
01:38member nations. A NATO member can enact Article 4 when it feels its territorial integrity,
01:45political independence, and national security are threatened.
01:48The polls are now taking this seriously. The senior officials today, I saw a BBC news story about
01:55this, were saying that this is on the verge of potentially World War III, that the polls have to
02:00get ready for potential further escalations in the war that the Russians are conducting against Ukraine
02:06and being on high alert. Mark Timnitsky is a non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council.
02:12There have been some other instances over the last three and a half years where when Ukrainians are
02:17using their air defense systems to shoot the drones or missiles that the Russians are sending over into
02:22Ukraine, that some of that debris has spilled over into Poland as well. So it's not the first time
02:27that something has entered Polish airspace because of this war going on.
02:30But Timnitsky says this time it's different. After all, in the more than three and a half years of
02:37fighting between Ukraine and Russia, this instance marks the first time a NATO ally was forced to
02:44take direct military action against Russia. This has given the Europeans an opportunity to really
02:51understand the severity of the war. Of course, everyone is aware that thousands of Ukrainian civilians
02:58who died, that the Russians have had over a million casualties, that the Ukrainian armed
03:03servicemen and women have also had significant casualties. But now that with Polish airspace being
03:10violated, with the Russian drones entering, and with other potential consequences as a result of
03:16this, the Europeans really have to understand that this is not just Russia invading Ukraine, but it's
03:21Russia encroaching on European traditions and values and democracy.
03:24As of published time, NATO was still waiting to hear from the White House about possible responses
03:30to the recent incursion. President Trump did post on Truth Social, what's with Russia violating
03:36Poland's airspace with drones? Here we go. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said whether it was
03:43intentional or not, Russia is being absolutely reckless.
03:47To Putin, I mean, my message is clear. Stop the war in Ukraine. Stop the escalating war,
03:53which he is now basically mounting on innocent civilians and civilian infrastructure. Stop
03:59violating Allied airspace and know that we stand ready, that we are vigilant and that we will defend
04:06every inch of NATO territory. Now, as fate would have it, I'm actually leaving for Ukraine in two
04:11days for a reporting trip and will be flying into Poland. So, in the event there are more major
04:17breaking news stories coming out of the region, we'll have you covered. Just make sure you download
