00:00You've probably noticed it, that quick, clean summary that pops up when you Google a topic.
00:06Generated by AI, it gives you the answer instantly, and often it's exactly what you need.
00:12But Penske Corporation says those summaries are costing them big time,
00:16and now it's become the first major American media company to sue Google and its parent company, Alphabet.
00:22Penske owns major entertainment brands like Rolling Stone, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter.
00:30The company says Google's AI-generated summaries are so effective, users are skipping its links altogether,
00:37getting the info they need without ever clicking through.
00:41According to The Wall Street Journal, Penske claims about 20% of its Google search results now feature an AI summary,
00:47and it's seen a one-third drop in related online shopping revenue this year.
00:53Filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., the lawsuit also accuses Google of using Penske's content without compensation
01:00and seeks monetary damages along with a permanent injunction against the use of its material in AI summaries.
01:08It comes as Google already faces antitrust scrutiny,
01:12with one judge ruling last year that the company held an illegal monopoly in searches.
