00:00Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. testified before the Senate
00:04Finance Committee Thursday, where he unapologetically defended his approach to health care and
00:09his restructuring of the nation's health agencies.
00:15Before the hearing even started, Democratic lawmakers, health organizations, and current
00:20and former HHS employees called for Kennedy to resign or be fired.
00:24It is in the country's best interest that Robert Kennedy step down, and if he doesn't,
00:30Donald Trump should fire him before more people are hurt by his reckless disregard for science
00:35and the truth.
00:36Just in the last month, Secretary Kennedy has fired CDC Director Susan Monterey and canceled
00:41$500 million in funding to help develop vaccines using mRNA, which is how the COVID vaccine was
00:47created in record time.
00:49Kennedy also revoked the Emergency Use Authorization for the COVID-19 vaccine,
00:53which evidence presented at the hearing shows is confusing doctors about who should get it.
00:59Secretary Kennedy said all these moves are important steps to restore public trust in health care.
01:04CDC failed that responsibility miserably during COVID when its disastrous and nonsensical policies
01:12destroyed small businesses, violated civil liberties, closed our schools, caused generational
01:18damage in doing so, masked infants with no science, and heightened economic inequality.
01:25And that's why we need bold, competent, and creative new leadership at CDC.
01:30In June, Kennedy removed and replaced every member of the Advisory Committee for Immunization
01:35Practices, or ACIP, which makes recommendations to the CDC about the safety, efficacy, and clinical
01:41need for vaccines.
01:42Critics say Kennedy's appointees have a history of questioning vaccines that have been proven
01:48effective.
01:49The new members will meet for the first time on September 18th and 19th.
01:53There's bipartisan concern that some of these members could try to revoke vaccine guidance
01:59that has been proven to work.
02:00I hope that you will tell the American people how many preventable child deaths are an acceptable
02:08sacrifice for enacting an agenda that I think is fundamentally cruel and defies common sense.
02:15Senator, you've sat in that chair for how long?
02:1920, 25 years while the chronic disease in our children went up to 76 percent.
02:25And you said nothing.
02:26You never asked the question why it's happening.
02:28Why is this happening?
02:29Some of the vaccines that could be discussed at the ACIP meeting include measles, mumps,
02:34and rubella, and hepatitis B.
02:36There are real concerns that safe, proven vaccines like measles, like hepatitis B, and others could
02:42be in jeopardy.
02:43And that would put Americans at risk and reverse decades of progress.
02:47As we've seen over the last four years, the previous administration four years, when
02:51recommendations became politicized or were swayed by bias, that the public trust can be lost.
02:57Kennedy said he doesn't expect any changes to the MMR vaccine, which babies and children
03:02get in two doses.
03:03He also said it's wrong to say he's denying people vaccines.
03:07In addition to Kennedy's new approach to vaccine safety, senators also took issue with him openly
03:12casting doubt on government data.
03:14You're the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
03:17You don't have any idea how many Americans died from COVID?
03:21I don't think anybody knows that because there was so much data chaos coming out of the CDC.
03:28The criticism doesn't appear to have changed Kennedy's mind.
03:31In fact, right after the hearing was over, HHS announced it is reinforcing religious and
03:36conscience exemptions for vaccine mandates for children.
