00:00President Trump signed off on a $14 billion deal to keep TikTok alive in the U.S., but it comes with a catch.
00:08The new executive order signed Thursday means big changes for who controls the app and even bigger questions for the 170 million Americans who use it.
00:20What this deal ensures is that the American entity and the American investors will actually control the algorithm.
00:27We don't want this used as a propaganda tool by any foreign government.
00:31When you open TikTok, your For You page is built from an algorithm that tracks your likes, views and shares.
00:38But that same algorithm has been called a national security risk, one some officials say could be vulnerable to manipulation by China.
00:47Now that American investors and officials will take control of that system, users are wondering what comes next.
00:53Some raising concerns about censorship and whether the platform could start pushing political messaging to favor Trump.
01:00A tech researcher told Barron's that China would still need to sign off on any changes to the original algorithm.
01:07And when asked Thursday whether the feed could start showing MAGA content, Trump had this to say.
01:12If I could make it 100% MAGA, I would, but it's not going to work out that way, unfortunately.
01:17No, everyone's going to be treated fairly.
01:20Every group, every philosophy, every policy will be treated very fairly.
01:27Still, the details of what this new TikTok will actually look like are fuzzy.
01:32And some users aren't waiting around to find out.
01:35And here's what I'm doing and curious about what other people are going to do, too.
01:39We still don't know if the existing app will be migrated or if an entirely new version will roll out.
01:46But here's what is clear.
01:48Six of the seven board seats will go to Americans.
01:51And ByteDance, the Chinese company that currently owns TikTok, will be reduced to just a 20% stake in the new U.S. entity.
01:59With Straight Arrow news, I'm Kennedy Felton.
