00:00Deep Seek AI, it's like ChatGPT but Chinese and it runs at a fraction of the cost.
00:04It's been described as a game changer in AI efficiency, but have they been sneakily stealing
00:08user data and giving it to the CCP?
00:10Well not really.
00:12Users are actually just giving their data to China, willingly.
00:14Here you go.
00:16And yes, before you say, oh ChatGPT gives their data to the US government, yeah, okay, hold
00:20your horses, we'll get to that in a sec.
00:22Deep Seek, an AI startup owned by China-based hedge fund High Flyer, is billed as a budget-friendly
00:27open source alternative to ChatGPT.
00:30By January 2025, it had surpassed ChatGPT in the App Store downloads, shaking up the tech
00:34market.
00:35But as users tested it, a familiar trade-off emerged, privacy risks and security concerns.
00:40On January 29th, cybersecurity firm Wiz discovered Deep Seek had exposed over a million lines
00:45of sensitive data online, including user chat logs and software keys.
00:50We found that they had some log streams actually logging data from their own training, actual
00:55check messages that they used to reinforce their own model.
00:59And also a lot of metadata about their servers, the models they use, some API keys that they
01:05also utilize themselves, Deep Seek API keys.
01:07The leak was quickly locked down, but experts warn that Deep Seek isn't secure enough to
01:11handle private information.
01:12Deep Seek is already under investigation in Europe, with regulators questioning its compliance
01:16with GDPR privacy laws.
01:18Italy's even banned it already.
01:20Beyond privacy, Deep Seek is actively censoring content.
01:23It refuses to discuss historical events like Tiananmen Square, and it modifies answers to
01:27match government-approved narratives.
01:29Unlike Western AI companies like ChatGPT, which can legally challenge government data requests,
01:35Deep Seek is legally required to comply with China's strict surveillance laws.
01:38That means, if the government demands user data or wants to tweak AI responses, Deep Seek
01:43has no choice but to obey.
01:45And yes, you can run Deep Seek locally, but does the average user have the know-how to do that?
01:49A locally installed, large language model.
01:55If you've got a good CPU.
01:59And then it pulls down that Docker container.
02:02Nah.
02:03Bottom line, AI chatbots already raise privacy concerns, but Deep Seek takes it to another
02:07level.
02:08If you care about your digital freedom and security, be cautious about which AI tools you
02:13trust.
02:14Have you used Deep Seek?
02:15What do you think of it?
02:16How does it stack up to other competitors and are you worried about how they use your data?
