Whether you’ve joined us recently or have been with us since the beginning, we are grateful for your support. You are an important part of the global movement protecting online privacy.
Born at CERN in 2014, Proton started as a crowdfunded email project for Proton Mail that raised $500K on Indiegogo and quickly went mainstream, earning a cameo on Mr. Robot and an invitation to a global TED talk, before opening to everyone with a community-funded subscription model that keeps us independent and VC-free to this day.
Since then we’ve launched Proton VPN (2017), Calendar (2019), Drive (2021), Pass (2023), and Wallet (2024); welcomed web pioneer Sir Tim Berners-Lee to our advisory board (2021); earned recognition from The New York Times for defending free access to information (2022); transitioned to a Swiss non-profit structure to better safeguard users’ interests with the launch of the Proton Foundation (2024); grew the Proton Lifetime Community Fundraiser, to more than $4 million in grants over the past decade; and welcomed over 100M people and organizations who believe online privacy and freedom are worth protecting.
