00:00Is this the deepest bench the Knicks have had in years?
00:03Thursday, they re-signed Landry Schammett, and Friday,
00:06they signed former Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon
00:08to a one-year non-guaranteed deal.
00:11So let's bring in Dexter Henry, host of New York Got Game,
00:14with his thoughts on the signing and the possible rotation.
00:17Dex, what's going on, my man? How you feeling?
00:19I'm good, man. Feeling good.
00:21Knicks making some moves here the last couple of days,
00:23like you talked about.
00:24Basketball season's right around the corner. I'm good.
00:26All right, let's talk about those moves,
00:27because, again, they signed Schammett Thursday.
00:30Now Brogdon joins the squad.
00:31I read a tweet that said,
00:33if the Knicks don't make a trade,
00:35then they're going to have to choose between those two.
00:37Love myself a little camp battle.
00:39So two-part question.
00:41What do you think about the Brogdon signing?
00:43And two, who do you think gets that final roster spot
00:46out of the two of these guys?
00:48Yeah, I like the signing.
00:50This is a guy who's been on the Knicks' radar for a little bit.
00:54The Knicks had been looking for some backup point guard help.
00:58Our Stephan Bondi has reported that continuously throughout the summer,
01:01and it was going to be very interesting to see what they did
01:04with the final roster spot.
01:06Now, yesterday I talked to Steph, and at the end of the video,
01:08he mentioned the fact that they could offer some non-guaranteed deals.
01:12That is what has happened here with Landry Schammett and also with Malcolm Brogdon.
01:16But Malcolm Brogdon is a really good player, as well as Landry Schammett.
01:21Landry Schammett, we know about the shooting, what he could do.
01:24He was with the Knicks.
01:24Malcolm Brogdon, former Sixth Man of the Year winner,
01:27former Rookie of the Year winner as well,
01:30had a down year shooting the ball from three-point land last year, only in 29%.
01:34But the previous two years, he has shot 43%.
01:37The thing with Malcolm Brogdon, Brandon, is as talented as a player is
01:42and a playmaker and shot creator, and he's a good backup point guard on your bench,
01:47he's now 32 years old.
01:49He has a lot of injury history.
01:51Only played 24 games last year, so that's a concern with him.
01:55Can he stay healthy?
01:57Schammett also had some injury stuff last year with the shoulder,
01:59but then came on strong, shot the ball very well at the end of the season,
02:02and even sparked the Knicks to a couple of wins in that conference finals
02:06against the Pacers.
02:07So I think what it comes down to, to answer your question, Brandon,
02:10about who could win this spot, it really depends on what the Knicks value.
02:15Is it Schammett shooting and maybe a little bit more trusting his durability,
02:18or is it Brogdon and his playmaking?
02:22I tend to think they might lean a little bit more towards Brogdon
02:26because there's been that talk around the team.
02:29But they're looking for another backup point guard.
02:32They're looking for somebody.
02:33If Jalen Brunson goes down, can he hold down the fort?
02:35You do have Jordan Clarkson.
02:37He's probably a little bit better suited off the ball.
02:39You do have Miles McBride.
02:40He's also better suited off the ball.
02:42So I think the edge goes to Brogdon.
02:44But the thing to also watch is something you mentioned from that tweet you saw from,
02:49I believe that was from Yaron Weitzman,
02:50in which he talked about if the Knicks wanted to have both of these guys
02:54to make the roster, they would have to clear some space.
02:56And so you wonder, would they trade someone, not reporting this,
03:00just putting this out there, would they try to trade someone,
03:03one of the young players like a Tyler Kolek,
03:05to free up some more cap space to a team that can absorb his cap space,
03:09maybe take back like a second-round pick or something like that,
03:11a late second-round pick, and then be able to sign these two vets.
03:15So it's going to be interesting to see as these two battle it out,
03:18do the Knicks value having more veteran bench depth here this year,
03:21or do they still want to keep their young players on the roster?
03:25They just hired Billy Lang to run their player development.
03:27Which one do they value more?
03:29But I think they value the point guard depth,
03:31so I might say Brogdon wins out,
03:33but a lot of this has to do with health and durability
03:35and how these guys play in training camp.
03:37And like you, Brandon, I love a good training camp battle.
03:40Love it.
03:40Yeah, man.
03:41Let's kind of go into a little bit more detail on that bench depth
03:44that you just mentioned.
03:45Leon Rose has been active this offseason.
03:47On paper, do you think that this is the deepest Knicks bench
03:51that you've seen in years?
03:54Yeah, that's a really good question.
03:56And I have to say yes.
03:57I mean, especially when you look at, you know,
04:00I think some people will look at that 20,
04:03I'm trying to think, a couple years ago, 23-24 team.
04:06That team was really deep too.
04:08I think what this bench has
04:10is a little bit higher of a ceiling offensively.
04:14The Knicks bench was so bad last year offensively,
04:17especially in the playoffs.
04:19They struggled to provide any offense.
04:21Obviously, Tom Thibodeau did not go as deep into the bench.
04:23But now, because of the depth that they have
04:25with a Gershon Yabaselli, with a Jordan Clarkson,
04:28with a Deuce McBride,
04:30they can do a little bit more in terms of scoring
04:33and have more scoring punch.
04:35And so now you won't have as big of a drop-off
04:37when you go from the starters to the bench.
04:40And so I think that they're as deep as they've been,
04:43maybe as deep as they were two years ago,
04:45where they can comfortably go nine deep.
04:47And maybe even go 10 if you add a Shamit or a Brogdon,
04:50if Mike Brown chooses to do that.
04:52But I think the main thing here, Brandon,
04:54is the offensive ceiling for this bench
04:57is just a lot better, a lot higher,
05:00should be a lot more competitive.
05:01And the Knicks bench should be better
05:03than most other second units in this league.
05:06I have a little bit of concerns about the bench defensively,
05:10and we'll see how that all plays out.
05:11But offensively, I think this bench has as good as punches anyone
05:15with Yabusele, Clarkson, Deuce McBride.
05:18And, you know, we'll see what happens with center.
05:19Do they play an Ariel Hupporty?
05:21But this bench has enough offensive punch.
05:23And if you add someone like Malcolm Brogdon,
05:25who's a professional scorer, professional playmaker,
05:28that only increases the depth of this bench
05:30and the talent goes way up.
05:32So you've got to like the Knicks bench right now
05:34if you're a fan.
05:35But, you know, depth is only as good as when you need it,
05:38and you need guys ready, and you need talent.
05:40But they've got some talent on their bench right now.
05:43Expectations are riding high, and I've learned.
05:45Don't get caught into the expectations
05:47when it comes to a New York-based team.
05:50You can get let down, like, real fast.
05:55So, I mean, I like what I've seen so far.
05:57Very fast.
05:58All right, Dex, man.
05:58Appreciate you hopping on with this, bro.
06:01Appreciate you, brother.
