00:00What is going on again with Devin Williams?
00:04Another terrible outing Wednesday night down in H-Town.
00:07And a lot of people are saying on social media that they think he has hit rock bottom as a Yankee,
00:12but I hope they're wrong.
00:13We got our Yankees beat writer for the Post, Greg Joyce, who's down in Houston, Texas right now,
00:20getting ready to head over to the stadium for tonight's game.
00:23Greg, thanks for hopping on with this.
00:24I know you got to worry about tonight's game, but first, let's backtrack a little bit.
00:29I got to get your take on Aaron Boone and Devin Williams getting ejected last night.
00:34Do you think Williams has got like screwed on the calls,
00:37or do you think that there's just an overall frustration and emotions of one, giving up another lead,
00:44and two, just his overall inconsistent season that he's having right now?
00:51Yeah, I think it's a little bit of both.
00:52I think all that kind of factors into the frustration.
00:54And he didn't, you know, you can argue and say that much when he's walking off the mound.
01:00He just told Brian Walsh he missed four calls, and that was enough to give him the hook.
01:06But, you know, two things can be true, right?
01:09There were some missed calls there during Williams' outing,
01:11but he also still walked, you know, three batters, including one to force in the go-ahead run.
01:17So, you know, you're going to get bad calls every now and then,
01:22and you've got to be able to overcome it, which Williams wasn't last night.
01:26Yeah, I think there's certainly some frustration.
01:28It's by far not the season that he expected to have.
01:31The Yankees expected him to have.
01:33You know, it was a rough start, turned the corner, then had a rough patch again.
01:37Then, you know, he had a decent stretch the last couple weeks before this past week,
01:42and now he's, you know, two in a row where he's, you know, the other night in Chicago blew a lead.
01:48And then last night obviously came into a tie game and blew that one.
01:52So I think, you know, I think there's a lot of frustration in it.
01:56He feels like he got screwed by four pitches.
01:59There was two to Jesus Sanchez that turned into a walk.
02:03Another to Taylor Trammell, who ended up being the walk that forced him to run.
02:07So that being said, he gave up a leadoff double to Carlos Correa,
02:11who had struck out three times heading into that at bat.
02:15And so, you know, there's a lot of things.
02:17You know, there was a lot of other pitches that could have been the difference
02:20to kind of overcome that, which they didn't make.
02:24And then obviously Camilo Duvall came in after and kind of, you know, set fire to it.
02:28So, yeah, it was a rough night.
02:30The game that the Yankees felt they should have won.
02:32They're up three to, you know, four to one and weren't able to pull it out.
02:35And then obviously Cody Bellinger hits the late home run and pulls him back within one.
02:39But that just made how the eighth inning developed even more brutal
02:42because they still had a chance to win that game if it didn't get out of hand.
02:46So why is Aaron Boone still choosing to use Devin Williams last night,
02:52like a case like last night in high leverage situations,
02:55when every win and loss is so valuable at this time of the year?
03:00And why is he trying to get Devin Williams right now at this time of the year
03:06when you cannot afford to waste these games?
03:09Yeah, it's a good question.
03:10I think they still think they can turn him around.
03:12They've seen it in flashes this season.
03:15They're trying to pick some, you know, what they see as righty lanes for him.
03:20And so that's why Luke Weaver got the seventh inning last night.
03:23You know, there are some more lefty switchers in there.
03:27Even, you know, even Weaver gave up a run,
03:29but then they felt like there was a ready lane for Williams to be had.
03:33Obviously it didn't work out.
03:34You know, the thing is, like,
03:36I think that they don't have a ton of great options there.
03:39You know, they'd already used Fernando Cruz and Luke Weaver.
03:42I think they were trying to save David Bednar for if they had a lead.
03:46You know, you could argue, why not bring in Bednar there?
03:49You know, especially with the bases loaded, two outs,
03:52just to get that out and extend the game.
03:56I mean, he was going to the ninth inning,
03:57but then you've got to have him pitch the ninth inning.
04:00And then if you're still tied, you're going to extra innings.
04:02You know, you kind of have to map that out.
04:04And then who are you using?
04:06You know, there's a couple of guys down there that are still kind of,
04:09you know, Duvall still trying to find his footing after the trade.
04:12Hasn't certainly looked his best.
04:14It's coming over.
04:15So it's not like they have a ton of great options, I don't think.
04:18But I think they still believe that it's in there for Devin Williams.
04:22He's shown in flashes this year, but just not nearly consistently enough.
04:25And, you know, it's going to be interesting to see.
04:27Like you said, 20-plus games left in the season.
04:31Obviously still trying to get him right.
04:33And then, you know, we'll see.
04:35They put him in some low-leverage spots,
04:37try to rebuild that confidence, and it worked.
04:40And, you know, he was pitching well.
04:41And it seems like every time they think they have him back on the right track,
04:45he has a couple games where it just kind of goes off the rails again.
04:47So we'll see how they use him over the final 20-plus games here.
04:51His inconsistency throughout the course of his first year as a Yankee,
04:55you can see him being frustrated with that.
04:58But, I mean, you read Twitter, you read social media,
05:01the fan base is frustrated as well.
05:03And now it seems like that frustration is kind of boiling over to the team.
05:07Jazz Chisholm Jr. got into a heated conversation with that same ump that threw out Boone and Williams
05:14after he struck out looking to end the game.
05:17And Jose Caballero was tossed in Tuesday night's win in Houston.
05:22In the words of the Joker, in my favorite movie, Dark Knight Rises, why so serious?
05:29Like, why is this team so angry right now, Greg?
05:33Yeah, I think it's, you know, the stakes of this stretch.
05:36They're playing for a lot here.
05:37You know, this is a 12-game stretch against all playoff teams.
05:40Seems that they have to prove that they can beat.
05:43You know, but when you're entering this stretch,
05:44they hadn't, you know, played their best baseball against those kind of teams this season.
05:48And it's the teams they're probably going to face in October.
05:50You know, so they're playing for a lot.
05:52They're still trailing the Blue Jays in the division, trying to, you know, make up that deficit.
05:57And then the two guys that you mentioned, Chisholm and Caballero,
06:00the two guys that, you know, two emotional players where there are emotions on their sleeves,
06:04which can benefit them sometimes, but also kind of work against them in other times.
06:10You know, Jazz has talked a couple times this year about how he's tried to work on his emotions
06:14with umpires and do a better job of kind of reining that in.
06:17Obviously, we've seen it kind of come out at different times.
06:21You know, he had an injection in Cincinnati earlier this year.
06:25I think if, you know, if the game hadn't ended on that strikeout last night,
06:29maybe he gets tossed there.
06:31You know, obviously, I think mounting, you know, between the calls that Williams didn't get
06:36in the eighth inning and in the call that went against Jazz in the ninth, obviously,
06:39you know, that kind of combusted there for him.
06:41You know, Caballero on Tuesday night, you know, that's the second injection he's had as a Yankee.
06:46It was kind of a quick hook for him.
06:48You know, it didn't seem like he said all that much to get it,
06:51but he's another guy that, you know, he's known for being a guy that can get under
06:55opponent skin, at least.
06:57But obviously, he has that ability with umpires, too, because it's, you know,
07:01we've seen it twice a year in a couple weeks.
07:04But like I said, they're playing for a lot.
07:05You know, emotions are running high.
07:07Tensions are high.
07:08And every now and then, I think you kind of see it come out, especially with a couple
07:11guys that wear those emotions on their sleeves.
07:14Yeah, I'm one of those type players.
07:16I used to be that fake Draymond Green type player when I played football.
07:21But at the end of the day, something could cost you at the worst moment.
07:25And I'm hoping, I'm praying that doesn't happen to this team because, you know, they're
07:29trying to battle themselves out of a situation.
07:31Greg, let's end this thing on a positive note, man.
07:34Let's woosah a little bit here.
07:36My guy, Giancarlo Stanton, hit another home run Wednesday night.
07:40Can we give this guy his flowers, please?
07:43Yeah, it's been impressive what he's doing.
07:44That's 18 on the year, you know, after missing the first two and a half months of the season.
07:49And the biggest thing is, you know, he's been out there in the outfield almost every day.
07:53You know, they've been intentional with giving him rest days every now and then.
07:56You know, I wouldn't be surprised if he's out of the lineup tonight just to, you know,
08:01give him a chance to play all three this weekend against Toronto,
08:03which is another big series coming up.
08:06But, you know, for the most part, he's held his own in the outfield there.
08:08There was a couple of plays last night that, you know, one ball that got over his head
08:13that looked a little bit awkward.
08:15Aaron Boone said, nobody's catching that ball.
08:17You know, if Cody Bellinger is out there to get caught, who knows?
08:20And then, you know, there was another one where they, the Astros tested his arm on,
08:25I think he was feeling the ball when the guy was just about to round third and they went home
08:30and the guy scored, wasn't a perfect throw.
08:32That's going to happen.
08:33But by and large, you know, he's been serviceable out there,
08:36which is all you can ask for a guy like that, especially with what he's doing with his bat.
08:41It's been impressive.
08:42Obviously, they need that to continue here down the stretch.
08:46All right, Greg Joyce, man.
08:47Enjoy Houston and good luck with the travel situation, getting back to the Bronx tomorrow, man.
08:53Appreciate you having on.
08:55Thanks, Brandon.
