00:00Did you know that digital canvases now exist that exhibit generative art in real time?
00:05As I tap through these you can see exactly the same art piece but a different variant of that
00:09piece. Is there anything else that exists like this? Nope, nothing. This is the most exciting
00:15thing in contemporary fine art. Layer is a first-of-its-kind canvas for displaying digital
00:20and generative art. It's got a world-class GPU which allows it to play new art forever. This
00:25thing could outlive you and I and it wouldn't stop. Never loop. Let's go meet the man behind it.
00:29Angelo Sotira, CEO and founder of Layer. Tell me a little bit about the problem that existed in the
00:34digital art world and how you sought to conquer that problem with Layer. In more recent times there's
00:40been you know a really really big explosion obviously with generative art so art that is code-based. No
00:47other display to date is actually really able to play generative art. Layer has an onboard GPU which
00:53is the primary difference. That GPU allows you to run generative code live right on the display so you
00:59literally have living art that is maximally using the capabilities of that display so you see ultra
01:07you know full resolution. It cannot be higher resolution because it's controlling every pixel
01:11on the display. How many of these canvases exist out in the wild today? For right now there's only 125
01:17that we will make in the first edition. They're $22,000 a piece so you can understand we're going after
01:24you know sort of extraordinary collectors and people that we feel would be great as our first
01:29founder edition owners and members. The artists that you work with what is the partnership with
01:33them like what's the compensation model? We've introduced a new model right we we really wanted
01:38to introduce this concept of view time. We feel it's really important for an artist to be paid for every
01:43second that their art is being viewed. So we obviously have a subscription pool and we track view time
01:49meticulously and we ascribe that to the artists that are having their works viewed in a month
01:55and then we pay our royalties. You just told me that math was beautiful. Math has never been beautiful
01:59in my eyes so tell me about how is math beautiful and how do you make math into art? Yeah so I'm an
02:04artist but I write software to make art so that means I'm coding I'm writing words and numbers. Really
02:11what I'm trying to do is find beauty in math that I'm really that this kind of artwork is about
02:16adjusting numbers and changing you know changing numbers slightly and seeing all the different
02:21sort of combinations of colors and shapes and forms that come from math. As artists as creators we
02:27want to have a dialogue and we're trying to build tools for dialogue. It is a platform for artists to
02:32express themselves and that's the thing that we need more of in the world.
