00:00I'm Tayris Mongardi, and get your drag fix on page six.
00:07Welcome to Workroom Weekly.
00:08I'm Brian, and today we're joined by an extra special guest,
00:11fresh off Drag Race UK, season seven.
00:14It's Tayris Mongardi. Welcome to page six.
00:17Thank you so much for having me. How are you?
00:20I am doing great. I love the animal print.
00:22I love the beret. It's also giving a little D from Clueless.
00:26Yeah, I love Clueless as a reference point.
00:29Do you know what? I'm going to dox myself out here.
00:32I've never actually seen the film until I got back from the show.
00:38I just love the fashion references, and I just never got around to watching it.
00:42So when we're doing the makeover, Danny Harmo was quoting King Summit,
00:45and I was like, yeah, as if.
00:48You're like, whatever.
00:52Well, what do you think of the movie now? You finally caught up, right?
00:55Yeah, it's really camp. It's really camp.
00:57Every line is quotable.
00:59Yeah, and it didn't really make the idea,
01:01but I remember Rue telling me she thought I looked exactly like her.
01:04She was like, are you like illusion painting?
01:07And I was like, no.
01:09Because I can barely manage my own makeup.
01:11Let look and try to look like someone else.
01:12I'm actually surprised Stacey Dash, the actress who, of course, plays Dion,
01:16didn't respond because it is so eerie.
01:19Yeah, I'll take that. I'll take that.
01:21Well, let's get it going.
01:23Congrats on being part of the Fab Five and an all-around amazing season.
01:27We're going to get into some of your favorite and best moments,
01:30but first I want to talk about episode nine, which just aired.
01:33You were so funny in the roast.
01:36Beige three, I mean page three.
01:38I mean, perfect joke.
01:39Next up, we have Bones.
01:41Everyone clap for Bones.
01:42Yeah.
01:44Not the first time she's gotten the clap from a room full of strangers,
01:47and it will not be the last.
01:48How did it feel just being so good at stand-up comedy?
01:50Was this like in your blood all along?
01:52I mean, not good enough, apparently.
01:54No, honestly, I really enjoyed it.
01:55I think for me as well, I regularly host my own shows,
01:59like me or another queen together, pretty much every weekend.
02:03And I've done charity roasts and stuff before,
02:05so even though I didn't necessarily think it was my challenge to win,
02:09I really wasn't afraid of the challenge.
02:11And if anything, I still stand by all the material.
02:14I think maybe the only reason I potentially followed was that
02:17I can tell in some of the delivery I'm doing it like I'm hosting at the gig.
02:22Like, I'm not being like, I'm in the roast.
02:24So here is the setup for this joke, and here's the punchline.
02:28It was more like, oh, I'm talking, like, telling funny material,
02:31but in a really conversational way.
02:33So ultimately, I guess also prior to it airing,
02:36you just kind of have to emotionally prepare yourself
02:38for the worst-case scenario of it all.
02:40But watching back, watching it back, I was like,
02:43oh, that's actually kind of good.
02:44I'll stand by that.
02:46Yeah, absolutely.
02:47Everyone actually had some great punchlines,
02:49and at this stage in the competition, it's just like,
02:51it's sad, it sucks, someone has to go home,
02:53and this week, it was you.
02:55How did it feel getting sent home by your friend, Katrin Phelans?
03:00I think, obviously, at the time, in the moment,
03:03you saw my reaction.
03:05I didn't particularly enjoy it.
03:07But I think immediately, you can see by the time I've walked
03:10it to the workroom, I'm, like, smiling and laughing it off.
03:13Because I think, more than anything, that reaction for me as well
03:16was just really a sense of relief.
03:18Like, from the minute we got the call,
03:20from, like, the point of all the prep,
03:22to being on set, to, like, fighting every single week,
03:25I think that it was just, like, such an overwhelming release
03:28of emotions, to say, oh, it's done.
03:30Like, deep breath, have a chill.
03:33And the thing is, as well, with my elimination,
03:36like, it was all really nitpicky,
03:38and I can, I feel like I can comfortably say
03:40there was no challenge in which I, like,
03:43was utterly abysmal.
03:45Like, you know, which is nice to not have, like,
03:47tanked anything.
03:48I just think, really, I think Rue did me a favour,
03:52to be honest, because I think at that point,
03:54she had a look at the five of us,
03:55and she said, right, right now,
03:57who is not ready to be the next drag superstar
03:59for season seven?
04:00Maybe Tayris.
04:01Just send her back to the house,
04:02let her rest her feet, she'll have a cup of tea,
04:04maybe a biscuit or two if she's feeling crazy.
04:06And we'll see her in the finale anyway.
04:08Exactly.
04:08Yeah, obviously, like, I feel like I've got so much
04:10to be proud about for my time there,
04:12that being eliminated, of course, hurt at the time,
04:14but, like, in retrospect,
04:16like, we're literally people dressing in wigs,
04:17like, who actually cares?
04:20And, you know, personally, I think you should have stayed,
04:22but you and Katrin did give us
04:24a bit of a showmance for the ages,
04:26you know, can you give us a status
04:28on how things are going now?
04:29I've seen some cute Instagram posts since the show.
04:32It's so funny, because I remember,
04:34it just was not on my radar
04:35that something like that would happen.
04:37And I guess, like, it makes sense,
04:38because you're in, like, a pressure cooker,
04:40and you're just spending so much quality time with people,
04:43so you find them attractive,
04:44then, like, it's really easy to,
04:46I feel like you do,
04:46you skip all the first parts of dating,
04:48because you spend all day every day together.
04:51Listen, well, we've kind of said,
04:53we're going to nip it in the bud a little bit
04:56until the season's done,
04:56and then we'll really spill all the tea
04:57and everything that's going on.
04:58But what I will say is,
05:00did I text her about 20 minutes ago?
05:02Yes.
05:03So it can't be my bad books.
05:06So you're texting every day,
05:07you're keeping in touch.
05:09No, no, listen,
05:10when we're about,
05:11I still get some sugar, you know,
05:12but I need sugar for my tea, so.
05:14Exactly.
05:15I love the Nicki Minaj meme
05:17that you guys did on Instagram
05:18that was adorable.
05:20This is the thing.
05:21I'm very much her.
05:23My social media is, like, YouTube
05:25and, like, Twitter, you know, X.
05:27And then she's a TikTok girl.
05:29She was like,
05:30every time I'm in her company,
05:31she was like,
05:32we need to film these TikToks.
05:33I'm like, yes, miss.
05:35It was, like, strict wife,
05:37and I'm, like, the sad husband,
05:38like, yeah, okay, dear.
05:41So I thought she'll be like,
05:43oh, do this.
05:44And I'm like, okay, I'll do it.
05:45Oh, but listen,
05:46let's get any engagements.
05:46I can't complain.
05:47I know.
05:48That's what my nieces do with me.
05:49They're like,
05:50Uncle Brian, let's do a TikTok.
05:51I'm like, honestly,
05:52I have no idea what's happening right now.
05:55Honestly, she had to teach me
05:56how to get them to record, like.
05:59I was like, I'm only 28.
06:01Why am I, like, such a technophobe?
06:03Honestly.
06:03Well, let's get back to the season.
06:05It was, you know, full of surprises.
06:06It was very unexpected.
06:07A lot of, you know,
06:09topsy-turvy, I was calling it.
06:10You know, Queens with Rue badges
06:11went home the next week.
06:13We have Page 3, Bonnie and Clyde,
06:14Sally TM, who you sent home.
06:17But there were other Queens
06:19that never got a Rue badge,
06:21you know, and did very well.
06:22So what do you make of all this?
06:25Do the badges not really matter?
06:27Like, what's going on?
06:28You know what I think it is, rather?
06:30I think maybe,
06:32I think our season in particular
06:34challenges kind of a little bit
06:35of the formula and the rhetoric
06:37of what we expect from Jag Race.
06:39Because I know, for instance,
06:41for me at times,
06:42you kind of just come to expect,
06:44as a viewer,
06:45if people are doing well
06:46in the competition,
06:47like, if they falter,
06:49there might be some, like,
06:50accommodation made,
06:51or, like, oh,
06:53if she's got two badges,
06:54she'll only be low
06:55and not lip-syncing,
06:55because she's done a good job
06:56up until this point.
06:57Whereas I feel like maybe Rue
06:59was just really trying to, like,
07:00test our mettle
07:01and say, okay,
07:02we are taking this week to week.
07:04So if you win a badge,
07:05that's fab,
07:06that was that week,
07:06this is this week.
07:07And if you did the worst this week,
07:09you will be punished.
07:11Which is, um,
07:12which I also think, though,
07:14sometimes living it
07:15was quite confusing.
07:16But also, I guess,
07:17what it is good for
07:18is keeping the competition vibrant
07:21and, like,
07:21a good bloodline in it.
07:22Because I don't think at any point
07:24anyone thought
07:25it was, like,
07:27too far to come back.
07:28You know, because sometimes
07:29if you can see a queen's got four wins
07:30and you're there with no win,
07:32it's kind of over.
07:33But even coming into the roast,
07:35I was like, okay, well,
07:36if I win the roast,
07:37which I actually don't think
07:38now seeing the result
07:39was hugely out of the realm
07:40of possibility,
07:42then I've only,
07:42I've had one win
07:43and one bottom two placement.
07:45That's actually not that different
07:46to everyone else at this point.
07:48Because then,
07:48select would have the same,
07:49Bones would have two wins,
07:51two bottom twos,
07:52and L would have two wins,
07:53you know?
07:53So I think it was making
07:54for a really even game
07:55across the board,
07:56which meant everyone
07:57was still fighting
07:58so much harder
07:59at all times
07:59because it was never, like,
08:01the game was never over for you
08:02until it was over.
08:03That seemed like
08:04the vibe in the workroom
08:05definitely that everyone
08:06was on edge.
08:07No one thought
08:07they were safe.
08:08Yes.
08:09You know,
08:09maybe L the whole time
08:11was like,
08:11I've got this.
08:12But everyone else
08:13was a little bit like
08:13knives out,
08:15you know,
08:15which I love.
08:16Yeah.
08:16I think week five
08:18was the full
08:19Terrace Mongardi experience.
08:21Your talent show
08:22crushed it,
08:23literally.
08:24You did an original song,
08:26the dance,
08:26the outfit,
08:27and plus you
08:27crushed a watermelon
08:28with your legs.
08:30Did you always
08:31have this talent
08:32inside you?
08:35The thing is funny
08:36because I know
08:38initially,
08:39so when we were
08:39preparing for the talent show,
08:41I said,
08:41okay,
08:41what can I do?
08:42And I felt like
08:43doing some classical singing,
08:44but I was like,
08:45oh,
08:46I've seen it done
08:46really well
08:47in a couple
08:48of the past seasons
08:49like with Sephirika Stahl
08:50and Monet X Change.
08:52And I was like,
08:52oh,
08:52don't touch that.
08:54Can I out sing them?
08:55I don't know.
08:55So I'm not going to risk it.
08:57And then,
08:58so I was like,
08:58what can I do?
08:59So I also wanted to try
09:00and focus on a talent
09:01that wouldn't come up
09:03elsewhere in a competition.
09:05Like,
09:05I don't want to just
09:06like lip sync a song
09:08with no other piece to it,
09:10just like a fierce song.
09:11If I'm going to do girl groups,
09:13I'm going to do all these things.
09:14So for Halloween,
09:16I'd done like a pumpkin crushing thing
09:18as Scooby-Doo.
09:19Like I had a personal force
09:21just as Fred.
09:22And obviously that was seasonal.
09:23But I was like,
09:23I feel like
09:24if I really go ham at the gym,
09:26I'll have enough leg strength
09:27to do it with a watermelon.
09:29Because like,
09:29it wasn't that much harder.
09:32I would actually think
09:33a pumpkin would be harder
09:34to crush with your thighs
09:35than a watermelon.
09:36Maybe it was a little-
09:37You think that,
09:38because it's hollow on the inside.
09:40So we've actually got a breakdown
09:41as the initial surface area,
09:42whereas obviously
09:43the watermelon has like juice
09:45and like pith, meat?
09:47What do you call watermelon meat?
09:48Yeah, let's call it the meat.
09:49The watermelon meat.
09:50Yeah, yeah.
09:52Yeah, but listen,
09:53I don't think we've ever seen
09:54that on Drag Race before.
09:55I don't know if we'll ever see it again.
09:56I can say I was one of a kind that day.
09:58It was incredible.
10:00And that week,
10:01you also crushed the runway theme,
10:02having at large.
10:03I loved your nod to black dandyism.
10:05It was so chic.
10:07What was your inspiration for this?
10:08Was it a little bit of the Met Gala?
10:10Did that come into play?
10:12Yeah, so there were two kind of
10:14inspirations going into it.
10:16One, my...
10:17So a good duty of mine
10:18was on season four,
10:19Dakota Schiffer.
10:20And she was like,
10:21right, we were kind of bouncing back ideas
10:23from the runways.
10:24And she said, well,
10:25it had already been announced
10:26that the next year
10:27was going to be tailored to perfection.
10:28So I wanted to do something with that.
10:30But also,
10:31something I talked about on the show,
10:32which unfortunately didn't make it to there,
10:33was there used to be a drag artist
10:35in Brighton called Madeline Hatter,
10:37who's this really sweet girl.
10:39And she passed away a couple years ago
10:41at age 19.
10:42She had meningitis.
10:44And so I knew if I made it to the show,
10:45I wanted to be able to do something
10:46in reference to her.
10:48So I also had like a little bit
10:50of Mad Hatter influence
10:51in some of the styling of that.
10:53That's like a little salute to a cat
10:55who was, yeah,
10:57just a really lovely,
10:58lovely girl,
10:59a really nice gem.
11:00But yeah,
11:01so I think,
11:02I think a lot of my,
11:03everything on the show,
11:04I brought to the show,
11:05I said,
11:07it's got to mean something to me.
11:08Like if it's just a decorative object,
11:10the only,
11:11the only runway I'd argue
11:12had no meaning to me at all
11:14was probably my nicest one,
11:15which is the crispest one.
11:17But I just think everything I brought,
11:19I was like,
11:20if it doesn't mean anything to me,
11:22I'm just spending a lot of money
11:23on a decorative object.
11:25So I know,
11:27am I the fashion queen?
11:28Probably not,
11:29not now,
11:30probably not ever.
11:31But what I can do
11:32is make sure everything,
11:33I can stand by the substance
11:34and the heart
11:35behind all of my looks.
11:37I love the ho-ho holiday look
11:38that you had.
11:39You were just like,
11:40an ice princess.
11:41It was just so,
11:42the blue is so beautiful.
11:43And another look
11:44that I was gagging over,
11:45we'd already talked about it,
11:46but last week's Celebrity Hun makeover challenge,
11:49the clueless look.
11:50I mean,
11:51it's just,
11:52you're tall,
11:52you're six foot six,
11:54next to Dani,
11:56you know,
11:56you towered over her.
11:58The visual was so cool
12:00and just so exactly right.
12:02I mean,
12:02I was,
12:03I loved it.
12:04Yeah.
12:04That's so sweet.
12:05And I think especially
12:06with that one as well,
12:07I was like,
12:07okay,
12:08trying to think of
12:09an easily recognizable concept
12:11because I had another idea
12:12for the makeover,
12:14but I'm not going to tell you what that is.
12:15I might need to save that for all stars.
12:17But I said,
12:18okay,
12:19what can I do?
12:19Because I think
12:20a lot of what I present on the show
12:22and in my drag in general
12:24is very like,
12:25it's very black.
12:26So I was like,
12:27okay,
12:27I don't want to be paired
12:28with a white person to say,
12:29how do you feel about dreadlocks?
12:31You know?
12:31So I was like,
12:32what can I also do
12:33that like speaks to my sense of like,
12:36my love for like 90s,
12:37noughties,
12:37aesthetic and culture,
12:39but also that allows me
12:40to still like play with blackness,
12:43but doesn't also impose that
12:44on my makeover partner.
12:45And I was like,
12:46oh,
12:46Cher and Dion.
12:47I was like,
12:48because anyone can be Cher
12:49out of any race.
12:50And me,
12:51I was like,
12:51I also just want an excuse
12:52to get that lovely hat.
12:53So yeah,
12:55I really enjoyed the makeover.
12:57I think meeting Danny
12:58and just having that day
12:58was probably my favorite day.
13:00It was so sweet.
13:01And that hat was everything.
13:04Thank you, I do.
13:05And I also,
13:05you know,
13:06speaking of,
13:06you know,
13:07respecting the culture,
13:08I loved your,
13:09the outfit you wore
13:10for the roast.
13:11It was just exactly right.
13:12It was so chic
13:13and beautiful
13:14and stylish.
13:15It was very cool.
13:16Do you know what?
13:17That's actually just
13:17off the rack.
13:19Yeah.
13:19I just pulled it off the rack
13:20and then just rhinestoned
13:21like every single patch.
13:22And I remember Rune telling me
13:23like,
13:24this is one of the best
13:24things you've worn.
13:26And I was like,
13:26oh,
13:26it's literally
13:27from grassfields.com.
13:28I didn't tell her that.
13:31No,
13:32it costs $1,000.
13:33Yeah,
