00:00Liberty have finally, finally, after a long search, announced the hiring of the next coach.
00:05Well, they haven't announced it, but it has come out. It's been reported that it will be Chris DeMarco, Golden State Warriors assistant.
00:11So an NBA coach now coming over to the Liberty. I guess I'll start with this first really quickly.
00:18What was your reaction to the hiring, you know, after this being long drawn out? Right.
00:25If it feels long, I know people always want quick results. It was long.
00:29OK, so as long as you can say it was long, you have to cover it. You can say that.
00:32I guess we'll start with this was like, what was your reaction to hiring?
00:36And when you look at his Chris DeMarco's reputation around the Warriors organization, a team that you have some ties to from covering before early in your career.
00:44What about him do you think appealed the most to the Liberty front office to make this hire?
00:49So first off, I want to talk about the search because it was extremely long and they had a bunch of different candidates that they brought in.
00:55And there was multiple days of interviews, meeting with different people within the organization, certain exercises and like what if scenarios were thrown at these candidates.
01:06And I know from talking to several people that were part of the interview process, the length of this this search did grow weary on some people.
01:18And I think like DeMarco emerged late in the process, like literally within the last few weeks as a as a candidate and went through the process.
01:27And he just really impressed. He impressed Jonathan Kolb and the rest of Liberty with obviously his championship pedigree.
01:33He's been with the Warriors since 2012.
01:35I think loyalty is also something that's worth noting there is the longest tenured person at Golden State and impressed with the fact that he has been working with the dynasty and been a part of a dynasty winning four championships.
01:50He currently runs the Warriors defense, which is top 10 in the league that has only gotten more athletic and faster.
01:58And the Warriors roster is obviously one of the oldest, if not the oldest roster in the league.
02:01So that's something to say about this, the schematics of everything.
02:05And then also, I think just the fact that he has shown proven success in a head coaching position.
02:12He took a low resource program with the Bohemian men's national team and had them on the brink of the country's first ever Olympic appearance in men's basketball.
02:23They obviously didn't make it in Paris in 2024, but I think the way that that team came together and competed and looked, I think like that was something really telling.
02:36And then at the end of the day, too, because I talked to a few people about the process and about Chris specifically, I think it came down to, you know, who he is as a person.
02:46And I think that obviously is extremely important as a head coach.
02:49You have to be able to, you know, be relatable to people.
02:52You have to be under like managing egos, managing emotions, managing the waves of the highs and lows of a season.
02:59And I think that given his experience, you know, being around Steve Kerr, who's obviously one of the best player coaches perhaps ever, that seeing how he's managed that team that has like grown old together, I think that kind of also maybe gave him a certain leg up in the interview process.
