A new report has found confidence in the state's water management agency is dwindling amid concerns over WA's drying climate. The government says the Department is doing what it can to protect water supply as the population grows, but the Nationals aren't convinced.

00:00With summers leaving parts of WA looking like this, and this, managing water supply is crucial.
00:10But a growing number of stakeholders fear the department responsible isn't up for the job.
00:15So this really does bring into question the work of the department, the work of the minister and the confidence that stakeholders have.
00:24The Department of Water and Environmental Regulations annual report finding just 38% of stakeholders think it's effectively managing WA's water, down from 63% in 2023-24, well below its target of 65%.
00:40Despite this, the department has the government's backing.
00:43I believe they've done a good job in supporting and protecting our water supply, noting that they've worked really hard to ensure that happens.
00:52But also, we have a growing population and growing demand.
00:56The Nationals disagree.
00:58Premier, is 38% the new benchmark for excellence under Labor?
01:04Mr Speaker, I might just make the observation, it's going to be a short one, that 38% is significantly north of your primary vote.
01:14The department has been under increasing pressure.
01:18A scathing Auditor General report in June revealed it has no idea how much water is being pulled from the ground each year, or whether any is being taken illegally.
01:30Well, this is the latest in a number of different revelations about how bad the management is of our natural environment, and how many things keep cropping up.
