00:00Okay, let's start with you. First of all, I have loved you since Gossip Girl XOXO, and now you gave me two more things that I love from Nobody Wants This, and that's Matzo Ballers, the team name, and then Lila. Can you tell everyone what that is?
00:20Yes, in an episode mid-season, I refer to my frenemy as, we used to be Lila's, and it is love you like a sister.
00:29Now I'm going to be saying that all the time, just so you know. I like to do that. Okay, so first of all, congratulations both of you, Emmy nominations. You won a Critics' Choice Award, right?
00:39Yes, thank you.
00:40And you executive produced this show, right? So this is a big deal. Season two is dropping, and I've watched all ten episodes, and loved it. For me, the writing is spectacular. The writing is just incredible.
00:57You have a full circle moment here with your wife in real life, Leighton. She joins the show. There's another secret, I won't mention, appearance by somebody who I also love and adore.
01:09And this show was created by somebody I happen to know, Erin Foster. And I happen to know it's loosely based on her life. So did she share anything with you, Kristen, about her life to help you prepare for your character, Joanne?
01:28Oh, yeah, she over shares. That's kind of Erin's, that's kind of her vibe. I mean, the reality is, like, whenever I play a character, I try to make it 50% me, so it can feel authentic and honest in my body.
01:42And I'm probably, you know, a little goofier than Erin is, because she's so elegant. But I also had all this time leading up in the development process to spend time with Erin and look at, like, her mannerisms and how she sees the world and the thought process she really had.
01:58When she met her husband and how she had this sort of metamorphosis, which is what she's writing about in this show. And then also, you know, doing secret things like taking pictures of her hairstyles and creating a folder on my phone of, like, this is what I want Joanne to look like, because I want it to be sort of a tribute to Erin. So, yeah, she was there through the whole process.
02:17Was she on set with you the whole time?
02:19Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So it was kind of great to have the person I was playing right there. It made my job very easy.
02:27I guess.
02:28And I often asked her when I was stumped, like, wait, how would you say this? Like, read this for me. Just, like, say this out loud. And, like, literally ask her for a line reading. Not because I want, well, because I did want to imitate her, but also because I needed to feel her say it. Because she has such a specific, like, um.
02:47She has a tone.
02:48Yeah, she has a tone.
02:49She does.
02:49Yes.
02:50And it's delightful, but it's so specific. And it was hard for me in the beginning, but it was great to have her there.
02:55So funny. Okay, so what are you hoping that people will take away from season two?
03:01Laughs. Enjoy. I hope people enjoy it. I hope.
03:05I did.
03:06People see themselves.
03:08I cried, too.
03:09Ugh.
03:09There were tears.
03:10That's great.
03:11There was laughter.
03:12Your patience as Joanne.
03:14I just want to steal some of it because I am the least patient human on the planet.
03:19You think Joanne is patient.
03:20Well, you are really patient. Noah, your character Noah is really patient.
03:24I think she's, I think she's, I think she's quite patient.
03:25But you are very patient.
03:27I do, considering the situation.
03:30Sure, sure.
03:30You know, I think you're very, very patient.
03:34I'd second that.
03:35Okay, good. Well, I'm glad you agree.
03:37All right, so as I mentioned, congratulations.
03:39You got a nomination and awards.
03:41You guys, this is the best.
03:43The chemistry between the two of you, forget about it.
03:45At one point, I kind of questioned, hmm, is this leading into the real life?
03:50But then I realized that you've worked together so many times.
03:55But you've worked together so many times that it's like brother and sister besties, right?
04:00So, yeah.
04:02It's very sibling because Adam and I have, like, we talk about everything and, like, on set in our off time.
04:09But 50% of those are arguments.
04:12And we argue very well.
04:14But we have differing opinions on a lot of things.
04:17It's not enough to keep it interesting.
04:18Yeah.
04:18Keep it spicy.
04:19That's right.
04:19Keep the romance alive.
04:20Now, you are Jewish in your real life, correct?
04:23I'm Jewish.
04:24And your wife is not, correct?
04:26No.
04:26So did that play a part in your character preparation?
04:29No, funny enough, she's probably more Jewish than me at this point.
04:32Oh, my God, that's the best.
04:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:34So, no, it wasn't like a cultural divide that we bridged.
04:37Although, there was some culture.
04:39I suppose there is.
04:40You know, I mean.
04:41There has to be a little, right?
04:42Yeah, I mean.
04:43I went the opposite.
04:44Born Jewish, converted to Catholicism.
04:46Wow.
04:47Nobody does that.
04:47Nobody does that.
04:48Call on me.
04:49You zagged.
04:49I did that.
04:50Yeah.
04:50Yeah.
04:51Yeah, there's some cultural divides, but I think it also has.
04:54She's kind of from, she's from a lot of places, but primarily the South, and I'm not.
05:00And, you know, even that has its own different rhythms.
05:03Last question.
05:04You play a rabbi.
05:05Do you have a rabbi that you go to a temple in real life that you were able to talk to
05:11about preparing to play a rabbi?
05:12No.
05:13However, I've been chatting to a rabbi at my kid's school lately, and we've become friendly,
05:19and I'm having breakfast with him next week.
05:21So, I have a rabbi day.
05:22Are you using any of that in your character?
05:24I'm sure I will.
05:24Okay, good.
05:25Yeah.
05:25All right, great.
05:26Thank you so much, you guys.
05:27Good to see you.
