00:16reminiscent of elaine from seinfeld yeah just saying i don't know if you use some of that for

00:22that your character esther please forgive me but she's a loud mouth yeah she's very outspoken imagine

00:29you need to be forgiven for that and she's a badass yeah right which i really really love

00:35um you seem to break with your character i know season one you did this and i've watched all 10

00:42episodes of season two the writing is just so incredible you guys are very good you guys are

00:47so lucky but you seem to break stereotypes about uh jewish women and jewish moms can you tell us a

00:54little bit about that your character sure i mean i don't really know too much about i'm sort of just

01:00doing what i'm doing i'm not like out there in an attempt to either fit into something or break

01:06something i'm sort of just doing what i'm doing trying to play a real authentic grounded sometimes

01:14fired up person who has a lot of dimensions and is very loyal loves her husband but maybe not

01:22yeah no i mean i think ultimately um she does and that's what's so hard about it and i think

01:30lots of grown-up decisions being made here of like just because we love each other if i had to make

01:35these decisions are they the ones i'd be making um and i think she's trying to break out of this

01:41mold she put herself in of just like being on the straight line of a baby a marriage and a baby

01:47and a mother-in-law and this is my life and taking the kid to school she's like halt what do i want

01:53what am i doing i need to be having more fun and so i'm just yeah the multi-dimensionality of her in

01:58season two is really fun to play really really fun what do you love and what do you hate about esther

02:02oh interesting i i don't know if i hate anything about her i i love that she is strong and loyal

02:15and opinionated um i do definitely right she definitely sticks her foot in her mouth and

02:22says things in a way that are that's unnecessarily harsh sometimes they're forgivable but i feel like

02:28in season two she catches herself like in that sweet moment where they're in the closet and he's

02:33asking her what jacket and she's getting ready and you're ignoring him and she's like i don't care

02:37whatever jacket you want to wear like i don't but then you felt bad after exactly then you have the

02:43jewish guilt she's a person i know she's like why did i why did i just snap and i think that's real

02:49we've all done that where like someone's like oh your tone you know easy on and so i think like

02:55i don't know that i hate anything about her but i think she's growing good we like growth and you

03:01play the rabbi's brother and sasha and did you have to research with a real rabbi or a rabbi's

03:09brother to take on that role considering you came from commander bill yeah still can't get over

03:14the so i am i'm just not a religious person and never have been so my knowledge spiritual

03:21not in particularly really yeah um so so my knowledge of really any religion was pretty

03:29minuscule so i did do a lot of research about about judaism and and talked with friends of mine

03:38who grew up here because there i think there is also a very specific sort of la cultural judaism

03:43that is in the show and so i mean like versus new york or versus yeah versus new york versus

03:48the midwest like this sort of like west side jewish culture that i spoke to friends that grew

03:56up in la in the jewish culture in la and just like the the diff what it meant what it was like and

04:02so i tried to do a lot of research on judaism and uh and it was great like judaism kind of rules like

04:09yeah it's a good one oh so now maybe you're thinking about maybe entering the tribe

04:13uh i don't i mean like look i love an ensemble i love i love a good tribe but i i i've never been

04:21my thing i just take little bits like i love the argument parts of judaism i'll take that

04:25also being around me as much as you are like you play a good jew oh thank you thank you all right

04:32real quickly um your kids were huge fans right yeah and is this why you took this part i know you

04:38brought them to the set i brought them to the set they love the show it's one of the first things

04:42that i've done that they can actually watch which is fun and you know ultimately like i didn't it was

04:49almost like a fringe benefit of oh this is cool like i'll be doing something my kids can actually

04:54see like it wasn't why i took it but it was it is like kind of a wonderful thing that's something

04:59they can watch and enjoy you brought them to the poor uh episode they would have loved that right
