00:13I mean, I feel like every few years you get one, where you just feel like overwhelmed,
00:17you're like, I cannot get through this.
00:20I think most recently, it's just like having a kid, you know, I have a kid,
00:24and it feels like everything everywhere all at once, you know, it feels like too much is
00:28happening and you don't know if you're doing a good job or a bad job and there's no uh there is
00:33no right way to do anything and so you're just kind of trying to survive that um so for for me
00:38right now it's it's probably just fatherhood is it feels like overwhelming one of the cool things
00:43about the everything bagel became that it that it wasn't just scary that it was also kind of like
00:51the the piece that jobu gets from from nihilism and and i feel like i i felt both those feelings
00:59when covid hit uh you know we finished the movie and suddenly this thing happened that made me
01:04suddenly like question what matters you know and and just watch the whole world shut down
01:09and have to just like sit at home and some days that was so awful and other days it was this kind
01:16of like full thing that i kind of learned to appreciate uh so it was very weird to edit this
01:23movie while trying to understand you know the pandemic um but i also feel like that's probably
01:31one of the reasons why it's resonating with people is because we all just went through that everything
01:36went everyone went through a version of that and maybe it's actually really um yeah our our film is
01:42is speaking to it's more relatable than it was when we wrote it when i first wrote it exactly yeah
01:47in some ways i think the first part of the movie the everything section is even more frenetic than
01:54the second one because the characters are so uh caught up in their daily routines that they kind of need
02:00this multiversal detachment to reconnect and to find a dialogue within the family and so paradoxically
02:08they are constantly moving in the second part of the film but it is that movement which allows
02:13uh family ties to rebalance and so nobody is left alone in this multiverse and it turns out to be the
02:21place where families can uh work on their issues so i wanted to ask you how do you think this concept
02:28of the multiversal dialogue can fit for families in 2022
02:32oh man i mean i think one of the reasons why we were excited about the multiverse as a idea within
02:40the film wasn't just because it was like a fun fantastical um narrative element but because it felt
02:46like it represented exactly what it feels like to to exist within any community now like and no matter
02:52what family you're in um that family unit is fractured now because of how easily accessible all these
03:00other communities are for the internet and so uh you might have a father who is sucked into um not
03:06only his work life but also maybe he's really into sports or maybe he's really into um q anon i don't
03:12know uh and you might have a daughter who into bts and she's sucked into the k-pop world and and your
03:18your your brother might be a gamer and so everyone is constantly speaking different languages he literally
03:24speaks the language from avatar exactly i don't understand what he's saying sometimes exactly and so
03:29everyone has these different communities and they are literally speaking different languages and so
03:33it's becoming so much harder you know you know a lot of people talk about the family unit and what
03:38it means and you know the nuclear family kind of doesn't make sense anymore but there still has to be
03:42some version of it that um that that you know some version of it that you can create um despite the
03:49fact that uh you know our current system is trying to pull it apart and so i think that's kind of
03:54something we're playing with with the multiverse in this film um it was definitely a goal at the
03:58beginning of the movie was to make it just a family in a laundromat and yet make that sequence
04:04just as overwhelming as the sci-fi stuff later um and uh and yeah it's been interesting hearing
04:13some people get more people disagree about which part's more overwhelming you know yeah some people
04:19do find the the multiverse a lot more manageable than like just breakfast with your parents at the
04:27you know and how meaningful was it for you to um feature an all asian cast in a blockbuster because
04:35your movie looks like one for sure and what inspired you to um put together such a comical group of
04:43actors at first sight but which actually becomes very suitable for a multi-gerous movie like yours
04:49yeah the um the funny thing is when we first shared the script with michelle yo it was actually
04:57four crazy rich agents had come out and so you know until then no one even knew if um hollywood
05:04would even would even fund a movie with like an all asian cast and she actually she actually said
05:09this is a very uh very brave of you guys to to write this movie with with a chinese family
05:14um but i i do think one of the things that we've always done is just kind of um ignore what the
05:21system is doing and ignore what is kind of um within the trends and just kind of keep your heads
05:27down and write what we wanted to write and um it it took us so long to write this movie that by the
05:33time we were finished uh the multiverse was cool and asians were cool and but you know it just it just
05:39it just happens to work out that way but um to us it was just exciting to um yeah for me to be able
05:47to dive into my family background and um make something that felt you know personal in that way
05:54um but we did not we did not expect it to become such a um such a uh important moment for a lot of
06:05a lot of people within the the asian american community but also just the the asian diaspora
06:09just people all around the world watching this film and feeling seen through it is like has been
06:13really um even more um satisfying and and um powerful than we expected because it's that was
06:20definitely not the goal we were not trying to like rally the asians or anything like that it was just
06:24a very selfish um a lot of our filmmaking comes from a very selfish place like which the other like
06:30selfish no-brainer to us was like oh our favorite action movies are hong kong movies yeah like so so
06:38we were just like oh it like like there's personal things we can draw on but also like what if we get
06:44michelle yo cool would that be you know like we we weren't um uh yeah that was just selfish we're
06:51just like they're those are the best action movies we can make one of those yeah
