00:00How much of your personal experience is in this story?
00:03Well, my personal experience started from the title, Left-Handed Girl,
00:08because I was a left-handed girl and I got corrected very early on in kindergarten.
00:13And, you know, the idea of this story actually started from a piece of memory in high school.
00:18My grandfather saw me use knife with my left hand, so he scolded me and he told me left hand is devil's hand and never used left hand.
00:26So that's how this whole story started.
00:31The characters are very well characterized. How did you work with the actresses?
00:36Well, working with the actresses are really special because I basically gave them the script
00:44and I asked them to study and put their own life experience into the role.
00:50So we didn't have any rehearsal intentionally because I didn't want them to over-rehearse
00:55because the family dynamic in this film is really tense.
01:00You know, people, it looks like they don't like each other.
01:03You know, they love each other, but they couldn't tell each other.
01:06So I feel like I wanted to keep that very organic kind of feeling
01:11where they prepare their role and then come to set,
01:14they kind of interact the first time and to capture that spontaneous.
01:18You are a director and producer. Do these two professions conflict with each other?
01:26I don't think so because from the very beginning, you know, the first project I worked on Takeout,
01:31I was a writer, producer, director, everything.
01:35So that's the spirit. I think that's the independent film spirit
01:40that I always, I always possessed, you know, being able to do everything on set.
01:48The cinematography is a reminiscent of the Florida project,
01:52very lively even if it tells dramatic events.
01:55How did you take care of this aspect?
01:58Well, you know, this film is really like a lot of memories I have going on in Taiwan.
02:04So to capture, you know, those moments, I really try really hard to,
02:11especially in Taiwan, you know, in Night Market,
02:15you know, I actually communicate with my cinematographer.
02:19I want to show this film as a child's point of view.
02:24So we had a lot of conversation.
02:27I want him to capture everything from the little girl's level
02:32and also, you know, with all the color and the sound,
02:35like more enhanced, just like how kids they are,
02:39they really, you know, for their point of view is so fresh.
02:43You know, they see different things.
02:46They see things that we adults don't see anymore.
02:49So just from that point of view, you know, I want that very sense of wonder,
02:55you know, the kids going to this adult environment
02:58and how they naturally feel and how they're trying to understand everything around them.
