00:00I'm an Anstead, and when it comes to cars, I can fix almost anything.
00:08Oh, there she goes!
00:11When it comes to houses, not so much.
00:17I'm supercharging my mission.
00:20Oh my god!
00:22Fixing up and flipping eight more classic motors.
00:25You look like Laura Denardi, you two!
00:29Because the 500-year-old farmhouse I bought for my parents to retire in...
00:34...is a crumbling money pit.
00:37I would brace yourself, cos it ain't gonna be cheap.
00:40But I won't be defeated.
00:42Yeah! It's beautiful, isn't it?
00:44I want Mum and Dad moved in before summer ends.
00:47We'll call it glamping, shall we?
00:49Right, that's the spirit.
00:51And with the help of family...
00:54I did it!
00:55...and my petrolhead pal, Duncan.
00:58Yay!
00:59Come on then, let's go!
01:01I'm determined to turn cars into cash.
01:05Whoa!
01:06Even...
01:07...if it kills me.
01:08Whoa!
01:09Whoo!
01:10It's only six weeks till Mum and Dad are due to move in.
01:22With just two out of the four rooms finished, I'm behind schedule.
01:25And there's a major space I haven't factored in.
01:28The entrance hall.
01:30So I'm calling on my little brother Michael to kickstart the job.
01:33The vision is this.
01:35We'll vault the hallway.
01:36So you'll see the beautiful, quirky beams.
01:39When you come into the front door, you've got this really grand, double storey, vaulted, sort of landing area.
01:45Yeah, surface area. There's quite a lot to do.
01:48Yeah, I'm pretty overwhelmed at the moment. I've got to get the cars done.
01:52And the problem is that if we don't keep pushing for it on the house, we're not going to make the deadline.
01:57So I need you to demo this.
01:59It is the nastiest job, though.
02:01I know.
02:02Delegation.
02:03But I do want to hit something.
02:11While the inside's fallen behind schedule.
02:15I feel better for breaking something.
02:17Duncan's also battling to get the outside plastered before summer ends.
02:22But apparently, he's found a car he reckons will give the house kitty a much needed boost.
02:28What have you found?
02:29BMW.
02:30Okay, which one?
02:31E30.
02:32325.
02:33That is a boring car.
02:35Back in the 80s, early 90s.
02:37We're not in the 80s or early 90s.
02:39That car dominated the touring car series.
02:42It's a boring saloon.
02:43Ah, you're wrong.
02:44You know, these cars have got a cult following.
02:46Yeah, I'm just not in that cult.
02:48Just go and have a look.
02:49Bring it up.
02:50Please.
02:51Why do you like it so much?
02:52I had one.
02:53Oh, there you go.
02:54So we're actually, you're basically, let's go buy a car that you have.
02:57No, no, we have to be business-like.
03:00We have to make sensible decisions.
03:01But this is business.
03:02I think these are sleepers at the moment.
03:04Yeah, they're sleepers at the moment.
03:05But how long are they going to be sleepers for?
03:07Until we put this one up for sale.
03:09You'll love it.
03:10I won't love it.
03:11I feel like some sort of spoiled teenage brat.
03:18Not happy that I am driving into North London to go see a car that I have absolutely no interest in.
03:25It's boxy.
03:26It's functional.
03:27It's not a standout car.
03:28You're not going to stop in the street and go,
03:30God, look at that.
03:31But to be fair to Duncan, Duncan does know his cars really well.
03:35So when your friend says, trust me on this, you have to trust him.
03:40Launched in 1982, the BMW E30s worshipped by people like Duncan for being the ultimate driver's car.
03:48It spawned the high-performance M3.
03:51So revered it was nicknamed God's Chariot.
03:55They're the type of car that people like to drive fast.
03:58And the worry is that these cars, if they're bad ones, are quite notorious.
04:02The engine's tired.
04:04Brake issues, oil issues.
04:06Because I don't like the car, that doesn't mean that there isn't a market for it.
04:09The types of people that lusted after this car and they remembered it as a kid
04:12are actually the right sort of age now to go and afford one.
04:15The car's on the market for seven and a half grand.
04:18Duncan's promised me restored E30s fetched between 10 and 15 at auction.
04:23I find that hard to believe.
04:25Oh man, that's the car.
04:27That's the car.
04:28It's freaking white.
04:32Call Duncan.
04:35Hey.
04:36Dude, you know the car's white.
04:38Don't tell me you knew the car was white.
04:40It'll be fine. White's good.
04:42White's never good.
04:44Trust me, this car, this is the one.
04:47This will be a good boy.
04:49All right.
04:51I'm going to hang up on you.
04:52Yeah.
04:55The owner's called Maneer.
04:58OK, let's put my happy face on.
05:00Here we go.
05:02Morning.
05:03Hey, you must be Maneer, right?
05:04Morning. Yes.
05:05Ann. Nice to meet you.
05:06It's a pleasure to meet you, man. So this is your baby.
05:08Yes, it is.
05:09Got the car about seven years ago, so I've got all the paint work done.
05:15Front bumper, the wing got fixed.
05:18Is there any mechanical stuff you've done?
05:20No mechanical jobs whatsoever.
05:22Yeah.
05:23So what does it drive like?
05:24Stops, steer, starts?
05:25It drives just fine.
05:26It's a legendary car, as well as I'm concerned.
05:28It's one of the best cars ever made.
05:30You obviously don't tell your friends that that's the best car ever made.
05:34Oh, yes, I do.
05:35Everyone around here loves the car.
05:37They always take pictures when they see it.
05:39This car's famous around here.
05:41Yeah, in the neighbourhood.
05:42Everyone knows the car.
05:43All right.
05:44Do you mind giving me, say, 10, 15 minutes, have a little look around?
05:47Of course.
05:48Of course, yeah.
05:49I mean, it's the straightest 325 I think I've seen in a long time.
05:55Sits really nicely on the road.
06:00Panels are really good.
06:05Oh, yeah.
06:06That is tidy.
06:11This is an ECU car.
06:16So electrics are normally an issue.
06:20The dash tends to light up like a Christmas tree, which it has.
06:24Oh, man, it's an auto.
06:26You know, if this was a manual, I'd be like, actually, Duncan.
06:31Rear wheel drive, manual car.
06:34Yeah, it's a kind of 80s icon.
06:36And I could probably then ignore the fact that it's white.
06:40But it's an auto.
06:43It's pretty tidy in here, though.
06:46Seats look good.
06:47Carpet looks great.
06:48Start her up.
06:55She sounds really lovely.
06:57Yeah, there's something about that BMW straight-six engine.
07:00Just burbles away.
07:02Oh, but if it had a manual, this could be a fun car.
07:07Yeah, the dash warning lights are a worry.
07:09And the brain of this car is saying that there's an issue.
07:12But as I sit here today, I don't know what the issue is.
07:15Hmm.
07:16Let's check out the engine.
07:19Hoses are a little bit frayed.
07:32Oh, that's leaking.
07:33I can hear it.
07:34Oh, yeah.
07:35There's a definite leak in there.
07:37Yeah, the heat shield's missing off the bonnet as well.
07:40Probably taken off when Muneer had the car painted.
07:43Because he spent all of his efforts on the visuals,
07:46and not a single bit of effort on anything mechanical.
07:50So cosmetically, she's nice.
07:52Mechanically, I mean, she could be a can of worms.
07:56To make it a risk worth taking,
07:59I need Muneer to come down from seven and a half grand.
08:02You will not find a BMW E30 in this condition for that price.
08:07Let's just say six and a half, knock a grand off.
08:09I think we're just gonna cut it in the middle.
08:12We call it £7,000.
08:14Six, seven, fifty.
08:16Six, eight, fifty.
08:17Right, we have a deal, buddy.
08:19Six, eight, fifty.
08:21Duncan picks it up.
08:22That's great.
08:23You can talk about BMWs all day long.
08:25I'm sure he'll be loving it.
08:26It's the greatest car.
08:27No, Muneer, it's not the greatest car.
08:30And I hope it's worth the risk.
08:32Cos I'll need all the cash I can get to push on with the hallway.
08:35Which is taking Michael and Dad longer to demolish than I hoped.
08:39How much more do you think you'll get done today?
08:41All of it has to get done.
08:42To get the electricians in.
08:43Otherwise, it's gonna push us back a couple of days.
08:45And to get the scaffolding down.
08:47Can't even open the front door at the moment.
08:48It's gotta come down today, yeah.
08:49Got no choice.
08:55Once it's demoed, renovating that vast space won't be cheap.
09:00I just hope Duncan's right.
09:02And my six thousand eight hundred and fifty pound white BMW E30
09:07is more valuable than I think.
09:09I know once I pull into the yard,
09:11he is gonna give me some grief over it.
09:14Once he's made his mind up he doesn't like something,
09:17he'll be like a women hammer drill.
09:19We're gonna have a little battle on our hands, I can see it.
09:32Don't worry, I've got ya!
09:37I don't know why I was thinking it might look better when it got here.
09:42What do you mean man?
09:43This is a proper classic.
09:45You realise that the burden of this is a hundred percent on you?
09:49I think there's a good market for these.
09:51Really?
09:52So I tell you what, if we don't make any money on this,
09:55the plastering's for free.
09:56Yeah.
09:57Yeah?
09:58Well in that case I can't lose.
09:59In fact I'm half hoping that we make three pence on this,
10:02which I think we probably will.
10:03And in which case, I get the plastering done.
10:06Lovely deal!
10:08Didn't think that's through did I?
10:10No you didn't, no.
10:11Oh man, okay, let's get in the BMW E30 zone.
10:15I know the real reason Duncan loves this so much.
10:18It's because it's the car he drove on his wedding day.
10:22Dolphin grey, two door, manual.
10:24You know, this is when touring cars were at the top.
10:27You know, BMW, they were smashing it.
10:30My mates were rocking around in Mark II Escorts.
10:32And you had the BMW and that made you cool.
10:35What a car, unbelievable.
10:37Alright, so what we should then do is if it captures the imagination for you,
10:42you're our target customer.
10:44And our target customer, you, is going to remember the touring car,
10:48remember it as a great driver's car.
10:50So if we get it driving great and give a nod to its race pedigree somehow,
10:54then alright, I'm in, I'm in.
10:57But under the bonnet is where we're going to have most of the issues.
11:05There's air leaks.
11:06It's going to need a timing belt.
11:08It's going to need a service.
11:09But it's actually not in service for seven years.
11:12In fact, he openly admits he's not done anything mechanical for seven years.
11:15At least it's not white or an automatic.
11:18Thank God that isn't the case.
11:21I just pray this car isn't going to prove as cash and time hungry as the house.
11:26I need the hallway ripped out by tomorrow to stand any chance of getting back on schedule.
11:35Definitely running out of time today.
11:38As Duncan would say, we're reverting to an antism.
11:42It's the, er, to do before thinking.
11:45I really wasn't expecting all this demolition.
11:48It's very messy.
11:49But it is what it is.
11:50We'll get it done.
11:51We'll have to see how we go in the next few weeks before we make a decision on moving in or not.
11:57To stop my grand plan falling apart, I need to get my BMW E30 sold at profit ASAP.
12:04So it's going into the barn for a long overdue service.
12:10Reverse.
12:11Reverse.
12:12There's a delay.
12:13Drive.
12:14Yeah, yeah.
12:15There's a delay.
12:16Yeah.
12:17Okay.
12:18Reverse.
12:19Oh my gosh.
12:20There's literally like I could make a cup of tea in that delay.
12:24You know, we don't want to book an appointment to look, put it in gear.
12:28There's a good...
12:29Telegraph.
12:30There's a good carrier pigeon and then it suddenly works.
12:33Well, one of these auto boxes, it's all about oil pressure and little valves.
12:38And if the oil's all dirty, that oil takes longer to go through all them little valves and pistons.
12:48This is the problem.
12:49Auto gearbox is not what we want.
12:51Either it's going to be a simple fix or it's going to get really expensive.
13:00It should look like under here.
13:09Remarkably good, actually.
13:11I'm trying to fix the delay in the auto gearbox on my reluctantly bought BMW E30.
13:19Okay, ready?
13:20Yeah.
13:22It could just be a transmission oil and filter change or an expensive gearbox overhaul.
13:28Yeah, that's not a lot of oil.
13:31This auto box relies on really good oil pressure to change gears.
13:35So if it hasn't got the right amount of oil pressure, that could account for why it's got a delay going into gear.
13:40Sump pan off.
13:41Then we'll have a look at the filter.
13:43The sump pan's where the oil collects before recirculation.
13:47You got the sump, yeah?
13:48Yeah.
13:49Could be a comedy moment.
13:51Right, will you pour transmission oil over my face?
13:58Let's wipe that filter off.
14:05If this has never been changed, little bits slowly block that filter up, which restricts the oil, which then would restrict the pressure in the box as well.
14:17If that fixes it...
14:21Happy days.
14:24We'll see.
14:26I need this to be a cheap and easy fix because my hallway's proving anything but.
14:31The demolition and electrics are done.
14:33Michael's now insulating and larving, ready for Duncan to plaster.
14:37Oh, man.
14:40That's a lot of work.
14:41Yeah, you have no idea.
14:42It's more than a single room.
14:44Just the height of it and the access.
14:46Yeah, from the ground floor to here, it's the only part of the home that's double or triple height.
14:51If we get Duncan in to get the ceiling done, he's got to do a scratch coat, top coat.
14:55It's going to be another 14 days, I reckon.
14:57We're running out of time.
14:59We really are running out of time.
15:02Yeah.
15:03Because at the moment, with the current pace, the current trajectory, we ain't going to make the end of the summer.
15:09No, we won't.
15:13I need a lucky break.
15:15I've just spent 60 quid on a new filter.
15:21And fresh transmission oil, hoping this fixes the auto gear delay.
15:26What did you end up taking out of it?
15:28We dropped two litres and it was a little bit dry at the dipstick.
15:31I'm thinking of chucking an extra half litre in.
15:33Yeah.
15:37Perfect.
15:39Right, Duncan.
15:40It's the moment of truth.
15:42Yeah.
15:46Have some fingers crossed, please, Ant.
15:47Go for it.
15:51Clear off the ground.
15:53Tell you what.
15:55It's straight in.
15:56Reverse.
15:59Dude, I fixed it!
16:01Yes.
16:03That was a cheap fix.
16:04This old bimmer's growing on me.
16:07The least I can do is give its precision-made German straight-six engine the servicing it deserves.
16:13Do you know what the service interval is for a cam belt on this car?
16:1680,000?
16:17No, it's actually less.
16:18It's 60,000 ore every seven years.
16:20And bear in mind our seller owned this for seven years and admitted he did nothing mechanical.
16:25So it's on borrowed time.
16:27So the first thing that needs to come off is the undertray underneath.
16:29Up in the air then.
16:34The cam belt or timing belt synchronises the engine's crankshaft and camshaft.
16:39If it snaps, the results will be catastrophic.
16:41I can see the cam belt from here.
16:45Through a little hole in the side.
16:47We're going to have to do some mechanic hand yoga.
16:51Next up is fan.
16:54She's away.
16:55That's it.
16:59God, it's really tight up there, isn't it?
17:01Yeah, spin it like that.
17:02Look out.
17:05Whoa!
17:07Good catch.
17:08All right, I think the next bit we tackle from up top.
17:15Now before even considering taking the timing belt off, you have to align all the cams.
17:20There's timing marks.
17:22BMW very handily give two timing marks.
17:24One here on the crank.
17:26This little dimple there in the casting needs to line up with a line on the crankshaft.
17:30So I need to rotate it to line it up and then at the same time there's a casting mark up here on the head
17:36and needs to line up with a line on the camshaft.
17:39Now for every two rotations of the crank, because it's a smaller cog, it does one rotation of the cam.
17:45Now it's absolutely imperative that this lines up because once the cam belt is off, the engine is free.
17:51Walk away for a cup of tea and then somebody knocks the car, moves it out just one tooth will affect the timing of the engine.
17:57And if you turn the engine on and the timing's out, it gets really expensive really quickly.
18:03I'm going to use a white marker so I can see where I need to line them up more clearly.
18:10Now the cam belt only works if it stays under a complete state of tension.
18:13It's like the belt of your trousers.
18:14If it's loose, your trousers are going to fall off.
18:16And that is done by this tensioner here.
18:19I'm just going to lock the tensioner in a place where it keeps the belt nice and loose.
18:25And the cam belt should just be able to slide off.
18:29It's amazing how strong these rubber belts are.
18:32But of course they have to be.
18:34They're taking the forces of this brilliant straight-six engine.
18:38Ah, there we go.
18:40Now this is the cam belt.
18:46And actually you can see now it's out how it works.
18:49The lower crankshaft sits here.
18:51There's an auxiliary pulley here with some teeth on and then the camshaft up here.
18:55So every time the crankshaft rotates it carries those pistons up and down.
18:59Six of them because it's a straight six.
19:01And if the timing is off, so let's say this camshaft one or two teeth out,
19:05and the piston rises while the van is open,
19:10you're going to have two big bits of metal hitting each other under rotation
19:14that's going to ultimately end one way.
19:16And that's this engine going bang.
19:18So this consumable item needs to be changed every seven years or 60,000 miles.
19:23And if this goes, your engine is toast.
19:26This new cam belt kit has set me back just 75 quid.
19:30But before I get anywhere near it, check my timing marks are all in line.
19:34Get this wrong and a cheap fix could turn very expensive very quickly.
19:39That is the cam belt fully on.
19:44I'm going to rotate the crank just a little bit.
19:49That feels good.
19:51Yeah, I can feel it now. The slack is taken up.
19:55Which means I can now lock the tensioner in place.
19:59Two revolutions of the crank will show if I've got the timing right.
20:05That lines up.
20:08That lines up.
20:10And that lines up.
20:12Right, that is job done.
20:16You can turn the key, it's your car.
20:18Is that timing belt timed up properly?
20:20I'm telling you, we're about to find out.
20:22Yeah.
20:23Yeah, we're good.
20:24Go on then.
20:25You haven't stitched me up and put it a tooth out so it wrecks my engine.
20:28Uh, no, because I like this engine.
20:30Oh, I don't know, I trust you.
20:34No, wait!
20:35Oh, mate.
20:40Yeah?
20:41That is straight sixes.
20:43I have to admit, the way that engine sounds is absolutely beautiful.
20:47Happy?
20:49Another step closer, mate.
20:51Another step closer.
20:55To find out what other mechanical jobs are critical, my fate lies in the hands of a computer.
21:01Who'd you borrow that from?
21:03A mate of mine.
21:05He's put me the right connector on.
21:07This E30's from an era when cars were becoming electronically brained.
21:12A thorough service means connecting its engine control unit to a diagnostic scanner.
21:17And keeping everything crossed.
21:19Alright, go on then.
21:20Plug it in.
21:21Plug it in and tell me the nightmare list of items that's going to be wrong with it.
21:25No, you little faith.
21:31Go on.
21:32Wait for it.
21:33Come on.
21:34Come on.
21:51Come on.
21:52Come on.
21:53You know that list is potentially going to be a nightmare.
21:55Our BMW E30 has been flashing up engine warnings.
21:59So we've plugged in a diagnostic tool.
22:01This will scan its internal computer system for errors in the engine and other key systems.
22:07There's no way that this car has sat still for seven years and that is not going to kick up a load of faults.
22:12You little faith.
22:13Right.
22:14Engine.
22:15Ignition on.
22:16Ignition on.
22:17He's telling you to put the ignition on.
22:18Yes.
22:19Alright.
22:21Go on then.
22:22Hit me.
22:23I don't even want to look.
22:25How many faults?
22:26Right.
22:27Ten.
22:28Twenty.
22:29Fifty.
22:30We have one.
22:31Shut up.
22:32There must be more than one fault.
22:33One?
22:34Alright.
22:35What's the fault?
22:36It's saying O2 sensor control.
22:39Right.
22:40Oxygen sensor.
22:41Check for air leaks from manifold and down pipe.
22:45Okay.
22:46Be sure system is in closed loop status.
22:49I think I know what the problem is.
22:51When I went to see the car in Enfield and run it, you lean on this pipe here and you can hear the air escaping.
22:58Which means the system that's supposed to be airtight is not.
23:02Right.
23:03So it might just be a leak.
23:05You little beauty.
23:07Right.
23:08Let's take those hoses off.
23:09Leaks in the hoses that feed oxygen into the manifold would disrupt the perfectly balanced air fuel mix, reducing engine performance.
23:18This is a leaky BMW.
23:20It's leaky.
23:21Alright.
23:22You chose it.
23:23But we can make it not leaky.
23:24Okay.
23:25This is actually missing the jubilee clip off here.
23:29Somebody's had a go at this before and they haven't put the clip back on.
23:33The Germans put clips on things for a reason.
23:43These are pennies for the jubilee clips and hopefully if that sorts our problem out, that's another big tip for this car.
23:50We're all back together.
23:52Let's get our bit of technology.
23:54There she goes.
23:56Right.
23:57Come on.
23:58Come on.
23:59Ignition on.
24:00Ignition on.
24:01Jump in.
24:02Right.
24:03Let's get this up to temperature.
24:04Hands clear.
24:05Hands clear.
24:06I'll leave the ignition on.
24:07Reset codes.
24:08Right.
24:09Let's see.
24:10Moment of the truth.
24:11Alright.
24:12Let's get into codes.
24:13Codes.
24:14Oh mate.
24:15No codes present.
24:16That fixed it.
24:17Yeah.
24:18It was half a dozen jubilee clips.
24:19This has saved us, I mean potentially hundreds and hundreds of pounds.
24:28Boom.
24:29I'm actually starting to like this car now.
24:30Come on then.
24:31Give it some love.
24:32Only because it's turning out cheap.
24:33What we should do is make it look as good as the outside.
24:35I've got these insulation pads so they can go on.
24:36Yeah.
24:37Yeah.
24:38Yeah.
24:39Yeah.
24:40Yeah.
24:41Yeah.
24:42Yeah.
24:43Yeah.
24:44Yeah.
24:45Yeah.
24:46Yeah.
24:47Yeah.
24:48Yeah.
24:49Yeah.
24:50Yeah.
24:51Yeah.
24:52Yeah.
24:53While we've been working on the BMW, what a difference.
25:06Just makes it look factory.
25:08Factory fresh.
25:10Over in the house, Michael's finished larving and lambswool insulating the hallway.
25:15Ready for busy boy Duncan to plaster.
25:18This is like a lime and chalk mix.
25:20So, you know, it's very flexible and good on timber framed houses.
25:25While my son, Archie, cleans up the mess.
25:29What is the point of this?
25:31Well, you have to stay on top of it.
25:33Well, I hoover here, I go down there when it's clean, I come back and it's dirty.
25:37Nana does this every single day, so get to it.
25:41As a reward, I have a job for him that's a bit more fun.
25:45Archie's gonna help me engineer a nod to my BMW's 80s and 90s race car pedigree.
25:52So, I was thinking of lowering it.
25:55And why would you lower it?
25:56Well, there's two reasons for lowering the car.
25:58There's the mechanical reason.
25:59If I can take the weight of the car, put it closer to the tarmac, it's gonna improve the way the car drives.
26:04So, you imagine all that weight is now gonna go round the corners better.
26:08It's slightly lower to the ground.
26:10Secondly is the aesthetic reason.
26:12I think somehow we've got to make a white four-door saloon look cool.
26:16And lowering it is definitely gonna make it look cool.
26:19Make it look faster.
26:25Put those paving slabs in the boot until we're happy with the ride height that we like.
26:30Oh, I'm getting dirty.
26:32Could you really not have helped with this?
26:36No, no, you're doing fantastic.
26:38Terrific.
26:40Is that enough yet?
26:41More slabs.
26:46Keep going, buddy.
26:48Let's lower this boy.
26:51I reckon this is possibly the last one.
26:54I hope so.
26:57What do you think?
26:58Looks really low.
26:59I know!
27:00I love the way it looks.
27:01It does look cool.
27:02Right?
27:03Do you think more or less?
27:04I think that's about perfect.
27:05I think that's about perfect as well.
27:07We can't go too far because we will change the way the car handles negatively.
27:12That is 35 millimetres.
27:15Three and a half centimetres.
27:16I'm happy with that.
27:17That's well within the tolerance of not affecting the car's handling too much.
27:21Right.
27:22You can take the slabs out of the boot now.
27:26And I'll go and order a set of 35 millimetre lower springs.
27:30Yeah, 1991.
27:31E30.
27:32Yeah, front and rear.
27:3335 millimetres.
27:34Great.
27:35Okay, how much are they?
27:36All right.
27:37Does that include delivery?
27:38This afternoon?
27:39Perfect.
27:40Yep.
27:41I'll take them.
27:42Thanks.
27:43Nice job, Archie.
27:44But you're not done yet.
27:45Right.
27:46Whip that wheel off.
27:47And just place it down there.
27:50Whoa!
27:51Whoa!
27:52Whoa!
27:53Whoa!
27:54Whoa!
27:55Whoa!
27:56Whoa!
27:57Whoa!
27:58Whoa!
27:59Whoa!
28:00Whoa!
28:01Whoa!
28:02Whoa!
28:03Whoa!
28:04Whoa!
28:05Whoa!
28:06Whoa!
28:07Whoa!
28:08Whoa!
28:10Whoa!
28:11Whoa!
28:12Whoa!
28:13There we go.
28:17Keep going.
28:21Oh, my God.
28:22Slow down on the trigger.
28:27Oh, my gosh.
28:28Oh.
28:29I hope it hasn't damaged the hub.
28:32Let's have a look.
28:33It told me.
28:34What?
28:35That the wheel's disconnected?
28:36Well, it's gonna fall.
28:37The wheel's gonna fall.
28:38Okay, it's good to know now.
28:39Right.
28:40Are you comfortable taking the other side wheel off?
28:41Because we're gonna do both at the same time.
28:42Okay.
28:43Yes.
28:44Go on, then.
28:45Go on, wait, it's gonna fall.
28:46So, this is the bit we're replacing, that spring.
28:47That spring there.
28:48We're gonna take this old one out and stick the brand new 35mm shorter one in.
29:03shorter one in but what I need you to do is if I rest this underneath the wishbone if you go to
29:08the ramp and lower it but slowly until I say stop. For all its high-tech flourishes the E30
29:14suspension is mechanically simple supported by an array of aftermarket suppliers making it very
29:20mod friendly. Five four inches tiny little down okay one more of those stop perfect right throw
29:28that under there and make yourself comfortable. We actually only have to undo two bolts you're
29:35gonna do that one I'm gonna do that one this is the damper out of the way you've removed the
29:47anti-roll butt and then I need you to lift the ramp again slowly oh beautiful that'll do right there's
30:00only one way to take these springs out and this can get a little bit shady because springs tend to go
30:06ping oh that was underwhelming I thought it's gonna jump out and fly around it does boing though look
30:15yeah we're not gonna need that anymore right you go underneath the back you know exactly the bolts
30:22to do oh I'll do the front. Four bolts lower the rear of the car and that's all that's it
30:34all right the bolts are out all right let's take the pressure off
30:38okay you saw what I did like first time right yeah lever the spring out pull and hope
30:46ah it's pretty good right easy this is a really easy fix like you could with the knowledge now tackle
30:57this on your own right right I'm ready what's next we have to wait for the parts to get the
31:04hallway back on track I'm counting on the 30 years experience of Duncan aka the fastest plasterer
31:10what we're going to do is try and let a nice bit of character to the top of this
31:14start getting these big nice chunky rounds plus if you've been to the pub and you happen to knock
31:25the head on them it's nice and soft my 128 quid 35 millimeter springs are here which means we can
31:37drop my e30 suspension thanks dude do I need to sign that no it's fine yeah beautiful cheers bud thank
31:44you fancy oh they're blue I should just slot in there because it's shorter it's like a glove it's
31:57meant to be right you lower it down and we'll raise the wishbone take up some tension okay slow stop
32:05right if you come and connect the anti-roll bar right drum it up nice and tight right is that it that's
32:19it done two bolts spring swap let's do the other side I might make a mechanic out of Archie yet
32:28beautiful right take that axle stand out the way fronts now that's it done yeah that's it the car
32:56is lowered although we're not fully done yet because what we want to do because the car's been up and
33:00down so many times the suspension's relaxed is the best thing to do is to take it outside drive it up
33:05and down the yard three or four times and that allows the car to settle obviously I'll be the
33:09one in the driver's seat oh you want to drive it of course I want to drive I worked on the car I think
33:13I deserve to drive yeah that's not a reason all right you can drive start up cool engine now we're just
33:24going to get up and down four or five times right perfect so keep going all the way back keep going
33:33keep going keep going keep going lovely right we're just going to go forwards and back you can give it
33:40a bit more pace then what that does is it settles it right stop it right there right key off let's check it
33:52out it looks so much better what do you think the ride height I think it looks quite cool it makes
34:02it look more of a racing car low is good low is good
34:06one of the hardest things in plastering is probably doing ceilings Duncan's living up to his fastest
34:24plasterer nickname the insulated backing coat has dried and now he's applying the top coats in the
34:30hallway the top coats really the one that starts to make the job actually look finished
34:36we only put a little bit of moisture on the trout just to let it glide we come up go diagonal you get
34:51more of a nice gentle curve lowering my BMW E30's ride height has made it look a hundred times cooler
34:59but to push its motorsport look even further and make it stand out I've called on the skills of my
35:05mate Henry he started as a digital designer but has been in the vinyl wrap business for 15 years and
35:12unlike me he loves the BMW color this white space for me is beautiful it's a plain canvas and we'll apply
35:21it going that way just so to push all the air out in one direction and so you just have to keep a lot of
35:27attention on it a bit of pressure the only way you can do it is with a bit of patience I've been told
35:32they have lots of patience if Henry's painstaking work pays off it should up my E30s auction appeal
35:40hopefully paying for the hallway which Duncan's now finished plastering and I've got the perfect
35:45embellishment hey dunk don't go yo do you want to grab that chandelier and navigate it up the stairs
35:53what the meter wide chandelier through it'll probably fit I don't want to take the scaffold
35:59down to get the light up here Michael's installed a wooden bracket which should take the weight of my
36:05stunning centerpiece don't bang it no don't this is like square peg hitting a round hole I think you're
36:18doing fantastic I've got this I've got this don't worry we're up we're still in one piece me and the
36:28chandelier I feel a comedy moment coming on Rodney
36:32right done oh wait that looks the business dude that looks amazing three two one
36:47oh my god it transforms the whole roof space and the best thing is if my BMW makes a loss the
36:54plastering's free thanks dunk but that's feeling less likely than ever now Henry's finished work in
37:00his vinyl wrap magic oh my god dude stop whatever just stop don't change anything this is perfect
37:07Joe I was really worried that it was a bland white car and now it just stands out and feels individual
37:14I'm glad you like it it is absolutely perfect
37:17before we sell her there's one vital finishing touch I've splurged 53 pounds to make my e30 look like
37:26it's just rolled off an early 90s German factory line but this is a monumental moment the minute you
37:32push that badge on it represents the end of our work we are done on the BMW that you chose this is the
37:38money this is the bit it better be
37:44there you go our work here is done now I need to figure out what I've spent and how much she needs to make
37:53all right we paid six eight fifty six eight fifty I put everything into buckets so mechanical parts
38:03things like the load springs timing belt transmission filter is 270 pounds and 90 pence around 55 quid on
38:10servicing the wrap my mate pulled me a massive favor did it for 500 quid and then all the other little
38:17bits like the soundproofing in the bonnet and the badge I can't believe how expensive that badge is but
38:22it does make it is under 200 190 49 which means we've spent a shade over a thousand pounds 1016 pounds and
38:31two pence bringing our total to 7 866 they just sweat listen you were pretty confident at the start of
38:40this I've got to hear that straight six I've got to drive it the only way for me to truly appreciate
38:46this BMW e30 is to hit the autobar
38:51yeah silky smooth that's the right expression I don't think I've been in the e30s since I had mine
38:58but that was 26 years ago I mean this this drive beautiful
39:04the steering is exceptional the lowered start is epic I think we did it just enough so visually it
39:13looks way better on the outside but performance wise look this is a different car proper car
39:20this is a driver's car just can't believe how tight the whole car feels yeah there is a german quality
39:27to it look no rattles no bangs it's reluctantly grown on me
39:46all right all right I admit this is a great car
39:49yeah never doubt it yeah I have to hand it to him I would not have bought this car without
39:55Duncan's influence this is definitely a car I would have overlooked this car was about fixing
40:00the mechanicals there was warning lights on the dash and it had that sluggish gear change
40:04but once all those jobs are done you know the car's not only aesthetically perfect
40:09it's now mechanically sound no but I couldn't just leave it as a standard white saloon card
40:15the vinyls and if we're going to put it in an auction we need somebody to be drawn to it
40:19this makes our car individual and I tell you what the new owner is going to have a fantastic car
40:23and truth be told and I'll probably whisper this before this car I wasn't a bmw e30 guy
40:30I'd take that on a road trip don't tell Duncan
40:40we're at the Silverstone festival my bmw e30 owes us 7 866 pounds and she's going to auction no reserve
40:50okay so how confident are you feeling
40:54I'm not very confident it's good luck babe I got married in one of these maybe you should buy it
40:59I think if I took this home my wife would have heart attacks she'd think we're in for another 30 years
41:04come on let's keep the faith let's keep the confidence either I get my plastering done or we
41:09make a profit I actually win either way yeah go on lead the way
41:26here we go to lot number 653 then the 1990 the bmw 325
41:33this is on you this let me just remind you under your leadership 7 800 over 7 8 is spent on this
41:42five two eight three thousand I can say now three thousand four thousand thank you
41:48oh four someone's just swing four grand four two here at four thousand two hundred four five four eight
41:56five five five five six i already got it going up in grand with my commission at six thousand
42:05six five thank you at six five six thousand five hundred that's with your bid on the telephone
42:11Harry then at sixty five hundred online you still wait there then at six thousand five come on you're
42:16still currently losing your bets come on come on one more are we all done then at six thousand five
42:22come on sell at sixty five hundred i'll take six eight anywhere if it helps otherwise at six thousand
42:29yes six eight oh my god the guy at the front is just bidding you better than six eight you need
42:33another grand to win your bet come on keep your hands down seven two seven two thank you
42:40seven thousand five oh god you're gonna pull it off come on well thank you for your bids then seven
42:45thousand five is there sure you don't want seven eight go on what about seven six go on seven six well
42:51thank you for your bids then seventy five hundred then back on the telephone at seven thousand five
42:56no one offering more than at seven thousand five hundred then you've nubble me
43:00seventy five hundred then that's yours harry seven thousand five hundred do you know what that's the
43:06first time i've come to a car auction i'm happy that i lost 360 odd quid down but actually i've won the
43:16bet with duncan and duncan said if the car sells for a loss i'll get the plastering done for free
43:20and the house needs a lot of plaster it does eat away a little bit of profit of the money we need for the
43:25house but at least it's not a thousand two thousand and feel a bit sad for duncan you know he threw
43:31everything at it it was his car to champion and he really has championed it and i've come to sort
43:37of respect the car a bit more i've secretly come to admire the e30 still don't think it's the coolest car
43:43ever
