00:00I'm an Anstead, and when it comes to cars, I can fix almost anything.
00:08Oh, there she goes!
00:11When it comes to houses, not so much.
00:17I'm supercharging my mission.
00:20Oh, my God!
00:22Fixing up and flipping eight more classic motors.
00:25You look like Laura Denardi, you, do you?
00:29Because the 500-year-old farmhouse I bought for my parents to retire in...
00:34...is a crumbling money pit.
00:37I would brace yourself, cos it ain't gonna be cheap.
00:40But I won't be defeated.
00:42Yeah! It's beautiful, isn't it?
00:44I want Mum and Dad moved in before summer ends.
00:48We'll call it glamping, shall we?
00:49Right, that's the spirit.
00:51And with the help of family...
00:54I did it!
00:55...and my petrolhead pal, Duncan.
00:58Yay!
00:59Come on then, let's go!
01:01I'm determined to turn cars into cash.
01:05Oh!
01:06Even...
01:07Ah!
01:08...if it kills me.
01:09Woo!
01:10Woo!
01:11The back of my farmhouse has been condemned.
01:24Chuck us the crowbar!
01:27But the front's okay.
01:29So I'm focusing my energy on the front, two up, two down.
01:36I'm turning this into an exposed, beamed dining room.
01:40The beams look amazing!
01:42Oh!
01:43Right decision!
01:44And if I'm gonna get my folks moved in by the end of summer, I need to hit the accelerator.
01:51There's 500 years of dust and muck.
01:54Woo-hoo!
01:56Hell of a noise.
01:57He's having another go at destroying something.
02:05Hello?
02:08Oh my goodness, what are you doing?
02:11It was a nice room.
02:14This was the only decent room in the house.
02:17I know, but now it's gonna be even better because this is all part of the grand master plan.
02:21Because what I'm thinking is, is if we can quickly crash out this room and a couple of the others,
02:25we can have you guys moved in here permanently by the end of the summer.
02:29This year.
02:30Yes, this year!
02:32You were going to have us move in three months after you bought this place.
02:35Yeah, Christmas the year before.
02:37Last.
02:38This is called progress.
02:40I would really love to be inside your brain.
02:42I wouldn't.
02:43I wouldn't spend any time there.
02:45I hope you know what you're doing.
02:47I have no idea what I'm doing.
02:49Great.
02:51Okay, so the inside of the house is still a big mess.
02:56But at least the outside's looking smarter.
03:00Thanks to my mate Duncan.
03:02Nickname, the fastest plasterer.
03:05Yeah, my nickname.
03:06It's nothing to do with the speed of my plastering.
03:09You see, Duncan leads a double life.
03:14When he's not plastering, Duncan builds and drives race cars.
03:19That's how I met him 25 years ago.
03:22I call it a passion.
03:23My wife calls it an addiction.
03:26You know, when you go to bed and he hits a pillow and you think,
03:28oh, I've still got a few more bits to do.
03:30Get up early, go and work on the car.
03:33So, Duncan's going to be my wingman,
03:35helping me fix up and flip classic cars,
03:39as well as fixing up the house.
03:41Working with Ant.
03:42Like herding cats.
03:44He's here one minute, then you think, oh, what's he up?
03:47Oh, my God, all the ceiling's down.
03:50Take the hammer off him.
03:52I get a bit done and I think, right, we're making progress
03:54and all of a sudden you hear bang, bang, bang.
03:55Clay out the dust and another bit's coming down.
04:03How's it going?
04:04Very good.
04:05What are you ricking in there now?
04:06No, this is called progress.
04:08So, I'm going to go see a car in a second.
04:09Do me a favour.
04:10Can you open up the workshop?
04:11Maybe actually sort out some tools.
04:13Car stuff.
04:15With Duncan on board, I have a fighting chance
04:19of getting mum and dad moved in by the end of summer.
04:23But with just four months to go, there's no time to waste.
04:27So, I'm Cambridgeshire bound.
04:29To see a motor I reckon could give us a fuel injection
04:32of cash for the house.
04:36I've got a tip-off on a car that I absolutely have to go
04:39and see quickly because it is a 1972 Ford Capacity.
04:44Now, I was just about born in the 70s
04:47and the fact that it's a Capri, boom.
04:49You had me at Capri.
04:50It's one of those cool cars.
04:52It's the car that everyone should at least own once.
04:54In fact, the marketing slogan from Ford back in the day
04:57was the car that you'd always promised yourself.
05:01Launched in 1969, the Capri was Ford's UK answer
05:05to the American Mustang.
05:07Priced at just 890 pounds, Ford sold it as the
05:11affordable family sports car.
05:13Shifting 1.9 million and creating a working-class icon
05:17in the process.
05:21It's a Mark 1 1600 1972 GXL.
05:26It's like the cool sweet spot for Capris.
05:29There's market for it right now.
05:31Capris are selling.
05:32So, for this sort of car, I'm looking at mid-teens.
05:36Now, he's advertised it at 12 grand.
05:38I might be able to negotiate a little bit off that
05:41and make a 10, 20% margin.
05:43Oh, that must be our dude there.
05:49Mr. Capri.
05:53Morning.
05:54Morning.
05:55Good to meet you, man.
05:56Good to meet you, too.
05:57You want to take a look?
05:58Yeah, please.
05:59Mark's selling the car on behalf of his stepson, Ollie.
06:04First flash of bright yellow, and I'm in trouble.
06:09My poker face is terrible.
06:11This is already happy Capri face.
06:13Oh, my gosh.
06:18Ollie bought the car about nine months ago, I think.
06:21So, he's only had this nine months and he's already moving it on.
06:24Because that's a bit of a red flag.
06:26It was a spare time project and he just doesn't have the spare time.
06:29But it does start.
06:30It does start.
06:31Because I'd love to take it out and look at it in the sunlight.
06:34Be my guest.
06:44Stay alive.
06:49Ha-ha!
06:50Yes!
06:52Oh, man, I really love it.
06:54Oh, God.
07:03You realise every time I turn the key knocks money off the price?
07:07Just don't turn the key.
07:08Not that I'd let Mark know, but this doesn't really worry me.
07:13Bit more choke.
07:15It's most likely an issue with a manual choke.
07:18It's a simple job.
07:19She's temperamental, which I like.
07:21She has personality.
07:22Stay alive.
07:23Stay alive!
07:24All right!
07:33I already love her.
07:36I already love her.
07:40Do you mind if I get maybe five, ten minutes on my own?
07:42No, no.
07:43Sure.
07:48Somebody's definitely done some restoration work in here.
07:50Radiator's new.
07:53Battery's new.
07:54That's not a standard manifold.
07:56That is a four-branch tubular manifold.
07:58Twin choke carp.
08:01Yeah, someone spent some money on this.
08:05See, I do worry about the chrome on this,
08:08because getting hold of Capri bumpers could be tricky.
08:11So if these can be saved, that's money saved.
08:16Yeah, that looks suspicious.
08:18That's the tricky thing about rust, is it's hidden under the paint.
08:23So that's either going to be a patch fix or a new wing.
08:29And I don't even know how much a wing is.
08:33Someone's put GT badges on it, though.
08:37The GT, short for Gran Turismo, was the Mark 1 sporty option,
08:41and a GT would be worth a few grand more than the GXL this is advertised as.
08:47People put fancy pants badges on thinking it'll make the car look better.
08:54There's obviously some steering issues.
08:56That feels really sloppy.
08:58Clutch feels firm.
09:00Hang on, this car has the extra gauge.
09:04Twin choke carb.
09:06Four-branch manifold.
09:07Four-branch manifold.
09:11This might be a GT.
09:13The extra performance features made the GT top of the range.
09:17And it's rarer.
09:19I can't be.
09:20The guy would advertise it as a GT.
09:21A GT's worth more.
09:24Proving it's a GT could push the Capri's value closer to 20 grand.
09:28Meaning big profit, if I can get Mark to lower the 12 grand price tag.
09:33Now, do you know that your stepson advertised this as a really specific car?
09:40A 1600 GXL.
09:42Yeah, I'm sure he did.
09:43But actually, the evidence of this car means that these badges might be right.
09:48This might be a GT.
09:49And the reason I'm sharing that is because there is a significant value difference.
09:54But I can't confirm today whether it is a GXL or a GT.
09:57I don't know.
09:58So let's say, hypothetically, it's a GXL. As advertised, it's a seven, eight grand car. Topped.
10:04And what if it's not?
10:06Well, we don't know if it's not.
10:07Meet me somewhere.
10:09Eleven.
10:10Nine.
10:12Nine and a half.
10:14Why don't I say ten five?
10:17Ten five.
10:19It's a 72 bright yellow Ford Capri.
10:21Ten five.
10:23Lovely.
10:24Ten and a half grand for a Mark 1 Capri that could be a valuable GT model.
10:31It's a gamble worth taking.
10:34And let's not forget, it's bright yellow.
10:38She looks so good.
10:43I just know Duncan and my dad are gonna love her.
10:46Oh, my God.
10:53Drink it in, boys.
10:54Mark 1.
10:55Drink it in.
10:56This is my Mark 1 Ford Capri smug face.
10:59Mega.
11:00Noisy.
11:01It's a bright yellow car.
11:02It's supposed to be noisy.
11:05Did you have a Capri?
11:06It's the only one I didn't have.
11:07I mean, back then, you'd slam it, put some springs on it, stiffen it up a bit.
11:12Duncan's always trying to make cars faster.
11:14Alloys.
11:16It'll attract the bees.
11:17It will attract the bees, yeah.
11:19Hopefully it attracts the money.
11:21Look, Duncan's already loving it.
11:24Bodywork looks okay.
11:25Bodywork's...
11:26Okay.
11:28What have we got here?
11:29The steering issue may escalate a bit.
11:30We're not gonna sit here and criticise her just yet.
11:34She looks smart.
11:3616 GT.
11:39And I know you know what that means.
11:40More desirable.
11:41But what did you pay for it?
11:44Come on.
11:45How much?
11:46Ten and a half grand.
11:47There's nothing on this car that screams tons of costs.
11:51And if we can categorically identify this as a Mark 1 GT, it's gonna be worth more money.
11:58So we're gonna have to do some delving.
12:00Someone's gonna have to do a little bit of investigation work.
12:03You notice the way I use the word someone?
12:05You're not that one, are you?
12:07I think the guy that looks like an on-screen detective in a ridiculous hat should do it.
12:11Bergerac.
12:13Dad's now gonna be called Bergerac.
12:17Do you wanna drive it in?
12:19I've never driven a Capri and I don't wanna ruin it.
12:21If anybody's gonna knock the barn down, I think it should be you.
12:24Alright, I'll put it in the barn.
12:26Duncan, be busy on the house.
12:32While Duncan gets back to his day job, I'm gonna tackle the sloppy steering.
12:38I haven't actually looked underneath yet.
12:42If any of the main components are damaged, it could get expensive.
12:46Well, the good news is, the dampers themselves, the lower arms, the anti-roll bar, the metal work looks really solid.
12:56There's no signs of damage.
12:59Rack arms are straight.
13:03This suggests it's the joints and clamps that connect the main parts that are causing the problem.
13:08A key steering element is the rack, so I need Duncan back.
13:13Fixed it?
13:14Well, I'm on my way to doing it.
13:16To help me test how it's performing with the wheels on the ground.
13:22Right, just turn it left and right.
13:25It's definitely like a boat.
13:27Oh yeah, you can see it now.
13:29Now that the weight of the car is sitting on the wheels, it's forcing the rack left and right.
13:34Which means it needs a new pair of rack clamps.
13:37The rack is crucial to converting turns of the steering wheel to the movement on the road.
13:42If the clamps that secure it fail, the results would be catastrophic.
13:48And we have a bit of up and down as well.
13:52Another problem.
13:54Oh yeah.
13:56The column that connects the steering wheel to the rack is also loose.
14:00Until I've fixed these potentially lethal issues, my Mark 1 Capri is unsellable.
14:17Sorting the dangerous steering system on my 1972 Mark 1 Capri means replacing the rack clamps, fixing the steering column, and checking all the suspension joints and bushes.
14:28Oh my God, this Capri!
14:33You going?
14:35No, it's just spinning.
14:38But I'm stumped at the first nut.
14:41As the sun sets on the Capri restoration.
14:46Oh my God, you piece of poop!
14:50The thread is tight, causing the lower arm's ball joint to spin.
14:55Getting the nut to engage will take some extreme pressure.
14:59Mechanic's pressure, not plasterer's pressure.
15:01Yeah, hold that there.
15:07Oh!
15:10I know, right?
15:11In fact, you should take that.
15:13That's kind of on the shelf.
15:14No, stuff it and mount it on the wall like a trophy.
15:17That's outrageous.
15:18I just pray not every nut's like that.
15:22OK.
15:24Sick.
15:27Woohoo!
15:29Alright, next side's all yours, yeah?
15:31If the left side's a piece of cake, I'll be livid.
15:34I'll be livid.
15:44Off.
15:45Typical.
15:46Am I now like some sort of apprentice?
15:49You got the hang of it.
15:52Don't know what you're flying at.
15:53Next, we need to detach the anti-roll bar.
16:07A vital bit of kit on a Capri.
16:10Yeah!
16:12A lightweight back end meant the Capri's handling was always a bit of a joke,
16:16but swinging it around was also tons of fun.
16:19So, to control some of that steering input, this anti-roll bar joins the right-hand side to the left-hand side,
16:26so when you dive into the road's corners, it lifts and picks up the car, stabilising it.
16:39Ready?
16:44That's terrible. How's yours?
16:46Seen better days.
16:47Well, we're going to be better off just getting a new lower arm.
16:50Yeah, the anti-roll bar itself is pretty good.
16:52Yeah. Give it a little cleaner.
16:54Bit of paint.
16:55You want to paint it?
16:56I think so.
16:57That's the spirit.
16:59Well, while we're doing it, we might as well make it pretty.
17:02I knew we were meant to be together.
17:08Alright, let's take the rack off.
17:13Now we can examine that loose steering rack.
17:15That's not right.
17:16That's supposed to have a metal cap over it.
17:20Yeah, so you normally have a little bit of rubber and a metal clamp round there.
17:26That might be the problem.
17:28Without the metal bracket, the rack could come off at any moment.
17:32At speed, that could be fatal.
17:38Well, is that side the same?
17:40Yeah.
17:42No wonder it drives like a boat.
17:46We need the metal bit.
17:47We do.
17:50The second issue is the rattling steering column.
17:56Yeah, you can feel the play in it.
17:58It's that rubber coupling there.
18:00No wonder it was sliding up and down.
18:02You can change it from this old rubber.
18:03You see it's riveted in.
18:04While some of the metal work can be restored, there's some small but vital new parts needed to make sure my Capri's not an unsellable death trap.
18:17So I've got an urgent task for Dad to add to his GT detective work.
18:22I've got to the bottom of the steering problem on the Capri, if you hold that.
18:26So this is what I'm going to need.
18:28Pair of lower control arms.
18:31The steering column coupling.
18:33And then a pair of steering rack clamps with the metal part.
18:37These are a flexible polycarbonate.
18:39It's supposed to have a metal bracket over it.
18:42And where's the metal bracket?
18:45I don't know.
18:46Was that dangerous?
18:47Oh my gosh, if that goes, you'll be in the wall.
18:50Yeah, this is a cowboy bodge that could have potentially killed someone.
18:55Oh my goodness.
18:56You want me to go and get the right bits?
18:58Yes.
18:59From a 1972 Ford Capri GT.
19:03Possibly a GT.
19:05You've got this.
19:07A stunningly restored Mark 1 Capri could mean big profit at auction.
19:15Cash that'll help me ramp up the renovations.
19:18And get Mum and Dad moved in before summer's end in just four months.
19:23But I also need manpower.
19:26Right, get that on. Open that up.
19:28How you doing man? Good to see you.
19:30Love you buddy.
19:31Love you too.
19:34So I've roped in my son Archie.
19:37To help me smash the ceiling and expose the beams in the dining room.
19:41Attaboy!
19:43That went everywhere.
19:44Yeah, yeah. Let's go.
19:47Oh my God.
19:51This is disgusting.
19:52Ha, ha, ha, ha.
19:53There's nothing dead animals off here.
19:55Ooh.
19:57This is so bad.
19:59Yeah, it's good.
20:01It's like all down my pants.
20:07There you go.
20:09Never again.
20:10Come on, that's gotta be good fun.
20:11It's gotta be good fun.
20:12I mean, I've got dust in places I never thought I could get it.
20:15Why are the Nana and Grandpa moving in?
20:16It doesn't seem ready yet.
20:18Yeah, it's not ready yet.
20:19But I've got this really ambitious plan to just focus on these two downstairs rooms and those two upstairs rooms.
20:25Yeah.
20:26That they could potentially move in at the end of the summer.
20:28Brilliant.
20:29Right, gear gloves on.
20:30Round two.
20:35While Archie finishes the demolition and Dad's out buying Capri steering parts, I want to fix the issue of why it takes multiple attempts to start up my Capri.
20:46And that's super common with cars from the 70s and to overcome it, manufacturers fitted what's called a manual choke.
20:55This lever here that's within reach of the driver, it operates the cable and it's supposed to move that lever on the carburetor.
21:05Pulling the lever reduces the flow of air, allowing more fuel to be sucked in, helping the car to start from cold.
21:12I can already see the cable is frayed. It's probably stretched, which is really common.
21:18First, I need to pull out the old cable.
21:21I'm saving time by keeping the outer sleeve that's already in the car and just swapping out the inner cable.
21:28And it only cost me eight quid.
21:31All I need to do is thread the new one through.
21:36Now, if I thread the new cable through that pinch bolt, make sure the cable grabs it, moves the lever.
21:49Now, that should...
21:59Yeah!
22:02Yeah, it engages that lever really nicely and locks it in place.
22:07If she starts first time, that's a big problem dealt with, and for less than a tenner.
22:11There we have it. Cold start, problem fixed.
22:29Solving my Capri's temperamental start-up was easy.
22:32The dangerously wonky steering, less so.
22:36But Dad's back with replacement parts.
22:39Oh, my God.
22:41How much was it?
22:42Under 150 quid.
22:43This is going to transform the car. Best 150 quid spent.
22:45Absolutely.
22:49The rubber coupling in the steering column is badly deteriorated.
22:52So I've upgraded it to a new one that'll give a better steering response.
22:58Check that out.
22:59Look at you!
23:00That is an upgraded polyurethane steering column.
23:02Come on, let me have it. Let me have it.
23:04Well, you took it out, actually. You can put it back in.
23:12While the steering wheel rattled up and down, the steering rack was also dangerously loose.
23:17So I'm fitting it with the metal brackets.
23:21These metal clamps will guarantee that that steering rack is clamped firmly to the chassis.
23:28Next, it's the repainted anti-roll bar.
23:31And brand new lower arms that connect it to the wheels.
23:36See that?
23:37That is in.
23:38Right, that's all tightened.
23:39That's all tightened.
23:40Tell you what, it's looking smart now.
23:47Moment of truth.
23:52Right, give it the backwards and forwards.
23:56Tight, right?
23:57100% better.
23:59Lovely! Left and right.
24:03How's that feel?
24:04We've got ourselves a sports car.
24:05Yes!
24:07Luffield.
24:08Oh, you're going round a bend at a racetrack?
24:10I thought I am.
24:11Of course you are.
24:13That is done.
24:14Steering.
24:15Finished.
24:17My Capri now steers like a sports car.
24:23And if my dad can crack the case and formally idea her as a rare performance-trimmed GT, it could add thousands to the value.
24:31So I've given him a tip-off.
24:33Contact the Capri Club.
24:35Hello, John speaking.
24:37John, good morning.
24:38I'm ringing to try and find out a bit of information about a Ford Capri.
24:41Yeah.
24:43What do you need to know?
24:44We think it's a GT, but we're not entirely sure.
24:48And we really need someone like yourself, an expert, to have a look at the information and the detail, and maybe, hopefully, confirm whether it is or not.
24:55It would be lovely for me to come up and meet you.
24:57Yeah, that would be super, yeah.
24:59If I bring some photos, would that help?
25:02Yeah, of course, yeah.
25:03Basically, the engine compartment, the dashboard layout, and the trim specification.
25:08All right, John.
25:09Thanks very much.
25:10Nice talking to you.
25:11Take care.
25:12Bye.
25:13Bye.
25:15Upping the price tag on my Capri would be very handy, as I'm about to splash some cash.
25:21With the dining room's original beams now exposed, I need specialist help from Imran and his team of ice blasters to restore them back to their former glory.
25:31How long have these beams been here?
25:34Well, this house is probably 500 years old.
25:36There's an argument it might be older.
25:38You don't want them completely clean, do you?
25:40You want to keep that look?
25:41Yeah, I don't want them to be over-new.
25:45That patina heritage look is what we're after.
25:48It has to have that kind of rustic farmhouse feel.
25:50Definitely.
25:53Firing compressed CO2 pellets at the beams causes mini-explosions, turning the pellets from solid to gas without becoming a liquid.
26:03This dislodges the dirt, but doesn't affect the heritage wood.
26:11It's this respectful level of restoration I want for my Mark 1 Capri's exterior, keeping as many original parts as possible.
26:18So while Dad goes off to play detective at the Capri Club, I also need him to drop the bumpers off at the Cromers.
26:29Right, this is one of those jobs that we both have to kind of finish at the same time.
26:33Really?
26:34Yeah, because it'll swing down and hit you in the shins.
26:41Okay, that's it. So if you can stick this in the car, I'll start taking the front off and then get that to my mate and he's going to make that look brand new.
26:47With the dining room's exposed beams well on the way to a new lease of life, I'm hoping Imran can squeeze in one extra special ice-blasting job.
27:00For my birthday, my girlfriend Renee pulled off quite a surprise after I thought I'd been pipped at the post bidding on vintage gates at an online auction.
27:09So I was furious because it was a stroke of luck finding the perfect gate for the first time, what would be the chance of doing it a second time?
27:18So basically I came here, my dad was here, he shows me into the workshop and on the floor of the workshop with a little balloon saying happy birthday were the gates that I thought I'd lost.
27:32What did your dad bought?
27:33No, my missus. Renee bought them for my birthday.
27:36What?
27:39That's red, isn't it?
27:44Sneaky.
27:45That's not sneaky, that's how you know if you know.
27:47Or is that love?
27:48It might be love.
27:54My Capri also needs some love to restore her stunning yellow paintwork.
28:02Do you think this has had repaint?
28:03Definitely had paint but I don't think they've changed the colour. I think it was always orange.
28:08This is a yellow car, Duncan. This is a yellow car. You think this is orange?
28:13This to me looks more orange.
28:16Is everything okay?
28:17Think this is orange?
28:18I think this...
28:20Let me get my...
28:21I don't want to check your temperature more than anything.
28:23Let me get my yellow bucket and I'll show you something.
28:30Now to me, this is more of the colour of the Capri I remember.
28:34Here ends the case for the prosecution.
28:39Before I ship my yellow Capri off to the spray booth, I need to check one of the panels.
28:46Bubbling paint could just be a sign of surface rust. Or worse, it could be corrosion that's penetrated deeper.
28:53What do you think a new wing's going to cost?
28:56Genuine Mark I Capri front wing.
28:59Yeah.
29:01500?
29:02900.
29:04900.
29:05Let's hope that's not rotten.
29:07I'm starting at the area that looks the worst. Carefully sanding the paint down to bare metal.
29:18It's good metal here and good metal here. There's something going on there.
29:24I'm going to get more aggressive with a grinder.
29:26What have we got going on there?
29:32Feels like a patch.
29:34Do you think that's an aerial hole?
29:36I was just thinking the same thing because we've got the aerial up here.
29:40Alright, let me attack the rest of the wing.
29:44There's also evidence of a rushed paint job.
29:47Which suggests the Capri's had a new wing fitted.
29:50When they sealed it with paint, moisture was trapped underneath the paint.
29:56So over the years, it's oxidised and it's pushed the paint up.
29:59But the good news is, is the structure of the wing is actually really solid.
30:05This is the only bad bit, but we are going to be able to repair this.
30:09You are looking rather orange, eh?
30:12It's yellow, man. I like a minion.
30:15More like an Oompa Loompa.
30:16If you feel...
30:26What someone's done is stuck a little square patch over what was probably an aerial hole.
30:32Moisture's going to get behind there, corrode this area and push the paint up.
30:37A proper fix will mean welding a piece of metal seamlessly in place.
30:42That's not a bad first cut.
30:44Also known as Frenching.
30:47So my new little fillet needs a little bit of shape.
30:51Just a tiny bit.
30:53The key to Frenching though, is it has to fit perfectly.
30:57Now these little magnets help hold it flush.
31:04I'm going to let that cool down for a second.
31:07Before knocking it back with a grinder.
31:09Man, this is the moment that a restorer breathes a sigh of relief.
31:16We've saved loads of money.
31:19Sanding it ourselves will save cash.
31:22But a paint job and those re-chrome bumpers will set me back over a grand.
31:27Clawing it back relies on Detective Dad proving once and for all she's a GT.
31:32If I can get my Capri looking the business, I reckon there's a big profit to be made.
31:46Her body shell's getting a respray, which means I now know the official colour.
31:50Signal Orange.
31:55Yeah, don't tell Duncan.
31:59And her bumpers have been given a new lease of life at the Cromers.
32:03After being chemically stripped back to bare steel, the bumpers are polished to a mirror finish.
32:10What I'm trying to do is get all the pit holes out as much as possible.
32:17So there's no lines.
32:20So when you plate it, it'll come out nice and bright.
32:23Next, they pass through more chemical vats.
32:2718 in total.
32:29Which etch on nickel using an electric current.
32:33Before neutralizing.
32:35So they're safe to touch.
32:42At 600 quid, re-chroming the bumpers hasn't come cheap.
32:47And they're not the only things getting the premium restoration treatment.
32:52Imran's finished ice blasting the dining room ceiling beams.
32:58And you're even sweeping up.
33:03You've got to clean up.
33:05Man, these look amazing.
33:07Was it really caked on there? Was it hard to do?
33:09Certain bits were. You had a lot of filler in this, I'd say.
33:11So that sort of just explodes as soon as we hit that.
33:15Yeah, I was walking past the window a few times and all it looked like was a Hollywood movie.
33:18Explosion in there.
33:19Explosion.
33:20It's lifted the whole room.
33:21It looked brilliant.
33:23Legend.
33:24I mean, obviously, keep sweeping up.
33:26Okay.
33:28The ice blasting is costing me 450 quid.
33:35So it would be really helpful if Dad could don his detective hat and prove the Capri is a valuable GT model.
33:41I'm John.
33:43Nigel.
33:44Come in in, Nigel.
33:46John Hill is the chairman and owner of the Capri Club International.
33:50With the world's most extensive archive of Capri information at his fingertips.
33:53So the car we've got is a Ford Capri advertised as a GXL.
34:00So have a look at these.
34:01Super, yeah.
34:02We've got that number, but we don't have the big plate with all the numbers on.
34:07Well, that's it.
34:08The big plate with all the numbers on would have told you the trim package, which would have defined it as a GT.
34:14We think it's been lost over the years.
34:17So what is that number then?
34:18That's the chassis number.
34:19A B means it was built in Britain and another B means it's Hailwood.
34:24E stands for Capri.
34:26C stands for coupe.
34:27The next two letters are really important.
34:30M would be 72 and the B would stand for January.
34:35Not a GXL then, because the GXL didn't come out in 72.
34:39It would have had twin headlights.
34:41Has it got twin headlights?
34:42No.
34:43It's not a GXL.
34:44I think the owner was probably confused.
34:47Okay, well, Ant now thinks there's a possibility it's a GT, which I think is more valuable.
34:53Is that right?
34:54Oh, definitely. That was the top of the range.
34:55I mean, we're talking a 100 mile an hour car.
34:58Wow.
34:59Yeah.
35:00It would have a performance engine, which is quite difficult to ascertain without virtually
35:05taking the cylinder head off.
35:06But it has got the correct exhaust manifold and it's got the twin Webber carburetor.
35:11As soon as you step inside the car, you'll be looking at the dashboard.
35:15Six pod dashboard.
35:17Okay, John, two big dials.
35:19Yeah, the rev counter and the speed on.
35:20And four small ones.
35:21Yeah, oil pressure and fuel and amateurs.
35:23Okay, so that's the six then.
35:25So the evidence points to it being a GT, but the plot thickens.
35:31Could it also be the even higher spec GT XLR, short for extra luxury refinement?
35:38Yeah.
35:39So this package would involve a number of extras.
35:42Recline seats.
35:43Yeah, got that.
35:44The back bench seats would have a centre console armrest.
35:48Yeah.
35:49You would have a centre console in the car itself with a leather covered gear knob, a time clock.
35:54So you can pretty much tell us, from looking at these photographs, that we've got a Ford Capri GT XLR.
36:01Definitely.
36:02With the whole package, everything.
36:04That's what everybody aspires to.
36:07Brilliant.
36:08There's no more extras to hand to it, really.
36:10You've got the right colour as well, by the way.
36:11Brilliant.
36:12Oh, and it's going to be pleased with that information.
36:14Thank you so much.
36:15My Capri is back from its respray, ready for the final fit-out.
36:22Check it out.
36:24Looks brand new.
36:26It looks like it rolled out the Ford factory door.
36:29Definitely looking orange.
36:31It's...
36:32Actually, do you know what?
36:33The official colour...
36:34Go on.
36:35It's yellow.
36:36Yellow.
36:37It's yellow, yeah.
36:38What?
36:39Officially, Ford called this yellow.
36:41What?
36:42Like, signal orange yellow.
36:44You looked it up, didn't you?
36:47Alright, it's signal orange.
36:48Well, to me, she'll always be yellow.
36:51And back from the Cromers, it's our original bumpers.
36:55You know what?
36:56This car's really come alive.
36:59Right, front one.
37:01Don't you scratch it.
37:04There's not a person on the planet who would drive this and not look cool.
37:12And I'm swapping out the factory fitted steel Rostar wheels for a stylish upgrade.
37:21Wow.
37:22RS alloys.
37:23See, I knew you'd like the shiny bit.
37:25Like a magpie.
37:26A Dagonon magpie.
37:27Definitely.
37:28These alloys cost over 350 quid, but were still cheaper than having the old ones re-chromed.
37:35How are you getting on?
37:41Yeah, we're there.
37:42We are crushing the Capri game.
37:44This car's done.
37:45I love those wheels and tyres.
37:46Well, they had a bit of bling.
37:47They give it a little bit of muscle.
37:48We want to have that fast forward feel.
37:50Beautiful.
37:51And just the car's perfect.
37:56So I've got some news.
37:57I went to see John the Capri guy.
37:59Spill it out.
38:00There's no way this is a GXL.
38:01It was misadvertised.
38:02Wrong year.
38:03No double headlight.
38:05So this is a genuine GT?
38:07XLR.
38:09This is the jackpot.
38:10There is such a bigger marketplace for a GT.
38:13It's probably worth 10, 20% more.
38:15So do you want the privilege of putting the badge on?
38:17Okay.
38:18Do I need a mallet or a hammer or?
38:20If you go anywhere near this with a mallet, you'll be in trouble.
38:23Gently push it on and do not scratch the paint.
38:30Now to tot up what I've spent on top of the ten and a half grand I bought her for.
38:35Right, mechanical parts, £232.51.
38:40Paint, my mate did us a solid 500 quid.
38:44Bumpers, £600.
38:46Expensive, but look how they transform the car.
38:48Beautiful.
38:49The wheels, £352.
38:51And I've added a little bit for miscellaneous, giving us a grand total of restoration costs of £1,684.51.
38:59Which means right now, this 1972 Mark 1 Ford Capri GT XLR owes us £12,184.51.
39:18But before I sell her, there's two 70s boy racers whose Capri fix is long overdue.
39:29Oh my gosh, it actually handles beautifully.
39:34She comes all right, doesn't she?
39:35Oh man, this is epic.
39:38I'm just going to throw my little elbow out.
39:40I'm already there.
39:41I could sense it.
39:42I could sense full 70s legend.
39:44I'm back in the day.
39:47Oh yeah.
39:48Tight left.
39:49This is absolutely flying.
39:52Sounds great, handles great.
39:54I'll tell you what, doing the steering's made all the difference.
39:56Yeah, I mean it rides beautiful, doesn't it?
39:59It's absolutely effortless.
40:01Someone is going to be getting a really beautiful Capri.
40:04Woo!
40:05Turns in beautifully.
40:06I'm feeling quite queasy now.
40:08What a great car.
40:15Oh man, how cool was that?
40:17That was pretty epic.
40:19I'd need to sit down after that though.
40:21My driving wasn't that bad.
40:22It was.
40:24Yeah, this car handles really well.
40:25See, the steering is now completely buttoned up.
40:28The rack is solid mounted.
40:29The column is solid fixed.
40:31And when you go round those country lanes, man, it was worth it.
40:35It makes me shudder thinking if someone hadn't have caught that steering issue,
40:39you're in the hedge, or worse.
40:41And then you've got the mystery.
40:43We have just discovered an unrealized GTXLR.
40:46This is an important car in the Ford story, but an important car in the UK car story.
40:51And that means another one's on the road.
40:54Yeah, our work here is done.
40:55We are ready.
40:56This car is going to go and find a new owner.
40:59The moment has arrived.
41:05It's the auction at Silverstone Festival in Northamptonshire.
41:11About to go under the hammer alongside 342 other classics, from minis to Ferraris,
41:18is my 1972 Mark 1 Ford Capri GTXLR, lot number 654.
41:26Because of the colour, it stands out amongst all these other cars.
41:29Yeah, the orange really pops.
41:30Yeah, all right, it's orange.
41:34You know, I've sold a lot of cars at auction.
41:36And some you win, some you lose, and that's the gamble you take.
41:39But if this car doesn't make money, I'd be absolutely going.
41:44I feel nervous.
41:45Do you want to go in?
41:46Yeah, come on.
41:47Yeah?
41:48Let's see what awaits.
41:49Take us on to look 654, the 1972 Ford Capri Mark 1, 1.6 GTXLR.
42:00Right.
42:01It owes us 12,100.
42:046,000, 6,500.
42:066,500, 7,000.
42:087,000.
42:09Come on, get through the bids.
42:108,500, up to go 9.
42:12Bids at 10,000.
42:13Bids at 10,000.
42:16Bids at 10,000.
42:18Why has it gone quiet?
42:19Bids at 10,000.
42:20Online swap break.
42:21Bids at 10,000.
42:22Bids at 10,000.
42:25Come on.
42:2610,005.
42:2811,000.
42:29Four phones on it.
42:31Oh, my God.
42:3211,500.
42:34Come on, get us into profit.
42:3613,000.
42:37We've done this now.
42:38Yes.
42:40Is that the limit then?
42:41Are we down at 13,000?
42:43Are there any more?
42:46Go on, one more bid.
42:48One more bid.
42:50We're all there then.
42:51Are we at 13,000?
42:52We sell the card.
42:53No, we're 13,500.
42:54Back in London, they're still keeping.
42:55Oh, that's exceptional.
42:5714,000 now.
42:59What?
43:00We're there, it's 14.
43:0115,000.
43:0215,000.
43:035,500.
43:04Last chance, London at 15,000.
43:06Gathers up selling at 15,000.
43:1315,000, well done.
43:16That car deserves to be mid-teens.
43:18Oh, my God.
43:1915 grand.
43:20We've just made 2,800 profit.
43:24Mate, good job.
43:26Good job, mate.
43:27I feel like we need to go get a drink
43:29because we've made some profit.
43:30We can go spend some of it.
43:32We've still got to pay for the house.
43:34I know, but if I got a glass of champagne,
43:36wouldn't hurt anyone.
43:37Come on.
43:38Have a great day.
43:39I'd like you to thank our shi Epheders fan.
43:40Bye.
43:42See you later.
43:43See you later.
43:44Bye.
43:46Bye.
43:48Bye.
43:50Bye.
43:51Good.
43:52Bye.
43:57Bye.
43:58Bye.
43:59Bye.
44:00've gone.
