00:00I'm Ant Anstead, and when it comes to cars, I can fix almost anything.
00:08Oh, there she goes!
00:11When it comes to houses, not so much.
00:17I'm supercharging my mission.
00:20Oh my God!
00:22Fixing up and flipping eight more classic motors.
00:25You look like Laura Denardi, you do!
00:29Because the 500-year-old farmhouse I bought for my parents to retire in...
00:34...is a crumbling money pit.
00:37I would brace yourself, cos it ain't gonna be cheap.
00:40But I won't be defeated.
00:42Yeah! It's beautiful, isn't it?
00:44I want Mum and Dad moved in before summer ends.
00:47We'll call it glamping, shall we?
00:49Right, that's the spirit.
00:51And with the help of family...
00:53I did it!
00:55...and my petrolhead pal, Duncan.
00:58Yay!
00:59Come on then, let's go!
01:01I'm determined to turn cars into cash.
01:05Whoa!
01:06Even...
01:07Ah!
01:08...if it kills me.
01:09Woo!
01:10Woo!
01:11My dream of getting Mum and Dad moved into the front four rooms...
01:24...before summer's out is gathering pace.
01:27With the back of the house condemned...
01:30...my brother Michael's putting all the effort into the front.
01:34...removing the last ten and a half tons of concrete render.
01:39Present for you.
01:42That's the very last bit.
01:44That's the last piece of concrete.
01:46I'm keeping that as a trophy in the workshop.
01:48Ten and a half tons!
01:50But with just four months until the end of the summer...
01:53...I'll need to keep the car profit rolling in.
01:58I've got a lead on a classic car that seems like a bargain...
02:02...but it means a 250 mile trip out west.
02:05Oh, wow, look at that view.
02:08The Devon coastline.
02:10And I'm bringing my dad Nigel along...
02:12...with good reason.
02:13What was your first car?
02:14Oh, my first car.
02:15You always remember your first car.
02:17Hawker 72.
02:18It was a 1957 Morris Minor.
02:21I got it for my 18th birthday.
02:23My parents bought it off of Uncle Ron.
02:25This is going to be a great day.
02:27Oh, it's a Morris Minor?
02:28It's a Morris Minor.
02:30This is a 1963 Morris Minor Traveller.
02:35The woody one.
02:36The one with the wood in it.
02:37We have one of those as well.
02:39Because Mum wanted something we could go away for weekends in...
02:43...and we could sleep in the back.
02:45And I was much more flexible in those days.
02:47That was when Brother Tim was born, our first child.
02:51Because I can remember picking Mum up from the hospital with Tim...
02:54...baby in arms in the Morris Traveller...
02:57...and bringing him back to the pub.
03:00Mum and Dad weren't the only ones who were mad for the Morris.
03:06Launched in 1947, it became the first million-selling car.
03:11Created by the mastermind behind the Mini, Alec Izagonis...
03:15...the Morris Minor was affordable, practical and reliable.
03:19The station wagon-style Traveller came out in 1953.
03:23Its lightweight ash frame needed specialist craftsmen...
03:27...so it was only ever made in the UK.
03:29But rotting timber work and rust has left only around 830 on British roads today.
03:35The one we're seeing was advertised online at £7,750.
03:41Can I tell you another little nugget?
03:42Go on.
03:43The seller of this car's name...
03:47...is Nigel.
03:48You're joking.
03:49If it's owned by a Nigel, it's got to be good.
03:52Oh, is that the rule?
03:53Oh, yeah.
03:58Hello, Ant.
03:59Nigel.
04:00Nigel.
04:01Hello, Nigel.
04:02It's a coincidence.
04:03Nice to meet you.
04:04And you.
04:05It's in the garage just round the corner.
04:06Shall we?
04:07Round there?
04:08Yes.
04:09Is that somebody else's gardener?
04:10Well, basically, it's a family car.
04:12It's been in our family since new.
04:14This is a one-owner car?
04:15It is.
04:16Oh, wow.
04:21Oh!
04:22Wow.
04:23Look at the woodwork.
04:24It's undergone a thorough bodywork restoration, before sitting in this garage for the last
04:3315 years.
04:34Oh, so much better condition than mine was.
04:36Oh, it's pretty spectacular.
04:38Sell and Nigel's parents bought it in 1963.
04:43Like my Nigel, he learnt to drive in it.
04:46And he got his first speeding ticket in it.
04:48So what does she need?
04:50All the focus was on the bodywork and the woodwork.
04:53The mechanics will need a really good overhaul.
04:56Some parts are missing.
04:58It's not absolutely complete.
05:00Everything should be in the boxes in the garage.
05:03So do you mind if we have, say, maybe 10, 15 minutes, look around the car?
05:07Be my guest, Ange.
05:08You're more than welcome to.
05:09Appreciate it.
05:11Thanks, Nigel.
05:13It's like just out in the factory.
05:15Joe, you can see when somebody's done a proper restoration.
05:19And it's little things like the shut line there on the door is absolutely perfect.
05:24The panels are incredible.
05:26It's the straightest Morris Minor I think I've seen in a while.
05:29And I love the colour.
05:30It's just unbelievable.
05:31Seat's ripped.
05:36There's also no gear stick.
05:39Oh, there's no gearbox.
05:42All right, now this is where we have the problems.
05:46The gearbox hangs off the engine.
05:48I bet there's no engine.
05:49So there's a lot of mechanical stuff to be done.
05:51That is an engine.
05:52It's not mechanical stuff.
05:53It's the heart of the car.
05:54The gearbox could have been separate from the engine.
05:56I'll damn you a Cornish pasty.
05:58There's no engine.
05:59Pasties are on.
06:01You.
06:06Oh.
06:07Oh my gosh.
06:08Well, let's look at the positives.
06:10I mean, it's incredibly solid.
06:12The restoration is really beautiful.
06:14Obviously this radiator's loose.
06:17Loose we can deal with.
06:19At least it's bloody there.
06:22Right.
06:23He said some bits are in boxes in the garage.
06:27Ah.
06:28That could be the gearbox thing.
06:31Bits and bulbs.
06:33I don't know what's in there.
06:36Aha.
06:38There it is.
06:39One engine.
06:41Okay.
06:42Careful.
06:44That's okay.
06:46Is that good?
06:47That's moving?
06:48Yeah.
06:49That means it's free.
06:50The fact the flywheel turns is a sign the crankshaft and pistons aren't seized.
06:55But until I run tests, I've got no idea if it still fires.
06:59It's a massive gamble, as replacing it could cost me over a grand.
07:04What do you know about the engine in there?
07:05The engine was all good when it was taken off the road in 1984-ish.
07:1040 years ago.
07:11But it's had oil down the bores through the plug holes, and I have been turning it over.
07:15So every Wednesday, 4 o'clock.
07:18Not quite so regularly as that.
07:21If I get it running, this stunning Morish traveller could fetch up to 15 grand.
07:27Meaning a big profit, if I can haggle a good price out of Nigel 2.0.
07:31So right now, she's for sale for 7,750.
07:34Yes, that's right.
07:35And there is still a series of unknowns.
07:37Yes.
07:38That exist on the floor in the garage.
07:40Can we start at 7 grand?
07:41Of course.
07:42You can start there, Ant.
07:44I wouldn't be happy with dropping that much.
07:4771?
07:49I'm very reluctant.
07:507,250.
07:51500 quid off.
07:52Can we go up a little bit more, Ant?
07:53Okay, we'll go up another 100 quid.
07:557,350.
07:56Yes, we've got that.
07:57Dudes!
07:58Happy with that.
07:59Okay.
08:00Nigel.
08:02Under 7,500 for a picture-perfect Morish Miner traveller should feel like a bargain.
08:08What takes the shine off is that empty engine bay.
08:12Upside, at least I won the bet.
08:15This is delicious, by the way.
08:16Mmm.
08:18Smells good.
08:19Tastes even better.
08:22Hey, what's she got there?
08:24You bought a timber-framed house.
08:25You didn't need to buy a timber-framed car.
08:27Are you kidding me?
08:28This is beautiful.
08:30Dude, come down and check it out.
08:33I'll tell you what, the wood.
08:34Right?
08:35It's the way they've done all the joints.
08:36It's all been done...
08:38Proper.
08:39As Nigel said, proper.
08:42Oh, my God.
08:45Yeah, the engine's not there.
08:47But we do have the engine.
08:50So we don't know what condition the engine's in?
08:53No, that's the gamble.
08:55You broke the golden rule.
08:57Well, there's many golden rules.
08:58Which one did I break?
08:59Starting and listening to the engine.
09:02But this is typical you, ain't it, eh?
09:04What is?
09:06Buying a car with no engine in it.
09:07No gearbox.
09:09High risk.
09:10You've just looked at it,
09:11because it looks pretty.
09:13Go on, then.
09:14What sort of money do you have to pay for something like this?
09:16$7,350.
09:17Wow.
09:18I don't think selling the car is going to be a problem.
09:21Worst-case scenario, Knight.
09:23We'll just stick you in there and you can run along like the Flintstones.
09:26Yeah, very funny.
09:27Thank you very much.
09:31But before we start on the engine,
09:33Duncan's found an urgent structural issue with the house.
09:37He's been working on heritage timber homes for over 35 years,
09:42so he knows his stuff.
09:44This one's completely loose.
09:47The sill beam as well.
09:48These are all supposed to be connected.
09:51So all that render was probably in some ways doing...
09:55Holding the house up.
09:57Without the concrete render to support it,
09:59the house is in danger of collapse.
10:02To secure it, all the horizontal sill beams need replacing.
10:05And to do that, the whole building must be raised up.
10:09So I think you're going to have to get a couple of quotes in.
10:13But I would brace yourself.
10:16Because that ain't going to be cheap.
10:20Alright, I'll make some calls and see if we can get a cost.
10:24And timescale.
10:26Sooner rather than later.
10:27This doesn't want to go through the winter like this.
10:30I knew the house's back wing was hazardous,
10:32but I thought the front was safe.
10:34And now there's signs of danger everywhere.
10:37See the base of the wall?
10:41That panel's bowing.
10:44I'm praying that we can just prop the house up for now,
10:47while I find out exactly how much replacing the sill beams will set me back.
10:54All the more reason to get my Morris Miner's original engine firing.
10:58And avoid forking out a grand for a replacement.
11:02Right, what do you know about this then?
11:05What do I know about the engine?
11:06I know it's been off the road for about 40 years.
11:10And it comes with a box of bits.
11:14Exhausting carburetor.
11:17Distributor.
11:18What else you got in there?
11:21Starter.
11:22Well, it's not seized.
11:23That's alright.
11:24In fact, do you want to whack a battery and some dumplings on that and see if it cranks?
11:27I'll see if we can get a bit of life into it.
11:29If this starter motor works, we stand a chance of getting this engine firing today.
11:34Say a little prayer.
11:35Hey!
11:38She's alive!
11:40That's one less thing we have to worry about.
11:42Do you know what? Let's bolt the starter motor into this.
11:45Turn it over a bit of speed and see if we have compression.
11:48A compression test will show us what state the cylinders are in.
11:52Old school hot wiring.
11:54This takes you back to your car-stealing days.
11:57Oh, I'm on cue.
11:59Replacing the spark plugs with a compression tester will give us a critical PSI reading.
12:05It'll reveal if the cylinders can still create enough pressure to combust the fuel-air mix.
12:11Otherwise, this engine's next to useless.
12:14If this is a healthy engine, we should be looking at probably over a...
12:20120?
12:21Yeah, over.
12:22150 would be nice.
12:23150, I was going to say.
12:24Go on, then.
12:26Right.
12:27Just to say a little prayer to the engine gods.
12:31Oh, please.
12:42Go on.
12:46Oh, what do you think?
12:47What do you think?
12:49We're testing if the Morris Miner's engine can still generate enough compression for combustion.
12:54A reading below 150 PSI means the cylinder is toast.
12:59I don't think that's got a lot of squeeze in that.
13:05Ooh, 70.
13:08That'll push.
13:09So, one of the four is low compression.
13:13All right, next one.
13:15You ready?
13:21Okay, it's worse.
13:23Yeah, 40.
13:24This engine is absolutely not creating enough compression.
13:29So, somewhere in the cylinder, air is escaping, probably past the rings, which are no doubt seized, or rusty, or cracked, or worse.
13:38It's scored a load of grooves inside the cylinder bore, and now air is escaping out of that.
13:42Bottom line is, even if one of them is toast, it's a rebuilt engine.
13:46You ain't got no squeeze.
13:48The way I see it, we've got two options.
13:51Option A, we run down the alleyway of rebuilding this engine, which means we've got to take it apart, we've got to get parts, we've got to throw a load of labour at it.
13:58Could be a never-ending list.
13:59Option B, look for a new engine.
14:03By the time we've cleaned this, new bearings, piston rings, hones, skim the head.
14:09And yes, it comes with a load of risks and high labour.
14:12Well then, let's make the originality the defining moment, then.
14:17If that engine is the engine that left the factory when the car was manufactured, it adds more value.
14:24Ultimately, I'm going to give Nigel a call, and I'm just going to ask him,
14:27has this car in its life had an engine change?
14:30If the answer's yes, then there's no value to this engine.
14:33We might as well go get a new one.
14:35Poor little engine.
14:37I'd have bought it with no engine.
14:39I think you did.
14:42The last thing I want is to spend time and money on an engine,
14:46especially as I'm facing costly structure repairs to the house.
14:50Getting mum and dad moved in by the end of summer is sounding less likely than ever.
14:54It's crazy, isn't it?
14:57It is.
14:58Dust everywhere.
15:00What he's done so far is great.
15:02But I think of the practicalities, it's going to be like glamping.
15:06It's when we did that when we were younger.
15:10And we're not younger anymore.
15:12All the problems that were found, though.
15:13You couldn't have predicted that.
15:14A fairness to Anthony.
15:15It can be a pain, though, can't it?
15:17As you can as well.
15:20Yeah, all right, don't rub it in.
15:22Yeah.
15:32Right, I spoke to Nigel.
15:33Yeah?
15:34That is not the original engine.
15:36Decision made, then.
15:38Decision made.
15:39So it looks like I need to find a refurbished one online.
15:45What are you looking at?
15:47I'm trying to find a Morris Minor engine online, and actually, ah, this is the one.
15:51That looks clean.
15:52Yeah.
15:53This is good.
15:54How easy is it to find these engines?
15:56They're quite common engines.
15:57They're used in loads of other cars, not just Morris Minor's.
16:00You know, like Austin A30s, Riley's, Mini.
16:02So getting hold of an A-Series engine is quite easy.
16:04The key is to get hold of the right one.
16:06Reconditioned, ready to go, so we can just drop it in.
16:09It's roughly the right money.
16:11900 quid.
16:12It's in Wiltshire.
16:13So it's a couple of hours of a drive.
16:15And it might mean a little road trip for you to Wiltshire.
16:19I wondered where this was going.
16:22But almost a grand spent on a new engine means less car profit to cover the new sill beams
16:27that are needed to make the house structurally sound.
16:30Yo.
16:32How are we doing?
16:33Duncan and I have both got quotes, and it's not sounding cheap.
16:37Oak repairs.
16:38Now bear in mind we've got to do effectively three sides.
16:41The front, left-hand side, the side, and the rear.
16:46It's about 60 metres of sill beam, and then you've got the labour,
16:49then you've got the props to pick the house up.
16:53To do one side is 6,800.
16:57It's like 20 grand.
16:58I did make a call.
17:01So, a friend of mine done me a good deal onto timber.
17:06Now, normally you have four good faces on a bit of oak, in case you want to show it all in the corner beam.
17:12But these, they might have a little bit of bark on one side.
17:15So maybe only three sides are good.
17:18But it'll do all four for 400 quid.
17:22I mean, that's amazing.
17:24But what about the labour?
17:25Can you and me prop the house, remove the old beam, cut the uprights, put a new beam in?
17:33How many houses have you underpinned?
17:36I have never underpinned a house. How many have you underpinned?
17:39Probably 30.
17:41Will you do it with me?
17:43If I am full on support, labour...
17:46It's not give your hand and run away.
17:49You need to be on this.
17:51I appreciate it.
17:53You are saving a ton of cash.
17:54It wouldn't be done without you.
17:56Well, you ask me how many I've done, but I don't know how many are still standing.
17:59You're out of order.
18:06And there's good progress on the Morris Minor Front 2.
18:10Hey, check it out then.
18:14All right!
18:17Well, it's exactly what we need.
18:19It looks pretty good, actually.
18:22So what was the deal on this one?
18:23We've got a carburetor, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, flywheel, starter motor, distributor, dynamo, coil.
18:31It's even got a couple of hoses and even the HT leads are thrown in.
18:35We paid 900 quid for the lot.
18:38That's good, Mike.
18:40Spark plugs were thrown in as well.
18:42And it's fairly clean.
18:44This car hasn't driven under its own steam for decades.
18:47This is the key to our Morris Minor turning a wheel.
18:51Again.
18:54While Duncan gets back to his day job.
18:59Before we can fit the engine, I need to assemble the driveline that's currently in bits.
19:05Well, I know this is a radiator.
19:07That lives at the front of the engine.
19:09Gearbox goes around about here.
19:11And I've no idea what works or what's missing.
19:15What else have we got?
19:17And how much more cash I need to fork out on parts.
19:19Well, that's going to save us a few quid because that's a brand new clutch.
19:25Alright, this is the prop shaft.
19:28That's the gearbox mount.
19:30Yeah, that goes under there.
19:32Look.
19:33That's the complete driveline.
19:34Yeah.
19:35If you think about it.
19:36What else is there?
19:37I know what that is.
19:39My car had one of those.
19:41Starter handle.
19:43It is?
19:44Yeah.
19:45My 57 Morris Minor had a starter handle.
19:48Oh, yeah, it is.
19:49There.
19:50Look.
19:51Yeah.
19:52I do remember some things, you know.
19:53Yeah, that's cool.
19:55So, we're missing exhaust.
19:57But with the engine, we've got the manifold.
19:59So, we only need the rear pipe back box.
20:02And the things that hold it up, those strap things.
20:04Yep, the exhaust mounts.
20:08While my dad cleans up the prop shaft and brackets ready for a respray,
20:13I want to see if the new clutch fits the original gearbox.
20:17It's an earlier, more complex style of clutch,
20:19which uses multiple coiled springs around the pressure plate.
20:23Now, later, clutches moved to diaphragm clutches, which gave a more even pressure.
20:27But, because our Morris is early, this is the right clutch for the age of this car.
20:32So, if I put this on, could you please rotate the front lower crank?
20:37And then, if I line that up.
20:42Alright, just twist it a little bit.
20:44Oh.
20:45Oh my gosh, that's it.
20:46You're in.
20:47Yeah, that was it.
20:48You must have some Morris Minor luck going on this morning.
20:52I remember doing the starting up a car in the winter when the battery was dead.
20:55On that.
20:56Yeah.
20:57I've never been prouder.
20:58Good.
20:59Other than the reconditioned engine, I've no guarantee that any of these parts actually work.
21:05And I still have to fit the entire drive line into the car.
21:09But that's got to be easier than lifting a whole house and fitting structurally critical sill beams.
21:17Fingers.
21:18At 400 quid for the lot, Duncan's cut a great deal.
21:23But with each beam weighing the same as a grand piano, I'm starting to wonder if this is a DIY job too far.
21:29Yeah.
21:30All my life.
21:31I've spent 900 quid on a refurbished engine I hope will get my Morris Minor traveller running.
21:48But first, we've got to fit it.
21:51I've got limited access in the barn and just a basic engine hoist.
21:54You won't have to go to the gym.
21:57Making it tricky to achieve a steep enough angle.
22:04Right, go on then, pick it up.
22:08Oh man, it's literally, I reckon, another two inches.
22:11Drop the jacks.
22:16All right, it's coming down now.
22:17Yeah, let's go down.
22:22Right, that's the front lower.
22:25Hang on.
22:27Oh man, this is tight.
22:36Go on.
22:38One wrong move could damage the engine and the Morris' immaculate paintwork.
22:43This is how tight it is.
22:45Like millimetres.
22:47But even if we get it in...
22:49Just got to clear them nuts, that's it.
22:55We've still got to line it up with the mounts to secure it.
22:58Okay.
23:00Right, you're going to have to get underneath.
23:01Yeah.
23:02Just think you have to get underneath with your bare hands, dude.
23:04Muscle it.
23:06Just go rip it up.
23:08Yeah.
23:10It's got to come down a bit more.
23:11Yeah.
23:13How are we looking?
23:15It's lining up with the mounts quite nicely.
23:19What happened?
23:23Did you drop it?
23:24It's getting quite heavy now, isn't it?
23:28Yeah, we're stuck now.
23:31Why does that not want to go down?
23:34I'm going to have to remove the mount.
23:42Attach it to the engine.
23:44Right, going down successfully now.
23:47And then secure it in place.
23:49Yes!
23:50Don't move!
23:51Don't move!
23:52Don't move!
23:55Gosh!
23:57You've got lovely eyes.
23:59Why, push this one through.
24:02Perfect.
24:04Oh my gosh.
24:06We are now cooking on camping gas.
24:08Engine secured and the gearbox hooked up to the driveline.
24:11It's crunch time.
24:12It's crunch time.
24:13This car hasn't started in decades.
24:15Turn the key.
24:16Turn the key.
24:17Turn the key.
24:19Okay.
24:20Where's the button?
24:21Where's the button?
24:22Nothing's happening.
24:23Right there.
24:24The S on it.
24:25Right.
24:26Do it.
24:28Hey!
24:32Go on, put it in second!
24:36And we're moving!
24:38Light!
24:40Yes!
24:41All right, kill it because we haven't got any coolant in there.
24:45This is great!
24:47Engine runs.
24:49Gearbox works because we've obviously turned the rear wheels.
24:53Our driveline is complete.
24:54So let's get the cooling system done.
24:56I'll order an exhaust and then I'll just want to drive it.
24:58Before any road trips, I also need to give the brakes an overhaul.
25:05But first, there's the urgent issue of making the house structurally sound.
25:10So we're going to tackle this wall.
25:13Which basically means we're going to put four acros on the top beam, four acros on the bottom beam, lift it up, put the new oak beam in.
25:22Exactly what we're going to do.
25:25What's the risks?
25:26A full stand.
25:29First, we need to fit a plank in the panel room to prop the inside.
25:32To lift a bit.
25:33That's good.
25:37Then on the outside, we'll slide on strong boys.
25:41God, they're heavy, aren't they?
25:42Steel blades that fit on top of the prop stands and create a shelf to slide under the beam.
25:47It's going.
25:51God, it's creaking.
25:52It's creaking.
25:54These should take the weight of the house.
25:57Can you hear the noise?
26:00I can see it.
26:02Yeah, loose, loose, loose.
26:05This is the most weight though, isn't it?
26:07Oh my God, that is loose.
26:11There's no way that is carrying the whole house.
26:14Yeah, she's floating.
26:15Absolutely.
26:16With the weight taken off them, we can now remove the old sill beams.
26:27There you go.
26:28Oh my God, the whole house is hovering.
26:33Think about, the house is built like a skeleton, a car chassis in oak, and it's just rested on a beam at the bottom.
26:41And we've lifted it.
26:45So right now it's just hovering on six hand-adjusted acro props.
26:50Yeah, this is a, this is a big, nervous moment.
26:58That's crazy.
27:01While Michael cleans up the area ready to install the new sill beam,
27:06we've got unfinished business with the Morris Miner.
27:09Right, guide that end in for me buddy.
27:13Attaching the original radiator means we can move on from the engine bay.
27:18Woohoo!
27:20This new exhaust pipe set me back to 65 quid.
27:23Now that exhaust pipe is clamped with this clamp to the cast manifold.
27:27All right, that should self-support now.
27:34Yeah, that's it.
27:35Yeah?
27:36Yeah.
27:37All right, do you want to stay there and get comfortable and I'll pass you the middle section.
27:42Take that one, bud.
27:44Lovely.
27:46If this exhaust system isn't completely secure, our Morris won't be fuel efficient and could leak dangerous fumes.
27:53Right, you've just got to spin it.
27:55Wiggle, wiggle.
27:57Yeah.
27:58Is that airtight?
28:00One more.
28:02That's it.
28:03Get these clamps tight.
28:08Take your time, buddy.
28:09Right.
28:10Yeah, you just chill at the back there.
28:13That's it then.
28:15Fire up by a cup.
28:16All right!
28:20Right, you ready, Dunk?
28:21Yeah.
28:24Wait!
28:34Any leaks?
28:35No leaks.
28:37Perfect.
28:40She runs.
28:41Now, I need to make sure she stops.
28:45I've spent 130 quid on new brake parts, but I've kept the receipts in the hope of salvaging as much as I can.
28:52These brake shoes are actually quite usable.
28:54Bear in mind they've been sat inside that drum for 40 years doing no work.
29:00Yeah, it'll save a few quid.
29:02If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
29:05But these brake pipes aren't looking so great.
29:09We're just going to remake this one because this one's got some nasty little kinks in it.
29:16The rusty cylinders also need replacing.
29:19Oh my God, it's fighting me!
29:22Come on!
29:24That one is seized.
29:27Ah!
29:29What are you laughing at?
29:30Just like the thought of you in paint, to be honest.
29:32Idiot.
29:33Oh, I'm bleeding now as well.
29:35Oh, babes.
29:36Now I've bled over the Morris.
29:40Does that make it a bleeding Morris?
29:42Bleeding Morris.
29:44Okay, there it is.
29:46Oh my gosh.
29:48The back plate cleaned and painted.
29:51Now to attach the new cylinders.
29:54Hey, Dunk, is that pipe ready?
29:56Yeah, all done.
29:58Is it going to fit?
29:59What, first time?
30:03Dude, that slotted straight in.
30:06Next, it's the brand new bleed nipple.
30:09Flexible hose.
30:11And finally, those salvaged brake shoes.
30:12Before I put on the drum, I need to make use of the Morris' ingenious brake adjuster.
30:19There's a tiny little cam in there that either decreases or increases the distance of the shoe away from the drum.
30:26But what I want to do is have it in its smallest position, right there.
30:32That way it's easier to get the drum on.
30:43Now with that drum freely spinning,
30:46I now want to hit those adjusters through that hole.
30:53So all I'm doing is rotating it on that cam
30:59till I can feel it starts to lean against the drum.
31:02Too little, and it's going to take a big pedal engagement before it touches the drum.
31:07Too much, and the car's not going to rotate.
31:10It's actually going to be in a state of constant braking.
31:15Yeah, you can now hear it.
31:18It's slightly different.
31:19It's under a little bit of pressure.
31:22It's just kissing the inside of the drum.
31:25The Morris' braking system is now fully restored to its former glory.
31:32I can't wait to test it.
31:34Right, hit the pedal when you're ready.
31:36Ready?
31:38Oh, my God!
31:40Boom!
31:42That is it. In fact, that is the Morris Minor, mechanically sound.
31:47She runs.
31:49She drives.
31:50She stops.
31:51She steers.
31:52She cools.
31:53She fuels.
31:54And she looks like a legendary vehicle.
31:56That's a lot of ticks.
31:59Lower her down!
32:01If I can get the interior just as perfect,
32:04I've got high hopes our Morris could make good money at auction.
32:07But that'll count for nothing if we don't make savings by making the house structurally secure ourselves.
32:19Using taller sill beams means we only need to trim the bottom, rotten part of the upright,
32:25retaining as much of the original oak as possible, and keeping the council happy too.
32:30Mine full of fingers, because we're tired, hot and ratty.
32:34We're not tired. We're ratty.
32:35We're ratty.
32:44Wayne?
32:45Yeah?
32:46Yeah.
32:47She's there.
32:50Beautiful.
32:52Packing slate into the gaps under each upright adds extra support.
33:00And how does that edge get finished?
33:01So what we then do, we get a bit of dry mortar, lime and sand, and we'll dry pack under there.
33:10And when that's done, then we release the pressure and that all transfers the weight across the whole wall now.
33:16And then we can remove the props, and pray that the house doesn't collapse.
33:31While my Morris Minor's exterior was lovingly restored by its original owners, the interior very much wasn't.
33:37So I'm calling on the expertise of my mate Craig.
33:42Yo! How's it going?
33:44Good to see you.
33:45Good to see you.
33:46Who's been upholstering for over 40 years.
33:49Won't drive that.
33:50Yeah, you're going to like this one.
33:51Oh, am I?
33:53Right, I have carefully gathered all the interior bits for you.
33:58I've also got replacement seat covers that came with the car.
34:02I know, right?
34:03Provided me fit.
34:04I didn't even think about that.
34:06Well, you grab that one.
34:07I'll grab this one.
34:08Let's stick it in there and get you kicked off.
34:10Let's have a look what my workspace is like.
34:13First, he's got to take the seat apart.
34:16The fabric that's on this is Rexene.
34:18It was the nearest equivalent to leather at the time, which made these vehicles more affordable.
34:26And this webbing is called Pirelli webbing.
34:28It's a rubber webbing and it was originally made by Pirelli, the tyre company.
34:34So I've got this stripped down to the frame.
34:37This one's painting.
34:39While I prep the frame for Craig to weave his upholstery magic,
34:43over at the house, Duncan's working his own lime plaster wizardry.
34:48I'm going to knock up a little bit of dry mix.
34:49A non-hydraulic lime.
34:51A bit of sharp sand.
34:53To put the finishing touches to our new sill beams
34:56and make sure the house stands firm for another 500 years.
35:01Under every upright we put a little bit of slate.
35:03Now this will go in and just before we take all of the weight off the building,
35:08we'll just take the acros out.
35:09It will spread the load, stop the sill beam moving
35:13and just gives it a nice solid base.
35:20I've returned the freshly painted seat frames to Craig to upholster.
35:23He's using new webbing but keeping the original fibre matting.
35:28Gluing on new seat foam and scrim.
35:31Where you've got this join between the foam and this,
35:34it just smooths it out.
35:37Then it's on with the new seat covers.
35:40Some silicone spray.
35:41And that's going to act like a lubricant so that this will slide around on there.
35:47This rubber tube pushes inside there and that's literally all that holds this seat in place.
35:57Just like the seats, my decrepit 500 year old farmhouse is also set for a new lease of life.
36:04We're ready to remove the support stands.
36:08Fingers crossed it doesn't collapse.
36:10This is it.
36:12Yeah, so time to take it down.
36:13You might hear a little bit of creaking but...
36:18Right, that's taking the load off now.
36:20So now that is all right.
36:21I can hear it creaking.
36:23It's creaking.
36:25Right, unwind her a bit more.
36:27The house is still standing.
36:28Yeah.
36:30Some of this timber could be getting on for sort of 900 years old.
36:34You know, there's no nails in this at all. This is proper old craftsmanship.
36:48And we can preserve this now for another couple hundred years.
36:52So structurally we're sound, now we've got to make a weather-tight.
36:56Steps of progress.
36:58Perfect.
37:00In the barn.
37:02It's all hands on deck.
37:05To get my Morris fitted out and sold to help cover the costs.
37:09That's all done.
37:11Ready for the seats.
37:13Perfect, but don't go away just yet.
37:15Because this is Danish oil.
37:17This is going to give a little bit of extra life to this wood.
37:20Go with the grain.
37:22Okay.
37:23Extra life.
37:24You might need to do me as well.
37:26In fact, Dad, if I give you this rag, do you want to race mum from the other side?
37:31Okay.
37:32Right, I'll do the passenger seat. Do you want to do the driver's seat?
37:34Yeah.
37:46That is it.
37:48Our Morris Minor is done.
37:50It's amazing.
37:51Let's hope it makes money.
37:52This is definitely a profit-yielding car.
37:55Remember what you sold your one for?
37:57It might have been 150 quid.
37:59Something like that.
38:00Sold it for a donkey.
38:02Yeah, alright.
38:05Now to figure out how much I need to make.
38:07We bought the car for 7,350 quid.
38:11But later we did an engine deal.
38:14900 quid.
38:15Pretty much got us everything we needed to get the car running.
38:18Bit of contingency.
38:19We have spent 1,136 pounds on this car.
38:24And it's all been mechanical.
38:26Which means this car, as it stands here today, owes us 8,486 pounds.
38:32Eight and a half grand.
38:33And what's it worth?
38:36If this doesn't make over 10, I'll eat your hat.
38:40But before my Morris is sold, I have to drive her.
38:45And for Dad, this isn't just a car.
38:49It's a time machine.
38:50My life is charming.
38:55Though he drives, just as I remember.
38:57I love it!
38:59Man, it goes through the gears perfectly.
39:02The steering is wonderful.
39:07Oh, yeah!
39:09Oh, man, this is great.
39:11This is a road trip car.
39:12And you're going somewhere not in a hurry.
39:16Does this bring back memories?
39:17Oh, yeah.
39:19And driving with Mum in the back, holding a baby, and no seatbelt.
39:25What do you think Mum would think of this?
39:28I think she'd love it.
39:30When I took my driving test in my first Morris minor in 1957,
39:35you had to do an emergency stop.
39:36OK.
39:37And the examiner would put his hand down, or his click ball down,
39:41on the dashboard to go stop.
39:42So you're ready?
39:43I'm ready when you are.
39:44Bell!
39:46Oh, yes.
39:47I passed that one, too, in 1972.
40:01Now, this project was a huge risk.
40:04And ultimately, standing now in front of the car having driven it,
40:07the risk has paid off.
40:09The engine was a worry, the fact that it was on the floor of the garage,
40:12but we overcame it with a really good plan B.
40:15900 quid for a replacement engine that came with everything,
40:19bought reliability.
40:21It's had a full mechanical overhaul.
40:23Brakes.
40:24I mean, the engine, everything about this car,
40:26it's just on the bun.
40:28This is a great driving car.
40:30This restoration's also been a little bit of connecting with my dad.
40:33I mean, I've learned stuff that I never realized.
40:36His first car was a Morris minor, and he remembers his traveller.
40:39You know, this has been way more than just a nuts and bolts restoration.
40:43Isn't that the coolest thing about classic cars?
40:44The thing that's the most important isn't the bit that they're built to do,
40:47the driving.
40:48The most important bit is about connecting.
40:50It's the classic car auction at Silverstone Festival in Northamptonshire.
40:59A huge day for our little Morris minor traveller.
41:03Oh my gosh, she just looks so charming.
41:05Yeah, we're on pole position there at Silverstone.
41:07Yeah, someone's going to be getting a really good usable classic.
41:13Right.
41:14It owes us just under eight and a half.
41:16Yeah.
41:17Eight, four, eight, six.
41:18And I think you'd be pushed to find a better one.
41:21We've left nothing on the pitch, though.
41:23We are walking into the auction hall knowing this is the best this car can be.
41:26Yeah.
41:27Shall we?
41:28Come on.
41:29OK.
41:30Right.
41:31It's done now.
41:32She's going for sale.
41:33Ladies and gentlemen, a very, very warm welcome to you all.
41:38Right.
41:39Here we go.
41:40Sweaty hands.
41:41This is the wonderful 1963 Morris minor traveller.
41:44I mean, we gamble on the no reserve, but ultimately there's always going to be a handful of bidders for this.
41:48Five thousand, five five, six thousand a half.
41:49Oh, straight in.
41:50Three bids online straight away.
41:51We're up to six.
41:52Six and a half.
41:53Seven.
41:54Oh my God, it's moving quick.
41:55Oh my God, it's moving quick.
41:56Five hundred, nine thousand, five hundred.
41:57We're into profit.
41:58We're into profit already.
41:59Nine thousand, five hundred.
42:00You say ten.
42:01We do.
42:02Ten thousand.
42:03Five hundred.
42:04Five hundred.
42:05Five hundred.
42:06Five hundred.
42:07You say ten.
42:08We do.
42:09Ten thousand.
42:10Five hundred.
42:11That's five figures.
42:12Ten thousand.
42:13Ten thousand.
42:14Ten thousand.
42:15Ten thousand.
42:16Ten thousand.
42:17Ten thousand.
42:18Ten thousand.
42:19Ten thousand.
42:20Ten thousand.
42:21Ten thousand.
42:22Ten thousand.
42:23Ten thousand.
42:24Ten thousand.
42:25Ten thousand.
42:26Ten thousand.
42:27Ten thousand.
42:28Ten thousand.
42:29Ten thousand.
42:30Ten thousand.
42:31Ten thousand.
42:32Ten thousand.
42:33Ten thousand.
42:34Ten thousand.
42:35Ten thousand.
42:36Ten thousand.
42:37Ten thousand.
42:38Ten thousand.
42:39Ten thousand.
42:40Come on, 13 and a half grand.
42:41Lucky that time.
42:4213 and a half, that's yours.
42:44Well done, sir.
42:4613,500, 4201.
42:50And the new owner's not a Nigel.
42:52It's a Chris.
42:53It's a lot of history.
42:54I've passed one Tesla on it 50 years ago,
42:56and I've always worked on another one.
42:58This one really looks beautiful.
42:59I can't wait to have a drive in that room.
43:01Well, she drives beautifully, and I'm really, really
